Snape was a terrible teacher. Not because he didn’t know his subject- he was an expert- but because he bullied people in his class rather than motivating them, unless you were a slytherin. Though to be fair, we don’t see how Snape treats the non-Gryffindor students, so it’s possible he’s fairer to them, but it’s doubtful. Slughorn is better than Snape because he doesn’t create an air of fear around his classroom and acts much friendlier towards his students, but his habit of picking favourites is also problematic, because he neglects the other students in favour of them.

That statement is actually correct, if we account for the Half-Blood Prince and Severus Snape to be two different personalities sharing the same person. This isn't Split Personality Disorder that I'm on about here, just how the same character behaves in two different situations. Severus Snape is the teacher, the Professor, the spy. He's the sardonic (albeit most entertaining) bully of an instructor who causes undue trouble for certain students like Neville Longbottom. 'Severus' is the personality of Snape as he deals with the outside world. The 'Half-Blood Prince' is how he talks to himself. The notes in the margins were intended only for Snape's own use, not for others'. The textbook was his experiment journal. He taught children the same concepts in his classes, but refused to enlighten in a genuine manner, preferring to keep his charges in the dark about crucial topics and proceeding to sarcastically condemn them for that very reason. Severus is not the same person as the Half-Blood Prince, at least not in personality.

I think this has to be one of my favorite scenes of the academic sides of hogwarts. A teacher setting a friendly competition in front of his students for a tidy reward, which directly or indirectly gets them to learn.
In real life, a teacher would probably use extra credit as the incentive and that would be enough, but of course in Harry Potter the stakes are raised with the magical concept of “liquid luck” which is just fantastic.

    • @therebel4332

If you make it competitive thats naturally going to give a lot (esp lads) of them a tail up. We’re competitive creatures, also we find it motivating and entertaining. The problem most schools have is not understanding our personal natures and instincts,, not understanding what type of personalities they have amongst their classrooms. Hence why you get a lot of bored and disinterested students (esp lads) who are staring off into space,, academics is very boring for most youngsters. Watching the scene where Harry is teaching them in the room of requirement,, how much more excited and motivated they look because its all very competitive and the stakes are getting higher,, its a lot more motivating when theres something at stake.

I had a teacher who used lollies as an incentive he used to have us play a game called "around the world" where we would either do maths or spelling challenges with one student going from student to student being asked questions if they got the question right they move to the next student if they get it wrong but the other student gets it right they continue on while the first student sits down in the others seat.
Anyway, the game goes on until someone gets to the teacher who gave them the bag of lollies. If at any time both students get it wrong, then they get another question and the teacher gets one lolly.
He would also eat a lolly if we wouldn't shut up. I won the maths one once and the spelling one a few times.
      Maths wasn't my strongest subject.
Also for more incentives it was a $1 worth of lollies which back then was a big bag and for clarification there were lollies for 5 and 10 cents so in a $1 bag you would get 2 of each 5 cent lollies and 1 of each 10 cent lollies that's quite a lot of lollies. I would on occasion get a 50 cent bag that was 1 10 cent lolly and 1 of each 5 cent lolly. So you could imagine a bunch of 8 and 9 year olds might really want to win the bag of lollies.

The thing about Hermoine is that while she has a good brain, she doesn't have the spirit of an Ravenclaw. Lune's dad said it best; 'painfully limited. Narrow. Close-minded.' For her, if it's written in a book it's written in stone, otherwise it's not true. I think the reason she was so bitter about the Prince's book is because she was jealous. This was someone who could not only learn from the book, but build on it. Someone who would experiment, innovate, and make something original; something we've never seen her even attempt.

So that makes Hermione similar to a classical computer. She’s logical and can execute steps with precision. Hermione is very much a by the books kind of person which is why she finds the library to be a comfort of sorts. Books give her direction. Developing a strong friendship with Harry and Ron helps her open up a bit through the story.
She does exhibit some inventiveness by Book 7 though. Using the undetectable extension charm to turn her bag into a cargo bay to carry all their supplies is advanced magic. But she had a quite of bit of skepticism initially when it came to the Deathly Hallows.

And in the case of Neville, Dean, and Seamus, watching their school transform into a Dark Arts school. These were probably some of the last good memories these kids had before being forced into war.

There are multiple ways to make a potion, just like there are multiple ways to solve a math problems. However, not all mathematician publish textbook.
Snape is probably a genius potion master who is deeply knowledgable but never publish his own book. Think of the textbook of hogwash as "high school level" potion making guide, whereas snape's modification is PhD level. Like sure you're going to solve the problem approaching it the high school level way, but at PhD level there are just far more understanding going into each ingredient that almost surely a PhD is going to find at least 1-2 more efficient way of cooking a potion, comparing to the rigidness of the high school textbook method.
For example, the textbook said "Cut". The purpose of the cut is to extract the juice. Snape straight up know the purpose, and find out that "crush" is actually easier and efficient that accomplish the same goal of extracting the juice. Hence, he make modification saying: "crush the thing, don't bother cutting, it's easier".
This is just to show how far above the level Snape is comparing to the average book writer. Like the book writer knows that tthey wantt to extract the juice. The book writer only thinks of cutting because that's how he was taught and he never bother to investigate a more efficient method. Snape experimented and genius-level understanding of potion, so he is able to make modifications as he please. I dare say he has invented himself a few potion of his own.
Applying that to real life, most textbook aren't written by the most brilliant in the field. Terrence Tao don't write High school Algebra textbook. Stephen Hawking don't write High School Physic textbook. Their understanding of their respective field is so bleeding edge that I am sure they would find High School problems too trivial, which is why they dont write those easy textbook in the first place.
p/s: as tthe world chess championship is going on, Snape is probably like a Super GM rated 2800+ in potion-making, whereas your average textbook writers are in the range of 2200-2600 - IM, low GM-ish. That's how far above the textboook writer Snape is in potion making field.

Snape's guide is probably far more foolproof to make the potion successfully which Snape learned himself (either by accident or just because he was that good). The standard book guide probably still lets you succeed but the chances of that happening are not as good as with Snape's guide and requires a expert potion maker to get right. Would make no sense for them having a guide to make a potion that can't let you even make said potion successfully.
As we see lot of them are also making simple mistakes in the class even with the standard guide hence why many of them won't get it right.

This scene shows something very important, Hermione has always relied on books as J.K said before. That's why anything that couldn't be explained in books would be impossible for her to acknowledge. Sometimes you need to "break the rules" or be a little "adventurous" to discover new things. That's why she was so angst towards Harry, the simple fact that he could overcome her without doing what she has done through all her life was unfathomable.

But she doesnt as easily develop insight into the whys and hows because she tends to not bend the rules. Shes been shown to be able to do so, but it's tough for her. Shes like structure and rigidity. Little easter egg-
The love potion changes colors, according to what Hermione's describing. At the end, the color turns red/orange, which is obviously not the color of toothpaste. She was probably smelling rons hair. Also explains why she had that facial expression.

Harry learned more from Snape's notebook then he did from Snape himself in 5 years of classes. Goes to show how good a teacher he could have been if he wasn't more interested in Bullying then teaching his students. And goes to show Harry was never truely bad at potions. He was just to busy being bullied to make good ones.

Yeah if I remember correctly there is a scene in the 5th book when Harry was in potions class and Snape was clearly ignoring him and was not on his neck like he was previously and due to that Harry actually made a really great potion by himself

I also think there was some bias on Harry's part too. He didn't want to learn from Snape while he was in his class but had no problem learning from his writing in a book. Even in the first book they assume Snape is the bad guy when he isn't. They also assume that about him a few other times.
