Norfolk & Western Railroad
Scioto Valley Railroad (1876)
The Norfolk & Western Railway, in Columbus, was originally built as the Scioto Valley Railroad in 1876. It started as a Columbus, Circleville, Chillicothe short line that was extended to Portsmouth in 1878. At first it didn't have much online business and no interchange business to speak of. That all changed when the little, short line was purchased by the Norfolk & Western Railroad in July 1890. This gave the N&W, still building westward through West Virginia, an outlet to the west for its coal traffic. In the beginning it supplied coal to the Sandusky Short Line (later to become the PRR's Sandusky Branch). As time passed it also delivered coal to the PRR for the Logansport (Piqua) line, to the Chesapeake and Ohio for the Toledo docks and to the Toledo and Ohio Central (NYC) also for the Toledo docks.
The line entered Columbus from the south passing through the city just west of Alum Creek to its yard in the northeastern section of Columbus north of Fifth Avenue. It terminated into the Joyce Avenue Yard, an "L" shaped yard that ended near Joyce Avenue where the roundhouse and locomotive servicing facilities were located. By the late 1920's the Joyce Avenue Yard had become too small and the many long freight trains were tying up traffic crossing E. Broad Street and many other Columbus east-west arteries. The Joyce Avenue yard and the PRR Grogan Receiving Yard (renamed Pennor Yard), located adjacent to the N&W yard, were greatly expanded and a high fill was built elevating the tracks through Columbus. This project eliminated 10 grade and two railroad crossings. It increased the capacity of the yard from 1,600 to 3,750 cars. The new PRR Pennor yard was expanded to 10 tracks.

I always like finding paperwork floating around the tracks. Finding any old manuals and such would be interesting. I recently found a map of NS Landers yard in the weeds😂😂😂🧐
I agree with you there, finding that stuff is great, I looked and looked but this place was stripped ..
I've lived in Columbus 35 years and until recently I had no clue the rail infrastructure this town once had. I live over In Hilliard and have worked here for years. Passing the Buckeye Yard over the years you could tell the inevitable was coming. When Conrail had it the place was a really impressive sight to see. Thanks for making this video.
Thank you for watching. I never had the chance to see the buckeye yard conrail days, sure wish I had. But did witness some good NS days. I havecseen many changes in the rail lines, I don't think they for seen the amazon warehousing boom or what's to come. Or they would have kept some lines that are now gone
@@TriGogglin Back in the 90's people (including me) would park on the shoulders after the overpasses Roberts Rd and Traibue walk up on the bridge and watch the yard activity (hump) I heard a commercial developer out of Florida acquired that real estate with intent to put up warehouses. We'll see.

Good morning Anthony. Thank you. I was really hoping to find more. But time has passed to long. The old building was ravaged with trash. But the NW trailer was exciting to me.
Now I live in Nebraska, I go to Fremont Nebraska all the time for deliveries of steel and the railroads run roughshod over the streets up there. So I pull up to Bowman Manufacturing and there si always two BNSF engines sitting burping and growling running. One day I walk over and asked an engineer why do you just leave the engines running. He said it was cheaper to leave them running then starting them up unless it was for more than 24 hours. Dont know how true that can be but they are engineers and conductors and Im a truck driver. Fremont Nebraska has more pound for pound railfanners then any place on earth. North Platte is second.
These locos were tying down waiting on a crew change. So that may be why they were shutting down. But they did start back up not to long after they shut down. 🤔 But I have noticed a many of time they do run and run. My theroy It may be its such a big engine to crank over and kills batteries??? Who really knows 🤣 but I have been to Nebraska and I could railfan there all day.. I loved it didn't want to leave. Really appreciate you watching and this great comment. That was once an expansive yard. The thoroughfare you labeled Joyce Rd. is actually in the suburbs. The thoroughfare that you showed going beneath the yard is called Leonard Ave. (on the NE side of the yard) and E. 5th Ave. (on the SW side of the yard). Actually Joyce AVE. is the one you referred to in the title; however, that passes over the yard.
@@154Colin you are correct on everything you said, but since Joyce rd goes directly over top and you can see the yard from that vantage point, is the reason I referenced it. It's easier for folks to find it that way. Appreciate you watching

Usually if one train stops on one track there might be another train coming on the opposite track across that diamond
Hello Austin, this is correct but in this case the conductor told me as I was leaving, they were out of hours and was waiting on a crew change. So they tied it down. Glad you enjoyed the video

🤣 thanks Anthony, yeah the upper floor kind freaked me out. I'm not 100 percent sure, they aquire the Buckeye yard with was a huge hump yard, and I think this one closed as a result, and now the Buckeye yard is gone as well. The only one left in the Columbus area is the Watkins yard wich is not as big as either one that is gone. But they also have a huge intermodal yard just a bit south of Columbus. A lot of the dates and time lines are sketchy on what I could find. If you haven't seen it, I toured the Buckeye yard and have the list at end of video. Thanks for watching

The last time I passed through Joyce Ave yard, I saw a pack of dogs (German Shepards). Be careful in these areas or have a weapon on you.

Such a massive operation, based on the vintage b&w photos -- where did something that involved relocate; or just shut down and go out of business?
Changing frieght and going from Steam era to Diesel, companies going under, railroads consolidating, New yards were built to accommodate what was here, and what was to what is, it's a shame how things change sometimes, appreciate you watching

The only one I seen was on the main NS building.. unless they were covered by the over grown weeds.. its definitely a cool place to check out. Just becarefull there were some homeless camps in the mix.. appreciate you watching
The major roads have failed to even keep up with the growth of the economy. Result: More traffic to trucks. The Rails no longer believe in themselves. PSR is a joke, and rails are owned by idiots. Sad all around.

The diamond that's intetsects is what's left of the long abandoned T.O.C R.R. which down on w.broad st is the classic old passenger station which is adjacent to the old spaghetti whse..

That's quite an adventure, Pappy - thanks for taking us along! Though I was a little nervous in some of your indoor locations... they don't look so welcoming! Loved the capture of the two locomotives shutting down, too! I don't think I've ever heard that sequence like that before. Lots of neat things, thanks for sharing!

That was actually 2 yards, Grogan yard connected to it, was actually a Pennsylvania yard. That abandoned building was an old switch tower. That was the old Pennsy line to lake Erie, end point being Sandusky. They shipped alot of coal over that route. Line was sold to the N&W back in 1962 , as I recall.
That line is famous, that was the stomping ground back in the 1950s for the operation of leased 2-10-4 steam locomotives from the Santa Fe. Wish I could've witnessed that!😎

I couldn't get to that point, to over grown and some businesses put up.. I may try to look again in the winter when the weeds are dead. Thanks again for the info. Thanks for showing this. I live out of state. Always wanted to check this out when I attended Ohio State in Cbus. Never managed to get there, it's mostly gone now. That's not in the best of location, be careful when going there.

@@TriGogglin I wasn't on for 3 month as far posting. Depression. Trying to get back into it. More shots than anything right now. We survive Ian but clean up took awhile at the park. Still flooded in many areas. We were spared the rough parts.
Most of our staff is down South working on getting things clears up. Danny had to stay behind. AGE . He wanted so badly to go.

Amazing video as always, I've been there a few times as you may have seen in a couple of my videos. I actually have a lot of footage taken there that I still have to upload. At 2:09 that old building is known as the CW Tower which was used to control the signals around that diamond. I actually came across an old photo of it with a Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive and I might include it in a future video if I can get permission to use the photo. At 6:18 I see trains stop there all the time, sometimes they're waiting for several other trains and it'll take a couple hours for them to move either way you're always guaranteed to get some decent action in that area, but the main reason I go back there is because I want to catch something on the former CA & C which is the single track that crosses the two Norfolk Southern main lines. Not to mention that my grandfather grew up in that area and walked throughout that entire rail network during its heyday and I do plan on making a video about some of the stories that he told me of that area. Thanks again for this amazing video!
Awesome, when you shown a few things in some of your videos I didn't realize it was it was that ca&c line. That red building was freaky upstairs didn't stay long. Creeped me out. 🤣 I liked the spot the train stopped. I got a train passing that one, but didn't want the video to long so I'll post it separately. I was really hoping to find a little more but it was so over grown, you might have better luck in the winter. When the weeds are dead. You can see on Google where 670 and 71 meet the remnants of the old round house that I think was prr back then. It's covered with a salt pile now. It sure does David, it's strange to me why NS doesn't use this spot. They have the Watkins yard south of here and always Block traffic building trains, this is obve traffic... so why would they let it go to waste

The brick building was known as CW Tower and controlled the movements of the PRR & N & W...the diamond shown was where the Cleveland Akron and Columbus (C A & C)/Akron Secondary crossed on its way to Westerville, Sunbury, Mt. Vernon, and other towns north through Akron and ending in Hudson...the branch lasted until 1982...what's left extends to 17th Avenue...
