It's really sad when you think about it. She didn't marry Tom. She never married. She died at 41. And yet her novels are all about love and happy endings, the heroine winning the heart of the rich hero. But she had a short life and her sister Cassandra never married. Just sad. Real life compared to books seems lacking.
So true. All I thought after completing the movie was..."So, books can never be compared to the real life? Will I never have the kind of happy ending that I desire after reading my books?" It's making me so sad y'all.
Tom Lefroy: I have no money, no property, I am entirely dependent upon that bizarre old lunatic, my uncle. I cannot yet offer marriage, but you must know what I feel. Jane, I'm yours. God, I'm yours. I'm yours, heart and soul. Much good that is.
I cried so hard at the end, it was so touching. Jane Austen is definitely my favorite author and she was deserved so much more... She wrote love stories with happy endings, and she deserved one of those endings.
Fantasy 87 yes! Jane was known for having a sharp wit, which actually drove away men of that time. She wrote Pride and Prejudice in the same year that she met and was forced to part with Tom and she wanted a heroine in similar circumstances to herself to succeed in love like she unfortunately never did.
I love her novels. She's the author made me fell in love with literature. She's also my reminder that not everyone affords a romance. She's all about flowers and heart, love and all. But she dies young, and alone, she didn't even got to finish her last book. From Jane, I'm ready to believe that.....
I read somewhere that Tom's wife's mother name was also JANE!? And hence he named their eldest daughter as Jane? Idk how much truth is there but yep. Nice coincidence tho :)
The saddest thing about this movie is that it probably really happened in Jane's and Tom's real life. If this really happened, Im a little bit thankful by the fact that Jane died at 41. But Tom.........he died at 93! I mean, can you imagine living a long life with that deep, consuming sorrow!?
JT 1987 Feel grief and idk maybe you'll find someone else eventually. I don't have any experience with it though. But I would cry and cry and cry if my husband would die (if I had been married), but that's just what I think.
Yes I had the same thought once. When you get your heart broken, time will heal and erase everything and you will find someone else and fall in love again. But as I grew older, I've read and heard so many stories similar to this. That sometimes you can't completely erase someone, even when you are married and have some kids. Human's heart is mysterious.
JT 1987 True. My mom and dad have been married for 25 years but she still tells me about her first love. They were engaged but she ended up moving to America and lost connection with him. Soon there after she met my dad. There are times when she remembers and cries. I guess you never really forget the one that got away because you always wonder, what if?
Maybe there's where 'Persuasion' comes in (since it's written later in her life) . Like Anne, Austen probably long for the lost opportunity to marry him. Perhaps it's a wishful thinking poured out on her books (in Anne's case, a second chance came + the Wentworth returned richer). Probably what she hoped to happen in her own love life. no, I don't really know. I probably make no sense
Tabby Roberts No, he was not rich. Tom Lefroy came from a poor family and he had 9 siblings and parents that totally depend on him, financially. He was taken care by his uncle who was a judge, that gave him money. He sent his uncle's money to his family, secretly, to support their life back there in Ireland. In this movie it's described that when Jane found out about this fact, she thought that if they got married, their circumstances will destroy their love slowly, because Jane was also poor and had to depend on him too. She thought that they could never make it. So she decided that they can't be together. It's beautiful, realistic and tragic in one package.
But yes, in this movie it seems like he was actually rich by inheritance. In one part of this movie, his uncle told him that his mother (his uncle's sister) was actually born rich. But later in her life she decided to marry a poor guy, and then become poor too.
This movie was absolutely amazing. Tom LaFroy is so damn dirty minded and his subtle comments to Jane were hilarious. This is so worth watching ❤️😭 and the fact that it's mostly a true story, that relates so much to her actual works! You can tell most of her male characters were inspired by Tom.
Beautiful story, but the one line that struck me the most was when Jane's father was talking to her about her supposed engagement with the rich nephew, and he said, "Nothing crushes the spirit more than poverty." I think it's that pivotal scene which led her to make that inevitable decision in the end when she turned her back from Tom. :(
For such an expert on writing love, her real life was quite ironic. “Only deepest love will persuade me into matrimony. Which is why I will die an old maid.”
Oh God, it's so sad that they never end up together, but i admire Jane for how brave she is in letting go of Lefroy, she doesn't just think about herself, but also of others, and i almost cried when i later found out that he named his eldest daughter Jane

It annoys me so much that she got old and died and her "Horizons weren't widened" lol. The way he said it with the smile was so sexy. One of my favorite movies.I just wished James McAvoy did more romance movies.
