I thought of that also, but he is still a muggle. A Dementor attack is brutal, even to wizards.
It didn't matter. One was not supposed to perform magic in the view of ANY Muggle. That wasn't the point. The real thing is, Harry was acting under self-defence and that was a legitimate justification, not that Fudge and Umbridge were willing to hear.

It's amazing that Fudge says clearly in front of the entire court that the laws about underage magic can be changed just to make Harry guilty
@BamaBroTTV That is only under the principle of Lex retro non agit, if the ministry doesn't follow said principle or has determined that there are circumstances that allow for the principle not to work, then the ministry from the perspective of its legal system can and if willing will do that.
The question whether its moral, how law should look like, when can law be changed etc. can be asked and depending on the answer we can judge the wizard legal system and say its bad or not.
@MythMakesTV I do believe they ARE able to do whatever they want. The Wizengamot is both the legislature and the highest court, are they not? Seperation of power and the right to a fair trial do not seem to be popular concepts in the 'Wizarding World'.
The representation of a corrupt government that will pull any strings necessary to ensure their position in power is safe and unthreatened. Voldemort's return was both a threat to Cornelius' position, and a very scary thought for Cornelius in and of itself, because he truly feared him. And Harry was the one insisting he returned. Obviously given Harry's backstory that the whole world knows about, then if Harry shows up (with the dead body of his friend no less) and cries out that Voldie's back, obviously at the very least some eyebrows will rise and questions will be asked. Cornelius felt threatened by this, I mean shit look at his reaction when Dumbledore tries to reason with him, the man's literally shaking and looks like he's ready to fucking cry, and so he needed Harry silenced, so he staged the whole Dementor attack to force Harry to break the law by using Magic and then have him arrested and out of the way, cause funny how Harry has used magic outside of Hogwarts while underage before, he inflated his uncle's sister and had her flying around the sky like a balloon and nobody cared, the matter was just swept under the rug, but now after Harry tried to warn everyone of Voldemort's return, Cornelius needs him silenced, and if the opportunity to arrest him doesn't arise on its own, he'll create the opportunity himself. That was also the whole point of sending Umbridge to Hogwarts and getting Dumbledore out of the picture. He needed everyone silenced and docile, and he just needed to ignore the problem and hopefully it will go away (well that and he was convinced that Dumbledore is after his position, so he felt threatened from every angle basically, he was a cornered cowardly animal in this whole scenario) It's very telling of how people in power abuse their power and will pull any strings necessary, silence whomever needs silencing, and manipulate any situation that needs manipulating, in order to maintain their power.
I'm about to change the laws of the entire British wizarding world to arrest this underage kid.
Fudge should have immediately accused Harry as a murderer in Cedric case with jealousy and wanting to win at that point
“Laws can be changed if necessary” so you change it whenever you please to help or hurt the defendant
But in the case of Cornelius fudge I bet he had modified some laws to his own selfish interests.

This scene is our first introduction to Umbridge, and the condescending way she talks is still extremely eerie to me. As the villain of the story, she certainly made quite the first appearance with as few lines she had.
She's worse than voldemort in my book.
@@lauradonofrioart Voldemort is evil but doesn't care about hiding it. (He makes his intentions very clear.) Umbridge feels more insidious because she puts on a mask. They are both ruthless, but Umbridge hides behind a veneer of respectability and people like her are quite common in the real world. It truly is incredible that he hadn't lost his fucking mind.
I think so too. It's too much shit for a teenager to deal with (but unfortunately this happens on a daily basis with millions around the world).

They should have accused Harry as a murderer too for Cedric case. No witness and good for them to say Harry is lying about voldemort to cover up a murder
I hope somewhere down the line all corrupt ministry members were executed for their treasonous role in maintaining the lie that voldemort wasn't back.
The responsibilities harry has had to uphold, for example saving Ginny from the basilisk, has matured him. He was only 15 but I'd definitely consider him a man at that point in his life.

The sad thing is Dumbledore was offered many times the position of Ministry of Magic but he repeatedly turned it down because he felt power was his one weakness, particularly as it lead to horrific consequences in his youth namely the death of his sister Ariana. And forever left guilt ridden on his conscience he famously promised to himself he would never go for power again.
Dumbledore did take power, in the form of becoming headmaster of Hogwarts. The key difference between becoming headmaster and Minister of Magic is that the Minister was largely a political position, while being headmaster allowed Dumbledore to make positive changes in the lives of many magical students. Serving oneself versus serving others, basically.
@@spencercarruth9706 and did not took it by force,he was a teacher first then became headmaster
Dumbledore was not Ministry of Magic but he become leader of the Wizarding World by being elected at the ICW .
Just reading this comment and thinking it over. If I were a wizard in the wizarding world of Harry Potter I think there are still things I would use in the Muggle world that are just simply not available in the wizarding world. Like for example I would probably I were. Dumbledore would’ve gone or searched out for a Muggle therapist who was not discriminatory towards wizards and witches and who I could talk to and talk about my problems. It’s things like counseling that’s just not available in the world of magic in Harry Potter‘s world anyway, that should be available that’s available in the Muggle world. I feel bad for Dumbledore because him having to live with the fact that he felt guilty about his sister‘s death and felt like it was his fault is really sad and it really makes me think why in the world are there no counseling services for wizards and witches in the wizarding world? so if I were a Witcher or wizard or Dumbledore in this case or either or I would probably try and find a mug therapist, I could talk to who knows about the magical world and gets some help.
He still had more common sense than the real minister did

Oh, right, sorry. Big. Cloaked. Dark. And suddenly everything went cold, as if all the happiness had gone away from the world.
Well she didn't exactly specify did she?
@@jaredruff9823Now Now. Dementors don't just walk into a muggle suburb and happen across a wizard. The odds are astronomical.
This is literally the only defense Harry needed, The Patronus Charm only effects Dementors, ergo the only reason he would have cast one in the presence of a Muggle would be to defend himself and the Muggle from said Dementor! Suck it Fudge!
Nightstrike90 Not necessarily. That WOULD be the most logical reason for a wizard to cast the Patronus Charm (especially in front of a muggle as previously noted), but one could also theoretically speculate that Harry was showing off his Patronus to the muggle(s) in question. Not only is this counter-story not implausible considering how reckless teenage boys are known to be sometimes, but it looks like that may have been precisely what Fudge was trying to imply by calling Harry’s defense a “well-rehearsed story” and pointing out how unlikely it would normally be to find a Dementor in a muggle suburb.
@@LittleMissRequiem If Fudge is winging this accusation based on assumptions of underage wizarding mischief, then it's still very implausible, most cases that warrant a breach in the statute of secrecy involve wizard kids casting cantrips, jinxes or hexes to bedazzle or play a prank on muggles or each other.
The Patronus Charm isn't an underage category or minor spell you can just cast willy nilly or for fun, it's a last and probably the only line of defense against a dark and deadly creature. There are much more easier spells that produces grander and entertaining effects.
It's not cast in an act of mischief, it's cast when you're desperate to create something that will stave off whatever horror is trying to kill you like Dementors or Lethifolds.
That's why Amelia Bones, one of the ministry wizards attending the hearing, was amazed that Harry was able to do such a thing.
If wizards, even the underage ones, who are in terrible danger can accomplish feats of magic that were initially thought impossible for their abilities. Then it gives more credence to the possibility that Harry was indeed trying to fend off dementors instead of trying to impress Dudley.
But again, Fudge is biased.
Yeah, but he probably thinks that 'Arry and Dumby is suggesting that the ministry did order the attack, and he never believed that the Darklord is back, even tho there's alot of things going on at hogwarts... da Golden Trio, Dumbly, Snape, and McGonagall, the Weasleys(except Percy) are aware and knows whats happening... Umbridge however is a b***h and (siriusly) she could be one of Voldy's followers... lol
Not necessarily
Unlike other magic, Patronus charms are personal to the user, which makes you liable to show them off.
There's a scene with Snape using his Patronus to show he still loves Lily, for example.
The famous "hem hem" by Umbridge 😂
fam thats just hilarious😂😂😂
The first time I read the book I thought it was like a throat-clearing sound.
She always does that! So annoying!
She may be hem heming by this day enjoying the solitude at Azkaban
As I always live by: hate the character, respect the actor.
I can tell that Imelda Staunton (Umbridge) did a damn good job of playing the character.
I love dumbledore in this scene I love him in the entire series
I do too. But I were to be isolated from everyone for God-Knows-How-Long because Dumbledore says so, I'd be mad at him too.
I love Dumbledore too. It comes down to the two actors that played him the late Richard Harris and of course, the late Michael Gambon. I thought Richard Harris did a really good job as Dumbledore and I really liked the way he portrayed him as being soft-spoken. I do like Micheal Gambon’s portrayal of Dumbledore as well I’m he keeps it pretty authentic and he makes it his own. But if Richard Harris had lived, it does make me wonder how different these scenes would all be but RIP Richard Harrison and RIP Michael Gambon.
Here's one thing I wanna bring up. It may have been illegal for Harry to cast the patronus charm at the time. But they say it that he produced the charm in the presence of a muggle. A muggle who just so happens to be Harry's cousin. The son of Harry's caretakers. Someone who is already -at least somewhat- aware of the wizarding world.
…It wasn’t illegal, they were being attacked by Dementors. The ministry has a self defense clause for underage wizards.
This is more than most American public schools.
Amelia Bones was the underrated hero here. She stood up to Fudge, kept the trial fair and eventually Harry was let back into Hogwarts.
She voted in Harry's favor too
ALBUS!, PERCIVAL!, WULFRIC!, brian... Dumbledore

The volume change really helped with that line
Something that I always found odd here is that neither Harry nor Dumbledore mentioned that the Muggle that Harry saved was Dudley, with whom Harry lives and who knew about Harry being a wizard since the beginning
Lol. The nerve on umbridge.
She was the one who sent the dementors to silence harry.
She nearly got Harry expelled! >:(
This is all her fault!
Best part is that Dumbledore is stronger then all the ministry. They wouldn’t dare to mess with him
The woman that clears Harry of his charges, is nobody other than Amelia Bones, described by Slughorn and respected by Dumbledore as "The greatest sorcerer of the age", she was an incredibly powerful witch and an extremely smart and fair woman, she's Susan Bones's aunt (the little girl from the first movie that's the first student to get sorted by the hat).
After the events of this movie, in one paper on the next movie shows that Amelia was found dead at her home, Fudge believed Voldemort himself murdered her, due to how powerful she was and because she was openly opposing against him.
Voldemort and dumbledore were the only people capable of putting her down. Imagine if the order of the phoenix managed to get her under their wings. The battle at hogwarts would’ve been drastically different

Squibs are of magical descendant. They are not like Muggles, who have no ounce of magic in their veins. It's just that a Squib's ability to conjure magic is stunted to where it's difficult, often impossible for them to perform it. But the magic is still there, and they can see things that have been hidden from the view of the Muggle world.

Fudge knew that he had no leg to stand on yet he was trying to make Harry as a example. The interaction between Dumbledore and Fudge reminds me of the battle that went out between Churchill and Chamerlain at the beginnings of WW 2 where Chamberlain just wanted to allow Hitler to get away with things figuring it would go away while Churchill spoke out about the truth. In the end, the truth came out and Chamberlain lost his position and probably haunted him for the rest of his life.
That's really unfair to Chamberlain as any modern historian will tell you, he wasn't an idiot and while he certainly wanted to give peace a chance he held little delusions that Hitler would and he tried buying time for the UK and France to rearm. Also, going to war with Germany over the Sudetenland and Poland without at least attempting diplomacy would have been deeply unpopular with the British public, if not unthinkable, and would most certainly have alienated France, which really, really didn't want another war with Germany after the horrors of WW1 (Great Britain felt similar to a lesser degree).
I'm no lawyer, BUT it seems to me that the only rule broken was the use of magic outside the school. The other charge of using magic in the presence of a muggle is mute since the only muggle there was Harry's cousin Dudley, who already knew of the wizardry world.
Unless it needed to be defend themselves and other from death.- Dumbledore said that. Fudge really want Potter to be expelled
Voldemort: And I thought I was more evil
Lol
"Brian"
Arriving 3 hours early is the most Dumbledore thing ever 🤣
Idk why but the “Brian” ALWAYS send me into orbit
Even though she’s part of the ministry I really liked the lady who led the “yays and nays”, she voted in favour of dropping all charges
And she's the aunt of one of Harry's fellow first years during his first year at Hogwarts Susan Bones
She’s my fave character from the books👌🏻, and she realised that the minister was trying to railroad him into confessing
3:21 "He is not... back!" Those words endangered the entire Wizarding World, allowed Voldemort to gather his strength and build an army of Death Eaters and other dark creatures (Dementors included), and after the entire year, costed Fudge everything he ever held dear: his job, place as the Minister of magic and his reputation.
This was a vast improvement for Dumbledore's character from GoF.
"DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE!" Dumbledore said calmly
Apart from the moment in Hogwarts when Dumbledore randomly shouts at the students "Well? Don't you have studying to do?!"
That was out of character for Dumbledore
@@catguy4996 Eeyeah... 😅

@@Gur7910 _"Ahhh!!! ABUSE!"_ 😂
I love Mrs Figg putting her hand up when they were voting to clear Harry of all charges! But Dumbledore turning up at the Ministry 3 hours early just seems like such a Dumbledore sort of thing to do!
I wouldn't be surprised if he actually knew the hearing was changed
The problem with the Harry Potter franchise is that in every book it establishes some incredibly useful magical means of dealing with a problem, uses it once and then drops it forever. Just off the top of my head, in this scene Harry's version of the story could be confirmed with either Veritaserum, by a skilled Legillimens (there are bound to be some in the Ministry's employ), or by examining his memory of the event in a Pensieve. The trial was of course a sham and the Minister was pushing for conviction, but given the number of votes in Harry's favor, there was a sizable number of impartial members of the court who canonically must have been aware of these options and should have brought them up.
Actually this is the way to keep the series interesting.you are right, but I think other series' do this too
1. They didn't want the truth, just condemn Harry and make it as an example. 2. Magical means cannot be used as proof in wizard trials because they have ways to be countered
Imelda Staunton such a great actress..
When Dumbledore says “I don’t think the dementors were there by coincidence.” And then Umbridge interrupting guessing that Dumbledore thinks the ministry ordered the attack kinda insinuates she had something to do with this matter. I never noticed it before.
Nice name
yep. In the books she reveals that she was the one who sent the Dementors after Harry
They actually don't reveal who sent the dementors in the movie
@@shahbazshaikh2884 I wonder what fudge would have thought of this
Regardless of whether or not the movie did a thorough enough job in comparison to the book, I doubt many can deny that they still made Madam Bones look like a badass bitch.
cringe
Madam Bones was killed by Voldemort himself. And according to Fudge, she fight back.
The Ministry definitely had no leg to stand on here. Dumbledore said so himself that magic can be used in life threatening situations and the muggle they are always referring to was Harry’s cousin who already knew about wizardry existing!
Lady: please describe the attack, what did they look like ?
Mrs Fig: Well one of them was rather large and the other one skinny.
Fudge: not the boys the dementors
This kills me every time 😅😂
Dunno if any of y’all did it but when it was asked for those who wanted Harry to be cleared from all charges, I raised my hand in a heartbeat.
The exchange between Dumbledore and Umbridge is priceless. You don't even have to hear the dialogue; Michael Gambon's body language as Imelda hem-hems is just priceless. Dumbledore freezes, turns his head, and leans a wee bit forward, like 'excuse me, what?'.
Dumbledore is such a badass in this movie!!!
1. First he proved that Harry is innocent in the trial.
2. Then he told umbitch to go “fuck herself” when she tried to get rid of Trelawney.
3. He escaped from the minister in a badass way, followed by Kingsley’s badass line: “you may not like a minister but you can’t deny, Dumbledores got style!”
4. And finally he fought Voldemort in the most awesome wizard fight in movie history!
These are just some of the reasons why Dumbledore is my favorite character in the Harry Potter franchise!
Too bad all of his backstory got cut in the movie
umbitch what the fuck are u calling me
Cornelius: "...laws can be changed if necessary Dumbledore!"
Dumblodore: "What is this? a threat? you cannot change the laws during a trial in court!!!"
The most telling moment was Fudge’s response when Dumbledore pointed out that an underage wizard using magic in front of a muggle in a life-threatening situation is not against the law. Fudge came back with “Laws can be changed.” Why would he even bring that up if he wasn’t so desperate to convict Harry by any means necessary?
Did Fudge truly believe that Voldemort had not returned, or was he just denying it out of paranoia?
Paranoia
Its easier to be the minister of magic when nothing is happening in contract to when the most powerfull dark wizard ever has returned. He really was a disgrase to all ministers of magic
Hunter Wilder Partly paranoia, partly manipulation/bribery/etc. by Lucius Malfoy, and partly sheer insecurity that Dumbledore might one day replace him as Minister for Magic (especially since the wizarding community originally wanted Dumbledore to be Minister, though Dumbledore declined the position; that, coupled with Barry Crouch Sr. being passed over due to the scandal with Crouch Jr., is the only reason why Fudge became Minister in the first place).
@@LittleMissRequiem not to mentioning that power corrupt him and because he had become so fond of both his job and the power that came along with it he had convinced himself that he was the clever one and Dumbledore was simply stirring up trouble for it and also the fact that he simply did not want to face the fact that Voldemort was really back because it would be trouble like the ministry hadn't to cope with in many many years it was much more comfortable to convince himself that Dumbledore was lying and Harry was untrustworthy.
Fudge was being a coward.
I thought it would be insane if the Ministry brought up that the Dementor's kiss technically doesn't kill the victim rather than leaving them alive but in a soulless, vegetative state, and they refuted that Harry acted in a "life threatening situation."
It would have been funny, but I doubt the Wizengamot would have fallen for such a flimsy excuse.
So good you can watch 100 x and enjoy it every time
love how he lost some steam when he said “BRIAN” 😂
For context, it was Dolores who sent the dementors after Harry.
I won't be surprised if the same Dementors that attacked harry in Prisoner of Azkaban was her fault too (It's not mentioned).
No, that was Fudge who did that.
@@Powerranger-le4up That was unnecessary of what they did! >:(
@@Powerranger-le4up the dementors attacking in Harry was Fudge's fault but indirectly. Dumbledore had serious reservations about them guarding Hogwarts but Fudge insisted since Sirius had escaped prison. The dementors attacked Harry coz they were tempted during the Quidditch game

Always thought this scene was boring as a kid, now i go back to it more than any other.
The ministry: You are held a hearing for using a Patronus Charm.
Harry: it was because of the dementors
The ministry: you used it in front of a muggle
Harry: You should be well aware that he already knew that I am a wizard
The ministry: dementors don't simply appear in a muggle known area
Harry: we were in a tunnel where almost no one cares to go through
Dumbledore: oh those are just basics we got more
The ministry: NANI MASAKA YOU CAN'T HAVE ANYMORE MORE
Dumbledore: oh yeah time to get started on The Dark Lord
If I wasn't a slytherin I would hire Dumbledore as my lawyer
Even as a Slytherin why wouldn't you?
@@epicfan1598 even death eaters could have used him since some had to lie to get out of being imprisoned when Voldemort fell the first time
Love that defiant stare by Amelia at Fudge @4:23
Loved the sound when Cornelius Said " Clear of all charges!"
This scene demonstrates how broken the wizard establishment had become at this point in the story
The system always fails you hahah
