Dr. APJ Kalam, the President of India met Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw at the Military Hospital at Wellington. At the bedside, Kalam spent time talking to Sam & enquiring about his health. Just before leaving Kalam asked Sam " Are you comfortable, is there anything I could do ? Do you have any grievance or any requirement that would make you more comfortable? Sam said "Yes Your Excellency, I have one grievance". Shocked with concern & anguish, Kalam asked him what it was. Sam replied "Sir, my grievance is that I am not able to get up & salute my most respected President of my beloved country". Kalam held Sam's hand as both were in tears. But the remaining part of the tale regarding this meeting is that Sam did tell APJ that he was not paid the pay of the Field Marshall’s rank till then, for nearly twenty years. An aghast President went to Delhi and passed the pension with arrears within a week and sent the cheque through the Defence Secretary by a special plane to Wellington. Maneckshaw received the cheque and promptly donated it to the Army Relief fund.

It’s ironic that the comments section is filled with praises for the general but did the government in power at the time of his passing away, didn’t even bother to give him a state funeral. This man served the Indian from the pre independence days to after independence. Salute to you sir.

Please don't use his name to spread your false agenda . State funeral was given to him at Wellington in TN .There was only a single minister present in his ceremony and NONE from any central opposition party at that time . He was buried in the Parsi cemetery in Ootacamund (Ooty), Tamil Nadu, with military honours , adjacent to his wife's grave.

True professional soldier. No hatred against fellow humans even if they are from ‘enemy’ army.
At this ripe age also, he is clam, composed, confident and very very young... A legend we will always miss. We dearly need another Manekshaw right now...
Beautiful interactions and conversations between the people who made my country, make me realize , how strong , educated , lovely, funny, non-greedy and United as a family they were. I feel more at ease than listening to any other moral texts and sounds.
Back in 2007 when I was 8 at MH Wellington I saw a pale funny looking granpa in a wheelchair. If only I knew who he was back then.

From siddharth gautama, samrat ashok, Shivaji maharaj, and all the greats in history, napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander, Greek philosophers.. Only if all the knowlehde had preserved..
