I love this knot. I love to use braid to fluorocarbon with this knot. I have this setup on almost everything. I used to put a dab of superglue on the knot in the beginning. Lost my little tube of super glue so I don’t use it anymore. Lol Never had an issue the this knot. I have done it with a headlamp at night. Once you get the hang of it you can do it with ease. Gene love you videos I have learned so much from you!
@Flukemaster of all the FG knot videos this is the one that got my FG knots picture perfect. Thanks!
I just used this knot this weekend and I love it. The only time I've had an issue with it was when I didn't sinch it tight enough. Definitely recommend!
Just wanted to thank you for this video. Used braid and fluoro leader for first time ever and used your video to make my first ever FG knot. It held up well so far. Saw one end a little frayed so may add an extra knot, as I messed up the two clinches at end.
Nice to see you up this way! Hope you had a good time!
I’ve tried to do it but keep falling back to the Uni-uni. But it makes me feel better to hear you say it took a couple of days to learn it. Been missing the Friday Night Lives. Enjoy ICAST.
Wow, that wrap on the truck is great!
I know this video is from almost a year ago. But, A lot of people complaining about the amount of time it takes to tie the knot. Tie up the night before (this is an INSANELY strong knot!) it will not weaken as easy as a uni or double uni connection. And over time it becomes faster and easier to tie, just like any other knot. Love the content Gene! Please keep it up 🤙🏼
I know. I can tie one down in about 45 seconds
Best braid to leader know I’ve ever used. It took a week of aggravation to finally get it down pat but it was worth it. I have yet to have one fail, my Seaver invis x leader will snap before this know will fail. It’s worth the time and aggravation to learn. 🎣👍
Its a pretty straight forward knot. First time tying it and seems pretty strong. Goes thru eyelets pretty good. Going to give it a cast tomorrow!
Nobody ever mentions this when tying fishing knots, so I will: Once you've tied a second half hitch after the first one, it has become a different knot, called a double half hitch. If you add as third one _behind_ the double half hitch it's called a taught line hitch. You're welcome.
@SilentDiablo that’s not what I wrote.
I've used the FG knot ever since I saw your first video on it. I swear by this leader knot now. It's never hung up on my guides and I've yet to have the knot fail. My leader breaks before the knot fails. 100% recommend this knot to everyone.
I've had great success with the FG knot. As you said Gene, one of the most important and overlooked steps is to set the knot after wrapping and first half hitch by pulling the leader and braid end apart. It is how the braid bites into the fluro. I've also found using a fluro of higher strength than the braid ensure a good hookup.
I always tire my fg knots the night before I go out. If I need to change leaders on the water I fall back on the easy and quick uni to uni. Good video!
It was an easy knot for me to learn. I love it.
Thanks Flukmaster. Great vlog.
Also a no-tension way of tying this knot and i find it has become my go-to for heavy floro leaders on the surf
Hands down the hardest knot I've learned to tie and I never start incorporating knots if I can't tie them with ease so even when I started learning it's been a good week of tying it up. I feel like I can use this knot now. It's a very very good knot no doubt. But I'm not completely convinced it's leaps and bounds better than others knots. It does feel more solid.
Best joining knot. Best fishing channel.
I would definitely have to say the same thing that I notice is two years ago but I revisit the videos that some anglers make and there’s only very few that have switched our game up and has mastered a little bit better have what they put out for advice two years ago compared to today. I know that on my end of it I only been fission for largemouth and smallmouth only the last five years and two other men and women who’ve been doing Bass for over 20 years and honestly I’ve only seen about nine men on here that actually are very truly honest because to angler zone here responded back to me about what I was doing wrong with my jig fission I was intimidated by it so this guy explain to me very few things in detail and believe it or not I’m catching fish just like some of your videos that you just put out about the wacky worm the way you fish it yes I’ve actually caught a lot of pike last two months but bass also but I think the way you just describe this video is going to hurt a lot of people and make them frustrated because it’s one thing to keep up with the way the nuts go around for some people let alone because they’re going to try to literally try not put it in her teeth and do exactly what you did to a T because some people just don’t realize that you’re not saying do it exactly like this but like that in their own comfortable way some people don’t have that six cents I speak into the mic I’m not typing a key. Sorry about that but I listen to you guys and I do a lot of tournaments here and Baltimore Maryland I do electric bass tournaments Baltimore county rocky gorge but I really want to get in to Western Cumberland Maryland up there where deep Creek Lake is it’s a man-made lake and that’s why I switched over to breed and then Alberto knot is very simple and it is very strong also less your railing in a shark or a 45 pound blue catfish I think that Alberto knot long as it’s used correctly and I don’t know even if there’s a correct way of using it just fish in it right and turn it right I don’t understand failures on either side of both nuts to me the Palmer nuts but that’s a knot 🪢
Love your videos
I use the FG & love it!
I use a Japanese tool I bought off amazon, helped me a ton.
still enjoying the tool?
Michael McCullough I use it every time!
Still prefer Mark Davis method of tying.
Great video as usual. Thank you.
My tried and true go-to knot. Thanks for the demonstration!
hey i saw your new boat at bucks island the other day i got to say what a sharp boat
Thanks man! super nice video 🙏
Thank you for teaching me the FG knot that’s one strong knot
I spent a couple hours practicing tying this knot......I found that you don't need a super amount of tension on the mainline, you don't need to have the entire weight of the rod pulling against your teeth.....I don't use my teeth, I don't like having a line that's soaked in lake water, in my mouth.....I use my lip gripper to hold the line, it works great.....enjoy your videos....keep up the good work....
I love your enthusiasm Gene but damn 😂,,think I'll stick with the anchor knot lol
I put a couple of drops of super glue on the knot at the end. Although the glue won't adhere to the PE, it will soak in a provide a coating for the knot. It will prevent the half hitch from coming loose and your knot won't chafe if it reel it into the eyes and cast it.
I'll stick with the Alberto. Far easier than any of the other knots and a very few failures, though it can catch if not quite cut properly. Why is this knot not ever talked about? So much easier than the others to tie
The Alberto is about 30% weaker than the FG when you compare break strength.
i just do double uni, takes 60 sec
I learned this knot awhile back with holding the line in you teeth method. Unfortunately the braid ended up damaging the enamel on the back edge of one of my lateral incisors. It went bad in the back. I couldn't see the damage and my tooth fell apart after awhile. I couldn't afford a root canal and had to have it pulled. This is a good strong knot but I switched back to the Alberto for braid to leader after that. Not knocking it just watch your teeth doing it this way.
Ha, we saw you blow past us on I 79 North a month or so ago on the way up there. I was surprised not to run into you at Fish USA.
I have used and like this method.
@flukemaster how funny I came to this video because I’m completely changing all my rods over to braid + fluorocarbon and needed a how to video…..and I’m from Erie PA lol
Helle Gene, I like your videos and would like to learn the FG knot, but can you do the same video with a heavier line so us old folks can see. I would appreciate it. Looking forward to your next video.
Here is the original video he recommended the first time to learn how to tie this knot. It's much easier to see. ua-cam.com/video/pjzUb5QRKuk/v-deo.html 👍
I have trouble holding the braid in my mouth while tying the not (my teeth are not so perfect). I've started using a line clip from Rapid Fishing Solutions. Clip it on the end of your braid and now holding it your mouth is very easy!
It's a hard one to tie but it's worth it. This is the type of knot that you tie before your fishing trip and have the piece of mind that it's not going to fail. If you get snagged you'll break the lure off without losing your entire leader.
This is my go-to knot. Some good extra tips in here like not needing to completely retie if it slips. Unfortunately, the AV quality was lacking.
Not going to bash the knot but it appears to require more dexterity and time than I have. I'll stick to the uni
If I had to tie that knot on a boat even by myself, I would end up tangled and hog tied. Now add my two kids... Tears, screaming, and emotional breakdowns would ensue and that's just me. Who knows what would happen to the boat and the kids. LOL
Tie the night before when setting up gear?
the FG that I tie takes waaaay less effort & I can break 18lb shooter time & time & time & time again on the same knot.
loop the mono/fluoro, go through the loop with braid & wrap the loop, up 10, down 10, then go through the loop the same way you came in & snug up the brais through the open loop.
Thanks Fluke! Just got first baitcaster(MH Fast) and was wondering what line (lb and type) you would recommend loading it up with after I become adept at using the reel? I currently have 12lb mono on it and really miss the sensitivity that I get with my braid on my spinning setups. I use smackdown braid per ur recommendation. I am bank fishing FL ponds using mainly moving baits/Texas rigs and senkos. Thanks for any clarity you can bring.
Well Gene, it's a great knot I will learn. You are the third person to tie with tension on the lines. Also you wrapped the fluorocarbon around the braid while others wrapped braid around the fluorocarbon. Slightly different approach. I noticed you finished off with a double half hitch I had not seen done before. And no flame treatment of the end of the fluorocarbon to create a small bump like others. So how does your method compare to others? Or is it a matter of personal preference?
I noticed that too. Flouro over braid. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around. Maybe it doesn't matter.
I can tie an Alberta in the dark and it’s never failed. Much love FM.
Keifer Butcher alberto
Even better demonstration that your old one!
Dude comes to Erie right as I move away, that’s crazy😢
Pretty new to advanced knots, this one wasn't that bad to learn. Once you figure out how to comfortably keep tension and pinch the coils its pretty easy.
New to fishing. Had a few mishaps with other knots and finally learned the FG. It's really very simple to tie. I think the problem is that no videos really show what the line does as you tie it. It would be more helpful to see it done with rope, I think.
How about using sting with different colors and show your example so we can see what your sharing with us. Plus use a background color that is visible against the string when showing your example. It’s easy.
I’m confused. I learned this knot from you. The first half hitch after coiling is on the braid? I thought it was two hh on the flouro. Then 4 hh on the braid. Am I doing it wrong or have you changed the knot a little. I love it, use it on most rigs. Would love some clarification on this. Thx gene.
Thanks Fluke, Brigsy FG knot is also a very good video if anyone is using heavier gear check it out
@flukemaster I am having trouble breaking the flurocarbine line when I set the hook. I am using 15 lb braid and 10 lb Seaguar Abrazx line. I think it's a combination of the palomar knot and spinning reel drag. What is the easiest way to know how much drag? What knot do you use with fluorocarbon? Thanks
You know the very first time i seen your fg knot vid i tried it and couldnt believe it i nailed it the first try im like that wasnt that hard and that was the last time i tied it because for some reason i can not get it right now lol
Been using this knot for the last year or two. It has failed on me once or twice, back when I first started using it, so I'm attributing it to my lack of experience at the time. Goes through micro guides like no other. My only concern is, I remember Salt Strong doing an update video on the FG (They're the first ones I saw, to teach the FG), where they specified that this knot was only for when your leader was a larger diameter than your braided line. That almost made me stop using it, but then I decided I would continue to use it, until I saw any issues. To date, I have not.
Clear something up for us.
Some videos say the leader is supposed to be bigger than the braid?
Does that mean in diameter? or Lb test?
I love this knot when i tie it right but why does the tag end sometimes end up on the opposite end lol?
4:58 i trust any advice from a guy that has a construction truck backing up in the background
I've been using the FG knot for awhile now. But I still run into an issue every now and then and have not figured out why it happens. When I start the first 3 or 5 wraps and cinch them down, they end up bundling and creating a ball. Often, if I continue, the rest of the knot will look fine but there's a bundle of line at the beginning of the knot. It hasnt seem to affect the strength but I does create a bigger spot when passing through the guides. Any recommendations?
You said it was 6 lb floro leader, what size was the braid. I've gone to 20-30 braid as the base line on my reels and use leaders. When I have tried to tie the FG when you go down to 8 lb or less leader, I struggle with the FG. The braid seems to over power the leader and I don't have success getting the getting the leader to stay straight so the braid wraps. Any suggestions?
Can this knot go into the spool and not grab during casting or do you shorten the leader to avoid that?
My buddy and I both broke our leaders off the other evening. While he was jacking with his FG knot I tied a quick Alberto knot. I managed to land two fish before he finally finished. The FG isn’t for me
Just takes practice. I can tie mine in 1 minute.
@flukemaster Gene,
thanks so much for your channel and all you do to teach. I've really learned a lot from you! I wonder if you might be able to help me through a problem I've encountered:
Recently I set up a bait caster as a go-to weightless wacky Senko setup. The rod is a 6'6" MH BassPro Bionic Blade that I've had for nearly 20 years with a Shimano Calcutta 201B reel. 40lb Power Pro in hi viz yellow to a 10lb Fluoro (Seguar Red Label) leader. My thought is the yellow braid gives me great visibility for watching for strikes on the fall and also increases sensitivity and casting distance for the weightless setup.
I've used both an FG knot and an Alberto knot to join the leader to the braid and both have failed. I caught a few smaller fish and it seemed fine, but in both cases I had big fish on and lost them due to the leader failing at the knot. I do not have the drag locked down or anything, so I don't think that's the issue. The FG knot failed mid-fight, not at the hookset anyway.
Could you offer any advise on how to make this successful? Maybe step up to a 20lb leader? I'm in Northeast Georgia and mostly fish small ponds, but the water is crystal clear in the summertime.
Thank you!
It’s a line diameter problem. The diameter of your braid needs to be thinner or you need to bump up the leader to something thicker.
@@Flukemaster Ok, that's what I had heard/read elsewhere and was afraid of. So I guess I'll be stepping up my leader size then. Thanks!
It's a great knot for prepping the night before, but if you bust up your fluro on derby day and need to tie a quick leader the FG is slow. The Albright may be slightly weaker, but you can tie it in thirty seconds (with moderate practice) in the wind. Admittedly I have very shaky hands so I'm always thinking about that when I use a knot.
But The fg is way slimmer and goes through Micro guides
You should get in contact with Jimmy Houston and give him some UA-cam tips. He is honestly asking for help. I think you can help. Just consider what he's done for the fishing world.(great video by the way👍👍)
Can’t go wrong with the blood knot and it’s easier to tie
I doubt anyone will use this knot after watching your video. You make it look like a huge pain in the ass to tie.
I'm lost, I'm sticking to my old knot lol 😂
Im still trying to teach my boy the palomar!
Keep at it. It’s worth knowing
look up the red phillips knot. Gerald Swindle uses this.
I searched how to tie fg knot there are better ways you don’t use your teeth. I don’t have teeth from an accident so had to keep searching but found one salt strong showed it.
It slips on me 50% of the times I have tied it. Most frustrating knot ever, but awesome when it works.
Team Jesus Outdoors make sure you keep tightening the wraps every time you make one. Also, when you’re finished tying/wrapping try to pull on the leader line and the main line REALLY fast to engage the braid into the mono, it really helps.
Add more wraps
Have you tried the new SC knot??
Would love to actually be able to see what was going on with maybe rope or thinker string. Was moving way to fast to see what was going on. Thanks for trying to show us lol
nice vid
Gene, I tie the FG in my garage and I can almost always pull the leader out after its completed. Does it matter if the leader is lighter test than the braid itself. I notice with the leader lb. test is higher than the braid, it always works out better.
The fluoro should be a larger diameter than the braid so it doesn't slip... Remember though that braid is a smaller diameter than flouro when comparing the same lb tests
So you start by just pinching the flour carbon?
I’m convinced you are FLAIRs dad 😂
😂😂😂holy cow I never thought of that but your rite!
Looks like a total pain in the butt. I always have great results with the Alberto knot. I'm sticking with it.
I used double uni until I jacked a 6lber on swimbait and my knot broke. Finally learned FG knot after that. 😀
Literally what am I doing wrong. I do everything exactly as the videos say and have the coils that look right, but as soon as I pull both ends after making the half hitches the leader just slips right out lol.
Used to tie fg but if its not absolutely perfect it will fail every time. Sometimes I'd have to take a couple tries just to get it to cinch down correctly and even then you're not guaranteed a perfect knot.
My fluorocarbon doesn't rap around the braid it just all balls up together
I've tried for an hour and my wraps keep endiing up all bunched up and not wrapped neatly. 😮😡
Hey Flukemaster, can the FG knot only be used when wanting to attach a leader to braid? I was trying to attach fluoro to mono and ended up with a mess. I’m wasting line trying to learn. Please let me know. Thank you!
The braid is actually what grips the fluoro. Wouldnt recommend
colton n Thank you
I have found it is easier if you put a belt around your waist if you don't already have one, and tie your main line to the belt buckle instead of putting it in your mouth. Thank me later.
Raise your hand if Flukemaster tied an FG knot on your couch !
I've tried this knot for hours this past weekend after watching about an hours worth of videos as well. In EVERY video it's nearly impossible to see how anyone ties the half hitches after they wrap the flouro around the braid. Gene, could you make show this with something bigger like shoe laces and different colors?
Edward Rossiter the half hitch is very simply, its like tying a knot on anything.
I have a video idea.Perhaps you can try filming this with a black background on a table with some paracord or something. We can't see what you're doing. You explain it well, but a lot of us are visual learners.
I don’t understand why people struggle with this knot.. after doing it a few times it’s the easiest braid to leader knot there is to tie… especially when in a boat or kayak
I am a firm believer in a good knot, but i think you can take things a little far when you are worried about a 200 pound know for an 8 pound leader????
you gotta tie a loop for your front tooth - works for me as I got a gap
I actually just leave the knot from the previous leader most of the time. It works great
sometimes its slips, sometimes it doesn't...and there is no rhyme or reason for it to go either way
Has anyone ever tried the Surgeons Knot? I don't see many videos out there about it and I hardly ever hear anyone talk about it. I have literally never had the knot fail and its super simple and small as well.
@Stoney Lonsome I use it for every kind of braid to leader (fluoro, mono, copolymer). Never had a fail. Cinches down super tight and tiny. Especially on spinning applications.
@Stoney Lonsome Yeah. We're thinking of 2 separate knots. Here is the shortest video I could find on it.
ua-cam.com/video/Z2aXQLV2vGA/v-deo.html
I use anywhere from 5 to 6 loops depending on how small in diameter my leader is
Touch of superglue makes it 101%
Only knot I use
Terrible footage: blurry, hard to distinguish what's going on.
Mine isn’t as pretty as yours but imma hope it works, thanks a bunch
8 or 9 loop blood knot is better imo.
Show JD in your videos
It may be the strongest knot, but it’s a pure friction knot. Not a single bight.
I haven’t had trouble with a Uni/uni know or an Alberto knot. Maybe if I eventually constantly caught huge fish.
Yes, the strongest leader knot and very compact - not thick like other knots.
Want some excitement? Try this outside on a windy day.
I think I'll stick with my Alberto knot...never fails
Update--- I watched the video a few more times and have now perfected the FG knot. It's actually not that hard
Gene, I'm a knot lover (and teacher) had researched the heck out of the FG a few years ago trying to find the way to make this "9" knot more like a "3" in tying ease. It's a great knot, but too many anglers give up on it because it's so hard to tie. I finally found this Aussie with a different way to tie it that I've been using ever since. Take a look: ua-cam.com/video/ncSZyIdr0dQ/v-deo.html
There is a much easier way too tie this knot also a dab of superglue and it will never come untied.
