    I have a Honda engine on an older Craftsman mower and it's been doing just fine for about 18 years. The only issue is that the owner's manual lists the oil capacity at 12 ounces but that will over-fill it. I've found that 8 ounces brings it to the proper level.

    • @smartcatcollarproject5699
      @smartcatcollarproject5699 4 роки тому +2

      Part of the oil most likely remains in the engine... also remember to let the engine run for at least 2 minutes so that the used oil is more fluid and comes out more easily, as indicated in the video.
      If you don't know exactly how much oil you need or you don't have a graduated container, just use 2 similar plastic bottles, fully drain the used oil in one, then place the 2nd bottle side by side on a flat surface, and fill the 2nd bottle with the exact same amount of new oil. After the oil change start the engine, let it run a bit, then look at the dipstick and add some if needed.
      I did 3 oil changes today without any manual using this method, after each refill I put the used oil in a larger recipient, and repeat with the next engine... 1 mover, 1 power generator, and 1 weed eater, one oil tank was still full, another needed a small addition, and the 3rd much more.

      Use the oil grade that the manufacturer tells you to use. Usually with small engines that is SAE 30, 20W-50, 15W-40, 10W-30, and in reallllllllly cold areas perhaps 5W-30. I don't think 5W-20 is proper for a pressure washer nor in hot climates.

    Thank you. I did my first oil change successfully. I poured 12 oz of new synthetic 10 30 weight (go it at HD) specially "designed" for lawn mowers. I did not mow my lawn first as suggested due to oil being totally worn out and emptied it out without any hassles. Now that I know the DIY (thanks to you) I'll definitely keep up with periodic oil changes. After how many lawn cuts do you recommend an oil change to be done?

    • @Megalodon1
      @Megalodon1  6 років тому +3

      Depends on the size of your lawn, I do mine once a year because I don't need to mow during the dormant months in Texas. Generally after every 20-50 hours of mowing, an oil change will be required.

    Synthetic oil is goog, but made for a liquid cooled engine. If you change your oil often, that's fine. But you should use small engine oil with ZDDP in it, because of the extra heat in an air cooled engine , and the fact that there is no oil pump, you need the extra protection.

    I just saw another video that talked about tipping the mower on the proper side because of oil getting into the muffler or hydro locking the engine. Isn't that taken into account by the manufacturer when tipping it on its side to change oil? That video was for cleaning under the deck. Which way should it be tipped for that?

    • @Megalodon1

      My video clearly outlines which way you should tilt the mower, you may however tilt it any which way you want or take any other videos suggetions, it's all up to you and your own research. I'm just showing how I've done it for the past decade with zero issues myself.

      You posted this a while ago so you may have already got an answer . If not, just know that it’s normal for some mowers to have to wait 10 min IF you don’t keep it running for at least 3 or 4 minutes to get it hot before turning it off. However if your mower still needs 10 min even when it’s hot then that’s not normal. Not sure

      Reading this comment I remember I had the same issue with a small Honda power generator, maybe 10 years old at that time, 20 yo now, it just didn't want to start while warm. Now I notice that during more recent years it always restarted just fine...
      Not sure why, though, I did my 2nd service today, and the lower 1/3rd was full of oil maybe you need to clean the air filter, as oil could take 10 minutes to evacuate... or replace the spark plug which I did ~10 years ago... That's the only maintenance I ever did on it, 2-3 oil changes and air filter cleaning, and 1 new plug.

    As you may agree, engine oil is the life of your lawn mower as it is with auto engines. So if it takes you an hour to mow; every 20 hours or 20 cuts would be the time to change your oil or every 5 months or twice a year (except winter months). In Southern Cal our winters are fairly short. Would you recommend that the oil is drained for the off season? Thank you for answering.

    • @Megalodon1
      @Megalodon1  6 років тому

      Most mower engines need their oil changed every 20-50 hours of operation. A mower's owner's manual will indicate how often to perform oil changes on the mower. At the very least, an oil change should be done annually with other seasonal tune-up maintenance.

    • @daveroberts6884
      @daveroberts6884 6 років тому

      An oil change is so easy to do. You can do it for the price of the oil and maybe a funnel. I would not sweat it. PS: what looks only slightly dirty on the stick will look much darker in the catch basin.

    • @tomfinn6579
      @tomfinn6579 Рік тому

      There’s no good reason to drain the oil for the off season. If you do that you run the risk of forgetting and starting it in the spring with no oil.
