Great research and narration, Jiles!!!! Thank you for following this case all the way to the Judge delivering the verdict and imposing sentence to this monster.
Wondering when Samantha realized she was not with the Uber driver she hired makes me cringe and shiver! What is truly perplexing is at what moment did Nathaniel decide to kill her? Kidnapping a college student and expecting huge amounts of cash to be readily available is nonsense..... he may have needed money, but in my opinion, this is not why he killed her.
Kudos to her family for honoring her memory by creating safeguards to the Uber transportation process!!!!

I think the thing that makes me the most angry is he never pled guilty and acted innocent the whole time...... That in itself is worse than anything to me. He did something so terrible and he can't even face it to give some type of closure. Not to mention a mountain of evidence! I'm sure the family feels just as robbed, yea he is in prison but they always have to live with that smugness that he couldn't even tell the truth, that same smugness his ignorant mother also has when she proclaimed her son's innocens, I truly don't understand how some parents are that blind to their children's crimes...Maybe one day he'll be able to be a man and not an animal and admit what he did... But until then he's lower than garbage in my mind.

These stories are so heartbreaking. 35 years ago, my girlfriend’s ex showed up at her house at 2:45am, about 30 minutes after I left. He strangled her and left her in a field out in the woods. She was 17 years old.
Why didn’t I spend the night? Or stay later?
He’s in prison for life with no parole, but I still miss her all this time later. I’ve moved on, happily married with kids, very happy. But there’s an empty spot always present.

As a rideshare driver (female, not that it really matters) who does drive in the evenings - ALWAYS make sure both names are correctly exchanged, it's a 2-way communication. ALWAYS keep your doors locked and a window cracked just enough to talk. I've had people just try to open my doors thinking I'm their driver, apologies get exchanged and we laugh it off, but safety is a 2-way street for both parties. My rule is one of us must confirm a name correctly, and the other must confirm the second name. If I do offer my name first, the other party has to confirm their name with me before they get into my car. I've even had a Kristen (correct rider name on my screen) get into my car only to be looking for a different driver. This horror was easy to prevent which is even more tragic - honor and respect SAMI's law. Drive and ride safe!

LADIES...... ALWAYS verify the Uber Driver by cross-referencing the license plate on your phone, with the license plate on the vehicle AND ASKING THE DRIVER TO verify the NAME he, or she, has, BEFORE YOU GET INTO THE VEHICLE. ALSO, ALONG WITH pepper spray, ALWAYS carry a 'hand-held, mini GLASS BREAKER! If trapped in a vehicle, and the person activates the child lock, you can use the 'mini glass breaker' device to break the glass of the vehicle, to unlock the door from the outside, or at the very least, to SCREAM out the window for help.

In my (Asian) country we use Grab as an equivalent to Uber. They've added a recording function that starts as soon as the car arrives. I believe that was implemented after a few incidents where drivers have been robbed at knife point (we're not allowed to own firearms). Never heard of any passenger endangerment, but I still carry.
