  • This horse was poorly started and as result is scared and cold backed. In this video I am starting to restart him and rebuild his confidence.

It’s so helpful when you call out the small movements he makes that alert you that there’s a problem. Very educational. He sure was walking on eggshells when you first cinched up the saddle. I don’t think that many people would’ve even noticed that or when he stacked out. I wouldn’t have.

So lovely to watch your perfect balance of challenges to make him grow! If I was to guess why you leave him with a mouthpiece, I would say you want his tongue to be active, and have stimuli that acts into digesting? Also to have a structure that says yes to work if he is easy to bridle. I didn't catch you say anything about it.
Now I am wondering about him crossing hind legs while walking. I saw it most when he got the saddle on. To me it looks like tension in the hipflexors, the iliopsoas that tightens the back and pelvis. I guess you made notes about his breathing? His face and shortness in moving tells me he is breathing shallow or quiet. That is emotional tightness in the human body, and deep diaphragma and hipbone connection. He probably works himself through it when you leave him, but I say this is important work to help him avoid ulcers or other tummy issues. If you could help him stretch his nose to sniff at something... Maybe some woodshavings or sniff out a carrot in a cone. I know it weers off from your "think about the saddle" strategy so it might not be a good idea. But I truly believe that tension is what needs to go, and in my humble professional opinion deep breaths will matter. Cheering you on as always, from Norway!

You are spot on wirh what you are seeing. All the tension has to go away to keep him progressing, that is why I leave him"to think about it". A horse can only stay tense so long, that is why I do enough work to bring the tension to the surface then leave him to figure out that he is still ok. It's a fine balance to put enough pressure on him to keep progressing but not so much that he can't progress. I've also notices that he is very tactile sensitive to things touching his skin. All these are things that he has to understand. In general he is a very nice horse to be around.

Deep breath relaxes the horse if I am not mistaken and one thing I’ve found is using an asthma inhaler to help them expand their breathing ability.

The weather was very bad last night. Usually when I post a video it was recorded 7-10 days before when it was posted. It takes me that long to edit and upload the video.

If he was used on a hack line would not being on the fence like that be a safe place. Where wearing the saddle is not something to be scared of in that area?

Why are you leading that horse around like you are afraid of him? Hand way up tight on the rope micromanaging him. Let him make a mistake if he's going to! Can't learn if he doesn't make a mistake.

With a cold backed horse the mistake has become a habit. To let him make the mistake reaffirms the habit.
