I'm not gonna lie Heidi, I was having a pitty party for myself thinking I'll never have a freeze dryer like "everyone" else I watch on UA-cam. I do however have a very nice dehydrator, thanks be to God. Now because of you, sharing your experience and experiments I'm looking at it as the blessing it is and am using it like never before in ways I never thought possible... thinking oh I need a freeze dryer for that! Not anymore! So grateful the Lord led me to your channel, to Him be the glory! Bless you, Patrick and your family💜 Thank you for your helpful, informative useful content!
I am so glad! This is one of the many reasons I decided it was not for me because so many just cannot afford it and when you realize that dehydrating foods, including meats, is the oldest and most common way of putting up food, it just makes sense. Freeze drying is the newest form of food preservation and is totally unnecessary. While some freeze dried foods are nice for certain things, I consider those a luxury, not a nessecity.

We'll have enough for a big soup to last 4 days for 6 months. It's a major milestone for me! It took about 2 1/2 months. After that I'll just see how much more I can do before the wood stove isn't running all the time. BIG THANK YOU for showing how to vacuum seal jars. I still want to dry more meat, but I had been slowly building a store of canned beef from the store for now. You've helped change our lives for the better. This is a much better system than anything we had going before. Thank you.

My experiment dehydrating home canned grape juice failed, sort of. Three quarts of juice made a very gummy fruit leather. I ended up simmering it with a cup of water; converting it into just over a pint of concentrate. Not a total loss, but lesson learned. My favorite thing to dehydrate is definitely ground meat (beef and venison, mainly). I heat water to boiling, pour some dehydrated burger into it, cover and let sit about 10 minutes. Drain some of the water, add taco seasoning and use for tacos, chips and cheese, burritos, etc. If I am using it in a recipe (chili, goulash, etc) I add some water, toss the burger and spices in and cook for a few minutes before proceeding with the recipe.
I tried the juice thing too with the same results. I just added it to some fresh cranberries and cooked it to make a cranberry sauce. It turned out pretty good :)
Good morning Heidi. Excellent video as always. Thanks again for sharing all your tips regarding what to use for the healing process - as opposed to OTC medications and prescription drugs with side effects.

I love my dehydrator! It's old and I had it tucked away, but this past year I dehydrated everything we didn't eat fresh from the garden so it wouldn't go to waste. I used to can it all. I love the idea of powders so I didn't want to can any of it and try making powders instead. Some of us cannot afford a freeze dryer. I feel lucky to have a dehydrator, and I just bought my daughter one for Christmas. Why it took me so long to use it? I have no clue, but glad I am now! I will have to watch your video on dehydrating eggs as I just froze some
I am freeze drying. Do not have a dehydration, yet. Only been doing drying just over 6 montgs. Learning what works and what doesn't. Fruits can be very difficult, the sugar makes the process fail at times. Bananas are awesome but thin slices work best. Vegetables are fairly easy. Be sure to blanch required vegetables as you woukd for freezing. I also powder most of my vegetables. Saves space and works out great in cooking or just topping on the food just before eating. Tomato, onion, garlic, etc all raw when freeze dried and taste exactly that on your pasta, salad, or added to soup after cooking is done. Dairy, love freeze dried yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, cheese. Only just cooked chicked and ground beef so far in freeze dryer. It is work. It's also fun to have jars of produce, meat, and dairy to choise from in your pantry. Have fun, jyst try it. You too will be hooked.

Question if you can help: I made ghee and forgot to tighten the lids while they cooled so they didn't seal as they normally do. Do the lids need to be sealed to be shelf stable? I have always kept my ghee on the shelf with no problem, with self-sealed lids (as they cooled). Will vacuum sealing do the same thing? Thanks.
I am not a huge fan of ghee so I have only made it once. I would assume though since it is only the butter fat without the milk solids, it should have a decent shelf life if vacuum sealed but please do not take my word for it. I suggest you ask someone who routinely cans ghee for long term storage
Am i correct that most pressure canned goods can be dehydrated instead? I'm looking to avoid pressure canning. Already stream can. Space doesn't really allow more gadgets.
I'm just starting dehydrating.. Mostly squash and tomatoes. However, I've also powdered kale as a for instance. So this begs the question. How much powdered kale would be in a Tablespoon.. or a teaspoon? This is the part that confuses me. I can guess pretty well with the chips.
I keep struggling with the dehydrated and powdered cheese, my husband says the cheese it gritty. I tried adding water and a little butter and milk to make cheese raise but so far no luck…😫
I find it best when adding to things I am going to cook rather than just trying to soak it. So it is great for making cheese sauce or adding straight to raw scrambled eggs before cooking them or added to any other kind of sauce I am making that I want to have some cheesiness to it
I like to dehydrate watermelon slices. Then you can eat the slices like candy. There's only one problem. My wife likes them so much that she will eat them faster than I can dehydrate them, so I've taken to dehydrating watermelon together with other things (she doesn't know watermelon is on some trays) so I have a chance to actually create a stock lol :)
Heidi, I was wondering what you would recommend for a post surgical patient with a foot fracture to heal? Are there any certain herbs or whatever that would help the healing process?
I know I answered this but now I am not seeing my comment. Weird! Ok, I will start over: I recommend comfrey and arnica soaks or poultice. Both of these herbs are excellent to speed healing to sprains, bruises, and even fractures. Comfrey can also be taking internally in the form of a tea though I only recommend on cup per day. Other herbal teas or capsules to consider would be turmeric, moringa, nettle, horsetail, and mullein
@@RainCountryHomestead I am gonna play stupid for a second because sometimes having partial knowledge is worse than being stupid but, how would I consume them and where would I get them? I have some mullein from my girlfriend. Nettle too. Tumeric I have in a powder as a spice. (I am a spice addict...lol)
@Robin's Nest u could make a tea to drink or put the herbs in a foot soak. A quote from Dr. Patrick Jones that I like is it doesn't really matter how u get the herbs in as long as u do. I hope that helps. Good luck and prayers for a complete recovery.
Too much for you maybe but it is called teaching and being thorough for those who need all that information. At least it cost you nothing yet you still feel the need to complain about the free side dish that others like but you did not. Maybe consider the needs of others and not be so ungrateful?

Heidi your channel is such a blessing. I'm learning as I watch your videos. I appreciate the time you take to research and give us different strategies to preserve our food. Heidi I am extremely new at this whole food preservation and wanted to ask have you dehydrated kefir whey?
No, I have not but am certain it would work
Amen!
Lordy my mind is reeling
Heidi I’m so interested in your videos and I think I’ve watched every video that you have made and sometimes two or three times or more ,but I don’t remember or can find the one where you make dehydrated cheddar cheese I bought some silicone sheets, thanks to you ,cause I now want to try making dehydrated milk I would be interested in doing that to make a base for making cream of something soup I made that but the dry milk here in Canada is so expensive so I’d like to try making my own!! Thank you
Here is the video for the cheddar powder: ua-cam.com/video/WlZZILLBHpE/v-deo.html
and here is a video on how to search for videos on any channel so you will always know: ua-cam.com/video/I_jM9HHF1PI/v-deo.html
Absolutely ❤️ your videos!!!!!
What's your opinion on mylar bags vs jars?
I have mylar and have used it but am not a fan of it for anything but using in large buckets with my grains. I talk more on that here: ua-cam.com/video/7g2LGUw49X0/v-deo.html
I'm gonna try left over baked potatoes to make potatoe powder.
Such great information! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Happy New Year 😊
Ug I used dehydrated peppers in my Hawaiian chicken tonight in the crock pot and they NEVER reconstitute well. And all my carrots go rancid. Believe me….they are dry to the bone so that’s not the problem. I don’t have much luck…my favs are bananas and apples.
I am not crazy about dried bell peppers and if your carrots were still warm when you sealed them up, it could have caused sweating in the jar
Good morning.
I dehydrated scrambled eggs.
I tried to rehydrate with hot water, room temperature water for 5 days. They still felt like rubber gummies. Yuck!
What went wrong?
Were they precooked before dehydrating? Had you powdered them?
Have you dehydrated olives? Also wondering about tomato paste, as then it would be like your tomato flakes. Thx.
I have yet to try olives and I never buy or make tomato paste because the dried tomato flakes are enough to thicken a sauce. You simply add more water.
Heidi sorry to bother you but I want to dehydrate eggs and milk as I have never done it and you have giving us such great ideas I’m so impressed ,but for the eggs I don’t have a farm so can I just use store bought eggs like I have been eating? And milk can I just use the homo ,or 2% or 1% or skim from the store?
Yes, store bought is fine but as far as the milk, whole milk is FAR better than any low fat milk. It will taste better and is better for you.
You are the best thank you!
Is your orange powder only made from the peels? Like orange zest?
The orange powder I made for the baby is only the fruit but the orange powder I use for everything else is only the peel: ua-cam.com/video/y_nykxfVVGE/v-deo.html
I would like to dehydrate the frijoles, lentils or chili that I make for a meal. I usually cook up a very large pot and have maybe a qt or two left after we eat. Would it be a problem to take what's left and dehydrate it? I don't have a freeze dryer.
I have yet to try it but I am sure you can. I know people who will cook beans then dehydrate them so the cook up faster than just raw dry beans would
What about dehydrating black olives?

@@RainCountryHomestead Thanks. I'll check around.
Am i correct that most pressure canned goods can be dehydrated instead? I'm looking to avoid pressure canning. Already stream can. Space doesn't really allow more gadgets.
Yep, you can dehydrate pretty much anything
Any thoughts on dehydrating in a bbq grill?
It might work fine for meat if set on the lowest setting and on a hanging warming rack if the BBQ has one
I'm just starting dehydrating.. Mostly squash and tomatoes. However, I've also powdered kale as a for instance. So this begs the question. How much powdered kale would be in a Tablespoon.. or a teaspoon? This is the part that confuses me. I can guess pretty well with the chips.
I have never taken the time to figure that out, especially since I mix all those greens together anyway
Weird! Ok, I will start over:
I recommend comfrey and arnica soaks or poultice.
Comfrey has the ability to absorb through the skin and get into the bone. Heidi has great advice.
Also remember to never take arnica internally. Best wishes!
Talk way too much. Off point too much. Wasted time.
Too much for you maybe but it is called teaching and being thorough for those who need all that information. At least it cost you nothing yet you still feel the need to complain about the free side dish that others like but you did not. Maybe consider the needs of others and not be so ungrateful?
Not correct. Try to do any of the things she just taught and you will need every word. Be kind.
