Thats a really nice boat. Absolutely beautiful. But. Thats not a NASCAR engine. Probably a standard 260 MerCruiser with a Holley carb and a dress up kit. If that was a NASCAR engine, you would be doing well over 90MPH. A real NASCAR engine has over 800 horsepower. From what I see on your video, you hit 60MPH. My 17' Checkmate with a 150HP mercury outboard does 65MPH. Sorry to burst your bubble.
I love the genuine excitement of all you guys when you were feeling the power! I know that feeling and it's priceless!!! Looks like you had a blast. Sweet boat!
I'm pretty sure a Nascar engine is capable of running upwards 8000+ RPM. You managed 6k and while it's impressive in its own right, the Mercruiser small block v8's can do the same all day long and never miss a beat. But I don't want to shit on your good times and I'm happy to see you are enjoying your beautiful boat with the people you care about in your life. Also thank you for doing what many of us won't do and that is making and sharing your videos with us.
Exactly. Matching the prop, the pitch, and the trim angle of the outdrive, that's the answer to getting top speed but still maintaining control. Love this older Donzy, it looks great and sounds even better. What year is it?
Guys as a long time fast boat owner please put your life jackets on and your engine kill lanyard. If something happened at speed your chance of survival will greatly improve. As a long time Donzi owner including a sweet 16 I will say that a very nicely prepared boat.
Beautiful boat. 🤟🤟 My best friend had an 18' back in the '70s. I only have one word of advice...get a kill switch and ware the lanyard at ALL times, AMHIK. We now run an Allison GSE with a Gen2 Merc 200xs ROS, my Cruise control that sits next to me keeps it under 90.😂😂😂
This 18 had a Volvo engine in it because of the e left side steering and now you have merc drive that has a righthand prop unless you have a left hand drive.. Worked For Donzi from 10/77 till 08/86.
I had one of these with the 350 COBRA back in the 90's. IT WAS AWESOME! My favorite boat. I always thought I'd get another with a crate engine and some turbos. I'm inspired.
As a boater for over 50 years, and I’ve personally owned three go, fast boats don’t ever leave your dock lines, tied to the boat, undo them, and stowe them away
I love fast boats. I love racing engines. However I like seeing people stay alive, why not wear your life jackets at those speeds. I’m pretty sure there weren’t even any jackets on board. That’s illegal, just in case you were not aware.
Ran a sweet 16 with a small V8, would run about 58mph. It was a blast. Every time it came out of the water it would roll to the left & driver was on the right. Try running fast when its rough
He marina my dad worked at in H.S. MI had an identical Donzi. The seats were red and white-alternating pleats. HD a 302 Ford and they all nicknamed it "the Candy-stripe" Donzi. Super cool awesome boat all the mechanics loved and claimed to be the best..
Dont leave the electric fuel pump on without the engine running. Turn it on to prime the system, start it up then turn the pump on once the engine is running. Holley needle and seats will stick and you can fill a couple of cylinders with gas and hydraulic it. Should run on a mechanical pump, with an electric for priming.
Pretty sure the flat side was f the steering wheel belongs on the bottom for leg clearance. It looks silly upside down, and prevents 10&2 o’clock hand positioning.
How big is the fuel tank and how much fuel does it use pr mile (1,609 km )or nautical mile(1,852 km) ? Love your donzi …think you got lucky and made a good deal….-its gonna give you much joy😁😉💪Tord from Norway
I watch the video yet but what did you guys do for cooling does it use a radiator like a car or does it have a water pump that sucks water that Cycles through the water jets and goes back out through this off like a normal boat block just curious also is it a Chevy four-door mopower?
Nice for smaller bodies of water like you were on. I don’t think bigger lakes or waterways would be kind to that type of boat. She sounded great and 60 m.p.h. isn’t too bad in my opinion.👍👍🇨🇦
It will "take"an enormous amount of water. We had several at our local marina on lake Michigan. My dad was a mechanic for 35 years. We did amazing things on the water. I don't know about an ocean, but those old Donzi's can handle the Great Lakes...
That hardly looks like a NASCAR engine, unless it is one from the 80's. It certainly isn't a NASCAR SB2 engine, which they've been using since the late 90's ... if it was newer, it would surely blow the drive right out of the back of that transom. Not even sure you can get marine manifolds, which this clearly has, for an SB2 small block. It clearly has regular Small Block manifolds, not SB2's. Someone saw this guy coming and ripped him off for this engine. Canadians, what can you do?
The Fastest Donzi classic goes to a man in Sweden who put a ProCharger on his 502 powered Donzi and went 118mph -Not kilometres per hour! And he has the video to prove it!
If your only hitting 6k at WOT your over-wheeled, should be 7500 or so with that 8k red line, now that I think about it..those engines probably don't produce real power until 5500 anyway
For sure, my Uncle had a '73 that went like mad. Enjoyed the rides in it but like this one no windshield so looking forward was hard at speed (especially as a little kid). Was still fun and boats look awesome just sitting in the water how low they sit. He took it out on Lake Michigan once and said it hit 80 or 90mph and ran like a champ, was a super flat day too!
Im thinkin he paid 20k for it since its in great condition. Though that is a sweet engine, it's not NASCAR level for sure. I'd try to keep it under 5k rpm for a while. You know, until you get use to the boat. YES... get a kill switch and lanyard. Everyone should be wearing an inflatable vest that is also on a lanyard. Water is really hard at 80 mph and that boat is infamous for throwing passengers and even the driver clear of the boat at speed. That's why Donzi turned it into a 22'...
The 22 was the best boat built. After Donzi was sold the second or third time, that's when the quality whet down hill and cheapened put on the hardware . Donzi boats were all hand built back in the day. There was no chopped glass in any of the boats I built.
Agree with previous comments. Beautiful boat. However, a 225 outboard on that boat would push it faster than you were going in this video. You aren't getting a ton of power though that V8 at all.
Thats a really nice boat. Absolutely beautiful. But. Thats not a NASCAR engine. Probably a standard 260 MerCruiser with a Holley carb and a dress up kit. Nice boat but NASCAR motor is clickbait. Sorry.
18 ft Donzii with a big block is fun 😮
I worked at Sierra Boat Company in Lake Tahoe in the 80's and we had a 21' Donzi with a Ford SOHC 427 NASCAR motor. That thing was a blast to drive.
Very nice. I used to work for a Donzi Dealer. The 22 Classic is probably the best boat of it's kind ever made. That is the little brother.
Jon at Port Sandfield Marina put a blower on his 22’ Donzi and hit high 90’s on radar. 💪
There's only one thing nicer than the sound of peace and quite up north and that's the sound of one of these ripping across the lake. 😁👍
quiet
@@crashalexander7232 Oops☺️ That was quite a typo. 😀
I love the genuine excitement of all you guys when you were feeling the power! I know that feeling and it's priceless!!!
Looks like you had a blast. Sweet boat!
In the 80s and early 90s Donzi was king in Miami. Timeless design IMHO
I'm pretty sure a Nascar engine is capable of running upwards 8000+ RPM. More to come! Thanks for watching
RPM in s boat is a function of the prop and motor. They can get whatever RPM this motor is capable of by matching the prop to get the ideal RPM
100% correct
Exactly. Matching the prop, the pitch, and the trim angle of the outdrive, that's the answer to getting top speed but still maintaining control.
Love this older Donzy, it looks great and sounds even better. What year is it?
Small block chev, not a nascar engine but is cool either way.
That is a sweet little Donzi.....the older ones were made way better than the new ones
There was a Donzi like that in the Down River area of the Detroit River back in the late 70’s, early 80’s. Always one of my favorites.
Guys as a long time fast boat owner please put your life jackets on and your engine kill lanyard. If something happened at speed your chance of survival will greatly improve.
As a long time Donzi owner including a sweet 16 I will say that a very nicely prepared boat.
settle down clown
I owned the exact same boat from ‘72. She was a stroked 302. Running in the high 50s.
thats fast enough to ski Lol
Had a Donzi Sweet 16. Was a fun boat! Enjoy the good times!
Awesome boat and engine. Love that engine sound.
Beautiful boat. 🤟🤟
My best friend had an 18' back in the '70s.
I only have one word of advice...get a kill switch and ware the lanyard at ALL times, AMHIK.
We now run an Allison GSE with a Gen2 Merc 200xs ROS, my Cruise control that sits next to me keeps it under 90.😂😂😂
Oh she’s got one haha
They make trim buttons that can be mounted on the wheel to operate with your thumb.
That’s a great idea
Amazing....speeds that we do daily in a car are so thrilling on a boat.
Absolutely beautiful. Made my night. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This 18 had a Volvo engine in it because of the e left side steering and now you have merc drive that has a righthand prop unless you have a left hand drive..
Worked For Donzi from 10/77 till 08/86.
That's not a Volvo that was a Chevy big block😊
Love this boat! How about pull the steering wheel off and reinstall with the top up?
Which Nascar Engine, Size & HP & TQ Specs please .
The 16 , 18 & 22 ft were my favourite lengths. Proper looking boats .
Xcellent Ride
I’ve been lucky to own a nascar built engine…..this doesn’t turn up or sound quite like mine. But you guys are still cool as heck.
I had one of these with the 350 COBRA back in the 90's. IT WAS AWESOME! My favorite boat. I always thought I'd get another with a crate engine and some turbos. I'm inspired.

Dan Aykroyd in The Great Outdoors with the boat Suck My Wake is what I'm reminded of
As a boater for over 50 years, and I’ve personally owned three go, fast boats don’t ever leave your dock lines, tied to the boat, undo them, and stowe them away
Whatya got " I don't have anything yet, till it's tested" love that brother!
That lake reminds me of Northern Minnesota, where is this filmed?
super nice piece, What happened to the nascar motor?
She’s in there.
i liked the Sidewinder that we had back in the 80's. thank you for the video
I wondered what became of the McKenzie Brothers. (LOL) REALLY good video guys!
I love fast boats. I love racing engines. However I like seeing people stay alive, why not wear your life jackets at those speeds. I’m pretty sure there weren’t even any jackets on board. That’s illegal, just in case you were not aware.
Never start a boat with the drive up, you want that drive shaft straight.
Don Aranow sure could build a fine boat.
Ran a sweet 16 with a small V8, would run about 58mph. It was a blast. Every time it came out of the water it would roll to the left & driver was on the right. Try running fast when its rough
good to raise that engine cover to vent any fumes.
Water is perfect for that boat nice an smooth
He marina my dad worked at in H.S. MI had an identical Donzi. The seats were red and white-alternating pleats. HD a 302 Ford and they all nicknamed it "the Candy-stripe" Donzi. Super cool awesome boat all the mechanics loved and claimed to be the best..
Doesn't sound like a nascar engine. Must be an old one from the 60/70? Was it full throttle?
What a perfect lake for that boat! I'd be out there all day lol
Dont leave the electric fuel pump on without the engine running. Turn it on to prime the system, start it up then turn the pump on once the engine is running. Nice job!!! Great boat!!! I'm smiling again!
Awesome boat I love the old Donzi's, what lake is that? Im in BC
Where was this filmed?Beautiful lake!
What's with the ride problems?
How big is the fuel tank and how much fuel does it use pr mile (1,609 km )or nautical mile(1,852 km) ?
Love your donzi …think you got lucky and made a good deal….-its gonna give you much joy😁😉💪Tord from Norway
Tord, we need to see more Predator boats in North America. The 477 is a work of art.
My 410 sprint engine turns at 8k plus don't know what that 6k was about
That flat bottomed steering wheel would drive me bananas in a boat lol.
Why is the steering wheel upside down?
Hydraulic drives always move off Center.
@@AdventuresWithAbe oh! That makes since. That’s a nice boat man.
everyone stop hating -- this motor is out of a "nascar edition" Monte Carlo
Thats some solid fiberglass!
I watch the video yet but what did you guys do for cooling does it use a radiator like a car or does it have a water pump that sucks water that Cycles through the water jets and goes back out through this off like a normal boat block just curious also is it a Chevy four-door mopower?
Is it a solid roller cam being a NASCAR engine it should be able to rev to 8,000 RPMs Plus?
Nice for smaller bodies of water like you were on. I don’t think bigger lakes or waterways would be kind to that type of boat. She sounded great and 60 m.p.h. isn’t too bad in my opinion.👍👍🇨🇦

You never rode in a Donzii then they love rough water 😊
That high viz will help you from drowning when you hit the water at 70 mph.
How many hours would guess you can log on her before doing the top end?
I knew this was filmed in Muskoka somewhere. Then I saw the Ontario plate. Great boat boys!.
Amazing drone photography!!
I was waiting for that rear rope to fly out of the boat and into the propeller... maybe next time...
I have no idea what he paid for it but it sure sounded great , I could listen to that motor run all day.
What body of water is that? Beautiful.
Lake Joe
The outboard steering gives it away!
Do all Canadian men giggle like little girls, or is that just an Ontario thing? Inquiring minds want to know. 🤭
Quite brash of you to assume they is man, maybe you should ask for their pronouns first? LOL 😆😜
Ya most Canadians are switch hitters
I’m from Ontario and yes.
Who said they are men...
Truth be told, if I was running in that I’d be giggling most the time as well.
That looks so fun, congrats good luck!
No lifejackets?
That hardly looks like a NASCAR engine, unless it is one from the 80's. Not going to lie driver had me stressed out in the beginning
Nice boat, clean and simple but excellant.
There are more NASCAR motors on UA-cam than there are in NASCAR.
Could you imagine water skiing being that boat lol what a riot that would be!!!
I had a friend back in the 60s who did that, just once!
Man, what a feeling...
You got something that is “Really Nice!”
Very nice...HIGH FIVE!! 🖐
The Fastest Donzi classic goes to a man in Sweden who put a ProCharger on his 502 powered Donzi and went 118mph -Not kilometres per hour! And he has the video to prove it!
I would take one of these little donzi's all done up like this over a mega yacht any day!
Now on a calm day , you can hook up some Wahoos. Thats sick. !!
HAA! I had fun watching that thanks.
Awesome boat sounds incredible
I was about to laugh if that Donzi had a Alpha One Outdrive! Yep! That Donzi will boogie!
So you're telling me that's an 800 horsepower SB2 nascar engine
When you coming out to lake Havasu at?
This baby is probably gonna stay in Canada lol
Should bring it to the Lake st clair donzi run@@AdventuresWithAbe
That’s a pimpin boat 🛥️ 😍
Of course it will run!
If your only hitting 6k at WOT your over-wheeled, should be 7500 or so with that 8k red line, now that I think about it..those engines probably don't produce real power until 5500 anyway
I missed it. What was top speed?
65mph without trimming
Cool.
Beautiful boat but my old bay boat runs 60 with a Yamaha 225
Should run 80mph
Nice boat
need a windshield and life vest. firs thing you check before you leave the dock
You totally missed the channel markers when. You made that u turn. You could have killed everyone. Boats are no joke.
He needs to learn how to set up trim tabs and trim and it will turn on a dime and go 10-15 mph faster ! I got a 22 with 502 and 509 hp !
Can I ask what speed you get with the 502
The plus side of those horrendous ergonomics is that if you fly out of the boat there isn't much to hit !
It looks like. a motorcycle in the water. You probably get the same feeling. The wind blowing through your hair and all that good stuff.
Im thinkin he paid 20k for it since its in great condition. Though that is a sweet engine, it's not NASCAR level for sure. I'd try to keep it under 5k rpm for a while. I have a well craft xl23. With a Chevy 454. You know sneak up it. It's sounds drag engine I name her. Miss sassy. 8:33
I want a boat just like that. Wow
The 22 was the best boat built. After Donzi was sold the second or third time, that's when the quality whet down hill and cheapened put on the hardware . Donzi boats were all hand built back in the day. There was no chopped glass in any of the boats I built.
My Z520 Ranger with 250 outboard will run 60mph all day long. But, it don't sound nearly as good!
Not a bad boat, waut til he mixes it up with a Vdrive, hel get whipped
Take that V-drive out in some "water"( -waves). Good bye v-drive, Donzi is gone the Donzi is a v-hull not a flat bottom....c'mon man
I had a 1995 24’ Donzi black widow with the same colors 😍
Having serious fun
NASCAR motor…..? 👀
but, does it fish?
Agree with previous comments. Beautiful boat. However, a 225 outboard on that boat would push it faster than you were going in this video. You aren't getting a ton of power though that V8 at all.
