This is true, many graphic design jobs didn’t give me much freedom to express my artistic and visual creativity. It was more so simplicity, downloading images, font, and creating little to no change to templates. I am more of an graphic artist/2D animator.
im a graphic design student currently, but thinking like an artist all the time, the good thing abt graphic design was you can gain profit on your own but the negative abt graphic design is not a place for u to create art, everything u do will be based on the clients needs, so i guess I'm in the struggle track.

Thank you! I'm starting a pillow case business and I take elements and put together a theme on my cases. I'm still a little confused on to what to call my self. I think..Graphic Designer?? For example..I'm on Canva alot and will start with an element like a heart and then I think of what to add with it..so I place a key with the heart then I placed a angel inside the heart and so on...that becomes my design and I also took a vintage truck and then I think about what elements to put with the truck.. so I add a vintage lady, a old sign for a barn sale, and a vintage ticket to get into the barn sale etc.....It actually turned out pretty good. I'm new at this but love love it! I work full time as a Nurse but have been considering a different career path. I'm basically trying to turn hobby into a business. I can't afford to go back to school for Graphics so I'm teaching myself. I decorate pillow case covers with elements. Kinda like and interior designer decorating a room,I decorate pillows. I'd say I am a graphic designer, because I can't draw for shit. But I am trying to learn more about drawing. Also this does not mean I do not have a ton to learn about design. :') Dragos.
I agree with some of it and disagree with some more, i guess the first part of that answer should be defining what is an artist and what is a designer, on that matter you would have to define what is art and what is design, both are extremely tricky and subjective concepts. The market take on that is that design is art as a service or serving a practical use because art is intrinsically useless, that is a questionable affirmation because it invalidates both the useless design (like decorations or the visual appeal of architecture) and the utilitary art (like artistic utensils and the entertainment industry), at this point it's impossible to find a way to differentiate graphic art from graphic design, rendering the existence of both terms "useless" or making one of them just an artistic performance of identity. But i personally would try another route, i would go the simple way and compare: what is the purpose of graphic design? Reproduction, it's about flyers, cards, posters, magazines and etc. made to be reproduced extensively for commercial and informational purposes. So independently of what "art" means in your own paradigm the definition of graphic art would be: art to be reproduced, art that uses the graphic design medium of creation and presentation, artistic posters and flyers and cards and magazines that are necessarily or not created to be commercial or informational, but are intentionally used as an art medium, carrying some form of art in it.
That may be so but it's one of the most searched questions, hence why i created it. I appreciate the feedback though and value your decades of experience.

Little of both, still working on how this graphic designer works. What I found: is that with comics/comic books, it's a little of both.
