    Earlier R.871 Video: • Tri-ang Running Sessio...
Hello again, after last weeks video I decided to find a Maroon Coronation, R.871 from the collection to examine and run. This very clean loco had a couple of faults to resolve before it was fit to do some running. It also gets to try out the Ball Raced 5 Pole X04 motor I built. Thanks for looking, I look forward to your comments

It is great to find an old model loco, and, with a bit of time, getting it to perform as well as you have done, I think that sometimes, when a model, or other item, gets damaged in a way that this one had done, it might save that model from excessive use and keep it in otherwise good condition. Anyhow, thank you for the video, and excellent work on this model. Looking forward to some Aston videos!

I totally agree, sometimes a faulty item is just tried and then stowed away, free from wear and tear. A great preservative. All the best to you

Fantastic upload Mr S. a practical demonstration of how well your ball-raced armature operates. of note is the quiet running that can be an issue with these hollow locomotive bodies.

I really noticed a drop in noise level with this one too. These models are usually quite noisy as are the Battle of Britain class. All the best to you

The ball race conversion is definitely the way to go, what a difference it makes. I haven't done any of mine yet but they will get done. These locos are such a unique shape, I find it takes me a while to get used to them and they look very sleek when in motion. 😊

I must say I actually like the blue version most but the maroon item certainly has a great look. Thanks for watching, all the best to you

The motor change certainly made a great difference. The loco is in fabulous condition very shiny indeed, hope you clean the oil out of the yellow tray before putting it back. It will be interesting to see your diagnostic on the old motor and how you restore it to full glory. I also look forward to the Aston Martin repairs.
    All the best, cheers Rob.

A good point raised about cleaning the tray, I will sort that. The motor will be sorted out soon and I need some more spare time on the old car, I don't know where the hours go. Best regards to you

What a lovely model you have. The body work looks in almost as new condition.
Shame the original X.04 motor needs work.
She certainly does run well with your modified 5 pole motor on your Super 4 layout. 👍
I must see if I can find one of these too.
    Thanks for sharing.

Nice one Mr S. My 3-rail Silver King was running beautifully but gave up this weekend . It must’ve done some miles because the armature is well and truly worn out. I swapped it out for one from a 2-rail City of London which I purchased recently. I’ve no 2-rail layout at the moment so it doesn’t really need it. The old one has gone off for reconditioning and both will be reunited with their locomotives once it gets back!
As I don’t have a remagnetiser (I’m trying to find plans to build one myself - if you know of such a thing I’d be grateful), but in the meantime I’m experimenting with neodymium cube magnets. Have you any experience with these? 2 x 7mm cube magnets seem to work well in the Dublo motors fitted with the 9 x 9 x 14mm magnet, but I do wonder if I’m risking anything long term by fitting them. I’d be grateful for your thoughts on the subject. Robin

Hello, I have experimented adding small neo magnets as a booster to some locos and good results are possible. As mentioned, Ronalds tool for remagnetizing is excellent and I have one that I use regularly. Best regards to you

@@MrSnooze yes i really need a remagnetizer, but I just can’t justify the expense to the domestic authorities, which is why I’m trying to find plans so I can build one myself.

Snooze: Presumably the ball races act with radial thrust; I keep wondering how the longitudinal thrust is taken? Most likely the assumption is that with our loadings the forces are safe to ignore??????? To be worth the screwdriver time to set up, there would have to be significant saving in friction and wear.
Nice to see someone enjoying it all, and even better to see a 'new' loco with change from 6 pounds.
A clock man like you , who can effortlessly line bore a Brush II bogie could equip this loco with single start worm, and do it with one hand. How about It?
Will be interesting to see how that motor scrubs up.
With T/H carriages with plastic white line wheels and sometimes metallic tyres, have you had a problem with the wheels slipping out of the bearings, and the sloppy fit causing wear? Yours seem to run fairly well.
    Enjoy.
    Pete

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Рік тому

Hello, these small ball races totally control the longitudinal thrust with them being an interference fit to the motor casing and the shaft being the same too. Care has to be taken with the fitting of the worm. Single start worms is a subject that has been bought up with one person spending much time experimenting, I'm looking forward to hearing how he has got on. The white lined wheels and silver seal items can wear out bearings. In extreme cases I fit brass pinpoint inserts but it's not required that often. Thanks for watching, take care, all the best to you

@@MrSnooze Thanks for that Snooze, though to be thoroughly dishonest I had to read through crododile tears over the lack of my tree!
Interesting response; many thanks. Shall write to you properly over wheels one day, but not as a comment: there has been a shift to new specs which should not work with the old specs, and it's never mentioned. Wheels and track standards comprise a system. The man who told me that is a prototype engineer working on track. He is amazed at what he sees n the model world.
Excepting my 'tree', I always worry about taking up your time: thanks again.
