Thanks for the information. The solution fixed the issue. I’d tipped the mower back so to remove, sharpen, and re-attach the blade. This must have disturbed a particle in fuel tank/carb fuel reservoir and it went to create mischief in the carb jet. 😮
I looked for a drain plug and cut your video after looking it up. Thanks for the great sound and image quality. I bought the mower for my mum, who is 83yo and I'm sure she also thanks you for the help. People at the dealer were not so cooperative.
I just bought new hrx217 today to repiace my 12 year old hrx217 with broken transmission. This is helpful information as I always screwed in the dipstick while checking oil level so I was underfilling.
Nice job. Good tip to repeat the pouring out of the older oil. 👏👏👏 I understand this was the 5 hour oil change to so the following is not appropriate. But, in general, when changing the oil I think it's a great time to clean the bottom of the mower (AFTER all the oil is drained) and sharpen or replace the blades. Changing the air filter and spark plug are also a good ideas if it's the end of the mowing year. One other point. Did you get to see the defective compression release mechanism on your mower? If so, could you share with us any insight you gained by looking at it? Also, what about the status of recalls for the mowers in the USA? Did your dealer know anything? Australia Honda has already issued their recall several months ago with the specific model numbers affected and specific serial numbers of units that were recalled.
Thank you for watching! Cleaning the mower deck is a great idea and as you stated I would have done so had it been more than 5 hours. Unfortunately, I did not get to see the defective cam. Please like and subscribe!!
Thank you for your video. I have the same model, brand new. I like this mower but having some issues with mulching and wonder if you are having the same problem. When the clipping director is fully closed for mulching, there is a small gap such that clippings fill up the chute. Looks like a bad door design and wonder if you know a fix for this. Thanks
Honda has not released the details yet on which models are affected. It’s my understanding that they are working to determine which serial numbers are affected. Once I learn more, I will update everyone. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Honda issued the official recall today 9/14/23 and you can check serial numbers on their website. Finally! Looking forward to your next video about it. This video was very helpful. Thank you!
Excellent video. Why doesn’t Honda instruct people to tip the mower more than once?! I only got 8.5 ounces of oil out when it was filled to the correct level. Anyway thx!
Thank you! I am not sure why they don’t share this tip. I am guessing that they simply printed a slightly revised version of the early model with the GCV190, which doesn’t need to be tipped more than once. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for more Honda mower content.
Hmm, I was using 5w-30 full synth and engine definitely has a valve tick, good I saw this video, didn't realize its supposed to have 10w-30! Bit thicker oil might help.
The difference between the two oils is the viscosity when cold. In the case of a mower, that’s not a huge issue. However, for a snowblower, the 10W30 could mean harder starting and less lubrication at startup. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for more Honda content.
Thanks just did the first oil change on my hrx 217! How you're liking the plastic deck? That is my big concern about mine hopefully it will last a long time
@@DeafRedneck you’re welcome! Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe. I personally like the plastic deck. I guess time will tell in terms of how long it will last.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe for more Honda content. Typically, you should not have to add more oil after the oil change unless it was underfilled. Depending on the number of hours, it is possible that the unit could burn some oil, but usually that is not the case.
@@manuelzermeno3702 the transmission is a sealed transmission. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to check it. Yes, it can be disassembled, but you would not want to disassemble it just to check the fluid level. As long as you don’t see any signs of a leak, you should be good.
There is no way to reset this particular hour meter. My recommendation would be to look for an hour meter with maintenance reminder capability. You more than likely will not be able to reset the overall hours, but you should be able to reset the maintenance portion.
Small engines require a specific oil. Vehicle motor oil is not designed for air cooled engines and will break down from the heat these engines produce. Obviously clean and fresh oil is better than old oil but it will break down a lot quicker and increase wear.
That was my first thought when I saw that. You're correct, these air cooled engines run much hotter than automotive water cooled engines. By the way Honda 10w-30 oil is rated SN, most mower oil in the big box stores is only SJ rated, even the synthetics.
There is no doubt that keeping up with oil changes will prolong the life of the engine. People don’t think about the fact that these small engines do not have oil filters. The dirt remains in the oil.

HRX series is so easy to repair at home by yourself and when empty for oil fill a little clean oil and pour it out again to flush it clean

Oil capacity is 0.55 litres which is roughly 18 oz? I’m confused about the 12.5 oz.

Why does my manuel say use 30 under detergents oil ?
Where should the oil level show….up to the ring on the dip stick, or the groves in the bottom?

I did this but my gas kept leaking out so I suggest you run it dry first. If you don’t get ready for gas everywhere or it just might have been me. 😂
Did you remember to shut off the gas prior to tipping the unit?
If it's leaking from the cap, try a plastic lunch baggie. Remove cap, apply baggie, screw cap on.
Every 10 hours charge the oil folks
