    Not sure if this has been said before, but the whole "solving the mystery didn't matter" comes from Japanese horror tropes. The idea is that the supernatural world doesn't act like the regular world, and has its own rules. Generally, in Japanese horror, once you have the attention of some supernatural force, you're doomed. You can't escape or appease the force in a way that makes any sense, it at all. Solving the ghost's mystery and saving yourself is an Western trope, while Japanese horror focuses on the impotence of man in the face of the supernatural.
    Also, in the sequel in Japan, the lead from the first movie is revealed to still have died. (Also the same in the book, if memory serves)

      SPOILERS FOR THE NOVELS
      In the novels it’s a virus. The copying didn’t really save you unless you did it to new media (ie writing a book about the experience, or copying from the vhs to UA-cam etc). Which only worked for the person who did the new media thing. Also in the novels Sadako (Samara) is using the online videos in order to impregnate women to make Sadako clones in order to take over the world.
      Hope that helps

    I always found that the idea of surviving coming with the cost of killing someone else to be one of the things that made Ringu, and by extention the American remake, so powerful. It forces the hero to step into very moral ambiguous territory.
    And the idea that understanding Sadako/Samara would be enough to kill it/her, doesn't hold much water anyway. Sadako is evil, the kind of evil that propagates by contaminating others. This idea of Ring as a virus is more fully expressed in other Japanese entries to the franchise and is crucial to the novel.
    And speaking of Ring 2, I was at a meet up with the director, Nakata, who did the first Ringu. He explained why Ring 2 is such a mess. Apparently, it was a severe case of studio meddling. Studio representatives would drop by mid-shooting and if they saw fit would veto an entire scene, replace it with another, or change it until it bore no resemblance to what Nakata had in mind.
    He said it was so bad he nearly walked out and returned to Japan and only stayed on for respect to his team. It was hell to shoot and convinced him never ever to shoot in the States again.
    I think the cicadas thing in this movie may be a weird and very misplaced reference to the first movie in the sense that in Japan, the cry of the cicada is supposed to mean that tragedy is about to strike. That's the only explanation I can think of and it still wouldn't make any sense as cicadas never even feature in the Ring.

      There are so many notoriously bad movies that can be explained by horrible studio interference, it's actually amazing how often that's the case. I think it shows most directors and writers are truly capable, it's execs who know nothing about this stuff practically that cause problems.

      So many GREAT points here! Only thing I disagree about is the Sadako part (only partially). Apparent you haven’t seen “Ring 0 Birthday”, prequel to Ringu 1998. Sadako was just a REGULAR girl who was innocent, sweet not guilty. But she was born with half demon blood (rumored her father was a sea Demon). So she had a twin..an evil twin. Instead of killing her, they could’ve gotten her help to stop them from binding together. Once Sadako was killed, ALL those ppl did was trigger the bad side. So really, I blame the ppl.
      Also the Ring HAS used bugs before (flies) just not the cicadas. It wasn’t a bad idea to me but the execution seemed random so maybe it could’ve been left out
      So SAD they barely let Hideo have ANY creative control. So embarrassing . I’d be HONORED to work with him and let him do whatever the heck he wanted. I get that almost ALL franchises jump the shark eventually, but the US Ring could’ve been a solid trilogy if they made the right choices

    • @Nocturnalux
      @Nocturnalux Рік тому +2

      @@lessismore8533 I have seen it, but the books make Sadako pretty much pure evil. In fact, Sadako is not even a girl, at all, but has no actual gender.

    • @Macephtopheles
      @Macephtopheles 4 місяці тому

      @@Nocturnalux Tbf, even in the novels she wasn't "pretty much pure evil." The reason she became that was because she was raped by a doctor, thrown in a well and sealed in it by him. Before she died, she'd vowed she'd get vengeance on the world for what had happened to her. Also, during the doctor's assault, Sadako had bit him and contracted small pox from him which mutated within her and became the "ring virus." So post-death she was "pretty much pure evil" but in her life she definitely wasn't. Literally an onryo template, basically.

    The whole tape copying thing was lost in translation from japanese to english adaptations. In the Japanese one, Sadako (Samara) wanted to be an actress, so that her memory would live on forever, but died before she could. That's why the tape is so important, and showing it to someone else breaks the curse, because you're spreading her memory to someone else

    • @lessismore8533
      @lessismore8533 Рік тому +1

      I wouldn’t say “lost in translation “ but part of me would maybe. The tape copying thing for Sadako is an ANALOGY for how she wanted her acting career to go, and therefore acted as (tragic) foreshadowing.
      Though Samara is her OWN character and has a different back story, they still could’ve given Samara her OWN unique foreshadowing leading up to her making the tape. The “lost on translation “ part has to do with her not getting a prequel like Sadako did. Yea we’ve seen flashbacks of her backstory but Ringu also had flashbacks but we STILL got “Ring 0 Birthday” that showed how everything started. That’s why the Japanese Ringu had a SOLID 3 movie trilogy. The USA version could’ve TOO if they made better decisions.

    4:50 I've always seen 'The Ring' as a commentary on sensationalism in media. There is a moment in the movie when Richard Morgan says 'What is it with reporters? You take one person's tragedy and force the world to experience it … spread it like sickness'. I find it really interesting that nothing that she does actually ends the curse, because I think that what the movie is trying to say is that the way in which the media treats crimes (trying to give the public all the details and information) doesn't stop the thirst of the public for more sensationalism.

    Just a quick comment on some things you said about The Ring. The reason why copying and showing the curse tape is what matters in the end is because Samara is EVIL, always was, and wants her evil to spread. And if you think about it, the only way to save yourself from the curse is by committing an evil act yourself, cursing someone else and getting them quite possibly murdered. Rachael first did this unknowingly but had to repeat it to save her son. That's pretty grim. Samara wins after all and her evil will never stop. This was never the story of a ghost with unresolved issues that needed to be liberated to move on, this was a misdirection for both the Rachael character and the audience. This also served as pretty damn good commentary on perception and how media can twist a story to make it look one way when the truth might be very different. At first glance, the narrative that a young girl was misunderstood and later murdered by her own parents kinda makes you instincively feel sympathy for that child and assume guilt for the parents. We see at some point the tape of interviews of when Samara was in the mental institution, we see it through Rachael's eyes and her motherly biais. Samara speaks softly and saddly, "And I'm sorry, it won't stop" as though she doesn't want this to be happening but can't help it. Later, when we know the truth of her character, our perception is no longer tainted by this biais, she speaks the same line in a much, much more sinister ton, revealing that she in fact loved hurting people and would never stop because she revels in it. Samara was evil when she was alive, torturing animals and people around her purposefully by photo projecting images on horrors directly into their minds. And even after death, her evil continues from beyond the grave reaching to us using our own media obsession against us (something even more relevant today). Rachael releasing her spirit from the well may have in fact made Samara stronger - which, in an alternate reality, could've lead to a great sequel... But no. Fuck Ring 2. That piece of garbage negated everything that made the first one terrifying...

      Idk if this qualifies as a "nitpick" or not, but I always hate how movies portray "computer starts acting of it's own volition to screw over the protagonist" moments.
      They always just show the computer opening various windows and sending it to the appropriate people, while the protagonist just slaps the mouse and keyboard screaming "NONONO!!!!!"
      I feel like it would be INFINITELY better, if instead of that we just didn't see it.
      Imagine if just out of the blue the character gets a couple emails/texts back saying "uh... dude why did you send this shit? Is it a joke or what? I don't get it?"
      Then the protagonist goes to check the outbox and sees it's FILLED with outgoing messages ALREADY sent with no explanation at all.
      Hell, even having the character DREAM about sending the messages in an uncharacteristic haze would be better as it would immediately put doubt in them even trusting themselves, and open the ocean of "well when/how/why did this all happen?!"
      I have a hard time picturing my phone going through and opening each window while I stare at it, than I do imagining turning my phone on and seeing some crazy shit was just already sent out with no input or effort coming from me at all.

    The reason Samara was "defeated" by copying the tape and not be solving her death or resting her spirit is because .. well .. she doesn't give a fuck about being laid to rest. Samara's goal is to spread her influence. She acts like a curse or a disease more than anything. She is looking for vengeance, not peace.
    Everything in The Ring done to solve the situation is a red herring. It's a lesson in futility. You can't bargain with a ghost like her. You can't just tuck her into bed and kiss her goodnight. The end lesson we get is that, sometimes, the cycle of hatred just continues. There's no breaking it.

But at what cost, open back data discs? How did we fall for that global media conspiracy? MISSED YOU!! So happy to see another video from you! And I completely agree! The first Ring was amazing and probably the best Japanese to American adapted film and it did provide a lot of iconic twists and scares that are still unforgettable today.
    As a side note: There's always something that these type of movies never take into account. What's Samara's end goal? To have everyone see the video so she can eventually take their lives? That's great and all, but apparently from Rings story it's spread across digital files which would go viral given enough time. That means EVERYONE in the world would see it at some point. And what's Samara gonna do when everyone in the ENTIRE WORLD has seen it and died?? Then she's gonna have no one left to feed off of. I hate lazy writing like these types of movies, but i still can't help myself and I still enjoy the original Ring movie.

    my fav bit is about knowing the exact time one watched the video. it reminds me of the rough estimates provided by scientists to action heroes: "When will it explode?" That's an awesome analogy! I think my favorite example of what you mentioned is from The Dark Knight Rises. To be clear, I enjoyed that movie, but the whole thing with the nuclear bomb's countdown was laughable. It was supposed to eventually detonate because of some natural decay process, but then all of a sudden it has a digital countdown timer. And it wasn't even originally designed to be a bomb! That was a major wtf moment.

    I may be in the minority, but I really like the idea of Samara still killing people even after her mystery is solved in The Ring. At first, the movie tried to make her sympathetic "She's just an abused girl who wants to be saved." However, the twist showed that salvation is not what she wants, she wants revenge. That to me is way scarier. A sympathetic child who wants help is nice and tragic, but a girl who wants to kill everyone who knew her story and didn't share it, despite anything else they did to help, is scary. It also makes sense in the abuse way: child abuse can only stop if you tell someone and share the story, just being concerned or empathetic does nothing.

      Yeah, Ringu is vastly superior. The remake is so stylized, it isn't scary because it doesn't seem to take place in the real world. Ringu 0 is also great. A prequel to Ringu, it's more of a tragedy than a horror movie because it shows Sadako as a victim of fear, paranoia and hatred. And the prequel actually explains some things in Ringu and Ringu 2 (Rasen is just crap)

    • @LadyAstarionAncunin

      Even though I live in Japan, I don’t find Japanese horror scary. It’s either sad, depressing, or unintentionally funny. Not saying it as an uncultured person but more someone who has a high tolerance for creepiness. In the Japanese version, when the people died, they looked like people pulling a face to get you to laugh. It’s funny and looks even faker than the “stylized” American version. I’ll take the epic scene of her coming out of the TV in the American version any day.
      My favorite Japanese horror film is “Dark Water” (as it’s called in English), not because it’s scary but because it’s a bittersweet tragedy.
