  • This horse was poorly started and as result is scared and cold backed. In this video I am starting to restart him and rebuild his confidence.

    The people that had him last probably weren’t very kind to him when he was saddle started either. I love your straight talk approach to horsemanship and handling.

    I'm from uk and we have different methods but I find it very interesting to hear other ways of approaching problems. Occasionally cold backed horses have been made sore by a saddle and that stays in their mind. Very nice type of horse and lovely temperament.

      That definitely can make them cold backed but what we mostlynsee here that causes horses to be cold backed is they were rushed when they were started.

    This is why i like your videos, because everything you do has a purpose, and you explain why. I am learning a lot.

    Nice looking guy.
    Watching this one reminded me of a saying from another horseman I follow.
    "If you take the time it takes, it'll take less time".
    Our understanding of the horses mind definitely makes for happier horses.
    Thanks Tim! Looking forward to seeing how he comes along.

      Am old cowboy used to use a similar saying about starting horses. He said if you don't wait on them now, they'll make you wait on them later.

    Thank you for this great example in working thru this issue. I'm at this stage with my very similar gelding... Now I have a definition for it " cold backed", and renewed belief this can improve.

    I haven’t come across much information on the ‘cold back’ issue. Thanks for shining a light on it. I have heard of folks just dealing with it and getting through as best they can. The whole saddling ritual becomes well entrenched in horse and handler’s minds to the point it becomes habitual. By doing what you have done here you break the ritual and habit. I wonder if Buck is a bit shocked and surprised that you didn’t complete the whole ritual?! A handler can also tack up and not ride. Just go through the motions to keep everyone sharp and mix things up a bit. Maybe that would cause some individuals some stress? I don’t know. This is a great subject for community discussion.

    I really like your holistic approach and find your vids to be some of the best out there. What confuses me though is how few likes they get, especially considering there have been 2.4K views for this one. Maybe more dramatic descriptions in your thumbnails will help to get more eyeballs.

    Thank you for another fantastic video! I love watching the progress you make with these horses. At one point you mentioned to watch to see if the horse would stand still or if he would move when you pulled the saddle off. He did stand still; my question is what would be the correct action to take if he started walking off? Just curious

    • @timandersonhorsetraining
      @timandersonhorsetraining  Рік тому +2

      I would not have taken any specific action if he had walked off however it would have told be that he was not ready to be pushed any further.

    Well done and good example of how you should start out.
    Do you ever introduce the saddle coming from the right side too?

    • @timandersonhorsetraining
      @timandersonhorsetraining  Рік тому +9

      Actually I am left handed and when I am starting a horse I usually saddle from the right first just because it is easier and I did that with this horse and he acted very scared so I went to the left. I will eventually go back and work on saddling from the right eventually but I need to get him comfortable with the saddle first.

      @@timandersonhorsetraining Hello Tim...... I purchased/rescued a lovely QH that has been, from what I can tell, a "pass around pack" because of his bucking "issue". He's very similar to Tucker but my "Dakota" is closer to 10-11 yrs. old as the Vet and Dentist tell me. I've got 55 years of experience with horses so have worked other horses through their "issues" including bucking and have started many horses under saddle. However, I'm now 66 years with some physical issues therefore I need help. This horse is lovely and very recuperable I suspect, like you did with Tucker, that he was "Cowboy Broke". He tells me that he was hurried along and was required to "buck it out" and not given the chance to use the thinking side of his brain. He has a very calm natural temperament but has developed a level of expectation and anxiety about working, especially with a saddle on. He's finally to the point that he will Walk and Trot on the lunge uneventfully. However, we are stuck with the bucking response when I ask for the canter. I can ride him out on trails, in the arena with or without a saddle but I don't dare canter him in the saddle yet, until I can work him through the canter anxiety. Any suggestions? [BTW....with no saddle, he is just starting to canter on the lunge without bucking and has learned quickly that the release is there when he does so.] Do I need to keep going back to square 1 like you did with Tucker in Video 1? I don't want to push him through the bucking since I have also learned that there is little recovery in repeating the bad behavior over and over.

      @@pjketchamrobinson483 in his situation I would try to not go all the way back to the beginning. I would trot asking for the lope just before a direction change. The way I lunge and changing at the wall should help his mind think about the wall and what you're asking and less about the saddle.

      Good video! My 15 yr old show horse (western pleasure) has been laid off working due to injury for a year. I thought he’d go back ready to ride, but he surprised me! He acted like a fresh young horse not ready to ride. Maybe he needs what you’re doing with this horse Tucker. You just never know about horses so I’ll do more of this and see how he reacts. Thank you for all the videos!

    Hi Tim, should i do this with my Quarter Horse Mare? She spooked while i was unsaddleing her, and lost the saddle off the back, had a wreck. Now she is scared to be saddled, as soon as she see"s a saddle , i cant even catch her. She is a spooky horse at the best of times.

    • @timandersonhorsetraining
      @timandersonhorsetraining  9 місяців тому +4

      First thing I'd establish is, is she spooky because she is spooky or spooky because you're not being a leader. You should watch my spooky but not scared video.

      Thanks Tim, she is a spooky girl, but she knows how to behave, and has great ground manners. Ive had her for 2 years, but every spring she seems to get really spooky about silly things. I get a bit nervous, as she goes up when she does"nt want to do something. I know i could be a better leader, but my nerves get in the way.@@timandersonhorsetraining
