+MajorRoe I think this shows the brotherhood are just prejudiced bigots. They don't like misuse of tech but are misusing liberty prime. They hate nukes but use nukes. They hate Danse not just because he's just a synth but he was a part of the brotherhood and pulled a fast one over their eyes. That latter part is more hurtful.

I find it both sad and admirable when Danse asks you to follow your orders. Its sad because his ideas are misguided, but admirable because he cares so much about humanity, and so little for himself, that he's willing to throw away his own life if that means protecting the world. Even if it means protecting it from himself. Again, he's tragically wrong, (which is why my lone survivor ignored his pretty faced request), but it does show that underneath the BOS indoctrination is still essentially a brave, selfless, good man.

I agree with you completely. Only thing is that dance is actually a very dangerous potential threat if he were to be reprogrammed or ordered by the institute to kill the brotherhood or reck havock on the Commonwealth with his influence, skills and knowledge before and even after blind betrayal. He's tracked by that chip. So it could be done with several coursers on his tail. How do you think the original dance got replaced? It's very evident they captured him and replaced him despite his rank and power as a soldier. So they can easily reprogram him or if he had a switch already at the institute to go hostile, they can hit that at any moment. Even after defeating the institute, he's a threat due to that code being accessible who knows where. I'm sure someone survived the fight that could make him kill. It's why Dance is a threat to the brotherhood. Maybe not at all to the soul survivor because father would have never allowed that. But to the brotherhood and the rest of the Commonwealth, he potentially is a huge danger. Imagine a brotherhood second in command marching into any of the towns or brotherhood bases with his armor and Lazer rifle. I'm sure he has stealth combat abilities as well and extensive training compared to any of the knights. They may have Gatling Lazers but with several stealth kills, he could easily obtain one and go on a rampage. Maybe even single handedly take over a vertibird and crash kammakazi style straight into the perdwyn to take it down and kill everyone on board including Maxson. He's a threat. A huge one. If you truely believe in the brotherhood, he can't live. But if you side with them based on their power and loosely agree with them and don't care about the danger to them, you can let dance live. It's as simple as that. I more so agree with Dance living because he was my commanding officer and to me, he always will be despite being the enemy I've been thinking I was against this whole time. I let him live cause he is no threat to me and he is my brother in combat. Maxson is twisted and corrupt. He obviously killed a few people to get into power. His heart is in the right place but he is Ultimately not a good person or totally just leader.

You can't be a 'nice guy' (at least externally) and run an organisation like this in an apocalyptic world.
This isn't the time for wokeism, or HR complaints about 'microaggressions'. 😅
However, he might actually be a really nice dude if you ever got to spend time with him, but he's just projecting strength and authority, as weakness would not get someone promoted.
Even armed forces in peace time need stoic, masculine 'assholes' to run things, no matter what they're thinking or feeling inside, otherwise your fighting force will not respect you or your orders when it comes time to act without hesitation.
Maxson is actually sympathetic enough to let Danse live, when you tell him how much you want to keep him around. He's really not as bad as some people make him out to be. It's just when people apply today's values onto people in this scenario, they want everyone to hug a rainbow, but leftism and diversity are kryptonite in reality, especially in tough times.

It’s enough that humans in rough conditions are a major threat themselves as raiders/fiends etc, people romanticize the wastelands too much by supporting factions like the Railroad or the Institute. Lore wise, neither have plans to actually help the commonwealth and I’m not confident SS can convince the board of directors in the Institute to actually help the Commonwealth in a short amount of time. I love the idea of the MM but even then, they need to keep the strong leadership going to keep the faction intact for generations to come. I personally think that BoS and MM would do well to protect the Commonwealth together, MM focus on rebuilding settlements and protecting them while BoS gets rid of mutants and ferals since they’re more heavily armed and protected and the settlement building goes more smoothly.
I don't dislike Maxson and the brotherhood for making you kill Danse. It is, somewhat logic, you don't know how much control the institute has, or if they could turn him against you at any moment. He also possess great knowledge about the brotherhood, so it is a logical choice to neutralize him. HOWEVER, the fact that they start calling him traitor and all sorts of things instead of honoring him and his sacrifice... That' just doesn't fly with me.
I find danse hard to like after he called Hancock a freak(he's one of my favourite companions) but maxson was far too harsh on him. hell, the companions that I expected to not care about him actually defend him, such as nick, Hancock and deacon.

Yeah, but the way I see it Macon thought that Danse ALWAYS knew that he was a synth and that he had been lying it from the start. Think of it this way, Maxon had known Danse for decades and he clearly truested him, now it's a bit weird for him to start hating him the way he does right? It'd because he feels betrayed and to cope with that he demonizes Danse. I mean, do you think the Brotherhood has any idea how the synths escape the Institur, the memory wipe and whatnot? For all that the Brotherhood knew Danse was a mole that had infiltrated them purposefully or, at best, a sleeper agent a switch away from turning of them, so yeah I can kinda understand where Maxon is coming from (not that I like it either, but I can understand his point)

Letting him live knowing that he is "the enemy" himself, that he can no longer be a part of the brotherhood? The other way he dies with his convictions intact.

Plus, liek Danse tells you, him running away didn't help sicne it probably ocnvinced MAxson of the fact that he knew that he was a spy and was runnign onyl because his cover had been discovered, not because he was shocked. I mean, if the roles were reversed, don't you htink Danse would have acted the same way?

I remember blindly carrying out Maxson's request without a second thought. Bang. Didn't even talk to him. Just blew his head clean off. Looking back on it, I was a monster on that first play through. Jesus. Blew Virgil's head off too. Damn. Shaun? Headshot. Deacon? Stabbed in the stomach. Desdemona? Cut her arms off. And then I genocided the synths.
Railroad didn't make anything easier. Desdemona stone-cold ordered me to murder everyone in the Brotherhood. Have any of you thought of the kids on that blimp we all slaughtered? Thought not. Oh, and all those innocent scientists in the Institute? Killed them too. All for what? To save a few remaining synths, and maybe some vending machines in the future.
We all know about the Institute.
Minutemen are the only truly good option in this game. They don't want genocide of anyone.

The Minutemen will only fight hostiles, but out of the 3 I think the institute is less evil, seeing as they don't hoard technology, not so bad leaders, and sort of cleaner. The institute is also headed by your son! It would be right to continue his work in making and improving the commonwealth ONCE THE TIME HAS COME!

We can only hope that Danse makes his way west and joins up with the Midewest BOS chapter. They pretty much got over their hatred of nonhumans to the point where they're willing to work with super mutants (note these are the somewhat less psychotic west coast mutants) and ghouls, and there's a decent chance they'd let Danse in even knowing what he is.

+Kuma Bear I heard a rumor that after Elder Lyons' passing on, the Outcasts arranged for Sarah Lyons to be assassinated and just eased themselves back in and took right back over. With Maxson being promoted to Elder they had an easy target to influence however they wanted, which resulted in their... well frankly their Nazi way of going about things.

That's also the Reason for the Outcasts Splitting. I was there the Day Sarah was Killed by Maxson. That was also the Day, Danse and Arthur began their Relationship. And Danse getting Pregnant For the Fifth Time, a Few weeks Later.

There was a cut alternate ending to Danse's quest where the Sole Survivor allies with Danse to confront Maxson and supposedly 'dispose' or kill him. Danse will then declare the SS as the new Elder and somehow managed to convince the Brotherhood of his loyalty and they accepted him back.

@@lizghetti8059 damce challenges maxson to a trial by combat, it was cut from the game but the voice files can be found. You can also generally take the direction where BoS is going, like if you want them to become hostile with railroad etc
There's a mod that restores this option, if you really want it.

I hate that even though Danse was exiled from the Brotherhood, he still supports them and will become your enemy if you betray the Brotherhood. It would have been so cool if you and him led a rebellion against Maxson. Usurp the Brotherhood and make it more of a peacekeeping army like DC. Missed opportunity, Bethesda.

Janet Greenslade they cut a quest where Danse challenges Maxson during Blind Betrayal, and then after either you or Danse become Elder. There’s a Mod that restores as much of that cut quest that still existed.
Remember, he may be exiled, but his ideology still stands because he purely believes in them.
Thats why i dont mind him preaching brotherhood stuff. Tho I hate it when he acts like he's still in BoS

I didn't like it too because you know, Danse is bae, but damn sure he got a point in his speech outside Post Listening Bravo... And he was not that bad just because he let you keep Danse alive after all. Even tho letting him alive is the total opposite of everything he believes!
But in the end I really hate Maxson too. I wish he could understand that even tho Danse is a synth he is more Brotherhood than anybody else.

Yeah so choose wisely. Lotta people choose BoS over RR because of power armor, title, and a lot of misguided self righteousness. Also they have radiant quests.

Kinda reminds me of the rule of Caesar in New Vegas, where he wouldn't accept failure from the highest rank. I really wish there was a dialogue option to convince Maxson that this proves that some synths aren't that bad.

Danse cutting Maxson off while Maxson was talking about the sanctity of human life always makes me smirk. Danse is right, and he damn well knows he's right, and it's insanely wonderful seeing him face off against the Elder of the BoS himself regarding one of the Brotherhood's most ideologically extreme perspectives.
Aaaaaand thats why I reprogrammed Liberty Prime to shoot the Prydwen out of the sky. Rest in piss Brotherhood.

Think about it, SS is the only one besides him who knows Danse is still alive and Maxson doesn’t want to risk angering or losing SS bc they’re the only ones capable of destroying the Institute and he doesn’t want to undermine his own authority by letting Danse live.

so in my playthrough of this quest, danse was only wearing underwear. it was evidently a weird glitch but he looked really good in just his underwear so i didnt complain

People say that Paladin Danse ordered you to take orders from Maxson, but in this moment he is considered AWOL, which means another Paladin should be your superior. However, at that EXACT moment, Elder Maxson literally says "I am giving you a direct order Knight", which is the moment Elder Maxson goes against The Chain That Binds. He absolutely SHOULD be dismissed
The East Coast Division doesn't follow the Chain-That-Binds at all. They're reorganized under a more traditional military structure.

I could not save Danse in my first playthrough so after he was killed by Maxson I killed all brotherhood members from that point on.
You now what I love about guys like Maxson? You can waste them without being able to give a single fuck.
This is one of those moments in this game that really makes you question yourself about machines being self-aware; whether or not they should be allowed free-will to live their lives out in society or to be destroyed to avoid the Institute flipping the "Fuck you" switch on 'em and turn on what's left of humanity. Really had ME thinking about it and I still don't know what to think. It's a tough call. I'm open for anyone's opinions on the matter, as long as it doesn't get too crazy.
I won't lie this game has made me feel so conflicted with the Brotherhood. I've always loved them ever since I first saw them in the previous titles, (Fallout, 2, Brotherhood, 3 & New Vegas) and I honestly loved them in this game as well. However I was so pissed once I reached this point because Maxson wasn't making any sense from what I've known about the Brotherhood up till this point. They have always made allowances in the past in regards to bring people into their order in the past for those who prove themselves above and beyond. With literally any other elder of the brotherhood, Danse would've been welcomed back into the fold for all of his previous work and dedication. He may go through a trial period while the scribes observe him, but no one would be demanding his death. But going back to the point, I feel this game really does lack in regards of choices. I know Danse can be spared, however I find it really lame that we can't bring him back to the fold. Likewise why we don't get the choice to try to work out alliances with the other factions (With exception of the Institute, but this is mainly focused toward the Railroad.) Who knows, maybe we might get some dlc that redeems or helps make the Brotherhood not complete total dickheads that they get portrayed in this title at a later date.
I imagine it also has to do with maxson being so young. this is 10 years after 3, he's only in his twenty's for gods sake. Lyons was more wise then maxson and less impulsive. I mean star paladin cross in fallout 3 is basically a cyborg but that's fine.
+RabidDeathknight Lyons was the only really good Elder. All the others have been ether zealot wackjobs or over obsessed technophiles. We've had Elder Elijah (crazy, bigoted, technophile), McNamera (traditionallist coward), Roger Maxon II (incompetent), and Jeremy Maxon (technophile, warmongerer bully). And Authur Maxson it the worst we've see in a while. The thing is, I originally thought that this was the just more crazy western brotherhood shenanigans. But once I saw Liberty Prime I was like, "fuck, Lyons must have died and left the brotherhood to this jackass".
+Dragonblade722 Hey, I'm not saying that the previous Elders didn't have their flaws. But I doubt they would have handled the situation with Danse as poorly as Arthur did. And what irks me is that, like you stated, this is the Eastern Chapter and not the Western one. Because unless a Protectron did some unpleasant things to Sarah infront of Maxson, I don't see why he is so overzealous and a dick. And it's not like they have problems using the tools of the enemy. Their use of the Vertbirds, that for the longest type were the calling card of the Enclave, is a great example of this. So if you have a man, who has served loyally and unquestioning for years and would rather lay down his life in service for the Brotherhood than betray his comrades-in-arms, is revealed to be a synth Maxson's first response is kill it with fire despite his service?

Does his insane and frankly unwarrented (Cause seriously, where did this come from? Last we checked ten years ago Lyons was fighting supermutians and the Enclave) zelotism extend to her as well or does he have a clever excuse that makes her an exception. Cause I'll tell you, if he tried to pull this "she's unnatural so she's a traitor" bullshit on one of the greatest paladins of Lyon's time, he wouldn't last long agaist the rest of Lyon's Pride or the LW.

For me it seems like the ball was dropped with regards to Maxson's motives (As far as we know for the time being) like somewhere between now and then was lost in translation for him to have such zealous ideals against the Synths without taking in consideration the people who for lack of a better term raised him. And I maybe mistaken but wasn't the Eastern Chapter more closely bonded together, sort of like a family, because of Lyon's practices and ideals. So it seems odd that he'd treat Danse like this, when Star Paladin Cross was there with him as he grew up so such things like Danse being a synth, should not effect him as much as it did in regards of his choice to have him executed.

I think that's because it's clear he's a synth, to them he is effectively along the same lines as a Mr Handy (though they still hate him). To the BOS Danse is seen as an abomination because he is a "machine in a humans body" and is programmed to blend in with society etc.
Dang, Maxson's outburst at 13:18 was really nicely acted and animated, makes you forget about all the other bugs and game-breaking glitches in Fallout 4

You cant really judge the minutemen's strength alone, there are countless possibilities about how the minutemen ended up
