This video gives the basics of frequency and using an equalizer. It was originally prepared for in-studio and online classes at Lil' Drummaboy Recordings (Philadelphia, PA) @ LDB10.COM.
It was an absolute pleasure making this video. I love this craft of OURs. By the way, I created a comprehensive Audio Engineering training program that is helping music creators (like you) earn more revenue, expand their careers in the music industry, and increase their demand. It's called 'The Audio Engineering Blueprint'. Here's the link to learn more: theblueprint.samoricoles.com/
I’m an Audio Engineer/Musician and oh boy did this guy explain my entire school program in less than an hour. I payed over $18k for this and still took me years to learn most of the hacks I know today, hence why I’m still watching “UA-cam UNIVERSITY” to help me better understand the beauty of frequencies. This is a complete 101 on frequencies, and this person simplified it to its roots. I want to take the time to appreciate you for sharing this with the world, and would like to encourage anyone seeking constructive knowledge of audio to watch this video and make a life standard to know this basis. 👍🏻
Thank you so much! I'm glad you found my video helpful!
This is what i was searching for 7 months... Even spent 29 dollars for an online course but the knowledge you gave is priceless.. God bless you!
The best tutorial on EQ that I've seen on UA-cam. Clear, thorough, and pedagogical.
ua-cam.com/video/V3zwF--QKss/v-deo.html
Perspicuous Pedagogical Method, indeed! Great word @Omar Yousaf !
The BEST comment on EQ tutorials that I've seen on UA-cam. Clear, Thoreaux, and pathological.
@@brandonbuzak2973 LOL!
Wow I can’t remember the last time I had to go look up a new word! Thank you!!
Guys Because The video is very long I got the topics to help you find what you are looking for
Frequency:
0:25 Explaining and talking about frequency
4:15 The Meter of the frequency for the individual sound for an instrument and the frequency to the dirt that you wanna remove in your mixing
11:45 Some more information rules and things to remember about the frequency
Equalizer:
14:10 Basics of the Equalizer
16:51 showing the tools of the equalizer and the equalizer itself
21:16 Frequency filter types
25:12 "Rules" to equalization
29:41 Parametric Vs Graphic Equalizer
31:30 Showing Examples and how to work with the Equalizer
That's it guys I hope you will find this useful because I am and thanks Samori for the amazing video it helped a lot and it was worth the time
Thanks..
Anyways it's worth to watch the whole video
LEGEND
Thank you, Mark!
I gotta tell you, anybody that has gotten this far, doesn't have the slightest issue with the length of your video. But, all the help us newbies get is deeply and highly appreciated. For me, watching the whole thing is more effective because I connect the dots a bit easier. Blessings, my brothers and sisters.
Doing God's work here my friend. Thanks for the summary.
6 years later & this is the best tutorial I have ever found because you actually broke down the fundamentals of what people need to understand rather than just messing around with buttons thanks!!!!
Tehilah Crasta Thank you for watching, and for your feedback. I believe that teaching the fundamentals will give folks a solid foundation to build from. Best of luck!
same here, out off all the videos i find this very informative.
I'm embarrassed. I've been playing, writing and recording for over 30 years. You taught me things about frequencies that I wish I knew long ago. Thanks! I am now working with pro tools and trying to get better at mixing and mastering skills.
how amazing this tutorial is! Nice , slow, and precise! Ideal for someone like me who's starting ❤
Awesome video! Thank you so much, I learned a lot! I got more information from this video than my $200 textbook I bought in college!
Thank you, Paige! And, I am happy to know that you gained more insight into the subject. Best of luck to you!
So far, in the past 10 years, this is THE best video on EQ'ing. Very well explained, knowledgeable, and not some dude who watched every other video BUT yours and regurgitated it without actually using the techniques and has no solid foundation. Thank You!
AColdPiece Wow, Thank you for your generous feedback! I’m glad that you gained value from my video! I wish you the best on your audio journey...
@@iamsamori Absolutely a master class THANK YOU.
I know this may seem slightly unfair to other UA-camrs who have made videos on this subject but, this is definitely the best tutorial out there compared to all the others. It actually breaks it down, no bullshit. Thank you.
Thank you for such a helpful video! You explained these concepts so clearly and in a way that we can apply them. More please!
thank you for watching, luis ochoa, phbz, steven enninful, arlo4823 and everyone else. You certainly motivate me to make more videos. Make great music and recordings, Brothers!
+Samori Coles can u give a list of freqs to help my vocals stand out please

That was really clear. I feel like after reading and watching so many vids on EQ This one helped it all to finally click. Thank you very much for such a well thought out video. Excellent teaching!
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the being the person you are. This has helped tremendously and was wildly fascinating.
Bro, BY FARRRR the best on youtube. Wether you're just getting started like me or just want to brush up your skill, this will help. Thank you so much
You're welcome!
This is by far the best explanation of Frequency and equalizer I've watched on youtube. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world. As a home recording artist, I'm grateful!
this video was so damn informatitive . there were things that i've been wondering for months, and u came and just broke it down in 40 minutes. THANK YOU.
your way of presenting is one of the best i've seen on youtube
Adsman Uno I’m glad that you found my video helpful! Thank you for your feedback. Best of luck in your audio journey!
I know this is like 2 1/2 years later, but this was incredibly helpful, and you've demystified the heaviest hitting anomalies for me in EQing. Thank you!
Awesome, Jake! I'm glad the topic of frequency and eq is a bit more clear to you.
Thanks... Im 68, been home recording for maybe 10 years, did not had any idea what was the equalizer for, or better said, I thought it was for all instruments, the whole recording, now, in maybe two hours, I learned that you can define, setup your EQ per track, meaning per instrument.
Keep it coming.
You explained it very well, very simple.
This is the best explanation of equalizers and how to tune music I have read so far. Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback, Harry! I'm glad that you gained a bit more knowledge from the video! Best of luck on your audio journey.
I went from "hunting a good podcast mic" a couple weeks ago to developing enough interest to learn audio engineering. I love music and digital workspaces, so I'm hoping to turn this into a hobby and potentially a career.
Thanks so much for creating this content, and giving me the opportunity to educate myself.
Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. Thanks again
Best video on EQ I have ever seen...period! Thank you.
Thank you, Arpeggio Bro! I am glad that you find the video helpful.
This is one of the first, if not the first video that I ever saw regarding EQ and understanding sound.
I saw this video along time ago. I wanted to come back to give you a quick thanks for this video; it got me started with everything regarding sound. I am now making a living as a sound engineer & I wanted to come back and appreciate your video on your channel.
Thank you!
Outstanding tutorial, one of the most clear, concise ones I've seen.

Best eq tutorial you will find online...is so explicit and clear you can't get better then this...good job
I searched everywhere for someone that explains this really well because I am a noobie and you are the best teacher on youtube :D
It's been six years man, but this video is still so full of solid information and advice. Thank you so much for making it. Cheers!
Glad that you found the information useful, Will! More coming very soon...
There has not been anyone I've come across that has made this comprehensible to me as you have done in explaining the way EQ works. This video has finally helped me to understand what I've been trying to get. Thank you!
+Ryan Lewis I am so glad that you found the video helpful, Ryan. Best of luck to you and your audio endeavors.

by far best video on freq an eq. thanks!
Thank you so much, Marina! I am glad that you found the EQ video helpful.
Not a prob!
YEP
I really can't think of anything additional to say about the quality and effectiveness of this video. I am a Music Production student @ Full Sail University. This is on par with some of the best tutorials (and in some ways surpass them in the way of simplicity) I have seen. I just want to say Thank you! What you have contributed to the profession is tremendous! It's all about building on what you've shown from here, i.e. ear training, gear training and other applications!
Steve Adams I am glad that you found the EQ video helpful, Steve. And, thank you for your gracious feedback!
Steve Adams I am glad that you found the EQ video helpful, Steve. And, thank you for your gracious feedback!
By far, the most in depth, well explained video on EQ
If this guy isn't a teacher, he should be. Possibly the best tutorial I've seen on any topic on UA-cam. Unless you're an expert already you should watch this. Clear and comprehensible. Particularly good for those of us who are musicians first and engineers by necessity. Excellent!
Wow, thank you, Beefheart1! I appreciate your generous feedback! I'm glad that you found the video useful for what you are doing in music and audio. Cheers!
I have no idea how I found your channel but I'm so glad I did. I've learned a lot. Thank your for taking the time to make this and educate.
No problem, Oncle Mack! Glad you were able to learn more about the subject!
wow !you are a great teacher. I can't wait to see some of your other videos.. With UA-cam you almost don't need to go to school. thank you so much.
carlos gueddes You are welcome!
Yes agree!
Thank you so much. I came to recording and mixing late in life (71). Your tutorial is the best and clearest in what does what, and the technical names in EQ that I have come across. Once again....Thanks!
After viewing hundreds of videos, "I'm boosting this and cutting that" without any explanation as to how they even selected what to boost or cut, comes along a straight forward no nonsense tutorial. Learned a lot.
Thank you arlo4823. Your kind words add to my motivation to produce more videos!
Best EQ tutorial I've ever watched. Excellent explanations and examples, thank you so much for this!
XxTrigg3rHappyxX You are welcome! I am happy that the video was helpful for you!
I just came across this one - excellent! One of the best intros to EQ/Freq's I've seen. Very useful, Thanks.....and thanks to Mark Kogan for breaking the video down.
Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video. Best of luck to you in your audio endeavors!
This video is the definitive standard for this topic.
Love your teaching style. Very simple and to the point. Much better than relying on fancy cameras and effects
This is the most helpful video I've watched for music production. I've been digging around for hours trying to find how to eq kicks and subs and nothing helps...this helps me with everything. And you taught this course extremely well, and I come from a family of teachers and professors.
+OJ Shrink I truly appreciate your kind words! I remember how difficult it was to get good information on Audio Engineering when I began my journey (mid 90s). I am glad that you found the video helpful. Best of luck in the Craft!
By far, one of the best explanations I've ever witnessed... very impressed and inspired..salute
Salute! And, thank you!
Best video ever on EQ I found on UA-cam. Thanks for taking your time to share your knowledge
BY FAR the best video on EQ I have ever seen. Thank you!
finally found the most comprehensive tutorial on the subject. good job!
I really appreciate that, Benjo! Glad you found the video helpful!
Thank you, Samori. Very helpful. My first EQ lesson. Clear and concise.
+Tom Marshall You are welcome! Best of luck in your Audio Engineering journey...
I probably learned more of this topic in 45min than reading all the manuals, books and watching videos I've done before. Thank you so very much for providing this for free!!
Something about your delivery method makes all this complicated stuff easily digestible. Thanks for this!
I have a electrical engineering background and your video explains frequency very well. Well done!
Thank you, Rashad! In the beginning, many audio engineers had backgrounds in electrical engineering. Excellent field of study for this craft!
Samori, thank you. A great job all around. I'll be watching your tutorials as I encounter the many aspects and challenges of audio recording. Yours is just the type of approach I benefit from.
You've explained the fundamentals of how eq relates to frequencies and vice versa in a way that I can understand.
Thank you again.
Awesome! I'm glad that the video helped. Best of luck on your audio journey. If you are in need of further guidance and mentorship, visit my website at homestudiotutor.com.
this video is really old, but i find it being one of the most informative and hand holding guides ever. thank you so much for clearing a bunch of stuff out for me. subbed
THE best tutorial on equalisation, if you're a beginner. If you're coming across this video, and see the length of video as 44 minutes,do not pass on this. It'll definitely be a worthwhile 44 minutes. Thanks a bunch Mr.Coles!
Thank You! So far that's the best tutorial I watched on how to use EQ and more! Very informative to me.
Thank you, Jordany! I'm glad that you found the video informative.
Thank you Samori. An excellent tutorial - detailed without waffling, well ordered, logical and articulate. Such a pleasure NOT to hear 'like' 'kinda' 'y'know' 'er' 'um' that so many UA-cam videos are cursed with.
As a newcomer to recording and mixing in the budget home-studio world, I found this immensely helpful and one of the best audio tutorials I've seen. I'll be using this A LOT!
I'm off to watch the rest of your vids right now.
Peace.
+keef sixstring You're welcome! And, thank you for your kind words! The key is consistency, patience and repetition. Best of luck to you!
Yes, clear, concise communication on a subject with which I have been BAFFLED thru decades as a musician! Thanks to your professionally articulated tutorial - FINALLY! I UNDERSTAND FREQUENCY, SOUND, EQ and so MUSIC itself!!!
Hugs snd kisses for that!!!!
dude i cant thank you enough. ive had a struggle learning equalizing but i learned about a million and two things from this video and was all easy to understand
You're most welcome! I'm glad you learned from the video!
This is EXCELLENT! 100% the BEST vid I've seen on this topic. You're an incredibly talented teacher. THANK YOU and please make more.
Great tutorial! This needs to be step 1 for all producers and engineers. Very thorough explanations and application. Well worth my time watching...thanks again!
No problem, Dayton! Best of luck to you on your audio journey!
Thanks for putting the time into this clip. Its completely changed my turn and hope approach to EQ.
I'm glad that you found my video useful, Sean!
I agree with Omar Yousaf. This was easily the best tutorial I have seen. You made it so easy to understand the whole process. Thank you
those 214, I hope you found what you needed because THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE AND GREAT. HOURS OF LINKEDIN LEARNING AND IT DID NOT EXPLAIN IT LIKE THIS.... THIS IS LIKE EQ 101, FOREAL FOREAL, ITS LIKE EQ 100. THE PRE TO THE REAL DEAL BECAUSE NOW THAT STUFF MAKES SENSE NOW THAT THESE QUESTIONS WERE DIRECTLY ADDRESSED AND ANSWERED.... YESSSS I'M YELLING IN MY HEAD OMG THANK YOU SAMORI
oh my God, after feeling headache for months, finally you equalized me!!!
thanks a lot
+Abdirahman Somali You are too funny, Abdirahman! I am glad that you found my video tutorial helpful!
this is one of most best tutorial ever, tnx a lot for your time and share of knowledge. Personally i highly appreciate and God bless
By far, hands down, the best explanation on EQ I've ever seen on UA-cam!!!
You are a wonderful teacher, I don't know ANYTHING about this stuff, but thanks to you I am gaining a real understanding. Blessings to you
Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I went to college for sound engineering , and record field audio on sets. So sometimes I get rusty on the basics ( No shame!) because I don't do much post work. You explain everything very well and clear. You rule!
Thank you for your feedback, Ryan! Glad the video helped!
well done easy to learn with a great tutor , even took notes thanks
Thank you, Clutch! I appreciate your feedback.
I started off a little bored with the explanation in the beginning but it all made sense by the end! I appreciate your in depth explanation. This will help my mixes tremendously! Definitely extended my understanding! Thank you!
therealshakar Glad that you found the video helpful. I always try to focus on the what’s, why’s and how’s.
I never comment on stuff, but for this I had to make an exception. I've checked out dozens of vids, trying to learn how to use EQ in Logic Pro X and gotten nowhere. This one completely opened my eyes. I knew about 'frequencies' and I knew what an Equalizer was 'supposed to do', but this is the only vid I've found that puts the two together. The balance of technical information and sensible appliction is perfect for the beginner (me!) After weeks of swimming around in my vocal takes, I've finally got a handle on it. Thank you!
That's fantastic! I am glad that the information was helpful to you.
Thanks samori! Really informative, educational and serious! Thank you.
+Tartonga You're welcome, Tartonga. Thank you for the feedback.
You broke this whole concept down. Great job please make more!
+BePreparedNews I'm glad the video helped! I will do my best to prepare more vids...
Thank you
The clarity of your explaining got me to finally understanding the eq when i was overthinking and overdoing.... HERES A THUMBS UP AND A SUBSCRIPTION!!💵💲
Thank you so much! I'm glad that you found the video informative.
@@iamsamori Im in the studio now putting ot to work. Thanks again 😁
Out of all the fancy videos I have watched, yours is the only one I understood from. I love your way of teaching please make more videos about mixing, mastering, live sound, and just audio engineering in general
Thank you! I will definitely be making more videos. Glad you find my teaching-style helpful.
This was perfect… wish you did a video like this on every single part of engineering lol
Thank you for watching! Glad that you found the information helpful!
Thanks!!!!! This was an excellent Introductory Course I have learned and now understand a lot more
You're welcome, Hobz The Prophet! I am happy to know that this information will build upon your understanding of frequency and equalization!
I been watching this for years never get old GEMS.
thank you for this video. you explained the basics of what frequency and equalization is really well, used actual terminology and didnt have any clickbaity stuff and then actually applied those fundamentals in a very easy to understand example. subscribed! the people who downvoted your video probably couldn't sit through a lecture and dont care about key important details.
Absolutely great video thank you for taking the time to put this together
You're welcome, Sir! Thank you for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
This is great, even for some of us more advanced producers. Sometimes we forget the basic science and get too clever with manipulation. I would say one thing though, but this is just my method so take it with a pinch of salt! I tend to do most of my boosting on the way in using hardware, and the clinical cutting I use plugins for that precision, then for laughs I usually run it back out for a final polish, but thats usually because I just love running my audio through some voltage! Thank you so much Mr Coles!
+Steven Hosszu Thank you for your feedback, Steven. One of the reasons that I love our craft is that there are so many ways to accomplish a multitude of tasks. You never stop learning and being inspired by techniques that others are using. One of the big challenges is to trust your methods, and most importantly your EARS. I see our craft as being guided by levels of generally accepted standards, and tried & true best practices. But there are not rules that are set in stone. Great ears, general knowledge of the basic audio tools, and a producer's instinct, can produce records that sound as commercially viable as tunes that get radio play.
U r the only person who has been so sincere in frequency explanation, right to the point......there are lots of videos made by others on EQ but everyone just beats around the bush...
Thank you for your feedback! I'm glad that you found my video helpful. Best of luck on your audio journey!
Absolutely flawless Tutorial in its value, quality of information and probably most important and certainly rarest the clarity & simplicity in your explication of the instructions and the 'why' , Thank You ! Thank you. I shared with a few friends (some who have paid good $ for just EQ tutorial alone) and they ALL agreed , definitely THE BEST EQ tutorial on and off UA-cam they've received, seen or heard. I don't care if this vid is 9 years old, its value still holds and will continue to do so. No fancy bells or whistles (graphics, FX ,Logos) , gimmicks, use or over-use of Music Engineer Jargon/language that causes more confusion than what one had before watching a tutorial. Just very sound, Clear, to the point instructions, with the precision an ICBM missile ,lol excellent job once again thank you good brother.
Thank you so much! I'm glad that my video helped clarify the topics of Frequency and EQ for you!
Thanks so much Samori - this is the clearest and most helpful explanation I've found, much appreciated! Have you any tips for EQing in the mastering stage too?
I am happy to hear that you found the video useful, Stefanie! EQing in the mastering stage depends on whether or not you still have control of the mix. In other words, if your mastering via the 'Stereo Out' or 'Main Out' in a mix that you're working on, you could still deal with frequency issues on a track by track basis. If your mastering from a 2-track stereo mixdown, then EQ decisions would be dependent on what you feel the mix needs (i.e. less mud, brighter high end, tighter mids, etc.). I know this doesn't give you a definite answer, but there are a few too many variables involved with mastering to be as specific as I wish I could be for you.
This is amazing. Def following and recommending.
I appreciate that, Odious! Much success to you!
IM already playing with my analog-stand alone recorder and it works beautifully, next will try it with DAW.
This guy is amazing, great teacher.
Awesome. So far the best & easy to understand tutorial on mixing & equalization I have viewed & encountered. Thank you very much for sharing.
love it, gold right here
+Lange Man Thank you, Lange!
Thankyou so much for sharing , It really helped me to understand the concept of Equalizer
You're welcome, Shehzad! I'm elated that you found the video useful!
plz do share more if you can , i would be indebted
This is the best explanation I found for this topic. The first five minutes of your presentation clarified things for me better than several other whole videos. Thank you.
First time ever i watch a video 45min ... need more of this .. Compressor / noise gate /FX etc
fantastic tutorial! thank you soo much!!
+Samir Pashayev You're welcome, Samir. Thank you for your generous feedback.
The Best EQ and Frequency Explanation .. thank you for taking the time to do this sir..
techingo666 You're welcome. And, thank you for taking the time to watch.
The best EQ video I have seen so far
Thank you, Melvin!
Samori, thank you. This is a great comprehensive tutorial for frequency and EQ which has helped me with my own home studio music production.

+Michael Caliri Thanks Michael!

samori, with my eyes closed listening to your voice, it reminded me a bit of denzel Washington!
Lol.
