My favorite nano tank is the generic 1.3 gallon fish bowl I found randomly at Walmart. I keep it as a no filter/no tech planted tank, in my kitchen. Love it! I keep guppies, so for livestock I put newborns (5-8) in, let them grow for several weeks, then switch them out. The one thing I would add to your list is what plants are you using, if any, and are they good for growing out of the water? I added Java fern as I had a ton and it is too big for the bowl, and just looks awful. I will be switching it out soon, but gotta decide what to replace it with (Anubias? Creeping Jenny? The most irritating thing about one of my nano tanks is that the filter pump cannot be removed.... impossible to clean the impeller and it eventually stopped working. Removable pump is now a must have on my list for any tank with a built-in filter. So for that reason I'd avoid the TopFin Retreat tanks. I have a 6 gallon Fluval Edge, it's got a small opening which is a challenge for maintenance and catching fish, but it is beautiful and the AquaClear filter is very durable.

On the subject of tank size for bettas ... I've kept bettas in 3g, 5.5g and 6g cylinder, but have settled on divided 10g as better for the bettas and easier to maintain (even though similar ratio of fish to water, they seem to be more stable). Because I often pick up "rescue bettas" from Craigslist etc, and always have a handful of them, it's a compromise size to allow me to keep more of them, though I'd really prefer to give each a 10g. Well, I was recently setting up a new (tho pre-loved) 30g tank. It has dark substrate and driftwood, dramatic stripy black and white stone, tons of green plants, including long long Val draped from one end of the tank to the other, with a bubble wall at one end. Stocking is green laser cories and trilineatus cories, and some shrimp. And an impulse purchase - a curious and lively white (cellophane?) betta. Not only do they all look stunning together with the aquascape, they also seem to be really loving life together. And oh man, the betta uses every inch of that tank! He investigates the shrimp when they show themselves, scours the Val at the top for food that gets stuck in the fronds. He patrols the perimeter and checks the crevices of the driftwood and rocks, and he even schools with the cories when they're glass surfing in the flow of the bubble wall! It's still pretty early days for that tank, and I am more than a little nervous about him going on a killing spree some day. 😬 But I have to admit, it is also making me re-think my standards on minimum tank size for bettas...
What an interesting betta! I currently have a female betta in a 10 gallon with 3 nerites and 5 amanos, but it’s my dream to get the UNS rimless 20 gallon and have a betta in there with some ember tetras and maybe otocinclus. My betta enjoys harassing the amanos. She nudges at them to get them to swim away just so she can chase them. Bettas are certainly in a league of their own when it comes to personality…
@@typicallyusual6984 I'm undecided about bettas and amanos being together. Had a dead Amano in the tank just the other say. Could have been something like a bad molt, but ... * looks suspiciously at the betta who chases the shrimp away from the food *
@@pjp9383 Yeah it doesn’t always work out. My amanos hide during the day and come out to eat after lights out. At the beginning my fish caused a shrimp to jump, but there have been no casualties ever since I covered up that gap in the lid. Thankfully she’s not too aggressive and will only chase them a little for fun. She gives up as soon as they’re out of sight.
@@typicallyusual6984 It's great when the ecosystem basically sorts itself out. My amanos act like they're starving all the time, even in really well established tanks. I wish they would learn to stay out of the way of the bigger fish!
Yay! I love watching your videos. Hoping to learn how to keep my water clear….. since I’ve added plants to my small tank (a wk ago) it’s been cloudy. I whole heartedly agree with your first recommendation…. My first tank did NOT fit where I wanted it so I had to replace it quickly lol
Such a good point about having your tank at a good viewing height. My new one is on a bookshelf in my living room. Next to a comfy swivel chair where I’ll be a little lower, but still have a good view. I’m really excited.
Great list! One tank I have is a 20g high and I prob wouldn’t do it again do to the challenge of growing plants. Years ago I had started with a 10g but needed a lid/light. Found the lid/light brand new at a flea market for $3 (but wasn’t really looking for it at the time so I didn’t know my measurements). It was for a 20 high, thus the reason I bought the tank to go with. Joanna, it was nice to see the English garden tank again...I think that’s what you called it. No joke, I was just thinking about it this morning...I’m considering a path scape and so I was trying to think back as to how yours looked. So very nice with the stone walls. 😊🌱🐠
Oh that’s too funny - I’ve worked backwards into many a project. I’m so happy to hear you liked the English garden tank. Still one of my favorites I long to recreate on a (perhaps slightly) larger scale. 🤔☺️
Fell into the trap of a tall tank, i think it's likely similar to yours (26 inches high) for my office shrimp tank since I have limited floor space. Never again! I love to adjust my scape and am always having to remove my driftwood and plants to cull shrimps (into another tank of course). If I had a do-over I'd find a shelving solution that would have fit in that space for 2-3 5-10gal ones instead. Maybe when we move 🤔
Was just testing strength of a table at work as I want to set up a 5 gallon here (eye doctors office), but it’s a cheap IKEA table and my confidence is low lol. There’s one other spot that may work but I’d have to supply the stand . I have a 20, 10, and 2 5’s at home with a possible 3rd 5 ready to set up. Always enjoy your content, thanks 😊 ps: if you were closer I’d tell you to send Jason here for reading glasses 🤓 lol 😆
I absolutely adore your passion and I really feel you in this video. My least favorite size is 1.5 gallon. I've had fish jump out of it and they technically should have been happy but they didn't share my vision. Since childhood my imagination has died down and I've become more aware of the welfare of the fish. I now keep a 10 gallon as my quarantine tank and a 20 gallon as my nano tank. I eventually want both of my kids to learn about tanks and I believe 10 gallon would be the minimum size I would start them with because I realize fish have been happiest in that size minimum. Thanks for sharing your failures. I really enjoyed your video.
I looked at that pretty 15-column from Aqueon. It looked too tall for my comfort, especially with the Aqueon stand. I left the store thinking about that tank but knowing it would be too hard...then about a week or so later you came out with your review.
May I ask you where did you get the large stone with 3 small and one large hole in your 20gal long .I’m setting up a Hillstream Loch and nano aquarium and have been looking for that type of stone . I have most of the stones and wood ,but I need that one stone to stand out in my aquascape .I’ve set up tanks. before but this one is super special . The aquarium is a Special birthday present from my son for my seventy something birthday . ( Don’t admit to my age ) LOL 😂 Thank you I do enjoy your husband and your channel
Hi Joanna! The moment I saw your 1st video (This one). I had to subscribe. Your videos are very informative and to the point. Appreciate all the hard-work behind it 🙏🏼
When you said the first question I said my first question is: can whatever I’m putting it on hold the weight? It’s not just the weight, it’s the weight per square inch basically, and even if something is rated to hold that much total weight, can it take all of that weight in one tiny area? Will the structure still be stable or will it get top heavy? I have a handicapped son that pulls and leans on everything, so this applies to all furniture, even if it doesn’t hold a tank for me; I can’t have it tipped over and hurting anyone
I'm wondering Chris if you're the same Chris I've known from before that I sent some beard products to. If I am let me know and I sure am glad to see you around the aquarium community...Paige Flynn❤️

I am in a love hate relationship with my 5 gallon tall portrait tank. it started out fine. i ended up modifying EVERYTHING. because the filter broke and the lighting just wasn't enough. I dont regret the buy but it was a large expense for something so small. How do you stop yourself from getting more tanks later on? I'm getting addicted!! (used to have loads of tanks until I moved)
Just grabbed some more Anubis and I love it have you done profiles on all the Anubis I found congensis, frazeri, and Anubis nana and can’t wait to get them in my tanks.
I made some pretty nice neat dividers using egg crate covered with black plastic canvas (for cross stitching), using black zip ties to put it all together. Quite labour intensive! And tricky to get the measurements just right, but if you do, pretty nice and stable in the tank because it's solid, not flimsy. Interesting note, both of them have ended up with some moss growing on the side. If it gets extensive enough, I suppose I'll need to make sure both sides are separately filtered. (One of the tanks has small sponge filters on both sides of the divider, but the other tank has a filter on one side, with the output directed at the divider to make sure of waterflow on both sides.)
I have bought large pieces of driftwood and cut it to small sizes. It's tricky; you don't want straight cuts (obviously) , so I put those on the bottom. But it can be done.
Those lifeguard aquatics tanks look amazzing and I love the raised base. Do you have a link or product name to help me find where to get them. I can't seem to find them!
I bought a 24 gallon square. It has all the lines of a rimless, It seemed awesome. It came with all the artificial media. The back houses all of the equipment. It was sold as a salt water tank. The lights are very, very bright. The thing is I feel jipped because with the enclosed housing it might be a 18 gallons for display and fish. Plus it is wonky. At first the sponge would get clogged up and then if you werent home you ran the risk of the tank over flowing. It seems to have settled now 9 months later. but i just never feel safe. Like it might over flow. Also those lights I have had to adjust and move up. I have had battles with hair algae. It has turned out to be lot of maintenance. I still love the shape of the tank, still trying to make it right. But if I had a redo I would just buy a basic 20 long with a back pack or sponge filter.
These are all such important things to consider! After watching another channel that recommended a specific glass tank to get during the pandemic, because it had strong glass that actually arrived intact. The other features were hidden behind a wall. This is the Marineland portrait glass LED aquarium kit. Honestly I haven’t put it together yet, but one major drawback is the height to width ratio. The width is 9.5” but the height is 14”. So aquascaping is difficult, and you need either a ton of substrate to to correct that height difference, or figure out something else. Joanna, I did try your suggestion regarding checking out pieces of wood with a regular 5 gallon (that was all they had in the store), and I thought it would work, but was way too short. Awful looking. I have tried a few other pieces, but it’s sitting in a back corner of a room completely unused. Bummer. ☹️
2.5 gallon would be great for your Nano shrimp. With your talent, you could make a nice landscape that is self sufficient with plants as your filter and a small Nano sponge in the corner behind a rock.
20 Long is a nano tank ? Can my son and I get that statement notarized ? My son just upgraded his overstocked 10 gallon multi. tank to a 20 Long. Mom was horrified by the “huge, oversized tank that was way too big !” That said, as a Father re-experiencing the hobby through his son, I’d avoid tanks less than 2.5 gallons even with nano fish. For other fish, I’d save and get the larger tank for the space first. Furthermore I would advise going slow and enjoying the scape and cycle. Enjoy the nano journey and the mega benefits, Jim
We do the same ! It works well especially on those corners. For rocks, I get “tooth brushes” from tool stores with brass and steel brushes. Some sites carry a set of copper, brass, steel, … etc for little money. The resemble “tooth brushes” to the degree that they seem to use the same mold. Better aquacare through dentistry, Jim
@@jamesgreen9372 you saying "dentistry" reminds me of the dental tools sets you can buy at drugstores. It's got the picks and such. Those would also be great for crevices and hard to get at spots!
The nano tanks are about the scape itself not the fish. As long as you are ok with a very small selection of fish suited for nano tanks you'll enjoy nano tanks!
Hey Joana (hope I spelled that right)! Where do you buy the racks you have? I’ve been thinking about getting racks for something like what you have for my own nano nook and for quarantine tanks 😁
I love nano tanks, but from experience a 5g is as small as I go these days just due to water fluctuations and how hard smaller tanks are to keep stable. Just dropping a leaf into a tiny nano can totally shift the ph really fast and kill off everything in the tank. A planted 5g is more forgiving and the stocking options are much more versatile. 👍❤👍
You got me into nano tanks it’s all your ( insert appropriate statement). I don’t understand how a cemetery can raise prices and blame it on the cost of living!
The most difficult to clean tank that I have found is the Imagitarium Freshwater Cube Aquarium Kit, 5.2 GAL it seemed great at first but the light is too bright. I guess if I loaded it with high light plants that could help. Would never get again
More great insight! As you probably know, I don't do nano tanks necessarily, but I do have a rimless 14 gallon that I that I wouldn't mind collaborating with you on if you have the time. I'm not talking a dual screen Live thing, I'm just saying maybe you can let me pick your brain to see what kind of substrates, plants and what-not work best in conjunction with the Father Fiah method. What I currently have going on is certainly not working.
Love the 20 gallon long... working on a rimless 5.5 right now for a female betta. I do not like trying to aquascape in any acrylic tank - too easy to scratch / scuff. Glass only for me.
Great topic. I would never get anything smaller than a 5 gallon or less again. Water does foul quickly even w weekly water changes and required me to test twice a week. 5’s were difficult for to get my hand in to service too. So limited for scaping and inhabitants.
I like the low and wide tanks. It suits more fishes' natural habitat. I don't know of too many fish that need to constantly swim vertically. I feel like those tanks are not happy places for the fish.
is it just me or at 4:20 of the video theres a floating dead fish??? could be wrong could just be the fish swimmin goofy but looks like its dead and just floating w the current. great video though nonetheless!
What you could have done with the 15gallon tall is 5 gallons worth of glass cut off. Then you are left with a 10 gallon and with the other all you would need to do is cut a bottom to size then you have a 5 gallon 😊

I have a 20 high and I do not care for it much I’m going to move all the fish in it to a 40 gallon. I don’t like the 20 high because I like larger and usually more shallow tanks. My favorite tank has to be a 40 breeder perfect for most of my breeding projects.
To make the Nano tank with less weight, how about Feather Rock. Ten times lighter than a normal rock. It is not lava rock like one would think. Just a thought.
Hi there - there isn’t a specific go to light or lights for me but I don’t think you can go wrong with a hygger. I like the ones with metal brackets on each end to extend to desired length. Good luck 😊
My favorite tank is my 20 long, it is on my home office desk. (The desk is massive and solid) I'm really not into tanks smaller than the 20 long, I consider it a nano tank but I also consider my 29 tall a nano tank as it has the same footprint as the 20 long. Another great video!
I had a tall 67L hexagonal tank it was awful. To do anything at the bottom meant up to my shoulder in water. Total nightmare for someone with fibromyalgia
I love nano tanks, but it's a shame most of them come in cube sizes, which just isn't the right footprint for me or the fish i like. I find it difficult to find nice looking nano tanks of the suitable dimensions - landscape, not too deep & semi-tall with opti-white glass.
8_ when you consider buying a nano tank think what you have at home, a toddler, a kid or a pet especially big dogs because these creatures are curious and they stick their hand literally to every thing😂 or try to reach the tank and accidentally pull down the tank 😱😱
For us its anything smaller than a 3.5 that we don't like. We just are not good enough to manage them. Can't even keep a snail alive in them, with doing everything like we should. Can't even keep a snail in a 3.5 with our kids bettas lol. Bettas do great, but snails don't last. We know it is us and managing that small of a tank. We have 3-3.5 gallons, each with a betta and they are all doing great. General is over a year old (he is our rose tail). We just cannot manage snails in anything smaller than a 5 gallon, just not skilled enough, lol. So it makes me not like anything smaller than a 3.5 lol....we tried and failed miserably.
bull, depending on how much hardscape takes up the tank determines whether it's a nano tank. on average, 2.5-7 gallons is considered a true nano. But once again, how much hardscape you use can take up room and provide less swimming space and surface area.
'Nano' has taught me is that not every tank has to have a fish in it for me to Love it! All this time, I thought I was a 'Pet fish hobbiest', but now, as I enjoy my 'Topfin' 5.5 gal Pumpkin shrimp tank & the Blue Ramshorn Shallow 7 gal, I ask myself, 'Who ARE you??!' LOL!

I’m afraid I’m a bit of an impulse buyer and have to deal with the consequences afterwards 😳 probably should take your advice in future 🤗
Where did you find the list?
@@betsyjackson-wright9005 from the content of Joanna’s video....I referred to it as a list - Joanna called it 7 things. Hope that helps!
@@cherylbelott omgosh, boy do I feel silly. LOL! I was looking all over for a fish list 😂😂😂🙄
Oh haha - that’s the unfortunate thing about most Ikea furniture. NAF. not aquarium friendly. 🤭. Ya, he needs glasses baaaaad. 🤓
@@thesmallscape I see it all the time: denial 🤣 especially from men! 😉😁🥸
Love your channel
Hi Joanna!
The moment I saw your 1st video (This one). I had to subscribe.
Your videos are very informative and to the point.
Appreciate all the hard-work behind it 🙏🏼
Thank you so much, Vijay! Very kind of you to say - see you in the next one 😃
@@marypaigeflynn4512 I am indeed. And I just recently got into fish
@@liquidrockaquatics3900 I knew it my friend!! So happy to see you here!! I've been in the fish keeping for many years!! I'm so excited to see you ❤️🥰😍🌿🐟🌿💚
Love watching your videos. Great information and your enthusiasm is contagious. Keep up the great work 🐟🐠
You’re so kind for stopping by, Marcia!
Very good list Joanna!
I bought a couple of my stands off wayfair myself. Great video 😁
Hi Joanna, great video!
Thank you! 🙂
What would you advise on best way to remove nano fish from a heavily planted tank?
Very good info!!!
Just grabbed some more Anubis and I love it have you done profiles on all the Anubis I found congensis, frazeri, and Anubis nana and can’t wait to get them in my tanks.
Good information as always. Currently working on a divided 10 gallon.😁
Ooooh - weeee!! I’ve been tempted to do the same. Good luck!
Love this video great work.
Have you ever made a diy canister filter ?
Would be great for a nano tank
Hahaha... Rule #1, decide where you're going to place your new nano tank.
Rule #2, decide where you're going to place your next 11 nano tanks. 😆
I literally laughed OUT loud with that one! Too funny and soooo true!!
@@thesmallscape haha, for sure. 😉
20 Long is a nano tank ? Can my son and I get that statement notarized ?
My son just upgraded his overstocked 10 gallon multi. tank to a 20 Long. Mom was horrified by the “huge, oversized tank that was way too big !”
That said, as a Father re-experiencing the hobby through his son, I’d avoid tanks less than 2.5 gallons even with nano fish. For other fish, I’d save and get the larger tank for the space first. Furthermore I would advise going slow and enjoying the scape and cycle.
Enjoy the nano journey and the mega benefits,
Jim
I use a toothbrush to get into crevices in my smaller tanks. It works pretty good!
Nice! They come in handy ☺️
We do the same !
It works well especially on those corners.
For rocks, I get “tooth brushes” from tool stores with brass and steel brushes. Some sites carry a set of copper, brass, steel, … etc for little money. The resemble “tooth brushes” to the degree that they seem to use the same mold.
Better aquacare through dentistry,
Jim
@@jamesgreen9372 you saying "dentistry" reminds me of the dental tools sets you can buy at drugstores. It's got the picks and such. Those would also be great for crevices and hard to get at spots!
The nano tanks are about the scape itself not the fish. As long as you are ok with a very small selection of fish suited for nano tanks you'll enjoy nano tanks!
Wonderful again!
☺️!
Lol. So nice of you to say.
Ps - lol!
We got a ton of our furniture from Wayfair lol. BTW the video quality is always sooooo good. I love the B-roll.
Do you too?! 🪑 🙌🎉 Thank you so much! ☺️
Love the 20 gallon long... working on a rimless 5.5 right now for a female betta. I do not like trying to aquascape in any acrylic tank - too easy to scratch / scuff. Glass only for me.
I have two biorb flow tanks. It's a love hate relationship. I'm not sure I would ever recommend it. It's a hassle to maintain. Limited scaping room.
I have a 10 gallon in my bedroom with a group of Neon Tetras with live plants. They look nice again the green plants. I watch it from my bed.
Hello. I wonder if I can by an aquarium that is 180,20,20cm. Is that to small just 20cm high and deep? It very long is that good?
What are the fish at 13:45?
Man those betta fish look well taken care of.
Worst tank I've tried is a 10 gal half moon. Too talk to reach the bottom, and hard to scrap and clean due to the curved front.
Interesting, thanks for the information!
Long tweezers are essential.
Great topic. I would never get anything smaller than a 5 gallon or less again. Water does foul quickly even w weekly water changes and required me to test twice a week. 5’s were difficult for to get my hand in to service too. So limited for scaping and inhabitants.
You have a point, those sizes do present some challenges. ☺️
I like the low and wide tanks. It suits more fishes' natural habitat. I don't know of too many fish that need to constantly swim vertically. I feel like those tanks are not happy places for the fish.
More great info
☺️ hi Dave!
is it just me or at 4:20 of the video theres a floating dead fish??? could be wrong could just be the fish swimmin goofy but looks like its dead and just floating w the current. great video though nonetheless!
I came to check if it was just me who noticed, poor lil fella
What you could have done with the 15gallon tall is 5 gallons worth of glass cut off.
Then you are left with a 10 gallon and with the other all you would need to do is cut a bottom to size then you have a 5 gallon 😊
We have wayfair in the Uk . I love the furniture they sell . 👍
Do you?! Woohoo!! I do too - very user friendly website and search tools, they deliver quite quickly too. ☺️
@@thesmallscape yer we do . I love them . Hope their ok now are they inside in a new tank for winter now?
I have a 20 high and I do not care for it much I’m going to move all the fish in it to a 40 gallon. I don’t like the 20 high because I like larger and usually more shallow tanks. My favorite tank has to be a 40 breeder perfect for most of my breeding projects.
Good Morning.
Great audio
To make the Nano tank with less weight, how about Feather Rock. Ten times lighter than a normal rock. It is not lava rock like one would think. Just a thought.
You’re soooo Gorgeous and knowledgeable 🌿
Can you message a few nano tank lights you recommend. The tank I need 1 for is a 7gal. Measures 11×11×11
Hi there - there isn’t a specific go to light or lights for me but I don’t think you can go wrong with a hygger. I like the ones with metal brackets on each end to extend to desired length. Good luck 😊
@thesmallscape what about the clip on nano lights??
I would have invested, in my larger aquariums, shorter ones. Not necessarily lowboys, just ones where less stools are needed 😆 GO PACK! 😋
Lol! I hear ya!
👍
Spot the dead fish at 04:22 !
BTW... my favorite tank is a 36 bow front.
Nice! It’s a great looking tank! ☺️
Magic eraser for crevices
I have yet to try them..on my list! 👍
I love nano tanks, but it's a shame most of them come in cube sizes, which just isn't the right footprint for me or the fish i like. I find it difficult to find nice looking nano tanks of the suitable dimensions - landscape, not too deep & semi-tall with opti-white glass.
💚💚💚💚
Favorite sizes: 20 long, 33 long, 75, and 125. I would not buy anything smaller than 10 gallons again. Those tiny tanks are too much work.
I would love to find a 33 long!
DEAD FISH @ 4:20
😉💛🤟
21st….how did you know? 😉
Um you had a floater in your 15 gallon Column tank :/
bull, depending on how much hardscape takes up the tank determines whether it's a nano tank. on average, 2.5-7 gallons is considered a true nano. But once again, how much hardscape you use can take up room and provide less swimming space and surface area.
Im not a fan of rounded tanks! That being said, anything that holds water is precious and will be filled with snails or fish😝
I like your videos, all your info and specially I enjoy seeing your beautiful face but I do have a complaint your videos are a little bit dark
Never again will i get a 2.5 gal. The bigger the better. Is too hard to scape and put fish in. I feel that even shrimp are to big for them.
Yes, super cute but super confining!
Bettas need a minimum of 5 gallons. Theres a difference between surviving and thriving
hmmmm. why do I keep thinking about being in a library and this woman showing me where the good books are...
