Really appreciate you sharing this knowledge. It's super helpful and a reminder there's so much that goes into running a business. Sharing with my designer friends, a bunch of them have adjusted during Covid and are trying to start their own thing. Funny enough you're videos are a topic of discussion in our group chat at times!
Hi Adrian, I just want to say thank you for making this video and for answering my inquiry. This really made my day 🙂 It is very helpful and informative. It made me realize that there are a lot to consider when designing, especially the difference between making something as an inspiration or reference vs copying it. It also gave me a lot of insights about what the term copyright really is. I look forward to more videos like this 🙂👍🏼 cheers!
Maybe the question has been answered, but what if you're creating designs to post on social media platforms to market or bring attention to your own work? Do you have to copyright each and every design along with every fee?
Can you speak on if a client provides the copy for a piece, but all the designs are original to designer, does the finished piece’s copyright go to designer?
Curious how you handle intellectual property with design materials beyond logos? I have clients who want not only the the final PDF or a brochure or other materials, but ALSO the working files? I feel there should be a separate charge for the working files as that is my IP. How do you determine pricing for those and, in sharing the working files, are you putting yourself out of business?
I work as a designer for a company as a salary earner, and I don't have an agreement that says all my designs belong to them. Each time I create a design I try as much as possible not to infringe on peoples work. But my boss always wants me to use copyright images (stock photos), and he wouldn't give attribution in the comment section on socials after posting, he won't. Secondly he asks me to send .PSD or .CRD of my works so that he can use it for print purposes, and I am not comfortable with the fact that someone else will have my work as a template on their device. What can I do?
This is a more complicated question. If you are employed by them you technically are designing for hire and they own the copyright. Id work out a different arrangement with them and tell them that if they want the native files and want to own the copyright that you need to be paid additionally for that release.
I was not clear on your comment about attributing. It sounded to me like you were saying you could use something from someone that you are editing, but to give attribution. True, or not?
Thank you for this great information, Adrian. I just pulled up the link and intend to copyright a piece of art right now!

Definitely need-to-know info. Makes me think about how copyrighting applies to web work. 🤔
Absolutely, super important to know that all the copy you write, layouts you design, and graphics created are your copyright.
What about fonts? If i use a font or letter form a brand is it possible without any issue?

You should always attribute the artist unless you have full commercial license.
Great info!
