Hey Wiley keep watching your vids and they get better and better. Just remember you're getting on in years but still going never give up until you have too much love my buddy I'm over here in the UK and I'm sure you have many followers over here as well. So up most respect to you and all your kin I'm only 52 but things you do and say I can relate to. Old engineering is the best by far keep those videos coming and I'll keep watching 👍👍
I’ve got a 1948 model cat 12 grader. Pony motor was removed and converted to a 24 volt direct start. Even during the summer months the old D318 requires some ether. When nothing else on the place will start, that ole girl will start and run every single time. Great machines, it’s just takes 10 acres to turn them around 🤣
Thanks for another great video Wiley. It was interesting and enjoyable to watch. Yeah. You got that old grader to start. Wow. Good going Wiley. Those old Cat’s are tough let me tell you. Knuckle busters- - never heard that one before. Good one Wiley!!!!!! That old motor doesn’t sound too awful bad. You never know, someone might be interested in that old machine. Wow. You did good Wiley. Got her running-yeah!!!!!! Thanks dear friend Wiley. Good job The Iowa farm boy. Steve 😊😊🇺🇸🇺🇸
I guessed it got the nick name from when folks engaged those levers and it slap around like that, their hand would sometimes slip and hit the windshield My thoughts only
My Father operated a open air knuckle buster Caterpillar 12 grader in the 60’s and 70’s, sometimes he would let me ride on it with him and remember how his arms got a workout on those controls, those were some good times and some good memories 😊
That is a 12 F, 80C. The first direct start as a standard option. You could get electric start as an option on a 12 8T 1955 up. Engine D318. I believe 1962 to 1964
I believe that’s a 12 grader. Look like a 12 foot blade on it. Where I worked they had 2 12 foot graders a 14 foot and a 24 foot grader. I think that’s how you tell what size they are. Great video. Thanks for sharing and have a great week, Wily!!
Yesterday, 7 years ago; she don’t care. She’s just been standing by till someone came to put her back to work. You didnt’t have no trouble wakin her up. She’ll be a mover and a shaker. Mind your knuckles! 🥸👍👀👋✅
Sure do miss you and Hank doing videos, your interaction, and your instruction. Watching from New Harmony area, north of DeFuniak Springs, Florida & south of Paxton.
Thanks Wiley, all the way from New Zealand. A company I worked for 50 years ago had a Cat like that. I remember I was always scared of the controls 🤣 oh and it was old back then. Only difference was it was a pony start, or as we say here, a donkey start. Lots of memories.
Excellent video Wiley :) also remember those a Independent Heavy Duty Equipment Business guy in my areas had one year's ago also I remember Roads & Works Department Highway Patrol company near my home use them and had Umbrella up top for keeping Sunshine cook you up also stay cool ! That was 1980's to 1995 when say both them in action! Roads did ditches and gravel lane on roads clean up!
I repeat my self sometimes Wiley so you’re not alone on that. We had a grader just like that on our race track years ago. Man that brings back some good memories.
I called them a wrist rattler, I used to go home with sore hands. The worst two levers to operate were the circle turn and the wheel lean.🤕 it was an old 12E grader my father used to operate on the local council. I drove it after he retired in 1988. It had bald tires and the clutch would slip and the right hand blade lift clutch pack would ride up sometimes. But I loved it my dad did too.
I really liked that white Pete bud I think you should do sum videos on them fixing the truck they need parts 4 hell I'd like to see them get the white pete back to it formal condition
The only hydraulics on that machine will be for the power steering. All the controls are worked by dog clutches in the control box. They can really kick if they are worn when you are putting weight on the mouldboard. You hang on tight to those levers when using the controls and push them firmly. Don't try to ease them in or they will kick you..
The gear pump is run off a driveline that runs off of the flywheel and runs continuously The pump is internal and operates the power steering and possibly the pitch on your blade whether to pack or to cut. Another option was to extend your blade out. I do believe it is the 80C model 12 F.
Hello wily how come things can’t be as simple as they were yesterday Things were so much easier and simple technology hogwash loved the video thank you ken
Dealing with wasp it’s cheap and simple. Dollar Tree spray bottle with 1/3 dishwashing liquid to 2/3 water. Spray rapidly but the trick of this is DON’T run. They might fly around you but will seldom sting something that is not moving 👍👍👍
Thanks For sharing that Billy I always thought it was called knuckle busters because your hand may come off the lever while you were engaging it and hit the window
The old Cat grades will pull start, just turn on the compression after it's rolling a bit and let out the clutch. Oh and the engine drives the controls directly. Outer shaft drives the clutch , the inner shaft drives the controls. Controls always work when engine running.
Nothing wrong with Harbor Fright tools. They are not Snap-On, but will get the job done. I suggest a cover for that compressor to keep out of the rain, making it easier in it's latter life to start and run.
Ive watched a many old galion and cat graders years ago , work country and mountain roads , and guys that didnt need strings to put a parking lot level for paving . I watched a guy a couple days ago pulling ditch , he was cutting the berm away from the road and pushing it against the hill side - no berm on the edge of the pavement , a state highway route , another 5 minute wonder .......
Hey friend just looking out when you're dealing with batteries please put some safety glasses on I had AD blow up hit the wall of the ceiling I'm just saying
I am glad people are interested getting old school equipment running a legend never dies hearing old disels running is music to my ears 😊

the oil level in those engines is usually checked while the engine is running. If it is checked with the motor stopped it will appear to be over full.
