How My Epic Road Trip To Santa Ended In Disaster!!

- If you've been watching the series on my $600 Volvo 850 T-5 Wagon, you know how many problems I've had in the restoration process. This car sat in a field for years and was completely destroyed by rodents. But after re-wiring the engine bay, replacing two CV axles, changing the fluids, and replacing the timing belt... it's time for a roadtrip!! Or is it??
In this video I will attempt to drive the car 2 hours south to Santa's Workshop. I say attempt because everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Enjoy!!

On an Automatic Volvo, the shift light flashing means there is a problem with the transmission. The most common problems are a bad shift solenoid or bad PNP switch
This was a complete disaster. Was a great time!
On Manual Volvos equipped with the arrow light, this is your shift light. On an Automatic Volvo, the shift light flashing means there is a problem with the transmission. The most common problems are a bad shift solenoid or bad PNP switch.Aug 23, 2007
The arrow in the dashboard usually means that your car is in w"winter mode" or in third/low gear if you have an automatic, with a manual there should not be any orange arrows in the dashboard. If you have an automatic it is possible that your transmission is going into :limp mode" this is where the transmission starts in 3rd gear instead of first because it has detected a problem with itself, many times this happens because of a bad solenoid in the transmission.
Had that symbol on my Volvo 240 auto for the overdrive when it was engaged.
Volvo's last a long time because you never stop fixing them.
my volvo has taught me more about working on cars than any other car ive owned lol .. i do love it tho
I had a 2001 Volvo s60 beat the hell out of it never left me stranded and never had to fix it I ended up trading it for a Toyota
I’ve never had a problem with my Volvo 940 wagon 2,3l turbo never left me stranded or anything 500k km on it right now
@@Holmbergihergi1 2.4T in my 2001 V70 and just around 370,000km. I’ve been catching up to differed maintainance on it. Oil leaks, power steering leaks, failing brake booster, window regulators .. rough shifts in the transmission and occasional stalling 😂 it’s a real event …. My Volvo sits in my driveway with a base ball bat at night demanding more of my time and money hahaha. But I’m enjoying the challenge
@@Austin-ge7cb I always drove Toyotas and on some level I feel the Volvo is just as dependable - every time I turn the key, it does what I ask. But it fails in a much more dramatic style than any Toyota ever did hahaha. Big learning curve going from a Corolla that’s for sure
Jaguars used to have this stalling issue, and it was the crankshaft sensor. Don't give up Mike, it is free content for you. You don't need to buy a car.
That indicator means transmission fault. Shift solenoids are a common fault on these. The lockup solenoid as well. The PNP (park neutral position/transmission range) switch is common as well. It looks like yours is gonna be solenoid faults because the engine is stalling from the incorrect gear ratio or torque converter clutch sticking. You can use a scanner to verify correct position and see which solenoid should be energized. You wouldn't be doing anything wrong if you just threw the solenoids at it, they're a common problem.
It was like watching Duel with Dennis Weaver trying to outrun the 1955 Peterbilt 281
Love that movie
Mike, I had a similar issue on my 97 850R. It would stall and had the flashing arrow on the dash for the transmission. When I read the codes the only thing that came up was a crank position sensor. I changed that with an OE sensor and haven't had the issue since. My car acted up worse when it was warm. Good luck with it!
Love this video. 😂😂😂😂 You must by a Volvo like 3000 miles from home. bring Randy and drive it home. Would be epic. Hello from Bergen,Norway Mike. 😊😊😊😊😊
Yeah He Could Buy Mine ... That would make for an awesome video
Although the cars don’t work sometimes, I still enjoy the videos, and they are fun to watch!
Mike, Maybe you should try channeling a Lexus!
The rpms seam very high when you was at 65.
I’ve read that this arrow indicates a problem with the transmission, said it could be a transmission PNP switch aka neutral safety switch that can be cleaned or replaced.
Car dies, turn it back on and drive it to it dies again.
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
Thanks for always entertaining Mike!
Cheers Pat 🇦🇺
Stress and frustration must have been palpable!
Hail Mary Nabisco Cookies 🍪😅
On previous generations of Volvos, that arrow normally meant that the transmission overdrive relay had failed, causing it to get stuck in third gear, at least at highway speeds. Happened to me a couple of times on a 740. In that case, it simply involved pulling the old one and replacing it with a functional one, accessible in the dash relay and fuse panel. Your wagon, though closely related, is quite different , however. Assuming it's still a transmission problem. I'm guessing an internal one. Let's see if I'm right as the video progresses
Mike your luck has to get better may better with American cars.😊
Awesome video and love your sense of humor with all the problems. I guess it's true might as well laugh because crying isn't going to help...😅😅
This most be the best ride for you , Mike 😂😂😂
Can a generous subscriber in Europe please send Uncle Mikey a complete full dash assembly with the dark birdseye maple wood trim and Shifter centre console.
You hit the nail on the head when you told that truck off when he honked at you!! 😂
Love seeing you guys hanging out with Michael, I love that shop!
Hellow guys good luck hope yall make it back be safe buddy's
Great video and friends😀
Wow just wow. I love seeing Santa on your own channel because you two seem to be getting along! Keep it up Mike this was a funny but interesting video!
Gotta be something electronic. Crank position sensor or maybe intermittent power to ECM?
Good thing you brought that electric bike along
Great videos
Loyal viewer from Canada 🇨🇦
Me too 😊 Montreal
Volvo for life
I'd leave that crab on the side of the road with a signed title and trike on!
Santa has a great workshop.
I remember them Volvo's everywhere at a point Mike, dont see none anymore man hardly see Volvo's at all realy now!. 👌✨👌👍👍👍
Fuel pump
Volvo ... You either love em or Hate em. I'm not sure how I feel about mine though, sigh... Mine has been kicking my wallet's butt lately... Great video as always...
P.S.I had Purge Valve issues with mine today.
Hey you should fix it at randys shop it can be the throtebody
Hi 👋 Monkey Wrench Mike !!!
I just became a new subscriber to your channel.
After watching you and Randy with his Monte Carlo when it broke down because of the transmission. I hope you guys made it to the auto show.
I'll be watching your videos Mike.
Take care and keep up the great work.
Nice to see Jesus ☺️
Is even better the second time around.
🤣VOLVO = Very Odd Looking Vehicular Object
volvo. good for rear diff d44, & rotors, calipers. the breaking system is like modern abs.. at least there more comfort than a vw bug..
Got my VOLVO 165 in 1977 . 4 speed & overdrive transmission , airconditon , power stearing , full leather interior & now close to 500K miles with 1 engine & transmission ; stay away from frontwheel powered Volvos . The only real good volvos are still the old rearwheel powered ones !
Ah Mike..I feel for you. That dashboard would drive my OCD mad. I have a 07 XC70 with 180k on the clocks and so far she’s been a good-un..the AWD is fragile as glass but overall a solid car. I think maybe the sitting time on yours has let a lot of things corrode out. Don’t give up on the channel though, you’re my favourite YTer! Crack a beer and put some Jarreau on 🎉
2500@70mph seems a touch high
The red arrow is overdrive off , fuel pressure is most likely the reason it’s cutting out , fuel pump ?
Wrong
Put An LS engine in it!, would be a cool Wagon!
Michael, I don't know if you should paint that car. I think you should really not need to find you a good truck in a good car and get rid of all your Hoopes. I still say it all the time when you and Randy get together. And Santa, you guys are hilarious, hilarious. Yes, love. It can't wait to watch you guys on power tour
Trucks are boring, thst is why we watch him buy cars like mercedes and volvos and so on 😂
Had a 05 volvo xc90 fuel pump Regulator die, and it did what that is doing.. uses a ford FPM
Check the angle of the throttle plate to the angle of the pedal position sensor. You can find that with obd2.
Hey Mike sounds like the Volvo needs to be in a junkyard
Yeah PNP switch is cruddy and you can probably move the gear shifter from park to low for about 10 min and it will help
Save it. Mike. 👍🏼
Oh my !!!
I like your videos. Sorry about the Volvo. Keep trying to save cars. I have a truck I need to get back to driving.
The Volvo got tired of you griping about it so it quit on you. Lol
My parents had a red 4door Volvo an there car did that an it was one of the solenoids was all it was so hopefully yours is simple an thx for the videos
It's probably something real simple like a sensor or bad gas or maybe the driver .
Doesn't seem like you're getting any boost, either. I think you're having multiple issues
Not sure about the shift issues but its acts like my car did once the Catalytic Converter started to seize up, couldn't go faster than 15 mph and then it would shutdown. After it cooled, it would run fine until it got hot again.
What you said about the flashing arrow ⬆️⬆️⬆️ really made me laugh and maid my day because I'm ar work on a weekend 😢😅😅😅
So I've owned a few of these older volvos. Every single one has had the worst front shocks I've ever felt. New ones solve the problem. One I purchased would actually bounce down the road like a bouncy ball. It was quite hilarious. New ones solve the issue. Whatever supplier they used sucked. Also, for whatever reason, the interiors are cheap and rattly. Lol. Makes you appreciate an old benz. Great engines though. Amazing milage, durable, and they go like a bat out of hell.
Computer problems buddy , cheers 🍻
I feel like it’s going into safe mode because of bad or corroded wheel speed sensors.
Intermittent electrical failure is possibly the main battery fusible link has a hairline crack. Sometimes difficult to see but would cause the warning lights to intermittently glow and lose all power.
I had a 850 did the same was the traction control module
fuel filter?
My Volvo has been a challenge, learning the mindset behind the engineering. That said, drive my 05/2.5t,187k, daily
To add insult to injury Randy's Volvo was cheaper, easier to fix and cleaned up nicely.
It sounds like it has something grounding out somewhere. With all the rat infestation it had it could be any place along the chassis or the throttle body. Did you say it is a cliff hanger or you were going to drive it off a cliff.
This tremor in the car is double the clutch 🙂
.... for shure the lack of maintenance / service
Santa Michael Randy said that good job 👍 maybe the el cabrio can see the update randy Michael Randy
first thing i do with a ''new car''. . is, change ALL the fluids, read the handbook, be familiar, know how things work. general shake pry every joint. oil, grease all moving parts.. lastly, never buy a volvo..range rover, jag, or anything with a computer.. ausie..
Ecu connections mine did it I gave up water was my issue lol
Is not getting gas all the time too!!
Gummed up throttle body
Feels like a crank sensor problem ? Hopefully you can fix ❤
You shoulda kept working on the e38. You were so close to sorting it out
Cliffhanger finale is Mike driving it off a cliff.
Idle air, fuel pump, filter possibly clogged
Hey Mike I love you but that rant about drivers got to me because back when I started to drive a big rig the rule was if a truck was passing you then you slowed down but these modern drivers do not have the same manners , but in general even four wheeler traffics has gotten meaner and nastier sir 😢
And the reason why there is so many tires aka gators in the road way which is also on RV’s is because of retreads mostly and high air pressures at or above 100 sir and temperature and joints in the road can cause it to spilt .
check the alternator it has a loose connection. Your issue is electrical.
There is plenty of these volvo's still driving down the roads here, it just needs that fix hehe. If you could just read out codes with laptop or phone.
👋😃👍
Hey Mike I just saw your video on the wall that you’re having problems with I just wanted to tell you I’m glad you made it to Santas workshop to get it painted tell him that I said hi and tell Randy I said hi I’ll be looking out for all three of your videos your videos his videos sent his workers which works for a Videos rain is videos your videos all three were all three of yours your friend‘s Videos because I love all three of you and I watch your videos Santas workshop’s videos and Randy‘s videos I love all three of you, so I will keep looking out for all three of reviewers videos. I hope you have a good rest of the day. I’ll be talking to you soon. Talk to you later.
Well now. We know why Mike was sick when he was working on the monte later that night. Breathing all that crap from the headliner.
This reminds me of how much trouble Randy’s pizza delivery car was giving him.
It looks like you need a new engine and transmission thats why the car Is buckling😮
My car turned off once while I was driving, it was because the cable on battery terminal was loose because the mechanic didn't tighten the nut
The computer is probably starting to fail, mine is!
Stuck on side of Turner Turnpike.😮
Wow. You really need to read on how things work. the service light always turn off after x min and the arrow is for the OD. You should do a real service on it.
Could be a random clog in the fuel pump or the throttle body
Mike, how much is the trike??? No, not the Volvo, the blue trike??? FYI, there will be a Mass for the Volvo this weekend, Jesus would like to his wagon back…….
❤🥰👍🤘
Hello Mike aka Monkey Wrench Mike, Randy and Mike aka Santa's Workshop. Getting the Volvo Wagon painted by Mike aka Santa's Workshop.
Transmission needs to shift! Something wrong with transmission or wiring problem?
Clogged catalytic converter or maybe a bad ground?
Me thinks we get a little salty when we break down don’t we!
I know I do!
Crank shaft sensor after getting hot
Maybe you should have left the volvo in the field where you found it?
Cars can make you made but please keep the channel.
