61U is an empty fertilizer train. Goes to Lees Creek, NC irrc. Comes back as a 60U. The yard is simply, East Yard. Star yard is the CP at the very east end past the city water works. Portsmouth is my home terminal. Nice to see someone actually railfan my area. It generally sees little attention. And yes we are very busy since they shut down the humps. Been doing A LOT of flat switching, its actually starting to border on more than we can handle. At 11:30, on the left (with the string of autoracks) is the West Yard (old hump) & Flat yard. That side handles west bound traffic. On the right is the East Yard, it handles east bound traffic. It's so cool to see the yard from the air, I'm so used to be on the ground.
Thank you so much for all the great information! I really do appreciate it. That seems to be the case for a lot of places, business picking up and not enough crews to handle everything. I've been trying to find a time to go from Portsmouth to where the line crosses over into West Virginia and drone that massive bridge. Thanks again and have a great day!
@@nkyrailfan Yes, man power is a huge issue right now. Lot of people furloughed a couple years ago didn't come back (can't blame them) and many of the new hires get a taste of it and decide its not for them. And that would be the Kenova bridge. There's a yard there with a small local crew base.
@@osrr6422 My friend ran the Portsmouth - Bellvue and got furloughed. Never went back. Furloughed from CSX before that. The entire groups who were furloughed - none of them went back to either CSX or NS. Go figure...
I love this as well as all the other excellent videos you provide us. It's great entertainment and wonderful education. In this video, the first 2:30 minutes are filmed in noticeably flat terrain. Just as you pan to the right, or swing southward at the bridge east of Waverly, you can begin to notice that the flat terrain turns to the rolling hills that define southern Ohio. This is the Terminal Moraine. That is, this shows very well the most southern travel point of the glaciers that once covered this area up to a mile high. The hills are the result of the dirt, rocks and gravel that was pushed ahead of those great sheets of ice. Again, thanks for your wonderful videos.
I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thank you very much, I really do appreciate it. I didn't notice the topography change shown in the video until you pointed it out. Thanks for the great information.
I'm just watching this video and noticed at the 1:15 mark a car comes into frame appears to be about 40 deep its wobbling like its about to derail ,as a former 30 year carman for NS I don't think I've ever seen a car do that
I've worked out of the lockborne intermodal facility for the last 2 years. Were either super busy cycling every 2 hours or parsec takes 8 hours to unload a section
Thanks for the Maysville shots. I always appreciate those. It was nice to see how the Portsmouth yard fits in the overall NS routing. That's quite the large yard for not being in a major city.
Glad you enjoyed the video Roy. It is interesting that it's such a large yard given that when built it was only splitting traffic up between Cincinnati and Columbus.
Thank you for the video. It would be interesting for the drone to take a closer look at the Ohio river flood wall closing structures where the railway pass is through the flood wall. I wonder what the railroad does with its traffic when these flood wall gates are closed? Thanks again for the train videos!
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I'll try to keep this in mind the next time the Ohio river overflows its banks and try to make it to Portsmouth to see if the gates are closed and what the RR does.
Thanks Terry, I always appreciate your comments. I've got a couple videos I'm working on and I'm hoping to catch the CSX Ky. Derby train this weekend. So, hopefully it won't be so long between videos. Hope you have a great day!
Great drone shots of the Portsmouth and Waverly area. My folks grew up in that area so I made many trips there to visit family. Your drone video gives a more visual aspect of the area than you see from the highways. I am 80 year old now, but I remember watching steam locomotives hauling coal up north on the very same rail line of your video.
Great video and drone footage. I was wondering about the bridge piers in the Scioto River at Waverly. I know at one time the B&O, C&O and the DT&I converged near the community of Richmond Dale. I just wondered if those piers supported the B&O or the DT&I. Will be interested in your video between Portsmouth and Kenova. I spent a lot of time in the latter part of 1960s photographing trains of the N&W and C&O. I did a writeup of Kenova along with my photos on my website. One thing about Kenova is that it is within 5 miles of Tri-State Airport but if you have your Part 107 license then I don't guess it would be a problem.
Thank you very much Doug. I do appreciate it. I noticed the piers as well. I haven't looked into it too much, but I believe they carried DT&I trackage. I've been to Kenova twice and have not been able to catch any trains. I have had trouble "unlocking" the no fly zone near the bridge but am hopeful staying on the Ohio side will give me a chance to drone the area. Any tips on railfanning the area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again and have a great day.
@@nkyrailfan if you do shoot from the Ohio side there is a road (Perry Hollow Rd) off of old US 52 (4th St) that leads up to a road crossing. From there it is about 500 ft to the north end of the bridge. You may know about this. I did a piece on Kenova on my website. I won't share the url since I don't have your permission in advance. Hey Walter, I condensed the radio audio from the trip down. So, the signals are not that close, you're just hearing him call them all out in a short amount of time.
Oh that pevine line at 6;31. A real shame N@S let go of it. And your unfortunately correct as this will never be revisited in the future. Neglected far to long as upgrades would be cost prohibited. Could have been a perfect directional east west run to Cincinnati
I belive maybe not in our lifetime but one day that line will be brought back.righ5 of ways are not something you just obtain an this arra is way to busy an only getting busier everday
I always wondered why NS would let the line go to waste like it has. I will say given what they've done between Columbus and Portsmouth, I don't know if they will ever reconnect the line. If you haven't been, it's worth checking out. It's a double track, superhighway for trains and is very efficient. I would love to see the Peavine make a return though. I think it would be a really fun line to railfan.

I wasn't sure what would cause a car to wobble like that (a single bad wheel? Bad bearing? Bad alignment? Something else?)

Those automobile bridges remind me of two more as well. The east end of Louisville's I-265 bridge and the William Natcher bridge near Owensboro, KY.

My father moved us all to Florida because his doctor said the cold Ohio winters were slowly killing him! 😮

The grain car (@1:21) is moving sideways very violently.

So whats up with the wobbly car at 1:17 and the fourth last car at 1:41 looks a bit dangerous.
