  • Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg were murdered on a trip from British Columbia down to Seattle, Washington. It took authorities 31 years before they solved the case with the help of Genetic Genealogy.

Im an ER nurse right outside Washington, DC. For years I worked alongside a man who set off my inner alarms, even though everyone else seemed to love him. One day he was arrested thanks to genealogy being used by investigators.
Turns out he was stealing ketamine from where we worked, going to the apartment building pools that hire seasonal lifeguards from Eastern Europe, drugging, binding, and violently raping them. He had been doing it for years in several counties before he was caught. While he didn't literally murder anyone, one of his victims testified that she died on that day. He also had a wife and kid at home and was on our ER running team. His name is Jesse Bjerke and he was sentenced to 65 years.
I'm all for genealogy being used to stop these people.

The "we have to wait at least 48 hours before filing a missing persons report," excuse is legit one of the most frustrating things to hear in a true crime story.

It's all over the place. Sometimes it's 24, sometimes it's 48. In this case, it was 72. Either way it's obnoxious to hear in a murder case.

It's actually still used sometimes, and then when the people who are desperately looking to find their missing loved one tells that to a journalist, the police objects and claims that that's simply not true. It's just ALL the people who try to report someone missing who have misunderstood... 🥴🤦

I was talking about this season to my neighbor who then told me her mothers killer was recently found after 31 years. Her mother was brutally stabbed to death. She said they used letters to mark the wounds and had to repeat almost every letter in the alphabet. Turns out, it was her fathers bestfriend, the god-father of her children. He was at the funeral, family home, and had been offering his support the last 30 years, meanwhile he was the one to take her life.

I think that's why it's common practice for police to look at any males in the female victim's life. Whenever a woman is murdered, chances are it's a man who knows her and is regularly in her life.

    • @tbryant8058
      @tbryant8058 11 місяців тому +7

@nothanks9912 yep, they dropped the ball on this one. She was found in an abandoned house, and they assumed she was there buying drugs....early 90s stereotype. They didn't consider that she was Muslim and firmly opposed to any drinking or drug use. The guy killed another woman and confessed for a lighter sentence. It would still be a cold case if not for his confession 30 years later.

The GSK started out as a serial burglar known as the Visalia Ransacker where he attempted to kidnap a teenage girl & wound up killing her father then later attempting to kill the police chief.
He then went on to become a serial rapist then a serial killer. He was WAY more than just a killer. I was on a jury for a domestic abuse and kidnapping trial. The defense was really good in jury selection and asked if there were any victims of domestic or sexual assault in the jury box. Five of us raised our hands. The defense attorney asked me "Do you believe you can be impartial toward the defendant?" I replied that I could. "How can you be sure?" I replied "Because HE wasnt the one who hurt me and this case isnt about me." The silence was stunning.

The fact that they claimed he had sex with Tanya with her permission would have told me he was guilty. Considering she wanted her friend to go with her on the trip so things wouldn't have been awkward, tells me this girl wasn't someone to have casual sex. What about the fact he had the van, but Tanya and Jay were not with him? That's so big, red flag. It wouldn't have taken much more to convince me he was guilty.

Which when you look at the statistics on violent crime is strange but explainable. There's actually far less violent and especially deadly, serious sexual assault crimes being committed now than during the 70s through to the 90s which were the worst years ever on record, especially for serial killers. Partly due to the fact that most are caught far quicker than they were due to DNA and far better contact between forces, far better techniques in collecting evidence, cameras everywhere with software which can match faces, car makes etc from video footage, the resources the police etc have access to like huge databases of fingerprints, DNA and similar cases from the entire country and computers to make the match, and a better understanding of the type of person who would be responsible etc but also the fear of being caught can keep a few who might have crossed the line in earlier years. However the fact society as a whole is more worried about it and parents are more protective of their kids or at least far less likely to let them go out and play and basically go anywhere or at least go places where they aren't being watched is due to the Internet, 24hr news, social media, etc which have all brought such things to our minds far more and made us far more aware of the dangers even if it's a slightly unrealistic fear by comparison to the reality of life and the dangers as they are.

@@kobked-x yhea I'd imagine things exactly like that have had a huge effect on crime rates. Lead from petrol, better water pipes, etc. However the "experts" do say it's very possible we'll get another spike in serial killers, violent crime, etc due to the economic and other social factors being very similar to ones just before the 70s, 80s spike and the effect such factors have on the home lives of kids growing up in households with such stressors etc. I guess that's something we'll have to wait to find out but if it does happen I guess it'd suggest lead pollution and other air pollution isn't as responsible as it could be from looking at the statistics, data, etc. Although a it might also mean is there's a new, different pollution out there which has, effected brain growth in similar ways to lead. I mean it makes sense. It's known a serious head injury can drastically change a person from someone who wouldn't ever even raise their hand to anyone in to someone who is willing to kill or at least now gets so angry he loses control and batters someone to death.
It's brilliant we're, society is trying to understand the reasons and understand but honestly it feels like there's so many different factors, reasons or even what from the outside looks like non which creates killers that I think it'll always be a science that helps us catch them after the fact rather than being able to make a decent guess and get such people help.

Ugh they both seemed like such sweet people especially Jay. He selected such auch a scenic route for them. I don't get why killers don't go for other murderers or child molesters etc. but I'm glad old cases are being solved. Obv there will be cases which might be never solved but solving a case offers a little bit of "relief" for their loved ones at least. I couldn’t live with the uncertainty.

    😳
Dennis Nielsen’s grandfathers death is also cited as playing a pivotal role in his messed up development. .... anyway
This is such a sad sad story. It doesn’t matter how many times I hear it, this one always really gets to me.

Wow, this case has many layers to it, and it was new to me which is always a bonus, but today Jiles you have well outdone yourself, generously! I watched your latest edition of the 'Sinister' series titled, 'The Investor', which I came away from wanting to congratulate you for a brilliant job done and it being a story I was hearing for the first time! What stopped me from posting my comment there was spotting a new episode of 'This is Monsters' had been uploaded in the meantime, just five minutes prior. Maybe it's just me, but I get a kick out of being one of the first few people to view new content so I hit the link! You are to be highly congratulated for the superb content you put out on both channels and the level of consistency indicates how hard you work at it, which is all to the benefit of your followers and viewers. Thank you, well done YOU, and you've found a loyal follower in ME, Jiles! #1 in my book!

Although it might be commendable that he made something good out of himself apparently...some what... it doesn't mean that he gets a pass and should not face justice for killing two people. ❤RIP TANYA AND JAY❤
