The bit where he talked about the deceased owner and doing things in the car it probably hasn't done does have a weight of emotion to it that I love...
This is Top Gear on a budget but just as good. In some ways a lot better because I found Top Gear lost its way and didn't really care about consumer/affordable cars as time went on and was more interested in gimmicks. I made a comment but I'll say it here too - this episode hit me hard in the feels and reminded me of the roadtrips I did up north from the south east what feels like not very long ago but was practically a small lifetime ago now. My first cars, budget motoring which never cost me more than a few hundred pounds and lasting memories I didn't even know I was making at the time. Watching this and looking back reminds me of how important being mobile and able to drive was to me, and still is and as far as I'm concerned will always be. Some of the happiest times of my life have been had in cheap cars and the open road. Lads, we need to stand against everything that tries to stop our freedom to be mobile and independent. You know what I'm talking about. 'Pay as you go', new taxation, everything that's going to be thrown at us as motorists. We're all in the same boat and we want our kids to experience the same freedom as us, whether it's in a £500 Citroen or Tesla. We aren't giving up our rights to drive.
This would be so much better without trying to be some sort of pound shop version of Jeremy, James and Richard. It's so forced. I'm sure they have their own personalities in there somewhere - they should use them.

When you have noisy wipers, pick up some isopropyl alcohol and a can of silicone spray. Using a napkin or a cotton ball, clean the blade surface thoroughly with the alcohol, then treat them with silicone spray and wipe them down a second time with the spray. Usually solves the noise problem. Sometimes even cleaning the windshield will improve the sound. I used to hit my windshield with Kanuba wax, then the rain would be well deflected from the windshield, allows you to not even use the wipers for a length of time.
Pro tip, when you push back a car without a reverse gear, it is easier to lift the wheel in such a way that it rotates in the desired direction. Helped me get a car up a small incline when I couldnt push it. But please, be aware of the parts within the rim so you dont crush your fingers on the brake caliper.
Amazing how these three have become the Clarkson, May and Hammond trio of the current days and definitely my favourite trio of the times we're living in!

I agree, I had a MK1 Focus Estate and it was a superb old bus. MK1 Focuses are amazing drivers cars for what they are, they were truly revolutionary at their time of release and they had a great range of engines too . Too bad most have now rusted away and those that are left are either knackered or have had their cat's nicked by pikeys.
Great show boys! Takes me back to the days when Top Gear was great and the reason I fell in love with driving! If the BBC aren't knocking on your doors yet, they soon will! All the best to Jenny too - get well soon ❤
the fact all these cars cost under 500 quid, and done such a journey, shows, that we need to stop going out and spending so much on brand new cars, when its clear, old cars are more then up to the job
Thats not the question though… You want the comfort You want the power You want the prestige You simply want to induce others to think you are doing better then they are. I drive a fairly large Bmw. And yes I ldo love that a fair amount of people think im doing better then they are, because of a bodykit and 21“ alpina classic III rims. Thats just how our society works and Im a damn slave of it. However, I also love doing 200kmh on the Autobahn for as long as I feel to, and still be able to talk in comfortable voice volume and enjoy the airride doing its work so that I can relax on my journey. And still… any other 500 buck car would be just fine… but the life quality suffers considerably :p
I love this so much. It’s been a long time since a UA-cam video has made me feel so happy. Gives me hope for what post lockdown travel to the beautiful UK would look like ❤️❤️❤️
@@samueljones3668 newer TSI engines are Junk, u can throw them away After 150k km :p but the original engines from those Golf 4s is just amazing. If u keep em well, u cant destroy them, u just cant 😂
@@iamlegend3379 New tsi engines junk? Ive seen many of them in harsh tropical conditions pushing 200k km. Then again, ive also seen many bmw e90s last pretty long in my country, maybe because cars are treated as long term investments where I live so people dont skip maintenance or mistreat em
I've actually went on a 4000km roadtrip trough Europe this summer in my 1998 Citroen Saxo for which I payed 400€. It's also only on 41k km and drives better than a lot of modern cars i've driven. The funny thing is, I'm 1,90m and was perfectly able to sleep in the car comfortably with all my stuff beside me in the car. You can also sleep pretty much everywhere, cause nobody's expecting someone to sleep in such a tiny car. I wasn't expecting how far 60hp can bring you, but I made it to an altitude of 2400m in the Austrian Alps. The way down was actually a lot scarier than the way up in second gear. It really is the perfect car for a one-man-roadtrip! Next time you buy a car think about what you really need :)
This show alone brought this channel to a whole new level. I would LOVE to see one of these challenge/drives once a month or so to really add that amazing level of coolness to this channel.
My first car was a 1999 VW polo estate with the same 1.9 SDI and It was a lovely car to drive below 80kph because to get over 80 to 100 or 120kph was almost impossible... it had around 350,000 km on the meter but I absolutely loved it!
On Alex's car, the temp 'shooting' up to 90 in traffic sounds more like a thermostat stuck open so that it sits well below operating temp on normal driving and only reaches temp with no airflow over the radiator. As a side note that's not a PD engine alex
@@joeman840 typical stuck thermostate. Got same issue but after 400k km in my tdi. Part cost about 20 GPB. So nothing horrible. I think boys didn't check their cars just to make movie more fun. But they should at least change or fill up engine oil before journey :)
Actually it sounds more like a thermal switch or radiator fan itself. If the thermostat was sticking closed, It would overheat whether you were driving or not.
@@schrodingerscat8621 Thermostate failure might also mean that it stays open so coolant is never heated enough because all the time full flow goes through radiator. Persolanally I got this type of failure. Even took the old out and and put in water then checked what happen if I heat and boil the water. It was not closing in cold water. The new one worked perfectly.
@@wisniatd The only true wisdom is knowing we know nothing. Socrates In the first episode the complaint was running hot in traffic, that’s not a symptom of a thermostat stuck open, then it would run below operating temperature, but then in the second episode, he indicated that it was running cold sometimes, that would be a thermostat issue. The thermostat certainly is a cheap part to replace and good insurance against keeping proper temperature. But vehicles that start to run hot when they are stuck in traffic is usually poor radiator flow or a radiator fan not engaging when needed.
Facelifted Mk. 1 Focus is a great car, and still looks great. We had a 2002 1.6 Zetec model about 6 years ago. Unfortunately the rust killed it - rusted through around the seatbelt mount points and the rust killed the power steering rack too. Uneconomical to repair, so it got sold to someone who just wanted the engine for a project. Shame. Ours was plain old silver, though, not ULTRA LEMON YELLOW like Ethan's.
Ethan, well done for dismantling the fence, I had faith in you. Jack, the high rpm isn't a problem (I had a 1.2 B corsa and drove at 4000 rpm for 3 hours, she loved it) but the low and god knows how old oil is.

Get well soon Jenny 15.51 Lane hogging at its best/worst 😂 How the hell did Ethan put up with those wiper blades for that long 😂 Maybe he should have used some of the wood to replace them.... It couldn't have been any worse could it? Great video boys.
Fun part about the Golf is that it could accomodate quite a few engines, including 1.8T and VR6, so such wagon could be pretty swift for its times. I personally had a 1999 with 2.0 Petrol (115hp) and it was pretty alright back then.

@@hitachi42inchtvsarepowerco79 and other hilarious jokes you can tell yourself
When you have noisy wipers, pick up some isopropyl alcohol and a can of silicone spray. Using a napkin or a cotton ball, clean the blade surface thoroughly with the alcohol, then treat them with silicone spray and wipe them down a second time with the spray. Usually solves the noise problem. Sometimes even cleaning the windshield will improve the sound. I used to hit my windshield with Kanuba wax, then the rain would be well deflected from the windshield, allows you to not even use the wipers for a length of time.
I knew it after all the Instagram teasers, this is going to be a great one
Wtf r these relpys?

Brilliant episode, lads. Ethan looks so sorry for himself and absolutely broken at the end. Poor bloke! Can't wait for part two!
This reminds me of OG Top Gear, the golden years! Loved it from start to finish guys!
Amazing how these three have become the Clarkson, May and Hammond trio of the current days and definitely my favourite trio of the times we're living in!
just watched the 2nd part and came back here.
both vids combined are quite simply the best thing ive ever seen on this channel (Might be a bit biased being from Inverness, even though i live in zummerzet.)
and Jenny if you're reading the comments on this vid, i wish you a speedy recovery and i'm sending you all the love and positive vibes in the world.
That focus is already the best and I've only seen less than 5 minutes, I had one and it took every battering I gave it.
Yes, my week just got a whole lot better!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥 this is proper television material. Great content guys!!! 👏👏👏
This was literally such a great watch you need to do more of these challenges
The best part is that B&M sells wiper blades lol. (Where they got the fence panel and oil for the Golf)
Yeah like wtf they went to a place that sold oil. They'll have wiper blades. Why didn't Ethan buy some?
I had to laugh when he said that the oil was black in the golf. Diesel oil is always black and sooty.
Great show boys! Takes me back to the days when Top Gear was great and the reason I fell in love with driving! If the BBC aren't knocking on your doors yet, they soon will!
All the best to Jenny too - get well soon ❤
Alongside old Top Gear and The grand tour, this has to be the best car show special ever!
And car trek to
the fact all these cars cost under 500 quid, and done such a journey, shows, that we need to stop going out and spending so much on brand new cars, when its clear, old cars are more then up to the job
Thats not the question though…
You want the comfort
You want the power
You want the prestige
You simply want to induce others to think you are doing better then they are.
So good, watched every second
Ethan, you missed a trick. You should have swapped the wiper blades over from Alex's car, thus giving him the annoyance!
Unfortunately they probably wouldn’t fit
@@patrickmartin3322 just chuck them in a bush then, even better!

I love this so much. It’s been a long time since a UA-cam video has made me feel so happy. Gives me hope for what post lockdown travel to the beautiful UK would look like ❤️❤️❤️
Ngl I absolutely love that wagon. Color, shape, ride height, I think it’s gorgeous
i think if you would give it some love, it could do another 250k for sure :P
You need to get out more
All it needs is a TSI engine swap, new bushings all round and boom it'll run forever.
Next time you buy a car think about what you really need :)
did the same in a citroen AX, same height too, i found going up some insane slopes was scarier than going down
mountain roads are no match for 60hp - most of them were designed for cars with 1/3rd the horsepower (per weight)
I can't stress enough on how amazing this challenge was. We need more!
Praying for Jenny! All the best to you and your family! Thanks Car Throttle for supporting a good cause!
I've been waiting for this since seeing it on Insta!
You are such fun people. Your channel is very adventurous.
This show alone brought this channel to a whole new level. I would LOVE to see one of these challenge/drives once a month or so to really add that amazing level of coolness to this channel.
"JOM suspension" and "nice and smooth" in the same sentence is something I never thought I'd hear
Like riding around in a bouncy castle
Second I heard you say “Top Tip”, I just instinctively hit like. This has that energy I’ve missed from Top Gear.
This is one of the best videos CT has ever made, absolutely bloody brilliant!
My first car was a 1999 VW polo estate with the same 1.9 SDI and It was a lovely car to drive below 80kph because to get over 80 to 100 or 120kph was almost impossible... it had around 350,000 km on the meter but I absolutely loved it!
Getting flashbacks to my first car, more or less the same as the Golf, except automatic, petrol, and called a Jetta.
On Alex's car, the temp 'shooting' up to 90 in traffic sounds more like a thermostat stuck open so that it sits well below operating temp on normal driving and only reaches temp with no airflow over the radiator.
As a side note that's not a PD engine alex
Typical VW
Socrates
In the first episode the complaint was running hot in traffic, that’s not a symptom of a thermostat stuck open, then it would run below operating temperature, but then in the second episode, he indicated that it was running cold sometimes, that would be a thermostat issue. The thermostat certainly is a cheap part to replace and good insurance against keeping proper temperature. But vehicles that start to run hot when they are stuck in traffic is usually poor radiator flow or a radiator fan not engaging when needed.
Omg yes! This is EXACTLY like top gear! I love it :D
Also, best wishes to Jenny and her recovery, we're all rooting for her :D
When he bought you the wooden panel , you were ment to take a fence 🏴😂
That Focus still looks sharp, 20 years on!
Not messing with the 69 upvotes...
Obviously this video is reminiscent of the old top gear days and you absolutely nailed it! Really enjoyable.
These are my favourite type of challenges that you guys do. Keep more of them coming if you can!
Funny how youtube channels are actually succesfully executing the top gear(may, hammond, clarkson) formula, thanks guys for making this type of stuff, awaiting a special in some far away country.
This is and was better than Topgear in my opinion.
The video quality is out of this world. On par with the big shows!
Love how Alex parks in a way that needs him to push it as he's got no reverse 🤣 think Ethan is the only one who bought a sensible car
Reality challenges we can all get involved in by 3 genuine blokes with a great sense of humour! Seriously hope you guys get the recognition you deserve and get on our TV screens ✌
So well filmed and put together it warms my heart 🤤
Get well soon Jenny
15.51 Lane hogging at its best/worst 😂
How the hell did Ethan put up with those wiper blades for that long 😂
Maybe he should have used some of the wood to replace them.... It couldn't have been any worse could it?
Great video boys.
It's so lovely that Alex's Golf gives you nice workout to exit a parking space
Fun part about the Golf is that it could accomodate quite a few engines, including 1.8T and VR6, so such wagon could be pretty swift for its times.
I personally had a 1999 with 2.0 Petrol (115hp) and it was pretty alright back then.
Watched this last night. Looking forward to the next episode. It was hilarious! It reminded me of old top gear especially when Alex parked his car nose in and then forgot he'd no reverse! Lol! I do enjoy the challenges you guys do.
