For a lot of people this can be extremely overwhelming given all the information in this video, so what I recommend is to just watch at least one section of this video a day until you have finished the whole video, then, repeat at least 3 times. It will probably seem boring and repetitive but trusty me all the information in this video is going to subconsciously be transferred into your brain without you knowing it. It is truly the best way to learn a great deal of info. Good luck :D
Great tip, especially mentioning to watch it 3 times :) I myself say I understand more the second time around but wouldn't have thought to do it here! Great help + comment.
I'm a Sound Production student at a university, and I just watched this video to see if there's anything I didn't know about. Turns out there's a lot more than I actually knew. What a great lesson. Liked and subscribed!
Spent a lot of years on the radio. Those who experienced broadcasting back in the day will know what I mean when I say I was great "with a razor blade and a grease pencil." Radio days have been gone a while. Professional photographer now missing his radio days. Gotta get back to audio production. Got the equipment and now have to learn from scratch. Dave has been the best tutorial instructor I've found. Thanks...I'll be back!
This is far and away the best introduction to audio production that I've been able to find on UA-cam or anywhere else. Extremely helpful for newcomers like me. I recently got the use of a Sound Devices MixPre-6 and have found myself feeling lost while watching Curtis Judd's excellent (paid) introductory course. This excellent basic tutorial will help greatly.
Agreed! I've taken a few courses in audio technology and engineering, and I'd say he really explained this content well. There were a lot of moments where I was like "Ooooh! I finally get it!"
I don't think it matters alot datawise with todays gear wether you choose 16 or 24bit. But you should point out that the typical signal to noisefloor obtainable today by most gear is about 70db wich makes 16bit's 65k levels more than enough for the human ear. You could technically get away with 48khz 12bit and you wouldn't be able to hear the difference between 48khz 16bit or 24bit if your gains is set for optimal s/n ratio. our ears is just not that "fine tuned" for level changes. 12 bit covers 4096 levels wich should be enough to cover -50db wich is about where a young human starts to being able to hear background noise. So if you record a signal at -10db, your ear can't distinguish noise at -60db or lower.
I'm an old Studio rat. I checkout basic audio Production videos to see if I forgotten or skipped over anything. Three things happened, I learned new information, reinforced old information, and corrected some mistakes that have crept into my production over the years. Great video!
This is the kind of tutorial you really need to watch before make any investment. Usually, the info you get around is more about brands and theirs spectacular specs, but that approach use to be confusing, a waste of time and money rather than useful. What you explain instead is the key thing: what actually these things are about, options you have and their proper use in any situation or need. Thank you so much Dave!.
Yo, I've been in the stagehand/audio world for many years and I never went to audio school. Ive run countless bands throughout my experience, content like this is just incredible for somebody like myself and I thank you a million. What a time to be alive lol, hopefully they never invent a robot with ears.
Total new kid to sound recording and production - this video is brilliant, making the subject so clear and simple without being simplistic. Thanks so much for this!
I’ve done a degree in music which taught me nothing and I mean nothing about music tech. All theory and scoring by Sibelius, that was the closest we got to tech. I’ve always felt like music tech was a huge hole in my knowledge and as an aspiring voice over artist it’s been a source of great shame. Your video has made this whole world so much more approachable. I feel like I’m starting to understand the physics of music and how signal works so that when I go to record an audiobook i know what to do to get the best sound. Will definitely be subscribing, thank you! Xx
I'm way beyond this video, just happened to pop up in autoplay, still stayed for the amazing quality and well laid out course anyone could understand.. Well done!
I teach audio, as an Audio engineer in small groups. This is an absolutely wonderful tool. Thanks a lot for live demo. It no more sounds theoritical.. i am learning..
Thank you sir. I have been recording and making music since 1993. Thank you for you clearing up all those questions I still had. You rock sir!! Thank you again!
Great Job - Envato: Take Notes ! Create a go to book of knowledge you can reference anytime - Envato, has nailed Recording 101 down. I like the way he cuts to the chase and dishes it out.
Been doing music more seriously for 2 years and decided to freshen up on some learning. This information is invaluable. Thank you for taking the time. Also been wanting to do reaper. I primarily use ableton. Great bonus to see the daw workspace.
Ive been makin music for 40 years.. and I have to say.. You really know your shit! Great info and in great detail!! I know this video is older.. but keep it up!
This is incredibly helpful. I am a complete beginner, but I learn quickly, and I was having trouble finding a tutorial for recording that wasn't starting with the assumption that you had some experience, or was going so slowly that I can't maintain focus. The examples provided are so helpful, and this video seems to be the next thing to an expert sitting down with you and teaching you in person.
This is such a kick-ass tutorial for anyone who wants to understand their music setups, I understood about half but after I watch this about 100 more times I'm hoping this will sink in. I can't thank you enough for this food for thought. Great tutorial. Thank you! PS. Also subscribed.
I have been searching for something like this for months, and the only thing I can focus on is the mouth squishes?! Outstanding information very neatly delivered. A little post would’ve helped tremendously, but I’m giving a hard time. Thank you for this
I took pages of notes during this video. Thank you so much!!! U should monetize, cuz I would've watched every ad, u deserve to get paid! Great intro course! Thank you!
Only of this came out before I went to NEiA. You taught everything in 1 hour that the "professors" would stop every ten minutes to tell their corny 33 minute music industry jokes. Though I do know of all that you've taught here. Just refreshing the brain on a few things before I step back into the audio spectrum (pun intended). Ultimately? I want to run my own small studio.
WOW! Such great detail and clear teaching. I'm so glad I found this video and I feel ready to start moving forward with my audio career now. Thank You!!!
Very well done. 👍 Just in case this hasn’t already been pointed out, it appears the narrative around 22:30 is incorrect. After testing the directional mic, the proximity effect and increased bass response is noticeable. However, your comment “[paraphrased] you should have heard the bass increase as I got closer” occurs only after testing the *omnidirectional* mic, which I don’t think exhibited that response. A simple edit, swapping out that line to follow the previous clip might clear up the issue and prevent any confusion. But I could be wrong or missing something. Cheers & thanks for the great instruction.
Found this video on accident but this is by far one of the most informative and detailed videos I’ve seen in a long time..very excellent presentation. 👍🏾👍🏾
Hi there, great video on these subjects. I have just gotten a Novation circuit rhythm groovebox sampler. Its a great product and it's also portable and also runs on batteries. Yes it also has connection to outlet to recharge the batteries or use it while connected to a power outlet. My concern with this product is that if i want to use it with just the headphones, it is too low of volume even if the volume knob is all the way up. My hearing is not all that great. I have a hearing loss since birth. Still can hear a little bit through the headphones. but no issues when using the headphones on other devices such as my audio interface, and iphone. Its just that the Novation circuit rhythm device has low volume power. unless i connect the Novation Circuit rhythm to an amp or audio interface and connect my headphones on the audio interface and i'd be fine. But there times when i want to hear the sounds coming out of the circuit rhythm since it doesnt have speakers. The circuit rhythm has outputs 1/4 ts jacks on the rear of the unit. I have and still use it to this day a Digi 003 rack mount audio interface by digidesign. Still works for me. Only issue I have wth the digi 003 is that it now makes this static noise when i turn the buttons up or down. What cables should i use to connect the outputs of the circuit rhythm to an amp source in order to hear the sounds of the circuit rhythm? should I connect it to my audio interface? please let me know. Thank you.
Got here by accident but i stayed for the long haul and it was well worth my time. I've saved the video and subscribed. Thanks So much , keep up the great work.
You make a fantastic teacher! This video was very easy to understand, kept me interested the entire time, was well structured, and full of knowledge. Thank you very much!
Excellent store of information to learn about audio/ sound ... Anyone who is a beginner or going to start the way I have done few days ago, this is the place ...you have really delivered an excellent tutorial. I may say thanks million times will still be less. I am going to view it few times now in the coming weeks
What a fantastic production! Thankyou so much for clearly explaining the ins and outs of recording and the equipment used. And no stupid carry on attention seeking. So refreshing!
some audio interfaces do come with built-in preamps though. for example, the Focusrite scarlet series. so I think for newbies it could possibly be easier and more cost-effective to purchase one like that over buying both a separate audio interface and preamp.
This is an absolutely amazing and exhaustive guide! I've learned SO MUCH from this video. I definitely didn't expect this to have so much substance! I will have to watch this multiple times before I'm able to digest this in its entirety. Thank you for this full-course knowledge meal 😁😎🙌🙌🙌
Thanks so much Dave that was explained so clearly I learnt a lot I look forward to future videos I have a nine-year-old niece who composes her own music on both guitar and piano so far , she is amazing , so I thought I’d set up the recording studio. I had previous experience as DJ and hanging around musicians you’ve just made a little bit more clearer what I’m doing. Appreciate your clear and concise teaching. Mike J
What a great class on sound recording.. I have always enjoyed having a sound tech when I worked but on my own later I realize what an art it is to record well.. "I love peanut butter and jelly" is where it all came together for me
thats what im saying
Good job actually going into depth and showing us actual information, whereas most people just sit there yapping in their videos.

Hi Are u a Audio video engineer?

Great video. The cable twisting suggestion is spot on. My 50 foot power cables have been really messed up over the years.
The best basic technical tutorial on audio I have seen so far.
I’ve done a degree in music which taught me nothing and I mean nothing about music tech. All theory and scoring by Sibelius, that was the closest we got to tech. Thanks for that!
I am an on set sound recordist majorly in film and this video has helped me a lot I use a Zoom F8n and sound devices Mix-Pre6 mark 2

Thanks
Brilliant Tutorial - This takes a lot of work behind the scenes - Thank You
Glad it was helpful!
This guy is legendary! I've learned so much about Adobe AE and Premier from his in-depth Envato Tuts tutorials. Now, I'm about to learn Audio.
Been doing music more seriously for 2 years and decided to freshen up on some learning. This information is invaluable. Thank you for taking the time. Also been wanting to do reaper. I primarily use ableton. Great bonus to see the daw workspace.
Took notes of 5 pages.

What a fantastic production! Thankyou so much for clearly explaining the ins and outs of recording and the equipment used. And no stupid carry on attention seeking. So refreshing!
Thanks. Glad to hear you found it useful.
An organized presentation - very good production values
Glad you enjoyed it!
Best audio recording course I've found. If this guy was teaching at a nearby University I would take his classes.

More like most

I loved every second of it.

Thank you for going into such depth! Sure helpful
Wow! I never knew that just one minute of basic 16-bit / 44.1kHz audio records 84 megabytes of data!! Thanks Envato Tuts+!
that's what happen when you have 16 channels
16 channels × 16 bits × 44100 / 8 × 60 seconds = 84 672 000 bytes every minute
Brilliant video - thank You for taking the time and sharing! 😊
I m very thankful of your work. More power to you !!!
So nice of you!
Thanks. Just what I was looking for to get started. Appreciate the in-depth introduction.
Practically an entire course.. Thanks!
Finally I got what I'm looking for... Thanks
No problem!
What a great class on sound recording.. I have always enjoyed having a sound tech when I worked but on my own later I realize what an art it is to record well.. I am struggling now to get a feel for DAW recording and using my 24 track as an interface device.. I paid some attention to my sound guys and watched from time to time but that doesn't make me much more qualified to engineer sound than him watching me play guitars and sing qualifies him to play on this side of the desk.. I need fundamentals and basic methodology..
Great info. Never seen anyone teach how to wrap cables
It is an important skill! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this incredibly all-inclusive informational resource! I have learned so much!
I REALLY APPRECIATE THIS CONTENT! Thank you so much!
I use the MXL 991 too for acoustic guitar🙂
Am about to take up media production and a 2nd degree in music production any best books or even the books for college for audio production 2?
Thank you for the BEST course I have done online and since I had only minimal prior knowledge on the topic, the info you gave was super helpful. Thanks again :)
You're very welcome!
Great video; love how effective you are at explaining these concepts!!!🙏🙏🙏
Very helpful.. keep up the good work sir. Great introduction for beginners
Very helpful. Thanks Dave.
Glad it was helpful!
