    When you get to the point that you do not want any more line off the drum......
    Go out one foot from the fairlead and paint one foot of the line lime green. Nice and bright and it gives you two foot leeway!

    Your key for the winch line is the best way to go the one you were talking about with the with the screw and the flat washer usually fails just saying you’ve got the better system and yes it was a pain to get the key in there on the spool but it’s 100 times better than the other one just an old truck driver who’s worked in the oil patch running heavy duty winches

    Hi Casey love the videos but I have a couple of (hopefully) constructive comments.
    1. It’s a drum, not barrel
    2. The red cover is insulation for the first wrap of line to protect against heat from the drum in hard pulls
    3. With the line going through the drum you can literally pull all of your line out and use the winch. With the other method of a little screw holding the line to the side of the drum you need to leave several wraps on the drum or you’ll break the screw and the line falls off.
    Love the channel and the content! 👍

    • @arronlowe7458

      Correction to # 2, meant first layer, not first wrap.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  Рік тому

      The first 10 wraps are the anchor wrap. It is covered in a heat resistant layer. Threfirst layer is required for winching and never use the winch past the first layer (10 wraps). The winch is rated at 12,000lbs with 1 layer wound on.

      @@Casey250 Good point and I didn’t mean to imply that you should let that much line off the drum as a normal practice but that if it did happen the line will stay on the drum rather than break the little bolt off and leave you stranded. Love your channel and the Demonator is badass, cheers!

    So what I don’t understand, with the move towards synthetic and soft shackles, and away from hurtling metal, why does everyone replace their hook with other big chunks of metal? I replaced mine with a factor55 loop guard that quickly comes off and then I tie the soft shackle right into the rope loop. It works great and no big chunks of metal involved under tension if there is a snap. Am I missing something (which is quite possible 🙂)?

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  Рік тому

      There is a trend to the metalless setup. To each their own. I like my hook. That hook is not detaching from whatever it is connected to. Either the bumper / recovery point is coming with it or the rope will break and leave behind the hook. If someone likes no metal great. Often a metal shackle needs to be use on bumper recovery points. I don't like my winch line sitting open to the elements getting blasted by UV, dirt, salt, snow, sand etc and then it being compromised when I go to use it. I need to pop a rope guard on the ultra hook like my JL and then it's done. Also it looks fancy and I like fancy :)

    • @davidcarrico3385
      @davidcarrico3385 Рік тому

      @@Casey250 definitely to each there own, and good that you are going to have something super strong there so it’s not the weak point. And to your point, it does look good. Regarding keeping the rope clean, the Factor 55 loop guard I have does keep it clean. The only issue is you risk misplacing the loop guard in the heat of the moment when setting up to use the winch. Regarding needing a metal shackle on bumper recovery points with edges, I do carry two beefy metal shackles, but only pull those out when I really have to. Looking forward to seeing the videos from Easter Jeep Safari!!

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  Рік тому

      Winch should be 1.5x the vehicle, but also consider, a winch is rated on its last wrap on the barrel. Each wrap you add reduces the mechanical advantage of the winch, so if your doing a short pull, its nice to have extra juice in the winch to compensate.
      Layer 1 - 12,000lb
      Layer 2 - 9894lb
      Layer 3 - 8117
      Layer 4 - 7324
      So if I got a 10k winch, it would only provide me with 6103lb of pull on layer 4, which is almost certainly under my vehicles weight when its loaded up AND add in possible obstacles / rocks / logs / mud adding resistance.
