So I actually just finished testing and lubing a whole set. If you want to get rid of the high pitched clack, heres a few things. Thick lube like Krytox 205g0, but make sure to also put some on the top housing, where the stem hits the top housing. This absolutely helped tone down the switch and make it more thocky. Also - if you're a heavy typist who prefers thock, this might not be for you. When i really hit the keys hard, the pitch is clacky, but when i type normally or softly, it sound deep.
Thanks for the in-depth review. I've recently gotten into the keyboard rabbit hole out of nowhere a few days ago and I'm thoroughly enjoying watching your videos and learning :) keep it up
Your way of switching positions to account for different sound in different positions are amazing, keep it up! Your content and insight is already amazing, thanks for doing this for us all
I loved the smoothness and springs of this switch but hated the sound so I did some swapping and made two great switches. I threw the CJ stems into an Ink V2 housings which was super smooth and sounded great, and then put Durock POM stems (sold by themselves from Prevail) into the stemless CJ's which gave them a much better sound signature.
These sounds mighty fine and might have to check them out. My favorite switch of all is still the aqua kings, but if I find anything better than that, then it's a celebration.
Hey Scott, thanks for the heads-up on these switches. My gf doesn't let me use anything other than silent liners, but some of these are definitely going in my day-board. Great sound. I always appreciate your stem wobble and chart comparisons.
You're absolutely welcome Dinno! They are great switches even stock! The lube doesn't make them necessarily smoother, but it does help change the sound profile! These are just so smooth stock... With no lube at all on it... It's crazy
I was originally planning to use the new box ink blacks for my upcoming mr suit build, but this review has convinced me to give these new CJs a shot. Great in-depth analysis! :)
I was so confused between the Box Black Inks and the CJs for the QK75. This video pushed me towards the CJs. Thanks so much Scott for this in-depth review.
I’m going insane thinking about what switches I should get for my keyboard…I wanted creams because I’m willing to break them in, and I like the sound. The Giant V5s and Durock POM switches were also what I was looking for. I think I’m going to get these though. Great video!
Idk if you bought them yet or not, but go with the CJ's 100%. Lubed CJ's (without needing to break them in) sound deeper than my broken in, filmed, and lubed creams.
Very interesting! I just checked ThereminGoat's ratings, and he gave the CJs a 73. I believe he does all the reviews stock, and I was surprised based on your video that the CJ didn't score a bit better out of the box given how dependent some other switches are on lube/film. (for comparison, the Alpaca V2 = 87, Everglide V3=86, and both box ink black/pink =76, and the budget king Gat yellow (KS-8) he gave 72) Just really goes to show how much of the hobby is personal preference.
Yeah a lot of personal preference in this hobby for sure! Like for example, sound is so subjective and if you prefer deep vs clacky etc. I'll have to check out his review also!
I guess the Alpacas are highly rated because of their consistent performance across various boards, I tried the CJ on an IRON165 and Volcano660 it almost sounds like a silent switch.. When I tried it on the kbd67 lite it sounded, very muted compared to the ink blacks. When I tried it on an Alpine65, the CJs sound good. it's kinda overly 'board dependent' imo
Just got one of these from a switch sample pack and I really like it! Durock POMs were my favorite linear for a while, but since these are cheaper I might give these a try as well. Will most likely just use em stock or maybe lube the spring if needed
In my opinion, the two switch tests need to be back to back with one another in order to really be able to tell a difference. For me, hearing two switches of A, then one switch of B followed by two switches of B has too much variance in-between in order for my ear to really compare them. Does that make sense?
bro you are my savior!!!!! i randomly clicked on your video when it had the titel (better than inks) man the gateron CJ are the switches im getting for myself 100%
Scott you were right, I don't know how your testing is so accurate but it is. I just go the tangerines to see how they compared to my CJ's and gatto say the CJ is way better.
Honestly, I went into this thinking... Another linear switch. How different can these be really? Then I pressed the first one and thought... What... Why are these so smooth? They're really good switches for sure!
I'm very new to this hobby (only having started this summer) and I started off with a board that has the OG NK Creams even though I've heard a lot of questionable things about them. I love the look of the creams more than any other switch IMHO. I did realize that it did feel a bit scratchy, even with lube and me being a newcomer to the hobby, but after a while the breaking in process really did a lot (they're super smooth). Thanks for the amazing review.

by far my biggest internal qustion after trying cjs myself is what if one were to use their housings with cherry silent stems to make the smoothest silent switches

The CJ switches sound like an amazing option. I'm excited to try them out. Is there a difference between the CJ Box and the regular? Also, would you have any recommendations for a silent switch that has about the weight and feel of a Gateron Pro Yellow (factory lubed)? I'm finding the Cherry MX Silent Reds are a bit too light. I'm looking into the Alpaca Silent, but availability on that switch is very hit and miss. I love how in-depth and organized all your videos are, and the cute skits, too! Thank you for the informative content you provide us viewers! :)
Thanks for the great video! Love the Deckard Cain intro! Makes me reminisce about my D2 days.... How are these so smooth stock? Are they pre-lubed? You definitely made me curious to see if they will dethrone my favorite linears: the Everglide Aqua Kings. I've also seen some reviews on the Prevail Epsilons that seem pretty amazing too. Are we really living in a world where you no longer need to lube linear switches??
Haha, yeah I started playing a bit of the remastered, so I was quickly thrown back into this throw-back. The crazy thing about the CJs is that they come bone dry. No lube at all, and they are still crazy smooth. Not sure how it's done since I figured POM/POM interaction will be leathery like the NK creams, but not here. Lubing doesn't increase the smoothness too much more, rather it makes the switch deeper instead! I ordered some new aqua kings to check out and compare! I tried one of the earlier aqua kings and they had the worst application of lube unfortunately
@@Keybored Definitely looking forward to your review of the new Aqua Kings. I got mine a couple months ago and have had 0 issues with them. It seems no reviewers has gone to try them again after the initial issues with them sticking but all of the 80 switches I got worked perfectly so hopefully this means they've got everything figured out. Also, really love the 2 keys sound test. It's much more helpful to get an idea of the sound of the switch. I opted NOT to play remastered because it will just be a huge time vacuum... One thing I really like about the new gateron switches? The spring weight… the gateron CJ and gateron X are both really nice weight! Also yes they are really smooth and good! I liked mine so much I kept one set stock and have a second that is lubed and filmed 🥰🥰🔥🔥😋😋
I have CJ and Epsilons...so smoooove Update: Gateron CJs have become my favorite. They're quite loud compared to Red Jackets, Tangerines, Gat Oil Kings, Epsilons, and Gat Milky Yellow. Sir, how did you lube your CJ switches? Is it the same as the tutorial you made on how to lube linear switches? I also bought CJ switches because of your nice review of Gateron CJ.
Damn Scott. You hella got me with the Diablo skit!! But better than inks?! Those some fighting words...haha. But I'm excited to watch this video. You'd be the one to change my mind.
I made Creamerons previously and although they were cool, I preferred the black inks overall still. This sounds like it improved on that frankenswitch. Dang too bad too, I had a bunch of black inks left over so I used them for my Mode Sixtyfive but after watching this I kind of want to switch to the CJ's.
imagine this getting popular, like gat yellow/black popular then they improve it further. there might come a day where we won't need switch films anymore because every switch is so smooth out of the box.
I wish there was a tactile version of these, they sound so good! They wouldn't be as smooth but 90% of this smoothness is probably a mile ahead of tactiles available.
Great review as always, though I would submit that cost is not the only truly objective criterion in your list. Stem wobble, smoothness, sound (volume), and pitch are likewise capable of empirical, objective measurement; however, most of us don't have the equipment to quantify these.
Was going to buy tangies but you convinced me I need to try these. They look alot like the akko cs ocean blue switch just on the appearance was my first impression
I’m doing a mechanical keyboard build, and thinking what switches I should use, would you reccommend Akko yellow cream v3 or china joys, (I’m willing to lube them)
yes sirr!! i really agree with u 💪🏻 if u want to hear my simple cj review kindly check out my youtube channel. thank you so much keybored for the inspiration 😍
They have even more stability, especially when bottoming out. The long springs provide stronger rebouncing force like the ttc gold pinks, and the long stems function just like the nk cream and Durock pom's, more condensed typing experinece and bottoming out pitch. Defenitly worth trying out imo.
I'm really new to Mechanical Keyboards as a hobby. I've always loved the feel when using them but I just ordered my first keyboard with a hot swappable PCB, new keycap sets, etc. So far, Cherry MX Blues have been my absolute favorites and the new keyboard I have on the way has Gateron Blue's, so I have high hopes. Can anyone tell me how these Gateron CJ's might compare to the Cherry MX Blues or Gateron Blues? The sound test + switch performance comparison's in this video have me really intrigued! Also great content, I'll definitely be coming back for more :D
Blues are a tactile, very clicky, switch. As you press down on the key, you can feel and hear the actuation of the switch quite a bit. These switches are linear switches, which means that they lack the feel and audible actuation. The sound you get from these switches comes from the bottoming out and topping off of the switch being pressed and released. You could say that the feel of the CJs vs Blues are polar opposites. I would highly recommend you try out as many switches as you can as each one has their own feel, sound, and characteristics. With a hot swap PCB, you can throw a few in your board to get a good feel for how well you take to them. Good luck!
Great video as always Keybored! I remember seeing another review of the Gateron CJ switches a little while back and the reviewer said that the switches were not as smooth after opening the switch. Did you experience this at all?
@@Keybored Thanks for the response. I also thought it was a strange phenomenon. If you ever want to look more into it, this was the review that I saw. ua-cam.com/video/a5Y6sVxZGdM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BontaBoards
Got these based off the review and your right they are fantastic they are by far my favorite linear switch now. I was expecting to have to spring swap them as I find 60g springs too light but surprisingly these don't feel nearly as light as my other 60g switches despite most places listing them as 60g. I am real happy about this but I wonder why the springs feel like this.
Thank you for all the effort you put into your content! I am stuck between the CJ and Golden Cap v2 switches. Is there one you would choose over the other? I've been using non-pro, L&F Gateron milky yellows for the last year or so. If it helps, my current daily is a modded Keychron Q1 and my secondary is a KBD 67 Lite R3. Thanks!
I am stuck between the CJ and Cap v2 too, but I think I have highly chance to go with CJ since it is smoother, the springs are from ink pink, which are slightly lighter than my ink black v2, so I can better predict the feeling.
I've seen another video where they claim that opening these switches and re-assembling them together changes the overall feel of the switch and makes it not as smooth as it was as stock- would you believe this to be true with your experience with this switch? (these switches are on the way for me and are not in hand but I feel that opening them and lubing them with 205g0 would be making them smooth anyways and those previous claims would be false, but who knows will definitely find out!)
@@FallenKat damn, after opening and lubing it still feels scratchier than stock? thats tough.. I might try lubing one switch and comparing them when I get mine in soon (think tomorrow!!)
I just finished lubing a set but I haven't experienced what you're talking about. I'm guessing if the housing was slightly damaged during disassembly/assembly process, it could happen but if you have a proper switch opener and is careful, it shouldn't happen to you. I think lubing it did make it ever so slightly smoother but it definitely improved the sound.
Hmmm... I don't know how that will happen honestly. If you look at the mechanics of the switch, most of the "sliding" happens between the lower housing sliders and the stem, so regardless of the top being removed, it wouldn't make it any less smoother. I opened all of mine up and have no issues!
@@Keybored I agree, I opened my switches and felt that there wasnt anything to worry about reduced smoothness with or without lubing (they sound amazing in the mr suit as well)
Hey man, this switch review is pretty good! I really am interested in this switch, especially how it would feel if I lube it myself vs. stock form. I have a quick question: how would you rate this switch vs. the new Gateron X polished switches?
From what I saw, the X switches are just polished versions of the original yellows. I remember seeing the other reviewers saying that it's smooth, but Tangerines are actually smoother. In that situation, these CJs will blow those out of the water, since CJs are smoother than tangerines.
@@Keybored Thanks! I’ll see if I can grab some then! Oh, and quick side question if you don’t mind: would you recommend lubing and filming the TTC Gold Pinks or just run them stock? I have some but I find them actually kinda scratchy myself… though they’re pretty decent stock compared to most common MX switches.
@@matasa7463 apparently if you open it and close a Gateron CJ, for some reason it doesn't become as smooth, and you have to lube it to get back the smoothness. I guess only lube your CJ's if you prefer to the lubed switch sound. The lube apparently won't make the switches more smooth than it already is since the stem rails are polished. Watch the below video for reference: ua-cam.com/video/a5Y6sVxZGdM/v-deo.html
I was going to use Divinikey for building a new keyboard but sadly they wouldn't ship to UK at first and then wanted over $45 to ship some springs to the UK so was very sad.

There are many new switches that work in north facing with Cherry! Gateron yellow SMD, most long pole stem switches, the Box Inks, Akko switches, etc!
Blacks are still a winner for me... CJ's feel a bit better but the lower acoustics with a tiny bit of scratch is actually more pleasing to me.
:) All about that preference! No right or wrong!
Sir, how did you lube your CJ switches? Is it the same as the tutorial you made on how to lube linear switches? I also bought CJ switches because of your nice review of Gateron CJ.
Yup! I lube them the same way with Krytox 205!
@@Keybored thank you sir❤️
Damn Scott. You hella got me with the Diablo skit!! But better than inks?! Those some fighting words...haha. But I'm excited to watch this video. You'd be the one to change my mind.
Haha, I love inks too! But for me, these just feel more refined :) And Diablo is the best!
Love the d2 reference :)
The CJs are great switches. They are such a clean feel switch :)
imagine this getting popular, like gat yellow/black popular then they improve it further.
there might come a day where we won't need switch films anymore because every switch is so smooth out of the box.
I honestly think we're almost there! So many new switches I have tried are so nice out of the box! If they just used nicer lube, then it'll be set!
OMG DECKARD CAIN!!! the memories XD
wow these are really nice I was expecting them to sound really clicky like cherry MX blues
These are smooth smooth linears! I really do enjoy using these
Didn’t take you as a D2 player. What a legend
:) I used to play too much D2!
@@Keybored Have you played any of the D2R yet? Or have you not touched the game since ages ago?
That's pretty cool, never tried these myself!
:) They're apparently very new! Gateron launched these late September?
Damn! Gateron going all out!
They've been killing it!
Speaking of box inks, I ordered nk mystery switches and got 90 kangaroo inks. I'm hyped.
:) congrats! great luck!
I wish there was a tactile version of these, they sound so good! They wouldn't be as smooth but 90% of this smoothness is probably a mile ahead of tactiles available.
I know they have a box linear, I hope they consider the tactile as well! But I have their oil kings right now for testing... Gateron is killling it!
@@Keybored do you have any sort of timeline for the oil king review?
@@jacobstern4630 2 weeks!
@@Keybored great! I'll be waiting ;)
Great review as always, though I would submit that cost is not the only truly objective criterion in your list. Stem wobble, smoothness, sound (volume), and pitch are likewise capable of empirical, objective measurement; however, most of us don't have the equipment to quantify these.
That is very true! One day haha
These remind me of the blue from an EM1 Civic Si
Was going to buy tangies but you convinced me I need to try these. They look alot like the akko cs ocean blue switch just on the appearance was my first impression
They are very very blue haha. But these are great switches and feel very refined
Yoo was waiting this rewive since you could out these on discord banger revive
:) Hope the review is helpful!
That chart is great!
Thank you so much!
I’m doing a mechanical keyboard build, and thinking what switches I should use, would you reccommend Akko yellow cream v3 or china joys, (I’m willing to lube them)
i bought it because of this video.. and i'm not regretting my choice. it's better than tangies
It's so smooth and so clean! I really love how clean they feel
yes sirr!! i really agree with u 💪🏻 if u want to hear my simple cj review kindly check out my youtube channel. thank you so much keybored for the inspiration 😍
You had me with Deckard Cain
He's the true hero
I just bought 7 packs of gateron cj today, they better be good
I like them :)
@@Keybored ok, still waiting for mine to arrive
Pom is also known as acetal and delrin. Yes its smooth. Its a very low friction plastic
Very smooth indeed!
There's also a box stem wall variant of CJ switches, they come with longer springs and stems.
They have even more stability, especially when bottoming out. The long springs provide stronger rebouncing force like the ttc gold pinks, and the long stems function just like the nk cream and Durock pom's, more condensed typing experinece and bottoming out pitch. Defenitly worth trying out imo.
That's great to know! Thanks for the information, I appreciate it!
If you put your ear next to the speaker at the sound test it just sounds exactly like popcorn
Haha it does!
Smoother stock than lubed and filmed tangerines is 🤯
It's wild!
Perfect ! Just copped 100 of these
I have too many of these already haha... Lubing switches give me nightmares
@@Keybored Aaaarg!! Dont remind me of me having to lube all of them
Thanks for the review. Just bought these after seen this video. What's your favorite switches nowadays? Thanks!
Kinda seems like you used different keycaps after seeing what happened to Shoobs' Z key on his 8008 set LOL
Haha yup!
What a review ! Btw thats one hell of a GREEN keybored ! Pls do share a link...Greeeeeeen is my fav !
Haha, it's the portico keyboard in terminal green! I posted the link in the description, check it out! :)
Just don’t use blues
That is odd. Opening the switches wouldn't change anything imo. I didn't experience that at all!
@@Keybored Thanks for the response. I also thought it was a strange phenomenon. If you ever want to look more into it, this was the review that I saw. ua-cam.com/video/a5Y6sVxZGdM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BontaBoards
Do you recommend lubing and filming these? Or leave them stock? Was also wondering if they work with 0.3mm films. Great vid!
If you have the ability to, I would lube them.
I would lube them to lower the sound a bit, but I wouldn't film. I tried filming it with TX .125mm and it was too tight
Try rose red
I need that shelf that you put all your switches in
Ikea! Skadis!
@@Keybored Thank you
For a moment I thought this was the Akko CS Ocean Blue switches. They look pretty close.
Haha, yeah these switches are all starting to look very similar! For example, the akko jelly black and the ink blacks
Great video keep it up!
Thank you Edison!
love that intro, amazing
Thank you so much! Diablo!
Gotta throw things at you for the declared Cain thing
Hahahaha! I started playing remastered so I was quickly reminded of that Horadric cube... Gave me ideas
Super nice review! I wonder if the boxed version would actually sound and feel the same with this version of cj? Thanks for this mam! :)
This review was enough for me to buy those bad boys as Christmas gift.
:) Put them into a nice board and you're golden!
Thanks!
I am stuck between the CJ and Cap v2 too, but I think I have highly chance to go with CJ since it is smoother, the springs are from ink pink, which are slightly lighter than my ink black v2, so I can better predict the feeling.
you should compare them with the gateron yellow cap v2 imo, great video btw
Thank you so much! These are actually even tighter housing and much much smoother! The Cap V2s do have a poppy deeper sound
yo hold up, are those pewters on the top right container on your wall? i am very proud right now.
Please try add more comparison with epsilon, banana split, akko matcha green, akko jelly black, alpaca v2, and zaku
You've gotta get your hands on the aquaking everglides. They're still my favorite linear.
I have the v3s :)
@@Keybored are they good, how do they compare to the cj's, box ink blacks and the oil kings
Hi, your switches look so well organized! Where did you get the Organizer from 1:00 from?
Ikea skadis!
This also happened to me, the Switch that I opened feels more scratchy then stock.
@@Keybored I agree, I opened my switches and felt that there wasnt anything to worry about reduced smoothness with or without lubing (they sound amazing in the mr suit as well)
I really don't like the color. Hopefully it will get recolor ones! Love your videos as always!!
HAIL TO YOU, CHAMPION
Such a great game!
Watch the below video for reference:
ua-cam.com/video/a5Y6sVxZGdM/v-deo.html
Yoooo CJs!!! Been thinking about these. Might actually consider buying them 🤔
The CJs are great! You won't regret it
I wonder how the light blue and dark blue CJs compare since they're both the same price
I was going to use Divinikey for building a new keyboard but sadly they wouldn't ship to UK at first and then wanted over $45 to ship some springs to the UK so was very sad.
:( Sorry to hear that!
these seem great, gonna cop some for my new build now instead of alpacas, thanks!
:) I don't do as many switch reviews unless I feel that switch brought enough to the table to deserve a review haha. These definitely deserved one!
