"Now, I'm forty and I want to fuck on the floor and break shit!" A - My favorite line B - Makes me wonder what's up with my parents who are around his age?
i thinks its kick ass we've been able to amalgamate all the kick ass tunes we've had through the (ever) and been able to re-introduce it to the masses. hell, i went to a rave in toronto the other day and picked out a good 15 minutes of vivaldi that had the floor packed. to a classical song. dont diss the rave scene - its the biggest global scene we have. amsterdam, thailand, canada, latvia... psytrance festivals crop up all over the world. easier to find than a decent live metal act nowdays. /
The volume of cussing is not an indicator of intelligence in either direction. The content of the message is the indicator, and what Rollins is speaking about here is absolutely true.
That's a good question, why would I take it into account? Yes, he does know a lot about the music industry, that cannot be argued or disproved, but that doesn't make him an expert about all music nor gives him the "almighty final say" in what music is good or bad, no one has that power. Music is a lot like food in a way, people have different tastes and that can not be disapproved of. My motive for even replying was the inaccurate information regarding electronic music production & rave culture
Lots of people just don't get techno(and its perfectly understandable), but it has its origins in ancient tribal cultures(they did [natural] drugs too).
@renegadefunk He's not talking about originality he was talking about the talent & ability to create your own thing from scratch rather than using other people's pre-existing work. Making something from nothing is much harder.
go to a rave. a real rave. for days and days. what is it rollins wants at the ages of 15, 25, 35, and 40? "fuck on the floor and break shit." i say - go to a rave. you'd be perfect. hell - youd fit right in.
Rollins is aware that there's a lot more to music than aggression. Notice how he was mentioning bring back real music like Jazz, Soul and R&B. Those genres of music are not very aggressive. He was talking about as far hard rock goes. Hard rock used to mean badassery and now it means boring, cookie cutter bullshit. Rollins is dead right.
I enjoy electronic music and I am against drug use. In fact, the early rave scene (Especially Chicago's House scene during the 90's) was against drug use during raves since police weren't very tolerate of these types of parties. Like most genres, electronic music has lots of shit artists (Electronic music went to shit after 2000, fuck you PLUR). But if you would like to discuss more I'd be willing to PM or use some sort of IM program. Share music and ideas!
@SubRaver303 Waiting for what? Someone to tell you that playing 2 records at the same time deserves the same respect as playing an instrument. Mixing records is like putting together a puzzle, the pieces are there and just need to be put together. I suppose my dog has musical talent too, since she can turn on an ipod when told to do so. BTW: I was playing Chopin on piano before you were concieved.
You skipped the fact that 99% of electronic music production is the actual artist's work and sampling vocals (Or any other sound) adds another level of complexity. You also forgot to mention that the majority of the ENTIRE music industry rips off each other, it's not just one genre of music. The world would be better without non researched opinions.
@renegadefunk4 You're missing the point, he wasn't saying his music is talented, that was more primal & about aggression which is what he was referring to in regards to modern rock. Personally he's into jazz himself among other things. Also my point is that sure you're re-arranging chords & notes on a piano, but you're starting with nothing. You're not using a pre-existing, pre-recorded riff. You have to come up with it in your head. And have you ever tried to learn an instrument?...
Coming from a Death Metal background and seeing this guy makes me angry. I compare him and his music to The Offspring. Any song by The Bloody Beetroots (Techno/Electro) will blow this guy out of the water, give their track "Warp 1977" a whirl. Still, I love real rock and true punk stuff.
@renegadefunk4 ... not everyone is cut out for it. Believe me it takes a lot more talent to learn an instrument properly than it does to re-arrange & collage sampled music & that's a fact. Almost anyone can become a competent DJ if they really want to. But try learning jazz or classical & then come back to me & tell me i'm not making any sense.
digitalized zombies, take note. Leave all of your toys at home, go to the fucking desert and listen to your heartbeat. Bang on a rock (after asking permission and giving thanks) and sing one good note. Take away your gasoline and your electricity and all the rest of your entitled empire of self and have a fucking rave. And, Mr. Rollins, fer Chrissake, ride a bicycle to Trader Joe's, just for fun. Much Love.
Hmm, Henry sounds like he knows SO MUCH (Same can be said about you) about the rave scene according to what he is ranting about. And since you speak of statistics, which has more incorrect information: Being uneducated about an entire music genre or stating a well-used, but mostly untrue, figure to push a point across? Sure does make it worth while to call someone out on a common phrase. This day and age "[musical] influence" is just another word for "Hey, I liked what you did there, yoink."
@SubRaver303 He's saying that a turntable is NOT an instrument. Rave is NOT the new punk. Playing a real instrument and piecing together samples on a machine are nowhere near alike.
yeeeeaea, hell yeaeeaaah. Hahahahahaha Is that the Creed Bitch?!?!?! haha, I've always said all the shitty bands out these days sound like Creed, Days of the new, and/or tantric.
That's exactly what punk was. Rollins is blabbering, but so are you. That music sucks, honestly. Its like the worst of jazz - being lost in appreciation of technical achievement at the expense of any soul.. you know, the foundation of music. On is art, the other is craft. Punk was punk, and 'rave' music generally just blew, and the culture was superficial - just full absorption in the post-modern train reaching its inevitable dead end, meaninglessness.
@Ziek12 sampling & (re)arranging other peoples music is talent? Try learning an instrument & then writting a few songs... even if it's badly... it still requires more talent then just stealing someone elses prerecorded work & cutting & pasting. Do you have any idea what even goes into making a real record & getting it out there. By the way, you calling someone else dumb is hillarious. That'd be like a politician calling someone else a liar. You need to go back to 1st grade English.
"Now, I'm forty and I want to fuck on the floor and break shit!" A - My favorite line B - Makes me wonder what's up with my parents who are around his age?
Dude this guys actually has his shit straight. First intelligent person to actually say what needs to be said. FUCK YEAH
This is the way I have felt for so long.

I blame Eddie Vedder who made that voice of his a staple in bad Modern Rock Radio.
I hate this type of music too, but I am old and so is he. At least he admits it
I'm pretty sure the drugs came first. But I'd like to note that there are some goods trance songs.

i agree with this guy

he's speaking the truth.
He's right about it all, but he's DEAD ACCURATE about shitty modern rock. I hate bands with those Creed vocals!
