  • Kartoffel is a wild betta species called Mahachai betta. Making Brine Shrimp / Get rid of cyanobacteria.
The spinach started out so well, then the growth slowed down. I’m not sure if the spinaches will make it. I had high hopes for them. I suppose I’ll try something else if they don’t work out.
I used 35% hydrogen peroxide on the cyanobacteria. There was an imbalance b/c I removed the sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes were doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the tank. You can’t buy 35% HP these days online. I think the strongest you can buy is 12%. I suppose you can also use the usual 3%, but you might have to use a little more. You might want to check the local pharmacy if they have anything higher.

(*For salinity, I’m going by the 1 table spoon per liter rule. However, depending on the size of the table spoon, you might want to try 1 table spoon, or 1 1/4 table spoon…and so on. You might want to experiment and see how much salt yields the best result. The brine shrimp will live for 3~4 days max. You can just siphon out only the amount you want during each feeding.)

You should've incubated the seeds longer before introducing them to a nutrient rich environment. When exposed too early to these nutrients plants have a tendency to grow "disfigured" and out of control.
When examining the tips of the leaves you can also see they're slightly "burnt" and curl a bit, indicating that the nutrients of the tank are choking the plant's roots.
"When seedlings first poke out of the ground, they are still feeding off the food stored in the seed. The first couple of leaves that form are not actually leaves at all. They are called cotyledons or seed leaves. They are part of the seed or embryo of the plant. Cotyledons contain the remainder of the stored food reserves of the seed and keep the seedling fed until the true leaves sprout and the plant can begin photosynthesis. Usually, the cotyledons disappear shortly after the true leaves appear and begin photosynthesizing. It is at this point that the seedling could use a little boost of fertilizer."
To summarize, once the plants have grown their first set of true leaves, only then can you start adding them to the tank for added fertilization.

      @avocadotoast6369 5 років тому +5

@@jessetermeer2187 I am not actually a botanist or have a tank, though I do enjoy hydro-culture and hydroponics and a common issue is that people add fertilizer right from the start which is not desired as you're looking to grow stronger roots before stems and leaves. I can venture to guess the problem with dumping a sweet potato in a tank like in his previous videos, is that the roots don't get enough oxygen which in turn kills the plant. As such, I'm afraid I haven't got the slightest clue what to suggest to you, though a few hours on google should provide you with the answers you need.

It will react with anything organic (bacteria) and just becomes water. It's not strong enough to harm a fish. It's probably only 3% solution. It's great if you have a bacterial infection in a tank, just make sure you turn your filter off for an hour while using it.

You have to be very careful with hydrogen peroxide around fish. Even though it's diluted, their gills are extremely delicate and can get chemical burns, especially in a tank with little water movement. Make sure you do your research before you try it yourself.

The spinach seedlings died due to Damping Off, by the looks of things.
Usually caused by bacteria or fungus. Cold or wet conditions cause it, and the fact the seedlings where long and floppy would not have helped. This would be due to lack of light.
I hope this helps, and keep up the great videos!

I just found your videos today, and I have to say they're very professional, & soothing. It's obvious you care about your plants & fish very much.
About the spinach (I'm a Master Gardener): when plants get long & floppy like that (it's called getting leggy), it's because the lights are not close enough to the plants. As soon as a seed sprouts, always keep a light no more than 2 inches from their tops. Don't worry, they won't burn. In fact, I've had tomato plants grow so fast they grew between the 2 fluorescent bulbs (I had a 4' shop light w/deflector), bend over, & start to grow back down! They weren't burned at all. Like one commenter said, the stems browning & dying is probably something called damping off. Not much you can do about that, happens every now & then. I've grown many varieties of plants indoors, but haven't tried aquaponics yet, so the damping off may have been exacerbated by the high moisture content of it's environment. Also, (like another commenter said), in order for indoor plants to have strong stems, they need to be gently disturbed every once in a while. When a stem bends slightly, the stem walls on the outside part of the bend thickens to help protect the plant from breaking. So, a small fan blowing a gentle breeze to just get them rustling would work - I always have an automatic timer that shuts off the lights & fans at the same time. But that would add more paraphernalia to your setup. If you just run your hand gently back & forth over their tops at least once a day to get them to move a little should do the trick.

Kale grows really well in aquaponic systems, from previous experience my plants would form dense root structures. To prevent seedlings from becoming spindly and weak place the light a little closer then raise it as the plants grow to prevent the leaves from burning, and maybe a fan for some air flow. As the air blows around the seedling it causes them to move which strengthens the stem. Although overtime the kale will produce a thick stalk which will be hard to damage.

Leafy green are crops that require high intensity lighting. I suggest you go with low-light ornamental plants, like Anthurium (Laceleaf). It is particularly adapted to hydroponics, and will flower and flourish under ordinary fluorescent lights. I love to use it in betta tanks. The roots are large and not small and tangly like the potatoes were, so it would also have a mangrove-like look. Keep up the awesome videos :)

I remember doing an experiment in middle school with brine shrimp. Each group had to pick a different amount of salt and we would see which group's brine shrimp lived the longest. We had started in January and I think my group's were still alive at the end of the school year. They got pretty big for brine shrimp.

Thank you for the beautiful video! The spniach died because of root/stem burn. This kind of fine plant doesnt grow well in hydroponic media. Use glasswool for those. You also could try to put an Orchid in there. Most orchids can be kept in aquaculture, some like Miltonia even grow partially in rivers in the wild.
