When Melissa Walbridge and Meghan O'Rourke decided to cut through the woods on their way home from school, they believed they would be safe in their small Vermont town. That's when Louis Hamlin and Jamie Savage proved them wrong.

It's disgusting that Jamie was tried as a minor and not an adult. And he's out there, completely free, it doesn't feel bad at all and has a false name so no one will know who he is. Some justice system.

@@JeanEDeaux even if both had been given a life sentence w/no parole initially - if I recall correctly -newer legislation would have granted them the chance for parole retroactively since they were under 18 at the time of the crimes. Going to have to look that one up now, can't remember if it applied to juveniles tried as adults.
The law says juveniles cannot be given a life without parole sentencing without extreme circumstances but they can definitely still get life w/o! Same goes for older crimes it is done in a case by case bases and many already incarcerated have tried to change their life w/o but were unsuccessful. Some crimes transcend age! Violent predators very rarely change.

Hi Jiles! Been meaning to ask for a bit but how's life in the new place?
I think if a person is charged with any offense involving attacking/sexual acts it shouldn't matter if the person is a minor or not. That shit should be made known in case of future offenses. So many assaults could've been prevented had this been done.

WOW! I never thought I would see this presented. I'm not going to say a lot because.......... You have most of it and it's correct. Having direct knowledge of Jamie I will say he is quite dull witted. That combined with him being open to criminal suggestibility made him a dangerous dolt. For example he wanted to have a different name other than John Barber but the names he wanted he was never able to spell. And yes like 'all the others' he recounts this story like someone telling their wife about today's fishing trip. The general populace has NO idea of what we have 'captured and put into cages.' Unfortunately many are still out there among us.
Two bizarre families whose homes were not a resource for positive growth and development to say the least helped to make this one happen. "The Death Of Innocence" is a book that covers it well.

I live in Springfield Vermont check out Gary Schaefer involved in the murders of 12-year-olds in this hometown at the same time. I have yet to see him covered on any of these channels!
Juvenile Custody ended at 18 in that state? In California you can keep juveniles until age 25! I know people make fun of my state but in crime, we are VERY serious. Every time abolishing the death penalty comes up for a vote, it gets defeated by a large majority!
Don't listen to the haters! Grew up in SoCal and miss it everyday, although after the 1970s it changed too much for me to stay. Grew up skating and surfing for free and exploring the wilderness playing with King snakes and black widows in between boulders and cacti, trying to pet drying fur seals on a empty beach then getting 25 cent tacos! Sorry just reminiscing. Where you could still be poor and live in a house and there was still a lot of undeveloped land. Thanks for taking me back.

I love how in all these cases the locals always point to the “evil city dwellers” as the source of the problem. It never homegrown evil it’s always people from outside their community who are responsible because their little towns are always the picture perfect representation of “community” and “good Christian values”😂 As if they don’t understand that the more you turn a blind eye to increasingly awful behavior by your neighbors eventually you blindly allow the most heinous of acts to happen. Also, I don’t understand why they weren’t charged as adults. You see two cases that look exactly the same in the same state in the same era but with one case the perpetrators charged as juveniles and the other the perpetrators are charged as adults. I saw a case out of Vermont where a 14 year old shot a man and was charged with 1st degree (premeditated) murder as an adult, but with this they are charged a juveniles? After everything they did?! How does that make sense? Like at all?!
Because monsters dwell everywhere. In the smallest hamlet, or the biggest megalopolis….they hide in PLAIN SIGHT. Lock your doors and teach your kids to FIGHT if someone attacks them. RIP sweet baby.

When he attacked that woman on the train tracks, he definitely should have been sentenced to more than just counseling. Even if that was supposedly his first offense, because of his sealed juvenile record. I hate it when they just keep letting these people, who do such awful things, get away with their crimes right up til they finally mvrder someone then they act surprised. It's like what direction did they think their actions were moving towards?

I’ve lived in Vermont all my life and I’ve never heard of this case before. Monsters! What they did to those poor girls was horrific!!
22:23 Proceedings with an investigation on the basis that the perpetrators were not local doesn’t make sense for an investigation. It sends detectives in the wrong possible direction and limits the entire investigation for no purpose and only makes things more difficult. Especially since it’s not based on any evidence or witness statements. It’s puts solving the crime at a disadvantage.

I usually only cover cases that have been resolved (either with a conviction or with the death of the suspect when there's a lot of evidence), so I'm just waiting for those monster to be convicted.
Why bother with prison or even considering any sort of rehab? Once someone gets to a certain age, teaching them regret or empathy isn't the same as honest feelings. It's a mask.

Most of them don't have parents that care enough to do anything about their children. Might as well let the legal system do something about it and quit sealing the records for repeat offenders. I'm tired of these little criminals like this getting back out on the streets with a slap on the hand so they can escalate their crimes. I hope Megan went on to have a full life. RIP Missy.
