I got the 3070 because for me personally if I can run the game at max settings with either card and the only real difference is a drop in frame rate but that frame rate is still well above 60 than that's all I need.
Yeah, that’s my feeling on it too. I never had a gaming laptop before my 2017ish (I dunno the exact year on it, I didn’t notice back then) Nitro 5, so the frame rate wasn’t something I ever noticed. I removed the single 8gig factory RAM and replaced it with 32 gig 2666x RAM (although I found out my laptop would only register 2400x? I wonder how fast the 3200x ones are) until around a year an a half ago, when things finally started ‘breaking down’ so to say. All these models can boast about 300 fps, but I just want something that’s going to say, run 80-90 fps at high settings. Not because I need that, but because I think that would age well enough for a few years, instead of immediately needing to jump onto the next upgrade like now.
@@Norinia I use 1050 for a long time on both laptop and desktop. Just got MSI GF 65 3060 today and I am already so freaking happyyyyyyyy! Imagine 3070 @@ I just don't like too powerful spec on laptop because the thermal issues, limited power to CPU and GPU.
The mid tier GPU 1070, 2070, and now 3070 are a better value when it comes to "future proofing" your purchase. The "60" series of each generation tends to fall off too quickly, the "80" series tends to cost far too much to make it worth it. SO I find that the "70" series has a better cost to performance ratio, when talking long term purchase.
I dont think this the case with the 30 series mobile chips because of the drastic difference in power available to the GPU based on the config/manufacturer. There are some comparisons of 130w 3060 in a legion 5 getting much better performance than the 80w 3070 in the asus dash f15
@@theguyshetellsyounottoworr4415 ... The amount of Vram in the 3060 will eventually become the limiting factor in the long run. Generally speaking when comparing similar power speced GPU to GPU the higher tier will always outperform the lower one. So my original statement still stands true... when talking long term, a 70s card typically has the best return on investment. It's substantial lower cost than the 80 series, and it typically continues to perform higher than the 60 series long term. So while the 60 series is cheaper, you get a drastic reduction in performance as the series age. So you can typically get 5 years of usability (without completing reducing the visual beauty), in majority of games.
Yes I agree Honestly 3080 on laptop is only good if one wants to play 4k 30fps on external monitor which there isn’t any point in doing that IMO because of how noisy and hot chassis becomes
Right, if the price gap wasn't so huge like $100 - $200 more but i'd consider the upgrade but for $500 - 1000 more for some laptops i'll just save my money for something else and get the 3070.
I ended up with a 3080 laptop but for me I'm coming from a 960M 4gb vram laptop so it's a huge performance uplift for me. Recent games were barely playable at 1080P and now I play everything at 1440P high settings with great fps. It'll be interesting to see how long the performance sustains with newer games the next few years.
Oh I'm moving from 750 and lag during just regular use is killing me, eagerly anticipate being able to click on a track in video editing and not have to wait for two seconds for my laptop to catch up
Same for me, was using Y50-70 since 2015 with 960m and i7 4710hq will be getting legion 7 with 3080 and 5900hx in like 2 months. finally it will be exciting for me to play AAA games.
@@aviral1230 awesome. I have the Lenovo Y700 with the i7 6700HQ, 960M and 8gb of ram and upgraded to Ailenware M15 R4 with i7 10870, 3080 140W and 32gb of ram. Holy hell it's like light-years faster. I actually still have my Lenovo which I used to install Windows 11 and is now essentially my test laptop lol Enjoy the new laptop!
I went for the 3080 Legion 7i as delivery was 3 weeks vs 3+ months for the 3070! I plan to keep the laptop for 3 years or more. So that extra performance should help longer-term.
My last laptop died almost 8 years to the day, RAM and Mobile hard dive (can’t replace) were getting dead sectors. It was a Razer Blade Pro 2013 o think, figure my last laptop lasted me 8 years this one will too, may as well eat the extra cost and get one now (as I needed one for WFH time). Also RGB kek.
Thanks for the vid. Leaning back to the 3070 series after seeing this. I was thinking a 3080 16GB would be much higher performance than the 3070 8GB. You may have saved me 200-600 bucks depending on the model.
I had the choice between a 3070 8gb or 3080 8gb laptop and the price was barely different. Got 3080 150w and very happy with it although I cap to 60fps in every game anyway just to lower temperatures and fan noise a little bit.
Its ironic that most of this games being tested is that I never even played or dare to touch it except to warzone while I do play constantly. I am very happy with my i5 10300h 3060 100w above 60fps in high to max settings. kudos to those who have 3070 and 3080 wish I have more money to burn. love jarrods videos! keep it coming.

Hey Jarrod. Just picked up XMG Neo 17 E21 with 5900HX and 3070 thanks to your work and your recommendations. New AMD fan has been born... Without you my understanding of laptops wouldn't exist at all. All the best in future work, it is much appreciated. Thanks!
Sadly no, both the 3070 + 3080 laptop cards are desktop 3070's. The performance difference is like desktop 3060ti vs 3070, meaning naming rights not much more.
@@JarrodsTech I am debating between 3070 and 3080 Legion 7i. Given these are the only 2 that ready to ship and I can't modify any other specs. I don't care much about portability but I just thinking about which one is better for the bucks in the next few years.
@@nhat179 IMO not worth it to go with 3080 laptop. There may be a REAL 3080 down the line named as 3080 ti or 3090 for laptops. Also after watching tons of videos and reviews, only 2-3 laptops have the cooling capacity and power setup to actually use 3080 to its real potential, both 17" Alienware x17 and MSI GE76, no other laptop can handle the chip and will perform like a good 3070.
@@nhat179 if you really need 16gb vram and 8gb vram is a bottleneck, then you don't have a choice and buy rtx 3080, 3080ti ain't worth it yet, but if 8gb vram is fine with you then rtx 3070 is for you
For the XMG Neo the price difference isn't too much but when comparing laptop v laptop, something like a Legion 5 Pro RTX 3070 vs the nearest priced RTX 3080 laptop for me is anywhere from £600 to £1100 more when looking for a 5800H/32GB/1TB nvme SSD build. I paid £1340 for me and have seen people pay as low as £1100 after discounts for wait time which is so much better value than the nearest 3080 laptops, and most of them are poor 100w 8GB SKUs that are known to perform worse than a full power 3070 as you've demonstrated before. Still, I think this laptop gen is mainyl held back by how ludicrous the power draw on the desktop variants are. Gaming laptops have improved so much, the only thing we're missing is GPU efficency in the region of Pascal arxhitecture. Whenever we get that we may once more get full fat GPU core and mem configurations and be able to run them at what desktop users would run undervolted. I hope we see this sometime soon.
RTX 3080, at least in my opinion, is more catered towards professional users with the large 16gb vram that even the desktop variant doesn’t get. Gaming wise, you would almost always ‘run out’ of raw computational speeds before your VRAM is used. Yeah sure there are games with HD texture packs that takes more than 8Gb vram, but even the best 3080 laptops won’t be able to run these textures at a consistent 60fps that you would almost always need to scale down the resolution or to use DLSS in the games that support them. In that sense, the 3070 is not only much cheaper but only is 10% lower in most games. And definitely the better card for gamers. It’s in productivity situations that you really needed the large vram, like 3D rendering etc
@@siyzerix i dont know where did you get that from. Even the best 3080 mobile is around a non OC’d desktop 3060ti in both benchmark and performance. The 3060ti is a 1080p and 1440p card at best, and so is the 3080 mobile.

@@siyzerix rtx 2060 is a last gen card so i dont know why you are bringing that into our argument here. the 3060ti is a '1440p' card, yes, but it certainly doesnt do anymore than that. the 3080mobile is a cut down 3070, and is more akin to a 3060ti in terms of raw specs, but have half the power draw. if that doesnt mean it have worse performance than a 3070, then i dont know what is.
Honestly, I can't imagine paying so much for a gaming laptop. I paid $900 for my Helios Predator back in 2019 and it's running just fine (1080p 144Hz 3ms IPS Display, Intel i7-9750H, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, 16GB 3200 DDR4). Sure I can't play on the highest settings but I never expected to, that's what my custom PC is for (6800xt, 5800x, 32GB of 3600 DDR4). PS: Just looked up my laptop on Amazon and it's selling for $1,299! Holy shit, the supply shortage must be worse than I thought for it to go for that much.
Not all can afford two pcs, def not two gaming pcs. And if you're on the move a lot (student, working remotely etc), a good gaming laptop is a mich better investment
So you have 2 computers but you think a laptop that can do both is too expensive. This makes logical sense. You're not thinking about it in the terms that people who realistically consider these choices do. You should add the cost of your custom built desktop to your $900 to get some more realistic context. I'll add that I paid $950 for a 1060 & 6700HQ MSI stealth pro in 2017 and that was a very good price at the time & it's lasted me until now, so it's not exactly an apples to apples comparison your making. A lot of stuff wrong with your take
Just bought the Legion 7 (AMD) with 3070) this morning for less then 1500€ new. Could not wait for a comparable 3080 offer. :D I hope it can run just a bit quieter than the 3080 version.
I have an Alienware X17 with a 165w 3080 and a X17 with a 140w 3070. I did not see a difference in games when playing with both. Forza horizon 5, vanguard, doom eternal, dirt 5, halo infinite, Cold War. Both have the 1080P 360hz panel so vram won’t matter.
I would love to see how the 2080 150 watts is standing against the newer GPU. There are a few good deals out there and since for laptops the gap in performance is not like the one for desktop it might be worth while.
There are some weird things happening with these laptops (cpu power limits set by the manufacturer), I can guarantee that with some other brands with Intel cpus you can see a wider gap between devices.
You can say anything against Tongfang but you can't edit Power levels of CPU and GPU. Check the review of the Neo E21 by Jarrod early this year. You'll be amazed by the freedom left to the power user Tongang allows.
@@TheMacco26 You're right, I can't tell for sure if what happens at 5:20 is due to power limits set by manufacturer or by AMD itself, I just know that this kind of BS doesn't happen with Intel cpus, or at least not even close to limits around 30W like the AMD cpu here. However Jarrod seems to confirm that this is due to XMG (so, the manufacturer) doing this because they can't be bothered to give users a bigger power brick (embarrassing, honestly). Framerates would be higher with other laptops pairing the RTX 3080 with a high end i7 or i9.
Same thing would presumably happen on the Intel model too, given they are both limited to a 230 watt power brick, it is what it is, this is the fairest way I've been able to do the comparison. The reasoning is the 5.5mm standard connector does not support higher than 230W, I suppose a thicker plug might also need thicker laptop. It's noted on this page under "Performance notice for users of RTX 3080" www.reddit.com/r/XMG_gg/comments/oadli2/release_bios_update_for_xmg_neo_early_2021_with/ Fact is in most games for Ryzen ~40w or so is fine, at least outside of gaming, I've shown this in my Intel vs AMD CPU comparisons, where Ryzen hardly benefits more from more power, so make sense in most games to use the power on the dGPU.
@@JarrodsTech I know, that's why I mention other manufacturers that might give 240W power bricks for 3070 models but give you a 280W or 300W brick for 3080 models. Paired with Intel cpus of course. I mean you've tested other, better devices with 3080s, you know they can do better than this XMG. Edit: I guess this video is a pretty fair comparison when it comes to AMD cpus and you confirm that Ryzen doesn't benefit a lot from much more juice. Just saying that you'd see slightly different gaps with other manufacturers using Intel cpus and appropriate power bricks
I bet 16GB VRAM are going to help 3080 equipped laptop to retain resell value better, considering the cost increase is about the same with performance uplift, if your local second hand market is healthy going for 3080 model might make sense.
I highly doubt that you're going to run alot of games @4k that would use the 16gb on this laptop, but sure, from a marketing perspective I guess it helps.
Thank you very much! Is that possible to make some tests and comparisions in 4K resolution for those who has external 4K monitor? Of cource it means a lot of additional time to make, but I think it would be very useful. It's very hard to find 4K tests for mobile cards
Well, now, after watching both comparisons 3070 vs. 3080 and 3060 vs. 3070, it would seem that even 3060 vs. 3080 would make sense to make; the performance differences in certain titles may be "enormous", though in some cases the two GPUs come dangerously close, so the video could be like how 3060 can bring a few interesting surprises even when compared to 3080 ... not mentioning what would happen if you connected 3060 to an external monitor and left 3080 with the inbuilt laptop screen.
True. I was surprised when I saw the Legion 5 RX 6600m, and then shocked again when on that day, they had a sale where a model with 2 terabytes of SSD was under 1,400 dollars. I couldn’t jump on it, sadly, but I’ve got my eyes trained on it if I can put together a game plan :)
@@alejandroperez5368 for laptop that does not have mux switch, using external monitor will bypass "hybrid" mode and laptop will use fully on discrete GPU
Appreciate this. I have an MSI GT76 Titan I bought 2 years and 7 months ago, and it looks like I'm keeping it until the next gen laptops. A desktop 9900k at 5 GHz and a 210 watt 2080 leaves nothing on the table against these 2 "powerhouse" machines.
There was a brief period of time when manufacturers were selling the 2021 3080 models (to replace with the 3080 Ti) for much cheaper. Got the Legion 7 Gen 6 Ryzen 5900Hx w/ 165W 3080 for $1,699 and don't regret it at all.
In Australia at the moment, 3080s are literally ~$1000 more on average compared to a 3070, so I think I'll take what little FPS drop there is (at the very least it's still over 60FPS) and go with the 3070
I think that it is almost never the case with same generation tech that with increase in price/power at the higher end, the performance increases linearly. The higher the performance required, lower is the throughput.
It would be nice to see some older and wider genres running at 4k. Most games being benchmarked are boring, unoptimized triple a games. Would love to see doom Eternal, dragon quest 11, mass effect trilogy, ff14/wow
Everything you mentioned except Doom Eternal and FF14 are so old or low spec they'll run on anything, benchmarks are irrelevant. And even Doom eternal is so well optimized it'll run well on any modern system. You need a mix of things that will stress the system, how interesting the game is doesn't matter. If a PC can run RDR2, Cyberpunk, and AC Valhalla at acceptable frames, it'll handle whatever else you're throwing at it
@@rektcompass6218 yea. One classic game that i definitely would use for benchmarking is Microsoft Flight Sim X. Boy that one manages to get my Acer Nitro 5 lag even tho it's the Ryzen 7 w/ 3060 option (and this is already upgraded with 32gb dual channel....)
I have a 3070 laptop and it's absolutely perfect for me. It can run any game I throw at it. I'm very happy with it, the 70 models of graphics cards are the sweet spot for most gamers, if not even the 60 models.
I’m happy with my Alienware m15r4 (RTX 3070, 125-140, 16GB ram dual channel, i7-10870H) upgraded from a GTX 1060 laptop so this thing is kicking its ass. Hopefully I’ll be able to build a desktop in the coming years :)
you forgot to mention that if you buy 3080 with 16Gb of RAM you also benefit from a better future proof .... not to mention that the trend is to play in 4K, which RTX3080 does much better than 3070
Using the Eluktronics Prometheus 3080 16GB the wattage can sometimes reach close 150W+ average I would say 140W+ I think it was worth the few extra dollars because custom laptops cost less in general
@@twohorsesinamancostume7606 the thing is an absolute beast of a machine and I think it’s performing between a 3060ti and a 3070 which is really unexpected as it’s way cheaper than competing laptops and it weights considerably less as well being thinner as well so u can definitely use it for mobility
For me personally I am still a student and plan to be travelling a lot so the 14inch is a great combo. With that said I think people need to consider the resolution with respect to longevity. The same argument can be said for the gtx 1070 and gtx 1080 when they both released. The 1070 was the play but as games got better and people wanted to play at higher resolutions the 1070 dropped off significantly. However I would confidently say that if you only plan to keep this laptop for 3-4 years the 1070 is the right purchase
They are quite capable and some mfgs like for instance eluktronics will add liquid metal. The prometheus is a beast and the MAXs have a magnesium alloy chassis that helps a lot as well.
Thanks a lot for the data, but I guess the best way to test best case scenario 3060, 3070 and 3080 is in a Legion 7/i for now and maybe throw in a L5p with a 3050/ti in there as the legion 7/i can be had with the same CPU on all GPUs + it has 300w power brick and cools the 3080 perfectly.
@@gafitas05 Its not an easy answer but here is a run down. The legion 7 is the highest end with the all metal build and bling all around, will be the highest performance one considering the 3080 but not the best bang for your buck. But here is the curve ball, the 12700h is decently faster than that ryzen cpu so some games might love that although as both laptops run 2560x1600 displays the GPU will be the more important part (Some creative apps might love it, check the latest review from jarrod). the legion 5 pro with the ryzen cpu is the best bang for your buck for performance per dollar and it is the more logical purchase. if you are set on the legion 7 and the budget is a concern I guess the 1800 one is the better one if you are not comfortable changing the ram kit down the line as a 32gb kit will cost 100$-150$. I would recommend doing the following, watch the 3 reviews from jarrod L7, L5ip 2022, L5p 2021. See if there is anything that make sense to you out side of performance like how it looks, the RGB the size and weight and then apply performance metrics on that make a decision.

I was expecting at least a +20 fps difference but the rtx 3080 didn't, and there is a $400 difference between the legion 7 with the rtx 3070 and the 3080, do you think it's worth spending $400 on a legion 7 that has the same specs that the other legion only has the rtx 3080? If it were a greater difference in fps I would buy it, but I think I'd better stay with the cheaper version and buy a cooler In the end I chose to buy a Legion 7, after seeing several videos I saw that the Legion 7 had better temperatures and did not make as much noise, also the build quality is better, the RGB does not interest me, it is more when I buy it I will uninstall the software the rgb control to have more battery life. Now, between the legion 7 rtx 3070 and rtx 3080 I'm going to go for the rtx 3070, why? Because after seeing a video comparing these two graphics in 15 games I averaged the difference in fps, it's only 10 fps, that is to say I'm paying almost $500 more for 10 fps xd. It was silly to ask, but seeing the 16gb of vram really appealed to me and I almost bought it. But luckily I didn't buy it.
@@awsan111 Unfortunately if I change the ram I lose the warranty, rather, I can't open the laptop, it has a sticker on it, and when I open it the sticker breaks, that way they know you've opened it and you lose the warranty, also, these mdfk check even the screws with the magnifying glass to see if I've opened it, if they detect anything, while you've returned it to get it fixed they send it home. In addition, I have to pay for transportation and labor, which are $100, add $200 to that for the ram, in total it costs me $300 to upgrade the ram, a steal. Rtx 3070 vs Rtx 3080 8GB????, the difference between these two is 200 to 300 dollars, there is no comparison of this type on youtube, I think it would be nice to know if it is worth paying a few dollars more for the 3080 :D
I haven't gamed that much this entire year. I originally wanted to upgrade from my 2060 helios 300, but at this point I'll just wait until next gen. I don't see my gaming time picking up any time soon. I still like to watch these comparison vids for fun though.
Good comparison! I have X17 coming, originally I had 3070 in it but Dell made a mistake on my order. so changes were made and I got a discount. I was able to upgrade to the 3080 for $20 more than I was originally paying for the 3070. I'm upgrading from 1060 GPU!
I got a dell G15 3060 for $1162 with a 165HZ screen on a sale in dell's website, I didn't hesitate a second to order it. It is a incredible value, at a time when you are getting just a 3060 pc GPU at that price.

I think you should look into trying to compare these 2 on intel based laptops if you can. I am getting far higher scores than what you are posting on a GE76 with a 3080. Same tdp but easily another 10% or more above what you are seeing with the ryzen.

I dont understand why people say "the difference is smaller than I thought". If you take your time you can kinda find the same models of a laptop with a 3070/3080 for a 10-15% price difference - basically the difference in power this video shows aswell. The power difference also just goes up the more demanding the game and effects, if you go to 4k or use more RT applications the difference in performance is at the higher spectrum, while many of the games with lower differences are older/less demanding games. I personally think if you can find a 3080 version over a 3070 version of a model you like for 10-15% more its 100% worth it.
Fantastic this was exactly the vid I was looking for… SO HELPFUL! I have found the RTX 3070 Legion £1399 with the nice screen and the 15:6 165hz screen £1119 - even better. Compared with the RTX 3080 which is a whopping £2399 ! The performance gains would have to be incredible to pay £1000 more! Now all I’m thinking is - is it worth paying extra 300 for the better screen…? I’m holding on for the release of the new Legion 2022 series. Just in case we see a performance bump with the DDR5 RAM…
Hey jarrod, do you think that for online multiplayer titles like warzone etc, factors like server strength and maybe user's internet strength will affect benchmark fps?
No, They don't affect benchmark FPS, FPS solely relies on the processing power of the computer while internet input latency depends on server strength and your internet speed
Jarrod, do you play Warzone as a whole or only the practice battle royale for benchmark testing? Well, because seems like that my Legion 5 Pro is getting 130 135 as an avg in practice battle royale but 110 120 in normal battle royale. Don't know why. Even in Cinebench, I'm getting a score of 12700 12800 instead of 13200+ and about 10500 in timespy. Is this the case for eveyone or just mine? Or is it because of Windows 11? I am not much experienced in this field.🥲🥲
What should have been mentioned too is the fact that those 40-60 fps range is crucial in some game If its enjoyable or not. 10 or 15% diffrence could be much in that range. Also the 3080s 16 gigs of vram is much more future proof.
Loved the breakdown Jarrod. Quick question, is there an Australian counterpart to XMG? I've noticed a lot of your comparison tests between competing gpus or cpus are on XMG, though I am also looking at the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (or 7).
Can you please add more strategy games like Warhammer 2 Total War or Three Kingdsoms Total War to your testings? All these shooters are nice but what about what PC truly has exclusively, strategy games or MMORPGs?
Depend on what are you doing on the laptop. Igpu should be fine if you ONLY use the laptop for really light task like, office, browsing, photo editing (not video), streaming (music and movies), coding, etc. But If you doing heavy usage, like video editing, gaming,3d modeling CAD, 3d rendering, simulation, animation ,etc rtx 3050 is way better chocice
Hey Jarrod, I see many games with Ray Tracing off. I would have a feeling that the RTX 3080 would do comparably a lot better of that was enabled, am I wrong?
I always get my "new" laptops used because laptops drop drastically in price once it's only around 1 yr old or so... and upgrade about once every 2-3 years or new generation of gpus... And in my experience it's better just going for the 70 series and then upgrading to a newer gen gpu laptop than spending a ton of money on the 80 series trying to future proof.... Because even used the 80 gpu command a high price point unlike the 70's series... and the difference in performance is usually not drastic... but the difference in price is... For example got a 3070 for 1k and a 3080 laptop would have set me back 1.6K so... 60% price increase for average 10-15 % performance gains.. doesn't seem worth it... also higher temps...
Why did they cutoff at 1440p? Specifically 2560x1440 ? Why not 2160p? These days a lot of gaming laptops are used as Desktop replacement , and attached to a ultrawide monitor (like teh Samsung G9, or a variety of 38 inch Ultrawides) or a 4K display? All I know is that 1440p or 1080p knowing your clock rates for both boards are goign to be similar means the results we saw (RDR2 at 1080 notwithstanding) are what we should expect to see. And if we include 1080p why not also include the 2070, 2060, and 3060? Historically those compete quite well in a laptop compared to top level GPU's simply because fo thermal throttling. Shoot if you are doing 1080p and want best bang for buck the 1660ti smokes them all. And actually that would be very useful too. Because if the 3070 actually performs well, relative to a 3080, on the higher end displays it would be an even bigger reason to consider them
I look at it like "what can't you do with the lower tier GPU?" The answer is nothing. They get similar frame rates, the 3080 mobile can't really do 4k. Honestly, I probably should have gone 3060 not 3070 because it looks like the real value offering this generation.
Hi Jarrod - question for you. I just bout an alienware with the 3070 card. I am realizing now I think that using a monitor with HDMI input will only serve to nerf my laptop correct? I should just use the lappys built in monitor for best performance?
I have a Question? I am planning to buy a gaming laptop, sp which one of these two shall I proceed to buy? 1. Lenovo legion5i Gen 6 with rtx 3070 8 gb or 2. Gigabyte Aorus 15P YD with rtx 3080 16gb
Hey How u doing? I have a question. What's the best RTX 3060 Laptop Right now? Is Legion still the best? I really appreciate it if you answer me. Thanks
@@Norinia uhh ..

Same here
The mid tier GPU 1070, 2070, and now 3070 are a better value when it comes to "future proofing" your purchase. The "60" series of each generation tends to fall off too quickly, the "80" series tends to cost far too much to make it worth it. SO I find that the "70" series has a better cost to performance ratio, when talking long term purchase.
Perfect analisys! 👍
@@Mattiu75 ...Thanks, I appreciate the input !
Yes I agree
Honestly 3080 on laptop is only good if one wants to play 4k 30fps on external monitor which there isn’t any point in doing that IMO because of how noisy and hot chassis becomes
I went with the 3070, the 3080 was a $650 upgrade i could not justify that kind of price for only 9% on average more fps.
I think the same
Right, if the price gap wasn't so huge like $100 - $200 more but i'd consider the upgrade but for $500 - 1000 more for some laptops i'll just save my money for something else and get the 3070.

Thanks for this comparison jarrod. Been waiting a while for this video. Your videos are just really good.
It depends on the chassis design and cooling solutions.
Sadly no, both the 3070 + 3080 laptop cards are desktop 3070's. The performance difference is like desktop 3060ti vs 3070, meaning naming rights not much more.
That is always a factor, which is why I waited to have the same chassis to do this comparison.

Nice! And let's be honest, you really can't go wrong with either of the two.
What about 6800m?
You do realize, the rtx 3080 is close to a rtx 3070 (more akin to a 3060ti), so it is damn well capable of using high res textures.
@@siyzerix i dont know where did you get that from. Even the best 3080 mobile is around a non OC’d desktop 3060ti in both benchmark and performance. The 3060ti is a 1080p and 1440p card at best, and so is the 3080 mobile.
@@PrototypeElucidator I specifically said, ''more akin to a rtx 3060ti'' for a reason. And the rtx 3060ti is a clear 1440p card. Rtx 3060 is bordering between 1080p and 1440p. Rtx 2060 is 1080p.
Textures dont really affect performance
$1299 gets you a 5800H + 3060 now. Amazon doesn't have the best prices anyway.
Fact is in most games for Ryzen ~40w or so is fine, at least outside of gaming, I've shown this in my Intel vs AMD CPU comparisons, where Ryzen hardly benefits more from more power, so make sense in most games to use the power on the dGPU.

If a PC can run RDR2, Cyberpunk, and AC Valhalla at acceptable frames, it'll handle whatever else you're throwing at it
@@rektcompass6218 true
@@rektcompass6218 yea. One classic game that i definitely would use for benchmarking is Microsoft Flight Sim X. Boy that one manages to get my Acer Nitro 5 lag even tho it's the Ryzen 7 w/ 3060 option (and this is already upgraded with 32gb dual channel....)
Personally, I'd go with the 3070 and save those extra few hundred bucks and put it towards upgrading the system a year earlier.
Thanks for your hard work, mate!
I have a 3070 laptop and it's absolutely perfect for me. It can run any game I throw at it. I'm very happy with it, the 70 models of graphics cards are the sweet spot for most gamers, if not even the 60 models.
Will that play world of warcraft, with no lag?
I’m happy with my Alienware m15r4 (RTX 3070, 125-140, 16GB ram dual channel, i7-10870H) upgraded from a GTX 1060 laptop so this thing is kicking its ass. Hopefully I’ll be able to build a desktop in the coming years :)
you forgot to mention that if you buy 3080 with 16Gb of RAM you also benefit from a better future proof .... not to mention that the trend is to play in 4K, which RTX3080 does much better than 3070
Non-gaming test are the reason why I choose your videos when it comes to this topic.
Using the Eluktronics Prometheus 3080 16GB the wattage can sometimes reach close 150W+ average I would say 140W+ I think it was worth the few extra dollars because custom laptops cost less in general
I'm ordering that exact model in the next few weeks, how you liking it?
If u disable dynamic boost u can set 165w on the 3080 and mem will go ridiculous high i run mine at 140w though with cpu maxed
@@twohorsesinamancostume7606 the thing is an absolute beast of a machine and I think it’s performing between a 3060ti and a 3070 which is really unexpected as it’s way cheaper than competing laptops and it weights considerably less as well being thinner as well so u can definitely use it for mobility
on the MAX-15, the difference between 3070 and 3080 is literally $700. If it was only $400 more I'd probably jump tf on it.

I can see blooming from these laptop screens from here
For me personally I am still a student and plan to be travelling a lot so the 14inch is a great combo.
As a 90s kid everything above 60fps is good
I wish there will be more about Thermals and Temperatures in different tests, utilities and etc. May be another video for this please 3060-3070-3080?
if you have alienware rtx 3080 vs lenovo rtx 3070 Lenovo would win in 50-70% of games and in the same time cost few hundreds $ less
Is this a Tongfang chassis? Heard they are not the best in terms of thermal compared to the likes of Clevo, Alienware or Lenovo.
Only if he gets all 3 together at the same time.

@@awsan111 I was going to buy the model with 3080, but many told me that it is not worth it and it is throwing money away for a few fps, since it comes with a ryzen 7 instead of a ryzen 9, then it is a bottleneck.
After watching about 5 videos and more than 20 games I have made an average of the difference in fps between the rtx 3070 and 3080, and there is only a difference of 10 fps, both in 1080p and in 2k, I have been quite disappointed in the rtx 3080, in the comments there were many people criticizing it, like the rtx 3070 Ti, which is also a disappointment, only 5 fps more.
If it were a greater difference in fps I would buy it, but I think I'd better stay with the cheaper version and buy a cooler
In the end I chose to buy a Legion 7, after seeing several videos I saw that the Legion 7 had better temperatures and did not make as much noise, also the build quality is better, the RGB does not interest me, it is more when I buy it I will uninstall the software the rgb control to have more battery life.
That's why I think about buying the model with 32gb.
Jarrod I watched your Nitro 5 Video couple of Days ago since I got one with an RTX 3070 and just this morning literally the Nitro already died because Overheating caused the Display to just not work properly anymore. I do not recommend going with a 3070 on Nitro 5 or even an 3080 if you don't want the Thing to just melt
At 1080p
6800m = 8.42 percent faster than 3070
3080 = 8.7 percent faster than 3070
So at 1080p 6800m = 3080
At 1440p
6800m = 7 percent faster than 3070
3080 = 15 percent faster than 3070
So 3080 = 8 percent faster than 6800m
Thanks for another great video. Do you consider adding 4k gaming comparisons in the near future? I always use my gaming laptops with external screens and would really appreciate seeing difference in 4k gaming with these high performance rtx 3070 / 3080 graphics. Cheers!

Thanks for the comparison mate! Very helpful
Great video! Thank you very much for producing this video!
Thanks a lot, i was planning to buy this laptop and couldn't decide between 3070 and 3080 models, 16gb seems more future proof, but probably not the smartest idea
I'd always choose a 3080 if the price difference was like this and not a thousand bucks.
I think you should look into trying to compare these 2 on intel based laptops if you can. I am getting far higher scores than what you are posting on a GE76 with a 3080. Same tdp but easily another 10% or more above what you are seeing with the ryzen.
Thank you for your contribution to this community. Really enjoyed your video! Hoping for your thoughts- Money not being a consideration, if we had to choose between Mech 15 g3 5900hx+3080 160w+32gb 3200mhz and zephyrus g15 5900hs+3070 100w+16gb 3200mhz, what would you choose as a complete package? Main purpose is gaming and photo editing (Lightroom+capture one). Delta in price between both laptops for me is $800
I dont understand why people say "the difference is smaller than I thought".
If for nothing else, you gotta thumbs up the mountain of data in every video.
Fantastic this was exactly the vid I was looking for…
SO HELPFUL!
When jarrod uploads that's my cue that I've been up to late.

I bought Asus Strix G17 and never looked back. 300hz refresh rate pairs very nice with RTX 3070 at 1080p. + NO SPY CAM ( also known as web cam)
My take: 3070 for 1080p, 3080 for 1440p. But if your budget is strict 3070 or maybe even 3060 are perfectly fine.
What about 6800m? It costs closer to a 3060. But no dlss.
Doesn't really make sense. Going 1080p to 1440p is double the pixel count while the 3080 is only slightly faster.

Stupid but is it worth getting 3050 or a good igpu in a thin and light?
Oh my goodness, the stress that comes with this kinda purchase. Thank you.
Please compare Ryzen 9 5900HS vs Ryzen 9 5900HX...
Me watching this after paying higher for rtx 3080 instead of going for an rtx 3070.
I played Cyberpunk on high-ultra in 4k with 3060 laptop, no problem 60 fps
If I am going to keep my laptop for 6-7 or maybe 8 years is the 3080 worth it
