This was filmed around 2015. The German was having a dig about the 2014 World Cup, which the Germans won, beating the hosts Brazil in the semi 7-1, and England was knocked out in the 1st round.

Al's German in this sketch is fairly good. Here in England most of us can't actively speak it this well, but many would understand enough to pick up the gist of what he was saying, particularly as some of it was about then-recent sporting events, or English football songs translated into German.

The last German part is a reference to the film 'Downfall', about the last days in the Führerbunker during the Battle of Berlin. He shouts "Wo ist Steiner? Wo ist Steiner?" Steiner was an SS commander who disobeyed orders to mount an attack, as it would have basically been a suicide mission. When Hitler heard of this, he had a complete meltdown, and later shot himself after realising defeat was inevitable

It was to discuss his new book about the failed British attempt to take the bridge at Arnhem in the second world war. Another super smart comic that you really need to check out is Dara O'Briain. His degree is from Trinity College Dublin where he graduated with Honours in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Here in 'Old Blighty' he's best known as the host of 'Mock The Week' but have a gander at his stand up shows. Like Al Murray he really knows how to play the audience and the way he memorises the names and the occupations of that audience is damned impressive. If you can try his show at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He was brilliant. Give it a go!

There was a film made called The Dam Busters based on a World War 2 raid on the Rhur Valley by the Royal Airforce in Wold War 2.
The bouncing bomb was designed by scientist and engineer Barnes Wallace. Dropped from a height of 60 feet6 on a reservoir it bounced on the surface till it reached the dam wall then it sank and exploded against the dam wall eventually breaching the wall and flooding the valley wiping out industrial factories making weapons for the German War effort. 3 Dan's were attacked 2 destroyed.
The raids were led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson.
He had a black labrador called
Ni@@er. A word not so racially inflammatory in the 1940's as it is now!

I think Brits would automatically laugh at the German parts and get slightly uncomfortable on the New York bit? And I don't think anyone ever asks Japan. I suppose with Germany it can at least be about a shared obsession. My other half is German with Dutch origins, speaks German, Dutch, English, Russian and some French ('some' surprised me) and knows more about what's happening in English football than I do.

Can I make suggestion that you watch an Irish comedian, Dave Allen. His comedy is so funny. You must remember he came from a .rather strict era of Roman Catholicism in Eire (Southern Ireland). He once received death threats from some members of the IRA because of his irreverent humour. 4:20

Wait.. You guys don't speak German ??? We are all taught basic German and French at 11 years old over here.. It's compulsory in High school. Till we're 14 and have to choose our final exam subjects. French, German and/or now Spanish. You don't have to choose a language as a final subject. But at least you've been taught the basics.
