That's one way to do it. I personally just went for it and bought a shit bike for $1000 with no research whatsoever. I learned a ton during that first year and had a blast. (didn't die)
Getting my bike. Finally. 45 and getting off the back and getting my own. I LOVE your videos. Thank you for your style!! Love ya Yam Can’t wait to get that wind therapy. Ride safe.
Moto fit is absolutely critical! Probably THE most important part of choosing a bike. There are many bikes I like, but only a few that fit me well and comfortably. And those are what I ride.
I've been riding since I was 17 when I fixed up an 83 VT750C Honda Shadow. Some years later I got a Honda Sabre 1100C, a KLR650, rode a Harley Dyna for a while, then got a Harley Nightster (My favorite Harley I've ever ridden), then got a Suzuki Drz400S, and now have a Kawasaki Vulcan S (Most fun I've ever had on a cruiser). Point is, I've been riding for years and yet I still am so entertained by your videos, I still watch your beginner videos haha. Keep up the quality content brother.
Hello there.. I have been watching you for awhile and now my 12 year old son has started to watch you and is asking for me to take him on my bike when the summer comes all I can say is THANKYOU!! Its something I have wanted since I started to ride..and he is even talking about bikes saying he wants to get a dirt bike to try and ride!!! Anyways keep the great videos coming!!
Great video. Great advice even for an old guy who stopped riding when kids were little only to start again when my son started riding motorcycles. Just like your suggestion I found a used FZ6 that could pay cash for and after riding it for a couple of years I decided I wanted a new bike with traction control and ABS. I then bought a new left over 2017 V-Strom 650. It is a great fit for the type of riding I want to do, plus at the discounted price I was still able to pay cash for it. Stay safe and have a happy New Year.
This could be my favorite Yam-Vid! No offense, but you really sound like a mature professional offering well-reasoned advice for new riders! Thank you for all your work, but especially this one!
I was introduced to the motorcycle culture by a fellow professional photographer with whom I share a studio. He had started at 25 and I was 45. The first thing he told me was "Do the safety course." He had been the President of a Harley Club" but was riding Triumph sports bikes and a 500cc Ninja for track. I thought I could trust him. He never told me anything that could get e killed.
As well as the excellent information in this video there are a few other things to consider when buying your first bike... Can you afford to buy it? Can you afford to run it? Bikes need maintenance more often than cars. Very similar bikes can have wildly different running costs. How much for a pair of tyres? How much is a chain and sprocket set? How much for a service? If this will be your first bike at some point YOU WILL DROP IT. It is worth asking at the dealership how much some commonly damaged parts will cost to replace - Indicators Foot pegs Clutch and brake levers Handlebars Gear shift and rear brake pedal Screen (if fitted) Fairing (if fitted) - N.B. fairings can be eye-wateringly expensive to replace! If the guy in the dealership can't (or won't) give you this information go find another dealership. There are plenty out there.
Just got my first bike. 1993 yamaha xj600 converted to a naked bike. Being a standard bike its easy to ride on for a while. Its light, has a 599cc bike so insurance is cheaper, very reliable, and it handles well. Highly reccomend this bike to anyone looking. They usually list for around $1500 in running condition
I went the dealer route, and depending on what you get you can get a good deal. I saw a brand new 2015 CB500F that the dealer wanted out (I bought it in 2017). I bought in February (off-season) and saved almost $1000 on it. I also traveled 4 hours to get it.
Got my used 2016 CBR500R this past summer for literally half what it would've cost me new and it even came with a few essential mods on it already (fender eliminator, flush turn signals). Used is definitely the way to go with bikes imo.
Early comment! Also good point about helmets. Don't buy expensive cause it looks cool, buy whatever fits your head. I like the Lord and Savior Rossi designs on AGV helmets but they don't fit my massive eurosnob head all that well. So i bought Arai because it has the best customisable padding on the market.
Great video Yamms. I'd add that it's great to seek out a long-time rider and get their input on what you should buy based on your interests. My barber is the ultimate bike veteran and he really helped me find my way into riding.
I'd say just keep an open mind when looking. I have the issue of looking at something and falling in love. Center stands are super useful and it's nice to not have to deal with fairings
I just recently bought my first motorcycle. I got an 2002 Honda Shadow A.C.E 750. So far it's been great for me to learn on and I wish I would have gotten a bike sooner.
#10: find the nearest VFW or biker bar and ask the polite gentlemen inside if you could possibly join their social club. They will always be welcoming and helpful to new riders, especially if you’re riding either a Sportster or a Japanese brand. Inviting them to brunch will seal your friendship in stone.
You, I just checked Craigslist for street bikes for sale (noob rider here) and within 50 miles of where I live there were at least six (6) Hayabusas listed. I couldn’t help but 😂. Goddamned ‘busas!
The No.1 thing to do with your 1st motorcycle is to treat is a your toothbrush. Dont let anyone use it. (unless they are experienced) Chances are, if its your first bike, your friends are not squid-bike-owners themselves but they will still want to ride it... and they *will* go down with it. UA-cam is full with this kind of videos.🤣😂
Great vid Cummy Pube! Looking towards getting my first bike some time in the new year and all the tips and tricks are great to help me decide on what to do and get, consider myself subbed.
Be patient and buy "Run-Out" models..The impatient buy & pay full retail at the start of the year, the smart ones wait till the end and grab the left overs 😉
I watch as i decide if a fresh fit of flip flops would send my Evel Knievel shorts, wife beater and 5yr old modular to the next level in riding gear. It all looks good on my ZH2se. Let the good times roll.
Rhode Island requires the MST course to get a permit. Then the license. They’re offered at the state’s community college system. It costs $125. But then, they have two more advanced courses FOR FREE.
I’m waaaaay too lazy to look it up, but I watch your content, and you seem like a hard working guy, so...I look forward to the video you make about the difference between getting your license in the U.S. compared to Europe. I could just google that shit, but you know, all that typing...
Be careful for what you wish for! I'm 36 and when I was 12 I said the exact same thing and BOOM!!! "A few years later" I'm just now attempting to get one. Life is faster than you think.
Concerning the Motorcycle safety courses, a video on that one would be terrifyingly great. As a European, i have no idea what or how they teach you to ride across the Atlantic
Rumor has it that biker dude is pumping out some quality content... I don't yet own a bike but you are keeping my dream alive, one day soon my turbo-busa loving senpai
Well, I bought my first bike straight from the catalogue. Turned out I was a tad too short for it...after 20 years, I still do not like it entirely. Decided to get a replacement...but she is so beautiful!
In the U.K. the safety course is called cbt. compulsory basic training which allows you ,at the age of 16 to ride a 50cc moped where as in America at 16 you can ride an R6. 🤔🤔🤔 is anyone else seeing something😂😂
Hey yam master. I know you get a million comments and I hope this one finds you. Just wanted to let you know in had an accident in March l, almost lost my leg. Had good surgeons and free health care in Canada but I spent a lot of time in the hospital and I loved your videos. They got me through some shitty times sitting by my lonesome in a hospital bed. End of story thanks brotato chip. Keep up the great work!
The helmets reminded me of what I saw last summer when I saw someone riding past my school on his motorcycle. Sandals, shorts, tank top and a BICYCLE helmet.....prepare of the slide not the ride.
Hey-dere, Papa Yam! Here's me: WAS ~600 lbs, had 1st half of experimental GB surgery in late '05, then 2nd half in early '06. When I was at ~250 lbs. the Wife said she, ". . . wouldn't mind if I got another bike." After I picked myself up off the ground, asked her who she was & what she did with my Wife, I went home & started my search! 😆 Spent time. . . on forums, at dealerships with salesmen AND Techs, around guys I knew (& didn't know) with bikes, read, read, & read some more. Talked to my ins. guy, brand specific "Specialist Tech Shops", friends, co-workers, anybody who had any type of opinion on M/C's. After MORE THAN A YEAR of working to figure it out, I settled on the Suzuki Bandit line of bikes. 400? 600? 1200? 1200s? What year? What color? What condition? Price-point? (MORE that still needed to be figured out!?!). It was an adventure! I settled on the 2005 GSF1200s Bandit, not too old, not too new, low miles, no "salvage", with ZERO mods (so: 1] no amateur, half-assed, screwed-up work & 2] I could make her "my own"). 2005 was also the only year with a "paint scheme" of dk blu/wht/lt blu, to celebrate their racing efforts, so she'd already be unique. I was so set on THAT year/color/model that I was looking at bikes STATES AWAY & even started bying matching gear, like soft luggage in blue. While searching, I did my MSF course & got my "M" classification back, kept working out, continued to lose, and collected my gear. Yep, all geared up for EVERY ride (besides. . . I look really cool in my gear, man!). Ended up, my local dealer (where I hung out, asked ?'s, sat on alot of bikes & bought a fair amount of gear), went & found my baby for me. I bought her, they winterized her, stored her, got her ready in the spring, & on 4/1/08 I took her -home- out for a LONG ride until dusk. I even went on a 600 mile trip, less than a month after homecoming, JUST after new tires! 2019 will be my 11th season with "Ellie", here in the far. . . FAR NW suburban area outside Chicago, IL up by the "Cheddar Curtain" (WI border). Thanks for the humor, the info, & the nifty optics in your vids, Papa Yam. Keep it up.
You should defenitly make a video about the motocyle license system in Europe. And also all the restrictions for the bikes. In Germany you have to pay a lot of money if, for example just your turn signals are not e-certified, or your mirrors are to small
Importantly, if you finance the bike, you will likely have to go fully comprehensive with the insurance which could be super painful for a new rider. Buy outright for cash and you have the option of much cheaper cover. Can you afford a stupid drop? Particularly bad is it it's on a lease or hire-purchase agreement with a hefty penalty for any cosmetic damage so you end up having to invoke insurance over something otherwise trivial
I grabbed a rebel 250 for a grand on Craigslist. I rode it every day from the day I got it in mid August to December. Now it's sitting outside under a cover to get sold in March. So I can buy a Suzuki Vstrom
Papa Noob.....would you make a video for US riders considering riding in a foreign country? Like Ireland, Greece, Japan, Australia...what should be my expectations and what legal hoops would need to be jumped through? If you are interested that is. (You should still be thanking that helmet too brother. That wreck was wicked and you were lucky - in all three actually.)
10. Don't listen to idiots that say small bikes are lame. Have seen too many new riders jump on way too much bike and never have fun and interest eventually fades, Or they go down trying to be on a level they are not at yet.
It's not that I don't agree but it's not that black and white. I'm in UK and you've got to be 24 to ride whatever power bike you want. You have to go through a course and a series of tests on a bike with roughly 70HP (you can't do it on anything smaller as it's against the rules to getting your full licence). So once you've done the 5 days and passed the 2 tests you aren't going to then go and get yourself a smaller bike than what you've done all your training on? It just doesn't really happen. They might get something slightly smaller but very few drop down to a 300-400cc or something like that.
My love dies every time a UA-camr spends the first 45 seconds begging for people to "click the bell". You if you want to see if there are new videos, just look at the "Subscription" menu. It's the default screen when i open UA-cam. And i don't have to have bells and whistles bug me all day and night. Which equals happy me 😁
What about the guys that are riding on the "DarkSide" and using a car tire for a rear wheel? They say that the tire lats a lot longer, is much cheaper, and does not effect handling in dry or wet conditions.
whenever he mentions that he knows we watch his video while taking a dump I feel called out
if you listen to dubstep while taking a dump it sounds like brown noise and helps you evacuate the sphinx quicker

I just bought a 2001 Yamaha FZ1000. $850.00 Needs a little carb work. Have not been on a bike since the mid 90s.
Could you please make a video on a brand new Motorcycle Pre Delivery Inspection ?
Which equals happy me 😁
love the Porsche references had me in bits tbh
Arai should be paying yammie for all the customers who saw that he some how fucking survived and were like “ok yeah I want that helmet”
What about the guys that are riding on the "DarkSide" and using a car tire for a rear wheel? They say that the tire lats a lot longer, is much cheaper, and does not effect handling in dry or wet conditions.
This video was very good. It has a lot of useful information.
That was my MSF Coach at Harley in this video.
I'm 15 and I have already researched and made a list of bikes I'd like to buy...
Hey Tammie! Here's a crazy idea, why not make a video in the form of a list for beginner riders?
Just start with a h2r it's the best 125cc scooter you can start with
Shit. If my feet had to be flat on the ground, about the only bike I could ride is a yz80
Grom
Wheel Trouble get taller
Kawasaki Z125 or Honda Grom is small.
Yeah, not taking a grom down the interstate... Gabba might be on the right track. Anybody know where I can find a medieval rack?
I have to say the ninja 650 is a beginner bike that you truly grow into. Have you ever owned a Kawasaki?
anyone else shit themselves at 7:01 X-D, glad yammie knew we'd all be on the toilet when we watched lol
My first bike was a yamaha yzf r6
