I’d say the characters a weak script can be saved by good characters. Most rom coms have that problem. The problem is Hollywood isn’t giving us characters but tropes and archetypes.
I watched Alien Romulus, and it is not a bad movie at all. Over all is a pretty good movie that finally gave us that Alien vibe that we got from Alien and Aliens. It has its issues: The CGI on a certain droid was horrible, it was Mando Season 2 Luke Skywalker type of CGI and how could they did that when we know they can do so much better with the deepfake or de-aged. The timeline make me confuse, cause this happens between Alien and Aliens, during those 57 years gap between both movies, and after Aliens we know the company didn't know about LV-426 have Xenomorphs, we see that. It was after rescuing Ripley that Burke send the colonies to go to the ship. Now we know the company knew that Nostromus was in fact succeed in find one the species, so why not go to LV-426, and why wait 20 years when the family went there to go the alien ship and to find the eggs? It doesn't make sense at all. And last but not least, the last 20 minutes of the movie. Until 1 hour and 40 minutes the movie was actually good. I felt I was watching a Alien movie. Then they decided to make the stupid 20 minutes finale of Alien Resurrection with that stupid type of Alien Hybrid. That's what killed the movie for me and because of that I didn't give a higher score. So I give a 6/10. It is not a 4 like Chris gave. Cause the movie is not that bad for a 4, but if there was not that stupid end or if the last scenes were with an actually Alien and not that dumb creature, it was much higher like 7.5 or even an 8. Now one thing that I enjoy was finally we see how the Alien transforms from that tiny chest burster to an big Alien and this movie answers that and I enjoy that. Cause in Alien when Kane died we see that tiny little Alien and then minutes later we see that big creature. So yeah thanks for answering that. I also didn't like the color of facehuggers. they were to dark, but that was a minor thing. So yeah, overall a good movie, going head to head with Alien 3 which i dislike a lot but in the franchise is the 3rd best. Aliens continue to be the best one and then Alien, nothing can beat those two movies. And then it comes Alien 3 and right after that this one for sure.
Its crazy to me that the alien franchise is still going. It has been disappointing fans, and has not had a universally loved installment since Aliens (#2)
I honestly wish I had stopped watching the Alien series after Alien 3. It ended and should have been left at that. As disappointed as people were with 3 (people involved included) and Vincent Ward's vision for it would have been amazing, but it's still better than any of the other crap that came after that was less about the ominous setting, the suspense and dread and building of that and instead relied on gore, crappy action, and stupid characters doing stupid things.
I'm not surprised. I know Mr H was hyped, not sure why, the problems were painfully obvious in the trailer. Casting matters. Writing matters. Hollywood continues to be broken. Sad.
@CZJames20 Eh, it aligns with my own thoughts enough to understand exactly what he means without seeing it. But, of course, if you're into it, then more power to you.
@AnoneemusNoename I guarantee you even though I didn´t see it yet, the film is much better than this single trusted reviewer is saying it is, just because it´s Fede Alvarez who made it. But I don´t care, I´m just gonna enjoy it and have a good time.
Alien original and Aliens that’s all you need to watch - unless you want to see another instalment that is performance wise like a fan film with beautiful high-end cgi, great sound and soundtrack tacked on. First 15 minutes in I’m digging it and hoping this is great … but once the cast start acting - the movie is sucks… out into space
Whoa whoa whoa...nearly EVERY large corporation behaves the exact same way Disney does (re: allergy lawsuit). The first thing you do as a company is insulate yourself against lawsuits as best you can.
The underwater scenes in Creature from the Black Lagoon actually featured another actress/stuntwoman named Ginger Stanley. Absolutely gorgeous. Also, they released the 3D version on Blu-ray a couple years back as part of the second volume of the Universal Monsters 4K set. 100% worth watching if you still have a tv that can do 3D
People are saying this is the best alien movie 🤦♂️ There is just nothing of substance. All the previous films had a theme/identity (film 1 was slasher. Film 2 was war. Prometheus was philosophy driven, etc). This is just a mixture of member berries 🤷♂️
I'm surprised with all the Alien love that Dan O'Bannon gets ignored again. He met HR Giger while working on Jodorowsky's Dune adaptation, and conceived the first film with Ronald Shusett. He was the one that introduced Giger's work to Ridley Scott, and wrote the script that future drafts jumped on. He was seen as a pest to certain members of production, but Scott was willing to listen and implement when needed.
Why didn't they simply do the story of people of the space colony being sent to the alien "space jockey" ship on LV-426 like they said in Aliens? Simple and to the point. The only problem with doing a movie like this between Alien and Aliens is that it could potentially destroy the plot of Aliens. If the company knew this all along then they would have handled it differently without the marines and without Ripley to keep it hidden. Them knowing goes against everything in Aliens which is predicated upon nobody knowing about the aliens or what happened to maintain the element of suspense and horror. And basically if they had just done that with the colonists finding the Aliens, that would have perfectly captured the horror and suspense the franchise is known for, leaving what the corporation knew up in the air.
You mean the scene in Aliens Special Edition which shows the family at the derelict and starting the infestation of Hadley's Hope? It's been done already.
Id I remember right, Aliens started by saying there is a human colony somewhere and Ripley suspects the aliens have "infected" them and you see a few of them in the Aliens' webs in Aliens. I don't understand why they did not do a movie showing all the families, all the people that were in these colonies. And then showing the aliens start attacking. Also the people who sent them don't have to know they were aliens there. It's basically Ripley that figure that. Paul Reiser could be a small group few people that knew it.
50:57 - They should have just adapted Alien Isolation. It’s the best Alien content - movie or game - we’ve gotten since Aliens. Aliens Vs Romulans looks like a house built on member berries and CW pretty faces.
Wan was also supposedly eyeing a version of "Cthulhu". So was Del Torro. Del Torro also wanted "Creature from the Black lagoon". I wonder if they made a switch. We might get a Del Toro version of "Cthulhu" after all.
Why Alien: Romulus has so many boosters on UA-cam is baffling. As Mr. Gore, a refreshingly honest and very knowledgeable critic, points out, the film does not work owing to a cast that is far too young to carry a big Hollywood production. Another big problem is that two English actors were cast who just mumble in cockney and, as a result, are almost incomprehensible. That's not cool or authentic but just annoying. The result is that the characters are completely devoid of any charisma or heft. So you couldn't care less what happens to them. The plot was just a rehash of what we have seen in previous Alien films. The only positives are that the film looks great and Mr Alvarez put a lot of care into making the film. But his script and his cast are entirely unconvincing.
That was my fear from the first trailer. The cast was instantly repellent, for the reasons you stated. I actually turned to my wife and said aloud, “Why can’t they find adults to cast?” The Alien universe, surely, is one place where Hollywood can get away with casting middle-aged normal looking grunts. It’s a universe about rough people in rough circumstances. But no. We get the youth brigade in Alien and the nursing home in Borderlands. Hollywood baffles me.
@@everythingflows3196 It seems that since the late 2010s, Hollywood is largely incapable of delivering quality entertainment. This was just a cynical 20th Century Fox cash grab.

First act is fine, third act is fine. Bad CGI, yes, but whatever. Could have just used an actual actor, and would have been the better for it, but doesn't ruin the movie.

My brain just mushed that with some other anecdotes from that section, about the Cannes film festival and writing drafts of Star Wars, my bad 😬
All the fans saying Tony Scott was better than Ridley Scott are out of their freaking mind. Tony was a disciple of Jerry Brukenheimer for crying out loud. And it's much better. There are CGI elements that are not finished but if you can get past that, you're gonna see something close to a good movie.
Totally disagree on the rating. This is easily the third best in the franchise. Everything since ALIENS has had character and story problems, and disappointing third (if not first) acts. This fits the franchise started by the first two better than any of its other predecessors. 7/10

This was the least spoilery Chris gore has ever done. Meaning he only ruined the first act, a surprise Easter egg, and gave away the ending and who survives. The second act remains a total mystery.
Saw alien Romulus trailer in the theater and i didnt recognize any of rhe actors nor was i scared or felt any kind of tenseness during the trailer, pass
The best acting, performance and lines come from someone who’s not even real - that tells you all you need to know about the cast and their acting ability. Having just watched this I’m going to do what you all better off doing - watch Alien and Aliens and skip this instalment
Look the entire idea of anymore Alien movies is foolish. When Dan O'Bannon created the first film he based it off of things like the idea of cosmic terror as created by Lovecraft. It is like one of his stories. Only instead of the Elder Gods coming to Earth we go out to them. The entire idea is never reveal too much, never overuse it and never ,never explain too much. The mystery dies every time that's done. And when the mystery dies so does the scariness of the Alien. This is something that every film after Aliens has forgotten. Cameron was the only one that got this. Even Scott himself has completely forgotten. Now the Aliens are just a joke, especially after trash like the AVP films. Now they are everywhere. Everyone sees them. They are common place now. The mystery is gone. It's just another old mans franchise like Star Wars or Star Trek or The Terminator ECT. Only dug up every so often for nostalgia points because they can't do anything else.
Yeah, aliens was a genre shift but as you said, it was because Cameron was intelligent enough to realise the mystery horror needs was dead, better to pivot into action
Chris, you're so wrong about this movie. It's an easy 8 out of 10 and it's the 3rd best Alien movie out of the bunch. Great practical effects, pretty good story with some flawsand the young actors were pretty good, seriously. So crazy you dislike the movie this much, so much that you put Aliem Resurrection ahead of it.
I think Fede Alvarez is totally overrated. He was no Sam Raimi and he is no Ridley Scott. His characters are as boring and unsympathetic as his characters in the Evil Dead remake. You are not invested in them and when they die in the movies you could care less. The only movie of him i quite enjoyed what Don't Breathe because of the actors. They did a really good job. Even if Jane Levy played in both movies her role in Evil Dead was just bad.
Chris is becoming the Armond White of this space. I found his takes on Twisters (with his obnoxious “Kate” criticism), and over praise of MaXXXine (which the overall consensus of fans of X and Pearl was that it was very mediocre) to be waaay off the mark. I’m sure his take on Romulus will be the inverse of general audience consensus as well.
why does the "review" start with a story breakdown? Just tell us what you thought of it and then those who want to have the story spoiled can sit in for that.

Was not the Shape of Water the remake?
Chris nails this movie with his review looking forward to the spoiler review as there’s so much not to like about this movie
You couldn't pay me to watch this movie
What movie? 😉
I actually really enjoyed Romulus.
Gen Z bites it at the hand of the alien … cool. I may watch it.
1:00:11 Wrong Alan, Aliens beats the first Alien movie.
Lmao guess I'm a "normie"😂
I think Fede Alvarez is totally overrated. He was no Sam Raimi and he is no Ridley Scott. His characters are as boring and unsympathetic as his characters in the Evil Dead remake. You are not invested in them and when they die in the movies you could care less.
The only movie of him i quite enjoyed what Don't Breathe because of the actors. They did a really good job. Even if Jane Levy played in both movies her role in Evil Dead was just bad.
Loved it! Wow, just saw it in imax, wow
Why should anyone follow trends and consensus' when giving a take on a movie? It's personal taste, and Chris has NEVER pushed his opinion as bond.
why does the "review" start with a story breakdown? Just tell us what you thought of it and then those who want to have the story spoiled can sit in for that.
Sounds like Chris really hated it and it’s what I was dreading from an Alien movie from Disney. It’s woke BS.
He just immigrated here a year ago and is still learning English please do not be racist.
@@SUPREMELEGEND he's actually dyslexic and uses a special font to read which he probably can't use to read articles. Don't lie about stuff just to try and turn it into a race thing.
@@SUPREMELEGEND no he didn't, I replied explaining why he struggles with his reading sometimes but it seems to have been removed. Don't spread false information
Alan was born blind but he was blessed to be part of the Mr. Beast experiment and was given the gift of sight but he is still adjusting that’s why he has trouble reading
bafta/paris Olympics are related but do not the "same" things. actors or actresses. the "non binary" self label do NOT negate reality. the misdirection or rather desperately seeking attention and undeserved differentiation is truly annoying. the main but not only critical criteria in movies is to be good and not happened off screen, unless it is seriously serious and not flights of social delusions. you could be a garden snail but if you can do hamlet tickets will be sold and the french have to give up things on their menu.
ok vague review ...be honest chris does this movie get your stamp of approval or shall i save my money 53 yr old person who knows good movies
Chris AGAIN with the spoilers, telling who the Android is...Dude can't help himself. Thankfully, I don't think anyone cares about this movie.
It's not even a surprise anymore though, is it?? Like, it's paint by numbers now.
I think Alien 4: Resurrection is the worst and that's with Sigourney and Winona Ryder, super generic and is basically Deep Blue Sea with xenomorphs in feel and style. Awful cgi that last alien hybrid omfg
Soooo Alien Resurrection "copies" a movie that came out 2 years later?.... Sigh....
@@alejandromolinac ok Im maybe mixing it with something else and even if I wasn't, even being on the same level as Deep Blue Sea is bad no matter which came first.
Why say spoiler free when you can't shut up about it
This movie was horrible the alien only killed 3 people in alien Romulus f this movie
aliens is good. all other alien movies suck.
Alien is still the best film in the franchise
@@brandonm4550 70s horror garbage.
Alan, bitching and moaning.... follow Gore and all will be well.
Besides, it's good to stand out and have some production value. Look at John Campea, even though nobody can stand him. He has really good production for his show.
What they need is someone behind the scenes putting up the articles and posters leaving them just to talk
Which character from the first movie makes a cameo? I’m okay with spoilers
The android. I forget his name.
