    There is so much more to being a good horseman than many of us are aware of. The education I am getting from your channel is immeasurable. I have never owned a horse but have ridden for many years and no one ever explained the differences a horse goes through physically due to all the things you have mentioned. It only proves you are never too old to learn. Thank you.

    He shouldn't! That wasn't reassuring. I thought you throw a blanket pad on and boom the saddle and you ride! I'm so impressed that you're taking the time to custom fit for comfort and protection of the horse. I love it!

    I do a similar padding on my 29 yr old gelding but I put the build up pad on top of the regular pad. I think it helps the regular pad breathe and absorb sweat.

    It should be possible to take a 3-D scan of a horse and print bars or pads for the saddle that exactly fits the horse.

    It'd be really interesting to see how his back shape changes as he muscles up and if you have to make any adjustments to what saddle you use/how you pad it as he continues in training with you! I'm currently (slowly) conditioning my hard-to-fit gelding for endurance and am waiting to get him a custom saddle for the exact reasons you mentioned. Reportedly he broadens out a lot when he's fit.

      @@timandersonhorsetrainingA couple comments on treeless saddles.
      I have a Tuend treeless saddle made in Italy. It’s by far the most comfortable and secure feeling saddle I have ever ridden in. After hours of hard trail riding I was never sore and I have very little padding on my backside lol. The leather and workmanship are incredible. There is a genuine sheepskin pad with suede on one side that came with the saddle. The underside of the saddle itself is also thick genuine sheepskin. It’s neither English nor Western exactly but it does have a Western rigging for the cinch and English leathers and stirrups. Since it molds to the horse, there is no need for shims or half pads etc. Unfortunately this brand of saddle is no longer made.
      The close contact lets you feel exactly what the horse is doing, which in some cases may save you from a wreck.
      As far as my horse’s comfort, which is the most important issue, I am on my second Perch X QH mare. Both are extremely round big barreled and do not have prominent withers. They are very wide. They have extremely comfortable gaits. My saddle fits both perfectly.
      I understand the concept you mentioned of weight distribution. I am however only 115 pounds. When I am done riding there are no dry spots whatsoever under the saddle, no ruffled hairs, no hint of sore backs. I rode the first mare very heavily over 10 years and she was never sore. We rode judged trail rides over all kinds of hills etc. in Virginia and we also did occasional Hunter shows or fox hunting or even parades.
      I am not recommending that the treeless saddle is for everyone. Not for heavier riders , nor beginners who are more likely to bounce around on the horse or lean excessively.
      It would be very hard for me to go back to a treed saddle now. As a bonus, my saddle weighs 8 lbs, where some of your typical Western saddles are 20-30 lbs.
      So do you still think in my situation that the treeless saddle is unacceptable?

    Curious question. You said you don’t like the treeless saddles but what are your thoughts on riding bareback? Not constant but just maybe during winter and until the horse is more fit. Thanks love your methods and videos.

    • @timandersonhorsetraining
      @timandersonhorsetraining  8 місяців тому +8

      I think bareback riding is great for the rider to develop balance but it's generally not great for the horse. Not so much because not spreading the weight but because it takes an extremely good rider to keep the horse in frame bareback.

    Saddle fitting can really be a nightmare if you have one of " those" hard to fit horses and from reading other places it seems many struggle to find a saddle that fits . I have never seen that small pad you used but it sure worked well for the horse in the video. Another good saddle fit video. You have several good ones for viewers to see and learn from.

    Hi Tim and crew. I am loving your videos especially your "boring ones". My newest horse and I are on a journey that will hopefully take us to western dressage. I am transitioning from the hunter world so some things are familiar but some are totally different. Your videos are such a big help.
    My question is, and maybe you have done a video on this, but how do you clean your everyday saddle pads. I struggle with that. Hunter people just use the washing machine!😃
    Thank you again for what you do!

    Re: treeless saddles. I don't believe molding to the horse's back is the point of a treeless saddle. The structure or foundation -- what would be the bars in a treed saddle -- has enough flexibility to move with the horse when the horse moves. In order to do that, there's obviously some give, but the best treeless saddles are not glorified bareback pads that collapse under the weight of the rider. They have a lot of structure, so the rider's weight is still spread out to some extent.

      Handmade? Right around $7,000 with some tooling. But really, the sky is the limit. Factory stuff? $3,000 & up. Of course, used is somewhat less, if you can find what you need.

    I have a 4 1/2 year old cow bred QH mare. My saddle isn't fitting correctly on her. She has ruffled hair on each side of her whithers about the size of soft balls when I remove it. I have not looked for a new saddle yet because i know she is not fully grown. At what age would you considered the best age to look for a saddle that fits assuming she doesn't grow into this one? Or what adjustment can be made for now?

    • @timandersonhorsetraining
      @timandersonhorsetraining  8 місяців тому

      Usually I try to wait until they are 5 which you are close. That ruffled hair Usually comes before white spots. I'd try different pads or another saddle if you have it temporarily.

      The tree is “bridging”. Hopefully the horse will build muscle and fill that middle area BUT as Tim said this added shimming is temporary. If you have an older horse or one who cannot be muscled up then the saddle bars must be fitted with more “rock” in the bars. I have 45 years of experience in endurance riding and I’m a trained saddle fitter and Tim is completely correct in his assessment of what to do with horses in time and according to what you are doing with the horse and how often you keep them in shape, performance or not. And it never ends…😂 just when you think you’ve got the saddle fitting issue whipped another horse shows up for training that will show you you’ve got more to learn about it. I own over a dozen saddles and I bought a new mare that is only 15 hands and she’s stout! After trying everything I had that was a wide turned out she took a double wide draft tree! Changed her whole attitude. I don’t think anyone ever fit her properly in her life. Now she wants to work and be ridden, she’s happy! And so am I.🤠

      @@livesoutdoors1708reasons I will never buy a custom saddle with a tree made for my horse. Horses bodies change over time like ours and add conditioning in whole new ball game.
      One of my horses is 15.2 and 1400 pounds. He's a QH, registered and DNA, but I swear he's a throwback wears a #2 shoe lol.
      Anyway I struggled to find a saddle that fit him. Luckily, I have a 50 year old barrel saddle made for bulldog types that fits well.
