  • NEW DELHI: He’s arguably India’s most loved soldier, an inspirational leader par excellence and India’s first Field Marshal. Sam Manekshaw was also known to be blunt and forthright, never afraid to speak his mind to the powers that be. He was India’s Army Chief in 1971 when India took just 13 days to beat the Pakistani army hands down, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’ that coincides with Manekshaw’s 107th birth anniversary, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale details various facets of the man’s character and how he refused to take a rushed decision of going to war but chose to wait and prepare.

Thank you for this episode remembering this great man, but you did a great disservice by not mentioning how he was abandoned in his last days by the same govt who he gave victory. I believe, there was no PM or President or any high ranking government official present to honor him in death and bid him farewell.

Indian Government, the political masters and the serving serving Chiefs have failed to live upto their expectations as they failed to pay their respects to the late Field Marshall S F H J
Manekshaw, when he breathed his last in Wellington. It was only the late President A P J Abdul Kalam, who was instrumental in releasing the arrears pay for over 30-years amounting to Rs 1.3 Crores. The then Congress Government owes answers to the Nation for their failure to pay respect and timely release of his dues. He always fought for the welfare of the Jawans.

Nitin ji I watch your videos and without exception they are factual, brilliant without any party orientations. A small query from a layman - the usage "he rose from the ranks" is used to convey becoming an officer from the enlisted men. The other aspect is I felt that you could have cut 2 to 3 min on creation of Bangladesh and instead spoke on Sam Bahadur's affinity to Gorkha troops and how he came to be known as Sam Bahadur. Lastly, a few words about his sense of humour. I recollect that he was seriously injured in WW 2 from a Japanese machine gun fire with his guts spilling out and as you said "about to die". When he was taken to military hospital the British doctor asked him what happened. He said "oh nothing a donkey has just kicked me".

BSF is always forgotten and same here. 1) BSF started its activities since march 1971 . did first contact with awami league by themselves on R&AW intelligence, 2) BSF trained mukti bahini, conducted raids in their territory to setup radio, damaged bridges and other communication links and provided safety to families of freedom fighters of bangladesh against an attack of Pak Army battalion, 3) BSF provided shelter, food and clothing to refugees.BSF first raised bangladesh flag on land of east Pak, 4) BSF officers/men got MVC,VC and Sena Medals. Even Pakistan Army officer Brigadier Bakir Siddiqui also mentioned about BSF when asked by journalist about BSF. "Don't give me that FIB . They are as good soldiers as we are" . One can read more in BSF magazine on its website. Media should do some research and atleast help people recognise their contribution too.

Nitin Ji- Would you please share your thoughts on the following; Do you think the USA will actually place sanctions on India once S-400 is delivered or more likely find a way to not do that and provide an exception? And if they do sanction (hypothetically, but is a real possibility), what are the ramifications?

Nitin we know all that and much more. You did a disservice to Manekshaw by not dwelling on the way he was treated after retirement and that his retirement financial benefits were withheld almost to his last moment. No one attended his funeral. You should have spoken about the way he handled the Pakistani POWs. I am willing to be mollified if you make a video to discuss these issues. Manekshaw himself has spoken on some of them. What have you to say. I am waiting.

Sam will always be an example to others and India should be proud it produced such a General. But the way the Govt of handled his
funeral arrangements was a disgrace and i would blame then Defence Minister Anthony and then defence chiefs for not being present.

During late 60's & early 70's, early in Indira Gandhi administration, there was some fear among Delhi politicians that some Generals may attempt a coup. It is reported that Mrs. Indira Gandhi even directly asked Manekshaw about it. There was a strong rumor that he was awarded Field Marshal so that he could be sidelined from active control. Apparently, when commander, he sometimes refused to follow orders from civilian higher-ups.

    A very inspiring narrative.
But I think you have overooked Manekshaw's contribution in accession of Kashmir ro India. He was part of the decisive meeting wherein Patel forcefully quitened Nehru and told Manekshaw that Indian Army has got orders to move into Kashmir . He was also part of the team that went to Kashmir for getting signatures of Maharaja hari Singh on Instrument of Accession.
Much like the 1971 victory, Manekshaw's contribution in 1947 to merger of Kashmir riyasat with India can never be forgotten . That in itself would require a compete episode !!

This is an excerpt from wikipedia of the late Field Marshal.
"" At the end of 1947, Manekshaw was posted as the commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, 5 Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) (3/5 GR (FF)). Before he moved on to his new appointment on 22 October, Pakistani forces infiltrated Kashmir, capturing Domel and Muzaffarabad. The following day, the ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh, appealed for help from India. On 25 October, Manekshaw accompanied V. P. Menon, the secretary of the States Department, to Srinagar. While Menon was with the Maharaja, Manekshaw carried out an aerial survey of the situation in Kashmir. According to Manekshaw, the Maharaja signed the Instrument of Accession on the same day, and they flew back to Delhi. Lord Mountbatten and the Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, were briefed, during which Manekshaw suggested immediate deployments of troops to prevent Kashmir from being captured. ""
      Hope this clarifies .
