I absolutely love how you get every bit out of your food. The bowls are clean! It drives me crazy to see people who waste food.
I hear my Mom say, " They must not have worked for that food, the way they are wasting it!"
She's been gone for 15 years and I still miss her. It's good to see others with her values!

You have no idea how long I have been waiting for someone else to echo this statement! My mother used to say “That people are starving over in Africa, so, don’t you dare waste that food!!” I am a firm believer in (waste not, want not).

It drives me bonkers when people waste food. My kids working in grocery and restaurant industries say it’s heartbreaking how much food is thrown away that they aren’t allowed to rescue. I wonder if it’s a generational thing because I had to clean my plate as a child and was taught to never take more than I could finish.

My great aunt when I was small used to send us apple butter that was out of this world delicious. Through my entire life I only found something similar in one place. Apple butter in the stores are not tasty. I finally tackled it last year after watching Heartway Farms video. I added a small amount of cherry juice like my family said yhey did. It turned out so fantastic and every time I eat it, it reminds me of my childhood.

A few years back my hubby bought several heritage apple trees and got several bu of a variety of the different varieties from the tree farm. I canned up spicy apple mince, pie slices. Saved all the peels and cores and made apple peel jelly. Ran the pulp left through my Squeezo and made the puree into apple butter. It's a family favorite and a big hit!

Noticed your store bought brown sugar. Did you know it's simple to make and you'd never have to buy it again. It's made with granulated sugar and molasses. 1 cup to 1Tablespoon. I'll use 6 cups sugar with half cup of mollases into my mixer. Let it mix and fluff then put in a half gallon canning jar. Lasts us quite a long while before I need to make more. The mixing fluffs that 6 cups to 8 cups that's why I use 6. Just in case you didn't know.

      @@dianag4025 sure!
      Crockpot Apple Butter
5 pounds peeled and sliced apples ( I used different varieties).
      3 cups sugar
      2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
      1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
      1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
      1/4 teaspoon salt
Place apples in crockpot in thirds layering sugar between each layer.
Add rest of ingredients on top and pack them down as well as you can.
Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Stir and reduce heat to low and cook for 7 hours, stirring occasionally. After 6 hours uncover and cook for the last hour. Mixture should be dark brown and thick.
If you want a smoother apple butter you can purée in a blender or with a stick blender.
Place in sterile jars and lids. Water bath in hot water for 10 minutes or you can freeze.
It takes a while but you can do other things while you wait just stirring occasionally.
      I hope you enjoy it!

Another fantastic video! I'm a little surprised to see you don't make up you're own brown sugar. I recently priced brown sugar at Walmart. Wow! I'm glad, I make my own. Thank you, Pam and Jim, for all that you do! P.S. pop the whole bag of hard brown sugar into the microwave for 30 seconds. Be careful, it can be hot to handle but. it will soften even the hardest of brown sugar bricks, lol.

I just canned up 19 half pints of apple butter. I did the long process of 2 slow cookers going of apples going for a day and a half low and slow. I don't mind the long process only because i have the cores and peels to make apple scrap jelly too.

I have been making & gifting homemade applesauce using 3 different types of apples for years. I use a gallon of Apple cider instead of water to cook them down. One year I had the bright idea to buy large size cans of applesauce, it was horrible. I haven’t tried homemade applesauce, which I’m sure would be a better choice.

Yumm!! I love apple butter. This sure beats the old fashioned way. I remember my mother, making applesauce from scratch, 😢 peeling bushels of apples, then turning it into applebutter. She made hers outside, in a huge copper kettle, over an open fire. She stirred for hours, using a long handled, wooden, applebutter paddle, with holes in it. I remember seeing bags of sugar, ground cinnamon, and a small bottle of cinnamon oil for flavoring. I'm not sure what else went into the kettle. I also remember clean up of the copper pot, was a good salt and vinegar scrub, followed with a good rinse. I use a couple drops of cinnamon oil, whenever I bake an apple pie.

Thank you for letting know about your wonderful applebutter experience. Do you follow your mother's practices or has the technology helped you modify your making of applebutter? Your cinnamon oil sounds interesting for your apple pie making. Jim

@@RoseRedHomesteadmy mother cooked for a family of nine. Mine was only a family of 5, so I'm happy to say, mine were much smaller batches, made from applesauce I'd canned previously, or purchased apple sauce. The last batch I made, was in a roasting pan, in a slow oven. It needed only an occasional stir, not constantly like mom did. Mom's recipe was from an old Kerr canning book, which i now have, I checked, and it included sweet apple cider, cinnamon, allspice, and sugar, with her own addition of the cinnamon oil.

Pam: If you own an electric roaster. They are usually large square white electric appliances with a lid commonly used for turkeys, usually sold in farm and home stores or hardware stores. They are particularly handy for projects such as this type and also for thickening tomato sauces. I have 3 or 4 from the large family gatherings. The roasters are very good for applications such as the one you are illustrating. Also I am lazy, when I make applesauce, I just thoroughly wash my apples, remove any damage and put them in the pressure canner at 5 pounds of pressure for a few minutes, consult your canners guide and usually within 10 minutes you have apples ready to be turned into apples sauce you just dip them out and run them through the food mill Eureka, you have applesauce without peeling or coring. Or just mash them with a potato masher and strain through a large hole mesh strainer if you want chunky applesauce. Some varieties of apples make a lovely pink applesauce when processed this way.

From comments and this video, i learned: truly cook down the apple butter much past what you would for applesauce. See the middle of video when she shows droplets of Abutter throughout cooking. Put around 1/4c tart cherry juice in 1 crockpot of Abutter for better flavor. Also use maple syrup instead of sugar. Add pears too if you want.
Buy litmus test strips so no longer need to add excess vinegar to perfectly good recipes!
    Thank you all!
