  • I have these 5 dwarf Japanese flowering quince - Chojubai - ready for initial styling. I don’t know a huge amount about the species but these were needing to be worked on and styled. The same principles can be applied to other similar type trees at the same stage of growth.

Try paying close attention to the angle of the buds when trimming, these trees crow in a quite contorted manner and don’t really need wire. Trim so the next branch is heading in the direction you want and you will not need wire. If the next branch angle is incorrect you’ll end up have to compensate further with wire later. Chojubai are ideal for cut and grow. They look amazing as the ramification increases. I love these trees.

I just got my first chaenomeles too! 5 diff cultivars - iwai nishiki, contorted salmon pink, o yashima, kan toyo, toyo nishiki.
I’m excited to try them out. Hope they do okay in dry hot SoCal 10b.
Wondering how to prune them for ramification/bifurcation... they seem naturally leggy/lanky.

Hi, I have noticed that this post was done about 4 years ago but I also wondered if you are still looking at the comments today. I have been looking for some Quince here in Perth WA but nobody has any. All the people I have talked to have never seen any in the nurseries anywhere. I figure you must be operating in the Eastern states. Do you have any contacts in Perth who may be able to help me find a Quince. Thanks.

Yeah it might be hard in WA to grow as well. Only the clubs there might be able to help. I’m on the east coast and it isn’t that easy to get here but you can get it if you look hard enough.

I have heard that if you cut the thorns about in half that they dont grow back and only the new growth will have them.....
