@@AQueerMenace when I said that I meant you should disclose to a person your having physical relations with what you biologically were only because of the situation you just saw in video. You never know how someone Is going to react if they find out after being with you and not knowing. It could be dangerous that's all

Even more important: nobody talks about the urgent mental health needs of people with gender dysphoria. She was obviously struggling greatly and put herself in danger because of it, plus, transgender people are particularly vulnerable to violence ☹️

You gotta love all these cases where they somehow kill someone accidentally then decide to hide the body and then proceed to lie about everything until the evidence is piling up.
Not to mention fleeing the country and somehow not being able to figure out how to Google the police department that's looking for you.... If this guy even had two brain cells to rub together he'd have been able to foresee how bad all of it really was.... 🙄

I think they hedge their bets hoping the evidence isn't there. And they certainly aren't going to admit to anything. They go right to the very end of the road usually. I work with parolees and even when sentenced there is typically zero accountability.
So, he was sentenced to 20 years, the maximum for 2nd degree murder. When that runs out, maybe we should all remind the criminal justice system, he is still owed a charge for aggravated sexual assault of a minor.
Age of consent in WA is 16.

@@dandididann Yes, it's dangerous to lie about who you are, have sex with someone under the pretense of being a female, and then saying "just kidding i'm a guy" and assuming that everyone is going to be okay with that. Also, if he lied about his gender you have absolutely no way of knowing that he didn't also lie about his age. Lies can get you into situations you can never come back from. This is one of them.

It's crazy but it's also entirely believable because this is how cops are. Did they do anything to push the investigation forward and suspect his or his brothers' hateful behaviour, or were their hands forced when someone found her body 6 months later?
The victim’s mom did ask the judge to cancel her murderer by letting him rot in jail.

I gotta say you're one of my favorite true crime channels. Much respect for the work you do to tell the victims story. I know it might be an odd question but could do a video about my grandmother and the women that were murdered in the 70s around Western North Carolina by a man named ronald clay smith I would greatly appreciate it. She was murdered when my mother was 9 so obviously I never met her, but it would be nice to have a little light shown on her case. Again thanks for all you do.

He felt violated. Another case in the U K the person was convicted of rape.
Not excusing the guy that killed her but there are other cases.
A transperson should always let the other person know before they engage in any sexual act. because the other person can't give consent if they don't know the facts.

Not to discount the guilt of this perpetrator but I find the mothers blasé attitude more than troublesome. I was a single mom to two rather wild sons. There was never a time, even working two jobs that I was not up in their lives like white on rice. And for her daughter to have survived gunshots and then be allowed to couch surf and be an active drug addict at 17…… hmmmm
I agree I think there is more to learn from these cases than just people are horrible. I know people don't want to pile on to someone when they go through something but lady, help your kid!
I agree the mother took zero responsibility for her son carrying on like he was and he died over it....better parenting could have prevented this

Lisa had a close relationship with her daughter but didn't live with her and let her run the streets like an adult? Only David is to blame for what happened to Nikki but Lisa definitely failed as a mother. She knew something would happen to Nikki eventually with all her risky behavior as a minor! she was previously shot 6 times!! I wouldn't let my child out of my sight just out of sheer gratitude they escaped death!!

it’s funny how I remember Nikki Kuhnhausen: her spunk, her self-confidence in who she is, her inner & outer beauty, her super supportive community including her family. and Yet I completely forgot about this monster and who he was and how it happened. I usually tend to avoid listening to her story again because it really is truly painful. I’m not a member of her community however, I fully support her community. ALL THE LETTERS! (i can’t remember them all so I’m not gonna leave anybody out if I try to remember so that’s why I say all the letters.) I don’t think I recall the judge tearing up, so thank you for that new information. also, I love the way you tell your stories.

You’re right- here he was trying to get with a 17 year old girl, he’s disgusting! That fantasy about the cellphone charger slipping from her torso up to her neck by accident was ridiculous! What’s even crazier is it looping itself three times mid struggle! He’s had months to come up with a plausible explanation before he’s interviewed that first time. Instead he says umm and I think throughout the process-just stalling for time so he can think of something to say. He’s guilty of pure hatred- it’s too bad the penalties for a murder via hate crime gets you less than 20 years in Canada! That needs to change.
It’s actually common for murderers to get around 6 years for murder in Canada. It’s insane. Canada is more concerned with the perpetrator’s rights than with the rights of the victims and the right of the public to live in safety. Canada is super progressive about many things, but, their murder sentencing policies are absolutely insane.
This took place in Vancouver, Washington, not Vancouver, British Columbia.

As a local resident and a member of the Vancouver trans community, never imagined seeing this story being covered. Thank you for your allyship and I hope comments can be preened for respectfulness surrounding this retelling. I'm older than Nikki and never knew her personally, but this story still makes waves and it's important to keep her memory in great spirit. rest in peace and justice 💙🙌🏽

It's fear. People are afraid to go against popular opinion. That's why comment sections are rarely a mixed bag.... it always heavily leans one way. People read the comments & then add their own comment accordingly. Then there's also the fact that everyone will jump down your throat & report u if you disagree.

I think he probably tried to force Nikki to do something she didn't want to do. It's hard to believe she'd just volunteer information that could put her in serious danger. RIP sweet girl.
You have it backwards. It's volunteering the info that keeps them out of danger!!! You don't have sex with someone and THEN tell them you're a bio male. Right or wrong, it can cause someone to freak out because you just made a very big decision FOR THEM. You ask beforehand if they're cool with that! It's scary that you think it would've been crazy for her to tell him. The only crazy thing is to wait until after things happen to be honest about that. Trans people know exactly how dangerous that it and why. That's why it bothers me so much that it's being completely ignored here. That is CAUSING HARM not preventing it!

Is it really victim blaming to point out that she put herself in a very dangerous situation? Meth addiction, possible sex work, getting in a car with a strange man in the middle of the night. Acknowledging the danger of what she was doing, in no way let's the murderer off the hook. He's still solely responsible for her killing.

She didn't deserve that. As far as the mom, she loved her daughter. I will say that you can be a parent and a friend, but don't be their homie. Talk to them without enabling or encouraging bad behaviors.
I think that was probably part of the reason why Nikki moved out. Her mom probably put her foot down. She didn't want that stuff in the house, the shady people knowing where she lives... I get it. Sometimes all you can do is set boundaries but that doesn't mean you don't care or don't love. Seeing a lot of criticism of the mother in the comments, but at 17 she probably had little or no legal recourse to force Nikki to do anything. But she tried .. :(
Nikki needed some serious help. No teenager should have fallen this far, this fast. I would like to have heard if there drug intervention help by the mother school, or others. Why was Nikki allowed to leave school so soon? Was Nikki diagnosed or receiving any mental health help? Horrible situation. Poor kid.

He said her mother tried to get her to get help getting clean, and pushed for rehab, but that she either resisted, or relapsed afterwards - I took "afterwards" to mean that there were occasions when her mother successfully got her to go to rehab, but it didn't work once she was out 💔
Effective intervention when the person doesn't want it is always going to be hard, and I can only begin to imagine how complicated getting good, genuinely effective treatment is when the patient is trans minor female.
Some really professional, well-established eating disorder and PTSD treatment centers that model themselves on drug rehab, dual diagnosis psych units, inpatient SA survivor programs, etc. have a shockingly chaotic patchwork of contradictory policies when it comes to trans patients.

If anyone thinks it's wrong to "call a man a woman" or "call a woman a man", this is for you:
WE'RE NOT USING THE WORDS "MAN" OR "WOMAN" THE WAY YOU THINK. You're thinking of their body anatomy (which is a fact yes, no one's disagreeing) but the rest of us are using the words to refer to how someone feels about themselves, regardless of what they're born with. We say she's a "woman" not because of "her" body but because of how she sees herself. That's how we use the English language today. Yes the word usage has changed.
You're using outdated English and that's why you're misunderstanding everyone. You say "man" but we now use the term "assigned* male at birth". Nobody is lying to you when they say "man" or "woman". If you assume they have certain parts down there based on their appearances (and you misunderstanding the words) then it's your own fault. They're not obligated to tell you what's in their pants. You can ask whether they're "assigned male or female at birth" if you want to, but stop making assumptions.
If you think a "man" or a "woman" should present themselves a certain way (depending on the parts they have down there) then that's your own personal opinion. People will wear what they want or change their bodies whether you like it or not. You're perfectly allowed to treat someone as a man if you know they were assigned male at birth, that's your freedom. But stop using the word "man" incorrectly and don't assume what's in their pants.
*Assigned because sometimes doctors get it wrong. Some people are born with tiny dicks and the doctors decide they're female when they're actually male. They find out when they get a DNA test. Can't assume anything based on appearances.

This one is a really hard listen. The way David just casually slips in his hatred of trans people and how disgusting he thinks lgbtq people are as though that isn't an indictment of his own character and may even be a defense is so infuriating, especially knowing that kind of thing has worked before in defense of murdering someone for being trans. Did she tell him her real age? Did he assume she 21 cuz of all the make up and out and about a 3am? Not being on board with the trans movement doesn’t mean you hate them, just a heads up in case you apply this kind of thinking to everyone.

In the American justice system there is established precedent that says a person is not responsible for murdering a Trans person as long as they claim they were enraged by the fact that the person is Trans. It's called the "trans panic" defense, and it has proven highly effective at getting a number of murderers off the hook, so it seems highly likely that such a defense would apply equally well to attempted murder, possibly even to the point where prosecutors will decline to bring charges, knowing that the perp will just be let off by using the trans panic defense.
I just saw this story for the first time a couple of weeks ago. This is a nice supplement to that.
She definitely should have been honest before they engaged in sex... of course she didn't deserve that but if she was honest first she may be alive.

Nikki's story really hurts. In the really late 90's I had a very close trans girlfriend who dropped out of transition surgery counseling because of drug issues and was having a really hard time. I let her crash on my couch and one day she just left and didn't come back. This was pre socials and I didn't know her dead/ "legal" name so no way to go to the police etc. I really hope Chloe found other help and is doing well somewhere out there. I hope she knows she touched my life and I'll forever care for her. ✌️

It’s a small thing but thank you for treating this case with so much respect. My brother is trans and so many people don’t believe that violence against trans people is real….so thank you so sharing this case and my heart breaks for Nikki and her mother.

If you're trans and intend to become in any way physical with someone, you really should disclose that information beforehand. Never wait until after the fact, as that is dishonest and dangerous
disclosing that you are trans is the #1 way to get yourself murdered, so this is the worst possible advice you could give a trans person.
