I can excuse the UED for recruiting local armies. I can excuse Arturus, Jimmy, and Fenix falling for Kerrigan's lies. I can even explain the multiple Overminds and it being mind controlled.
I can't accept Stukov being betrayed and the whole Raznagal thing.
By the way, you didn't expect the bonus mission because it was never on PC before. If you had StarCraft 64 and the expansion pack for the system you could access it. Bizarre, I know.
Also, the photograph synopsis didn't exist before.

A few notes on the story that you might have overlooked.
When it comes to the part where the protoss are willing to hear Kerrigan out on out on shakuras.
    1. You have the benefit of hindsight here, since you know what will happen. We don't know at this point what happened to kerrigan once the overmind died. I think it's not unreasonable at all to assume she might have changed when she's no longer being mind controlled by a huge evil brain blob.
2.Even if you disagree with that that. Zeratul trusts Raszagal and for good reason. The have known each other for millennia. The reason Raszagal is so trusting of kerrigan is because she's being mind controlled by kerrigan from the very start of broodwar. (this is heavily implied by Aldaris right before Kerrigan kills him)
But yes I also think Zeratul and Artanis are a bit naive here. Also they never nuked Aiur, it was just completely overrun by zerg.
As for the UED. I think it's implied that DuGalle is an arrogant prick who genuinely thought he could defeat the zerg without the psi disruptor.
I for one love the broodwar story. I feel like you think these characters have good reason to mistrust kerrigan when in lot of cases they really don't they have no idea what she's like without the control of the overmind.
I think another big part of sc1 and BW is the fact that there's a lot left to the imagination. There's a lot that happens in between missions that we never see. I just implied most of that stuff which made the story work for me personally.
But the bottom line is that I don't think they had as be a reason to distrust Kerrigan as you think.
Sorry for the ramble, but that's why the BW story works for me, great video!

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this. Even though I disagree with certain points, I agree with your sentiment. I'll do my best at replying to each point.
      1. Absolutely, I guess I come from it from a historical view point; that even though you could be indoctrinated, it doesn't make you less of an evil person. I feel like Kerrigan, no matter what her motives or actions were based on, should never of even been in the conversation, when the Zerg are a force so destructive, it will take over the galaxy. I guess my thought is, I would be full firebat on any semblance of zerg.
      2. That's what made me angry, is that Zeratul has known her, and he even comments about how she doesn't seem to be herself, but never questions that Kerrigan was on the dark templar planet while they're there? (or is that wrong, I can't remember), anyways, if your friend started talking about burning worlds down, when for 1000 plus years, they've been a nomadic tribe in the shadows, i don't know, I would be hesitant.
      3. I love that, and never thought of that while writing the script. It might be one of the reasons why I love this series so much, is that even though for all its amazing specific designs and art styles, it does give a lot to the imagination; I'm assuming this and Ghost in a Shell are my main reasons for loving sci-fi.
      4. Never apologize for writing your thoughts, that's part of this channel, is to have discussion and talk through subjects and topics in a calm/collected way, with the focus on our experiences and memories, which are our own, and should be shared.
Thank you again for taking the time to write this. I truly appreciate it, and hope this finds you well.

I'm really grateful for the reply! great to hear your thoughts, here are my thoughts.
1.it's beyond indoctrination, the overmind explains this in the original campaign (Zerg mission 5 briefing). "Fear not for she is bound to me as intimately as any cerebrate. truly, no zerg can stray from my will" this is why I feel that what kerrigan did in the original campaign has no bearing what so ever on her character in broodwar. She's not just indoctrinated, she is being straight up mind controlled by the overmind.
It turns out that even with the overmind gone she's still evil but Artanis and Zeratul had no way of knowing that. For all we know (at that point in the story) she could have gone back to her original human personality.
2.Raszagal never burns down planets. The worst things she does are 1.Nuking Shakuras which was the only way to save it. Zeratul even says as much before the final mission (Protoss campaign mission 8 briefing). 2.Ordering the assassination of Aldaris, which considering what we know of Aldaris from the first game doesn't seem that unreasonable. It is believable that he turned back to his old ways.
I grew up with these games, these characters are my childhood heroes so I'm very biased. I will however say that your point that Broodwar is mostly about setting up double-crosses rings very true. Never realized it before you pointed it out.
At the end of the day what stories we like and don't are 100% subjective, and I will always love the Broodwar story and you are free to dislike it. I do however think there's more nuance to it than you give it credit for.
Thanks agian for the great points you brought up in your video!

@@robinolander5533 fantastic, I truly appreciate your candor and writing. Your thoughts and commentary ring true and I see your side as well. I love this interaction because you're completely right when talking about subjectivity; and having the perspective to view it with other's lenses is a powerful experience.
I never really thought of it as mind control because she had that tendency to say things that I felt were her "human" side showing, or free will. Yet, with your view, her free will is actually an illusion, and that the overmind is truly in control. Wild stuff and truly stuff to think about for contemporary history; should indoctrination of an individual or lack of free will, give carte blanche to a person? Very interesting question, and something I want to use in my video game.
Thank you again for taking the time to write all this, and I hope this finds you well. Long live this game, this franchise, and our memories of it. En Taro Adun Robinolander.

Keep in mind that Zeratul was tortured by the fact he had to kill Raszagal. In the years that follow, he goes into exile in great part because of grief (he doesn't lead the Dark Templar as the Matriarch asked of him). His honor has been seriously damaged by this event, even if it was justified for him to kill his Queen.

around 9:36 You mention that Raszagal casually mentions that the Xel'Naga is progenitor race for all three factions. But I don't think she's saying that. She says: "We discovered that the enormous structure is actually an ancient Xel'Naga Temple, dedicated to the race that sired us all." Since she's talking to other Protoss (both those from the Aiur faction and those from the Dark Templar faction) I think "us all" means all the Protoss.

The level where you have to destroy the nukes or the psi for battle cruisers is such a hard choice, I love how I diverges to a second B story if you don't destroy the nukes, between battle cruisers or nukes, though if you don't destroy the nukes ironically you can get civilians which do nothing

I agree that sc1 can get kinda tedious due to restarting your base most of the time, but I think blizzard saw that too back in the day. Their next rts (warcraft 3) had missions where you come into a setup base with workers and basic buildings (supply, production, maybe some towers or upgrade buildings). You still had to restart researches on upgrades, but having that starting economy and production helped. Keeping your hero levels and items though was a nice touch to keep more feeling of progression too.

    There were two things that I had trouble grasping in the brood war story;
    1. What was the point of Tassadar sacrificing himself? The entire Protoss campaign in SC1 was a lead up to the death of the overmind, and then the just grow another a few days later? What the heck did we even accomplish?
    2. Why was Raynor and Phoenix so willing to attack the UED? They were the first Terrans to hurt the Zerg in a massive, permanent way, and made Arcturus's life a living hell. Raynor would have been shaking their hand, not shooting them in the head. It hurt doubly so when Kerrigan just got away with everything in the end. It felt like they betrayed humanity to the Zerg.

These are two fantastic questions. For 1 I think it’s that he can merge both sides of light and dark together, killing the overmind with powers not seen since xel naga.
      2) great question, I think they see them as same thing but different ( compared to the confederacy). No one wants to be ruled by a gigantic empire and the UED were the ones who sent raynor’s great grandfather out in the Korpulu sector in the first place. I wouldn’t want to work with them either.

    Great video! Loved it
While Brood War has its plot holes, there are A few points I'd like to make:
1: as for trusting Kerrigan, for starters, she claims she's not under the influence of the overmind anymore and they have no real reason to suggest otherwise, even Tassasar applauded Kerrigan on Char for her actions back when she was human. Also, the mind controlled Raszagal was a big factor in that as well, since her word carries a lot of weight within the Dark Templar (Nerazim). Artanis is very naive when it comes to this, but hes young by protoss standards so thats understandable. I think he's only like 300 and something years old, to like Tassadar's 800 and something when he died. And Zeratul does question Rasagal when she orders them to attack Aldaris, but she kind of waives them off. Kerrigan shows up and kills Aldaris because he knew the truth. My big problem with the protoss campaign is, when you're on Char, why not just outright kill the Overmind while you're there, Zeratul is obviously with you. Let him kill it, the UED plan is shot. And the whole story actually changes, instead, if you attack the overmind, it goes into remission, the mission ends, and the campaign continues as if you just went for the crystal instead.
2: The UED campaign is a mess tbh, the whole reason they accept Duran and his forces in the first place, is because the UED is conscripting everyone they can get their hands on for their war to begin with. And to his credit, if the Dominion managed to get a hold of the Psi Disruptor after they capture the Overmind, then they potentially have rampaging zerg within their own forces, it might not be the smartest move, but its not a dumb move. Its not out right states, but i like to believe that Duran, being the secret psychic entity he is, is subtely influencing Gerard to see his way, and its only Stukov's death that breaks him out of it. As for why they want to capture the Overmind, its the same reason the Confederacy designed psi emitters: to control the zerg and use them as weapons against their enemy. The UED is ultimately just as bad, if not worse than the Confederacy was. Thats kind of their whole point. My problem comes with the Warp Gate on Auir that they are trying to flee through, since they said in the Protoss campaign they were fleeing through the last functional warp gate and Raynor and Fenix trashed that one to prevent more zerg from coming to Shakuras
3: The Zerg Campaign to me is the best, Raynor and Fenix straight up hate working with Kerrigan and knows her betrayal is coming, but they don't have much of a choice. They just assumed they had more time until she betrayed them. They expected to fully defeat the UED before the betrayal. And Kerrigan's arrogance kind of stopped her from seeing Duran's suspicious nature about the protoss city. As for the Zeratul part, he straight goes into exile for years because of the events in this campaign. It takes a protoss preserver being stuck in a human's head to shake him from his depression and spur him to act, and even then, he's treated like a criminal by most of his people. Vorazun in StarCraft 2 straight hates Zeratul because Raszagal was her mother. Raszagal was the oldest of the Dark Templar, old enough to remember being sent out from Auir (though she was a child at the time) and the burden of having to kill her weighs heavily on Zeratul for a very long time

So, I totally hear you about the believing things from Kerrigan being stupid and believing things from duran being presented in a not-so-developed way. As a long time broodwar fan, I sort of brain-cannoned it like this:
Kerrigan mysteriously had some sort of psi powers that enabled her enthrall the Matriarch. She was a ghost that got infested and learned psi storm. A whole lot of hooblah went into the cultivation of her zergy essence. So I figured she had sort of a Hypnotic Gaze effect that could let her use mind control - basically like a dark archon. Basically, she was always overpowered and matriarch got mindcontrolled probably by use of a mind parasite off screen. After all, it's the matriarch's absolute authority that led to the downfall of the suddenly trusting Zeratul.
That was made worse by Duran being an inexplicable enigma. But he too seemed to have some sort of a charming gaze effect that could turn opinions around.

@@Dog.Dad.Studios Since you're still active with the comments about this video:
      1. Dugalle and the Psu Disruptor: Their goal is to tame the zerg by controlling the Overmind, in Dugalle's mind the Psi disruptor is a critical weakness in their plan because losing control of the device would allow for their enemies to cut off the Overmind from the zerg and basically cause all Zerg auxiliaries to go berserk. He underestimates the difficulty of assaulting char and of the Overmind's resistance to the neurostimm drugs. As we learn later the UED struggles to maintain control over the Zerg.
      2. Duran, Alexi, and Dugalle: It's subtle but during the Brood War Terran Campaign there's several moments when Duran uses his "infested" voice filter instead of his normal voice. This is notable when he says "Stukov's loyalties aren't as strong as you believe" which Dugalle first denies but when seeing evidence to the contrary (the Psi disruptor not being destroyed) he believes. This is because Duran is working to make Dugalle psychically pliant (yes, it's another mind control plot in Brood War). Duran was clearly a character they intended to build up over the campaigns (his strange knowledge on Protoss, his alliance with Kerrigan, the seeming human acting as both ally to UED and secret leader of Dominion labs) With all the hints together you can possibly deduce that Duran is one of the Xel'Naga that have been hinted at as far back as the original zerg campaign. If you didn't, then the secret mission spells it out. This was back when the Xel'Naga in general were more ambiguous as the greater evil than it all being dumped on the Amon plot.
      3. Aldaris, the Matriarch, Kerrigan: Others have touched on this so I'll be brief. It relies on two factors to work: the player's perceptions based off limited information and the ingame lore. The player at this point will have seen Kerrigan go full villain after being infested and yet she still spared Jim. After we hunt the Dark templar we basically don't see Kerrigan for the rest of the Zerg campaign. With the Overmind dead and her mind freed, we the player had no reason to believe she wouldn't revert to a closer to original Kerrigan personality. They build on this by having her actually engage in banter and discussion with the Protoss, in lore the Protoss have no context for what a freed infested Terran would be like. Aldaris plays a role in making this work, the player wouldn't be likely to care for him after his antagonistic role, they show that he might have changed at the start then have him seemingly regress right after Kerrigan shows up. This plays on the player's bias to respond emotionally and readily accept Aldaris is being a petty villain again rather than actually having a point that everyone is being naive. Kerrigan's Villanous nature is revealed but the full extant of her treachery is only hinted at.
      4. Jim, Fenix, and Mengsk: For the later UED missions and for the Zerg missions, we need to recall that the protoss here are all Khala Protoss/Templar under the command of Fenix, the survivors that stayed behind to guard the portal. Kerrigan as a cerebrate level psionic can control the berserk zerg and thus explains the survival of Jim and Fenix. They don't know what Kerrigan has been up to, but Jim and Fenix are under no illusions that she's changed. Infact Kerrigan doesn't try to deceive them, she simply makes it clear they don't have a choice in the matter. It's clear that Kerrigan has first been fighting the Cerebrates for control of the zerg but quickly changed her focus once the UED made their presence known. Realizing that she was going to lose control of the Zerg between Daggoth and the UED. She uses the terrans and protoss as her agents when they are in a position to be unable to deny her. Jim/Fenix have the join or die clause with the "UED are greater villains" as the carrot. Mengsk likewise is recruited once he loses his stronghold. No one except maybe Mengsk thinks Kerrigan will keep her word, Mangsk case it's probably more desperation than anything else.
Bonus: When Kerrigan helps the Protoss claim the first crystal, they actually destroy the UED landing party that was going to assault the Dominion base. Then the following mission you break their Blockade. The UED campaign basically has you start off on the backfoot as a result of those Protoss missions, because they're still trying to take Braxis. In a way, this helps justify why they were willing to take a chance with Duran, because their campaign was already stalling.
Bonus 2: Why is Korhal the capital of the Dominion: It's Mengsk's home world and Tarsonis is overrun by Zerg. Mengsk is actually portrayed as acting irrationally based off emotion on multiple occasions, he betrayed Kerrigan because she's the Ghost that the Confederacy had kill his mother, father, and sister. He went from a Confederate patriots and war hero to adopting the same secessionist views as his father but out of a motivation for revenge. He abandoned his lover and riled Korhal up into a frenzy and then his home world was completely destroyed, the survivors and his loyalists became the Sons of Korhal terrorist army/revolutionary group. By the Terran campaign (original) he had been so invested in his revenge that all he had was his lust for power and his new Dominon, his family was dead, his lover was dead, and his son grew up without him.
So tl;dr Korhal is the capital because it's Mengsk's home planet and he'll pretend it isn't just all dust and echoes now.

Furthermore, she was originally a human, and now no longer under control of the Overmind. @Dog.Dad.Studio, Ghost returning could be great. Unfortunately, most AAA game companies want live service focused stuff now, not single player focused games. I think Ghost was going to have an online mode that was similar to Command and Conquer Renegade's too.
Would've liked to see an M rated FPS from the perspective of a Terran Marine.
The N64 port is impressive, like RE2's N64 port. But, were these just done to see if they could actually pull them off? The PS1 was right there Blizzard. You had Warcraft 2 and Diablo 1 ported to PS1, but not Starcraft 1/BW!? EA brought early Command And Conquer games to PS1 just fine.
Heck, the PS2 launched the year the N64 port released. I don't get it...

So one thing to consider about the UED working with Duran so closely, remember that they are very far from home and are going to be forced to recruit locally one way or another.
    Reinforcments are not coming.
That's why their plans hinge so heavily on stealing the Dominion's military resources like their battlecruiser fleet. They need these machines of war and didn't bring enough manpower to police the 13 terran worlds self sufficiently despite the recent Zerg Invasion.
Not to mention that the Dominion was already busy trying to put down insurgent militias like Raynor's Raiders and former Confederate units. The UED would inevitably have to bring the sector into compliance by force over a long period of time.

    • @Dog.Dad.Studios
      @Dog.Dad.Studios  2 місяці тому

That’s very fair and I can believe the recruitment angle 100%. What I still don’t like is the UED’s willingness to listen to Duran, disregarding long time friendships and facist upbringings.
Thanks for taking the time to write all this!

Even as a 12 year old when it came out, Brood War story wasn't super engaging to me and felt hollow. Kerrigan lying and betraying everyone and their dog? Shocker. I'm so glad you brought up Duran and the hybrid at the end because that part blew my mind as a kid! I felt like this story was so much deeper after that part and it was. Overall, Brood War storytelling wasn't even meh, it was poor.

  • @Antidragon-nl7by

What really irked me about Brood War's story was just how bitter the ending was. Kerrigan had won. The Zerg were victorious. I'd undone everything I'd accomplished in the last several campaigns, and every Terran and Protoss in the sector was at the mercy of the swarm.
I was expecting (or at least hoping for) a last minute twist that would take the sting out of the tragedy... and it just didn't happen. I do love a bittersweet ending, but this was just _bitter._
That's what hurt the worst in the story. After investing yourself into the setting and fighting through almost sixty missions... you accomplished nothing.
Terran 1; Mengsk just replaces the corrupt tyranny you just overthrew (after you helped murder a planet).
Zerg 1; you establish the Overmind on Auir (after you helped ruin a planet).
Protoss 1; you destroy the Overmind you established to rescue a doomed planet.
Protoss 2; you drive the zerg off a planet by blowing most of it up (at least until they come right back in Zerg 2 to blow it up some more).
Terran 2; you kidnap an new Overmind that sprouted out of the ground after the old one from Protoss 1 died (which by itself invalidated both Zerg 1 and Protoss 1).
Zerg 2; you destroy the replacement tyranny from Terran 1, ransak the planet you saved from the zerg in Protoss 2 (WITH the Zerg), and kill the Overmind from Terran 2.
In the end, there are no tyrannies, planets, or Overminds left. You've gained nothing and accomplished nothing... but at least Kerrigan is queen **tch of the universe.
It just left me feeling so empty. I loved the game, but the love was not returned.

I always disliked the UED backstory in the campaign. I enjoyed the idea of the lost human colonies and Earth as almost a place of legends for the Koprulu Terrans. The concept that the UED monitored the sector for years/decades just made the whole galaxy a smaller place. And then, them using the same tech as the local Terrans just didn't make any sens. They would have worked better as a separate, local Terran faction, like the Umojan Protectorate or the Kel Morian Combine. The story could have stayed the same.

what annoys me most about the kerrigan betrayal in "true colors" is that mengsk says "you said that revenge was secondary to defeating the UED", to which kerry replies "i lied"
no you did not. you said it was secondary. with the UED defeated, the primary thing is gone, so what would now happen to the secondary thing? right, it's the primary thing now.
i understand they might have been surprised that she'd betray them during the celebrations, but them going to war with each other again was always part of the deal to me.
also, how are we not talking about the whole "where is the captain of the UED fleet?" story-element? for one frame during 29:59, you even have that message open. They clearly forgot the player as a character after that point. although they don't, as at 32:52 addresses you again... why didn't he ask about it before stukov gets killed? guess he didn't care. are we multiple captains and the one at 29:59 can't escape?
