    One of the most important mods I feel is adding a winch. It lets me get out of pretty much most situations and some confidence to push obstacles. I installed a Warn Zeon 12s and Factor 55 Ultrahook into my factory steel bumper. I used Warn's winch cradle allows you bolt a winch in and retain that factory look.

    Thanks for this video, it was super helpful while installing mine today. Funny enough, I also have a Bright White EcoDiesel, so I’m definitely watching everything you do to yours. I was initially going to go with the 10-S, but went ahead and did the 12-S instead. Mine actually came with nuts to go on the five bolts that held the plate, so I was pretty impressed with that. Keep up the good work!

    I have a 2021 Gladiator EcoDiesel. I bought the factory steel bumper and the Warn Platinum 12S with the wireless remote.
    The long zip ties were missing so I bought some larger zip ties.
    The Warn winch bracket holes didn't line up with the Warn winch so I had to use a rotary steel file to enlarge two of the 4 holes on the winch bracket.
    I have to wire the winch, spool the rope, and install the bumper.
    I bought the Factor 55 in blue and the rope protector. My Gladiator is Hydro Blue.

    I was kind of surprised that the Zeon winches aren't already set up with wireless and you have to buy the add on. Their lower budget VR series winches are already wireless right out of the box. Good looking rig ya got there btw. Have fun building it up and stay safe!!

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  4 роки тому +1

      I agree with you! The platinum has the wireless remote for the Zeon series (but is quite a price bump too, and the chassis is larger) but it would be nice to have the basic wireless remote like the new VR's have.

    Love the front steel bumper by Mopar . Extremely functional and lighter weight then other aftermarket bumpers minus aluminum bumpers. I know many who wheel with those bumpers to this day. I unfortunately did not get them with my JL, so went with Crawler Concepts recessed winch front bumper for my JL. One of the closest fitments. Meaning gives one of the best approach angles of aftermarket front bumpers for JL and only weighs 50 lbs for a steel bumper. Keep up the great videos. Love watching you build that Eco JLUR from Chris in CALI.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  4 роки тому +1

      Did you have to cut the frame for the CC bumper? Definitely the factory steel bumper is a great addon that Jeep was smart to make available! Appreciate the comments on the videos! Back bumper next :)

    • @chrisjones2252
      @chrisjones2252 4 роки тому

      @@Casey250 I did not go with the ZEON went with the Warn VR Evo 10S so not the same size. Winching here is fewer and far between. So went with the newer entry level warn winch. Has the wireless and wired setup as well. Even with the Zeon all you would have to do is grind the corners off the mounting points on top of frame mounts. Just close plating to frame on front of bumper. Tight fit for everything. Now the back bumper is a different story, most likely you will be replacing I assume.

    • @chrisjones2252
      @chrisjones2252 4 роки тому

      I could talk hours about the JL. As long as you work to try and keep it light as possible seeing your already lighter than a stock JKUR by 600 to 800 lbs . The GEN 3 DANA 44 are so strong. They can be built to be stronger than OEM Dana 60's with C-gussets, trusses, RCV axels (front and rear{new ones out}[rated for 43" tires]) on the Dana 44's. You can run 40" tires with those axles with proper attention to weight management. So will float better on snow and climb easier with more clearance. You could not do that with the weak JKUR Dana 44 axles. At least not be stronger than OEM 60 axles.

    Nice job! I put a Zeon 10S on my JLUR & agree with your thoughts. Wish the lic plate tab wasn't part of the fairlead mount. Rather than reinstall the bolts to fill the holes from the top bumper filler, I used plastic push plugs installed with a little black silicone; same for the hole left when removing the passenger bumper end. They have a slightly textured matte finish that matches the OE bumper perfectly.

      One of the biggest considerations with this Jeep is to try to keep it 'legal'. Being able to replace the end caps if needed helps with that, as well bumpers here need to have crash cans that function as OEM so it meets that need too. As well, it was most cost effective to do this. As well, I can show you guys how it worked out, this Jeep will evolve over the next 2 years I imagine.

    Now that you have the winch, what are you going to connect the hook to on a 2-line, snatch block pull? These have no place to mount a D-ring and the aftermarket recovery points require you to cut the bumper to make them fit. What were the Jeep engineers thinking here? They could at least given us an option to purchase a recovery package and made the bumper to accommodate a later upgrade, rather than doing an aftermarket hack job.

      @Casey250  4 роки тому

      Nope, I welcome the challenges and paving the way on diesel wrangler mods and wheeling. The torque is great and I love how it sounds. Its hard to put a price on what you find 'worth in' with a vehicle, if your looking to get into a JL and be as budget friendly as possible then skip the diesel and maybe even a Rubicon. If you want the most powerful motor and all the options of a rubicon, then this is a great spec. The $6k cdnextra for the motor (I was getting an auto either way) seems like a cheap upgrade for more power to handle future mods.

      I believe winches should be 1.5x the GVW of your vehicle. I have a 10s in my JK and my 12s in my JL, the 10s has never let me down in the JK. I wanted to try the 12s in the JL to see if the line speed was noticable. For a JL, I don't think the 10s or 12s will make a difference. Keep in mind the 12s is slower and has a shorter line (80ft vs 100ft) but if you are using your winch with out spooling out enough wraps, its rating is decreased the more wraps that are spooled on the barrel.

    Maybe for the 5 holes left behind from removing the wench plate find rubber or plastic plugs this way you eliminate another potential rust area(s) by using bolts.

    Casey, how many wire rope (steel cable) have you seen fail? How many synthetic ropes have you seen fail? I have been wheeling sence 1978 and have owned a jeep and a winch sence 78 I personally have never seen a winch cable fail but I have seen 4 synthetic ropes fail. Nothing personal I like your channel but I don't like people repeating what they have heard from people peddling products. I do know you can't own a JK or JL with with cable.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  4 роки тому +2

      Hey thx for the comment, appreciate you bringing this up and I will share my thoughts further on this subject. Synthetic line is inherently safer in any situation that any point in the rigging fails, there isn't really a debate, the physics of the line don't store and release energy like steel cable. Cable can be safe but requires more knowledge and education on operating it safely (dampers and distance). I've seen a shackle fail as people like to buy the cheapest ones they can find (I like to only rig with my shackles but you still need to attach some someones bumper / mount point), and I've seen rigging fail moving a large log off a trail. Could they be avoided, maybe, but synthetic gives a little more insurance. My personal preference is synthetic line as I don't find the extra cost to be considerably that much more, its lighter, doesn't rust and can be handled if needed with out gloves, is faster to setup a recovery, and is safer should something go wrong and / or someone be standing in the wrong place. As much as we like to think we can control everyone around us during a recovery, it just takes one wrong decision and one unfortunate thing to happen and someone can loose a life and when there is two options for me to choose, I will go with synthetic every time. I just don't see the down side to synthetic beyond cleaning, inspecting, and spending a little money to replace it when it wears down.

    12,000 lb winch? You pulling a M1 Abrams out of a ditch or logging with that? Seems excessive for a Jeep. But I suppose if you got a buddy with an F350 who gets stuck a lot why the hell not!

    • @onejerrysmith
      @onejerrysmith 3 роки тому

      Having more winch pull is not an issue. By the time you figure how much pull you lose with each layer of rope on the drum, it is not overkill.

  • @onejerrysmith
    @onejerrysmith 3 роки тому

    You made a BIG mistake by not throwing the positive battery cable that came with the winch. If you want even more efficiency from the winch with less heat build-up, go find a length of used welding cable someone has replaced and solder ends on to it. The large strands in the battery cable will heat almost immediately. Heat in that cable reduces the amperage it can carry. Welding cable is made to carry high amperage for long durations and will not heat nearly as much as the battery cable. This is an old heavy equipment mechanic's trick.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the info. I trust the engineering at Warn, and I have never had issues with battery cables on any of my Warn winches.

    • @onejerrysmith
      @onejerrysmith 3 роки тому

      @@Casey250 Here is the easy way to check what I'm telling you about the battery cable. Do a pull under even a moderate load on the winch for 20-feet or more while holding the battery cable in your hand. It will begin heating immediately. Try that with the welding cable and you'll find far less increase in temperature. That is allowing the maximum amperage to get to the winch motor and is going to save your switching and motor from excessive heat and failure. The battery cables will work of course, but it's an easy improvement to upgrade.
