@@Tommy1marg Because there is no firearm you can say you can build for $1000 (or any price for that matter) when you don’t know how much ammunition you’ll need. It’s like saying that if you’re remodeling a kitchen, that you need to incorporate the price of food into it. Someone buying a new vehicle doesn’t include the cost of fuel into the purchase. Sure, for a first time gun owner, they need to understand that ammunition will need to be part of the investment. Accessories are too, although they can be added over time, if time isn’t a major factor. Ammo simply isn’t part of the cost of a build. A chest rig, night vision or body armor isn’t included in the price of a build. The rifle itself, and whatever accessories actually attach to the rifle are a part of the build. Ammo is like gas for a car, you don’t include it in the price of a car, as you expect to constantly have to replace gas or ammo. If you plan on shooting a lot, you couldn’t build any rifle for under $5k.
I really like your view of the 2nd amendment. The more I've learned about firearms (and other arms), our nation's history, and gun control advocates the more I've realized just how far off my views about the 2nd amendment were...and I'm still learning.
That's the glory of life my friend; there is always more to learn. On the 2nd though, it is unfortunate how it has-been skewed, yet here we all are. Learning bit by bit, learning to understand this world, potential dangers, and the science -- and art -- of dealing with those dangers.

@@dirtycommtroopI worked in the armory for awhile, the only thing OG on a lot of our M4’s are the lowers and buffer tubes/stocks. Most springs, and definitely the whole BCG and every so often the barrels are changed. These are FN’s primarily and used to be Colt M16A2’s. We now run Aimpoint M68’s as of.. 2015?
I've had mine for 4 years now and have been so content with it that I moved on to other platforms. I should probably get at least one more higher quality AR and will sooner than later, but for now the M&P is doing everything I could possibly need it to.
Agreed 100% as protective gear is something you already have and can buy cheaply that is not that bad as you can use it for other stuff. I'm an avid hand project guy that does wood working and other stuff and have started using my electronic hearing pro that cost very little comparatively even during the pandemic for that upgrade for my other power tools and other lawn equipment and it works fantastic. As far as ammo I'd only include that in the initial build if you don't have any of that ammo type around however that is definitely an expendable that you don't include after the initial build.
@@dkinneydk1 You don't get the point of the video. Sure, you can stick extra mags in your back pocket, but it's not as secure and you are probably not going to be driving like that. The idea is the AR-15 as a defensive rifle, not a fudd plinker. There are accoutrements necessary to make an effective militiaman defending hearth and home from any tyranny (home invasion, natural disaster community security) and a rifle with any type of purpose built magazine holder on load bearing equipment is crucial if you need to have a rifle and keep it running when you need it.
Yes and no. S&W’s HQ is in Springfield, MA. I actually went to school with Seth Wesson as a kid. He’s about my age. They understand liberals being from the NE. What they did and how they marketed the M&P-15 was both smart and accurate. The M&P-15 really isn’t 100% milspec, doesn’t have a full auto sear or BCG. Also if you’re marketing it to sportsmen, that’s more palatable than marketing it to warmongers. That’s the trap you will fall into. My point is that words matter so you have to be careful in selecting them. An “M&P-15 Sport” (Sporter) is a term that conjures going to the range not conducting a war. Your “weapons of war” approach gives credence to the narrative that we as lawful gun owners are about war, not self defense and these lefty jackasses in the media are going to take advantage of the average American’s lack of acuity on your valid point about irregular militias being protected by the 2nd Amendment. Liberal Marxists want to stomp that point out by invalidating it. The same way they want to define who a journalist is, they want to control legal use of deadly force and who can use it by defining who exactly is a solider and can use it legally. Your approach will be used to facilitate this goal of theirs using the same tool they used so effectively last year, fear. Our right to defend ourselves, property and rights is encoded in the 2nd Amendment. The right to “make war” is less defensible and the average person isn’t going to support that narrative, so think about modifying it before it is too late please. That isn’t going to get traction. I hear you in that we should not be apologizing to the lefties and I don’t like them, what they are about and least of all what they are trying to do here... implement Marxism. An armed civilian populace is not encouraged in Marxist societies so you would be under their boot and under their hegemony. Bill Ruger understood this and kept the Mini-14 legal in most of the ban states in how it was designed and marketed as a civilian weapon, not a “weapon of war”. That’s called smart, not apologetic, We’d better fight a smart fight with brains and balls or we will lose. Marxists always want a monopoly on violence. Read the Manifesto and Rules for Radicals. Understand their game plan and you can get ahead of it.
@@cbwelch4 War and self defense are one in the same.. stop pretending they're not. Both entail you squeezing a trigger and sending hot lead into another person to stop them with lethal force. I think the important thing about these budget ARs and AKs is they get more guns in the hands of more Americans. At the same time it's very easy to fit a 1000-1500$ build into your regular budget, especially over a couple paychecks.
You mention "I have no idea if this gun is all of a sudden gonna explode on me." I say that is quality build AND absolutely reliable. Iraqveteran8888 did a M&P 15 Sport ll fully automatic meltdown and lasted about a thousand rounds. That rifle will handle anything a weekend warrior will throw at it, especially in semi-auto which it's designed for. Great video by the way.
I have owned my M&P Sport 2 for several years now, and I've put several thousand rounds through it, and the only problem I've had is a stuck round that caused me to bend the charging handle. Other than that, it's been flawless. I couldn't ask for a better Rifle. Well worth the money.
Goldenwebb did a meltdown video yesterday with a knights armament SR15 and it only lasted a little over 500 rounds before the barrel exploded. I’m a BCM guy. For the money you can’t beat them. I’m impressed that the trigger pins didn’t fall out. The first time I took my DD Mark 18 out, one of the trigger pins worked its way out 2 magazines in
These UA-cam operators tend to have an elitist attitude towards firearm brands. The differences between upper tier brands like BCM/Daniel Defense/Radian and entry tier brands like Aero Precision are negligible. They just like to use whatever justification they can to make themselves feel better about spending double or triple the price.
I have never seen or heard anyone who owns a Sport 2, say anything bad about them. I don't know how this became the most underrated rifle. The M&P's are great rifles.
"This is a weapon of war, we have been neutering ourselves" I've had this take forever. That is making the argument that 2A isn't for making war, which it is. Thank you for the spicy take.
FYI: If you put the SW MP15 Upper on a Military FN Lower with an AUTOMATIC Setting and fired a couple of Magpul 60 Round Drum Magazines THRU IT the Upper in Automatic FIRE the Upper would have a MELTDOWN about half way thru the Second Drum because that Barrel, Handguard and Gas Tube will NOT TAKE the HEAT! There are MAJOR Differences between a Military M4/M16 and a Civilian AR-15 YES there are SOME AR15 that are BUILD to M4/M16 Standards of AUTOMATIC Fire but those are VERY FEW and they are NOT all COLT weapons FNH makes a Closer weapon since they use the SAME Barrel in both Lines. Just because something Looks Alike Does NOT Mean it will Perform the Same way! At that price point I don't see how it could even be talked down on. Say your barrel is worn down after 10,000 or maybe even less rounds. Oh well shit happens with any gun of any level at any price point, even top of the line. So if the barrel is worn, save up buy a chrome lined barrel slap it on the M&P and start sending more lead down range. I got my PSA rifle for $390 with a magpul flip up and a fixed sight post. 1000rds through it and it hasn't malfunctioned. Primary arms fixed 3x with a non battery dependent reticle, sling, and grip. this also lets me take the optic off and use the irons if it broke. I'm in it like $600. It’s a small gun shop in central Florida, Frogbones Family Shooting Center. It’s a little mom and pop shop, but he have a full indoor rifle/pistol range, a fully stocked store and a sister company bar and grille attached to the same building. Being the store that we are, I love that I can do two things there; tell people when their wrong and let people hold guns, play with them, test them out (we have a full rental fleet of pistols, rifles and shotguns) and most importantly, dry fire it in store to let them feel triggers and such. I know at big box stores they hardly let you even touch it unless you’re buying it. I’ve played Airsoft for 15 years and that all translated directly into my job as far as tactics go, luckily enough my boss is impressed enough with my shooting to let me inboard into the training group to be an instructor. I have to do the song and dance and get NRA certs but it’s a necessary evil to do what I love. I’m no Lucas, but I like to think that my training is paying off

FWIW my Sport 2 has had 1 malfunction in 3k rounds, no parts breakage, nor significant wear, and mostly fed steel case ammo. Sample size of 1 but it's been solid for me. Added a red dot, sling, ambi controls, and a different grip over a few years. No issues with Pmags or USGI.
Same with mine, the only issue I’ve ever had is failure to feed because I didn’t clean the rifle after 2500 rounds and let it sit for probably 6 months. Outside of that it’s been great, runs well suppressed and I’ve shot out to 550 yards with it and been able to hit my target. Shot after shot. All I’ve done is different hand guard, swapped out the trigger springs and put and adjustable gas block.

@@three5581 Kinda sorta. Some guns cost a few hundred, some a few thousand, but you have to ask yourself if the extra cost is worth it as long as the cheaper version is perfectly functional.
Well I have found for a person new to the platform it's a reliable starter AR. You can upgrade as you like taking your time so you don't break the bank.
I see plenty of ar’s at the ranges I frequent that are under $1,000 and ring steel at 400 yards all day long. This older gentleman built his back in 2015 for $400, has a scope on it and nails playing cards at 600 yards. I don’t know the cost of the scope but I doubt it’s over $600. If you need $1500-$3000 for an ar to be accurate and effective at 500 yards you need to become better with an ar.
Two years later of meddling in his personal armory filled with hundreds of weapons, NVGs, cables, ammunitions, batteries and accessories: "Ah! What is this?" **video flashbacks** "Omg, I see the truth now"
The issue is he clearly states you can't build a "rifle" for under a thousand. Yet he unboxes a brand new $650 rifle. Or you can buy a build kit for the same price just better quality and assemble it yourself. You can build a hundred different rifle variations for $1,000 or less but when you're talking about all the attachments and thousand rounds of ammo and all of that that is not what you stated in the beginning of the video.
Not trying to turn my nose up.... But I had a sub $1000 build for my first rifle. 5-6k rounds through it. After two years dropped $4000 full build. The differnce is night and day. I am not the best shooter out there but can gaurntee that the build/price level matters.

I watch a lot, really a lot of video's about firearms, subscribe to many pro gun channels, but most of the useful and practical information is usually found on t.rex arms. Great job, keep it up gentlemen.
The M&P 15 sport 2 is my base rifle. I have roughly 9800 rounds through it and it does work great. I upgraded the buffer and spring because mine failed at like 3k rounds. It’s a fantastic base to build from for such a cheap price. Solid video
@@squidy4082 definitely a good question. I’m sure the barrel isn’t giving me the best performance anymore but right now I haven’t been shooting due to the lack of available ammo. I would love to upgrade it to a rosco or even a criterion barrel.
I have a Sport II and I've put a few thousand rounds through it. Hasn't had any failures. Sure, it's not the highest speed tacticool "weapon of war" that exists. However it's a great choice for a budget rifle, especially if you can get it under $600. I slapped a two point sling on it with an Eotech 512 and a Magpul stock. It gets what I need done, and after I get my partner a rifle I will upgrade to a BCM upper and get some nicer accessories.
I love love love how real you just kept it, I'm subscribed but now I'm about to be a dedicated watcher from what just came out of the speakers. Respect bro.
I’d honestly never expect an optic to hold zero once it has come off the gun. There’s just too many variables that have nothing to do with the optics construction.
Awesome video man, thanks for all you do for the 2a community. As with everything in life you get what you pay for. I would also include in your price break down the cost of a class for training. That’s just as essential as the light or optic imo
Romeo5 is a great budget optic they are very durable and accurate for the price. If someone buys this for SHTF odds are they are going to leave it mounted and not play musical optics so returning to zero issue is a dumb Issue in my opinion. But I enjoyed the video keep up good work 👍🏻
Same I didn’t even know that “returning to zero” was something to be concerned about with budget optics or what that even meant. Like I see the Romeo didn’t return to zero after removing it so why not just re zero it or have three M&Ps to test the optics on so “return to zero” isn’t even a variable
The problem is, a decent impact should shift the zero too. It has a weak mounting point and no recoil lug. Return to zero plays into "maintaining" zero.
@@TREXARMS ahhh okay I see. So what you were pointing out was the Romeo 5 not having that little notch or “recoil lug” in the middle of the base of the housing? Or the mounts that come with cheap aimpoint micro type optics are just not a viable option if you do choose to run a budget micro red dot?
Well that’s why I say durable and accurate for the price. But I have 2 of these and have beat the crap out of them one stays under back seat of my truck I farm and shoot hogs regularly and have never had one off accuracy wise. Your video as far as the romeo5 wasn’t about impact it was simply taking it on and off. Not bashing what your saying at all cause I know you know what your doing but in my experience with this optic for the price it’s great. Also I love your channel and appreciate you commenting back
A different mount solves the problem also. I personally don't run red dots without a QD mount. The ADM QD gives you lower 1/3rd and QD for sub $100 and is money well spent IMO.
I bought this exact AR a few months ago at PSA for around $600. I've since changed the stock to an MOE stock, the grip to an MOE grip, the handguard to a quad rail, added a magpul RVG, and put a vortex UH-1 with a flip up 3x magnifier behind it. love this rifle. im about 700 rounds in and haven't had any issues with it, not a single jam.
@@DragonBallStrike I run a vortex red dot, but man I fell in love with the Huey after using it in R6 Siege. Do you run the micro magnifier or the older version?
Genuine question, how often are you removing an optic from a rifle and not throwing it on another rifle? I don't understand the practical application of having an optic return to zero. I have a few rifles with very different roles, and different optics tailored to those roles. I feel like the only people that would benefit are guys with tons of rifles and tons of optics.
Literally just had an experience that made this entire comment ridiculous. Long story short, it makes re-zeroing an optic or red dot on a new rifle way quicker then starting from scratch. The added benefit from all this is a mount that maintains zero when moved is going to better maintain zero when bumped around.
It's a quality standard. The point he made was the more expensive optic returned to zero, because of the quality its manufactured thus making it cost more. It fits much tighter on the gun and won't move around. Even when removed and put on another gun. Your more expensive optic mounts and or just optics come with a return to zero guarantee.
@@xPRODIGYxGAMER The fact that you compared a 100 dollar optic to something like an aimpoint shows that youre out of your depth. Trust me, if they were "Just as good", our military would be all over it. They give money to the lowest bidder, so why do you think the optics they buy are "Expensive" compared to the rest? Because optics like acogs and aimpoints are so many magnitudes better than the vortex or sig optics that militaries all over the world understand that the increase in quality is worth the 4-5 time markup. Return to zero is a quality control component, not something you'd ever really use. If an optic and mount can be knocked around, taken off, replaced, and shoot true to zero, it's well build. Your sample size of one optic isn't a true test, plenty of hi points out there that never jammed, does that make them good?
@@mynameisjeff6988 I'm sorry but the return to zero quality of a sight is due to the mounting method and hardware and not some "build quality" issue. I am yet another person who owns a Romeo5 and I can also confirm that you can knock them around and they maintain zero quite well. The reason they don't "return to zero" when you remove them and put them on another gun or the same gun later on is because the mounting solution doesn't allow for repeatable positioning on the gun. Which, is really only a problem if you remove it and put it back on. If you aren't going to do that, then they stay in zero fine. In fact, I've seen people test the zero on the Romeo by throwing it off a building and it remained at a perfect zero. Also, the reason the Sig isn't even considered for duty in the military is probably the same reason it's not respected by peoppe like yourself, that's because it's made in China... Let's be real here folks.

There are just so many sales during the holidays to build something, complete components, individual/from scratch builds... I got a Plametto State AR15 complete lower for $120 and a complete Bear Creek BC15 300 Blackout upper for $260. Including taxes, shipping and FFL processing costs I spent a grand total of about $500. Then a 3x magnifier/red dot combo that was already 25% off, with a coupon code for an extra 25% off and bam, optics for $180. I'm very pleased with the holiday sales this year
Hearing protection isn't part of the rifle either, but have fun shooting without that I guess. No one said you absolutely need a chest rig but it sure would be helpful for the purposes Lucas is trying to cater towards.
It is rewarding to build your own but if u can get complete upper built is usually cheaper. I realy like bk firearms and spend my money on a good trigger and bolt carreir.

Because outside of this video, Captain McTightpants wouldn't be caught dead with a non Gucci rifle. In the teenage gun culture 2.0 world: massive $$$ = QuAlItY. Even if an M&P Sport II is a legit viable alternative. It'd be great if he would grow up a bit, but he's living high on the hog on his family's virtues. Look at Saint Kyle. That kid got it done with an M&P Sport. Probably didn't have a ton of training, really. Yup. He had a failure (I've had failures with FN and Colt in the heat of the moment), but he applied immediate action and pressed. Point? Heart and a decent amount of good training means much more than spending $$$ ever will. But, this is a concept that Captain McTightpants NEVER says (or will say), yet Mike Jones (GarandThumb) always pushes (nowadays, anyways).
@@MrBeachDoctor this guys a shill. He is so out of touch with the average person to where he thinks that the only option is to break the bank. He thinks 150$ for a pair of ironsights is necessary...
Yes you can. You're bringing things into account that are part of an overall system. Chest rig, spare mags, ammo, etc, are not part of the build and I think alot of people will echo that when you're talking about building a rifle for $1000.
I bought a M&P 15 a couple years ago as a base to start my build and I've put that thing through hell and I have never once had any issues with it. Shooting comps, Weekly drills, Thousands of rounds. Summer hot and winter cold, It's never failed me once. You just got to keep in oiled clean and maintained like any other AR platform and you have yourself a very stable platform! I have some drills on my channel.
Coming from a college student, be selective about where you go cheap. Good to go cheap: lower receiver, spring, tube, stock, iron sites, ammo Bad to go cheap: barrel, bcg, optic Just get a running rifle to start with and start practicing as you add the rest. You can practice reloads and stance with nothing but a complete lower. That's what I did. Note: iron sights is on the cheap list as in context of choosing them over an optic.
One suggestion... Don't cheap out on your buffer spring, or really any spring for that matter. The difference between a "cheap" spring and a quality spring is typically just a couple of dollars, and it's a small price to pay to ensure that the force literally cycling your rifle is a quality piece. SpringCo buffer springs are $20, and worth every penny.
I think essentially what this video proves is that yes... you can buy or build something for about 1k with cost effective parts and have a great starting point. However, the more important thing to consider is Range time and moving dynamically and training and having the defensive or offensive mindset. The fact you can run these drills with a basic build, iron sights and two magazines demonstrates training is more valuable than the Gucci sword. Building muscle memory with reloads, getting on target and getting of the X.
I like how you highlight Sport but just gloss over the M&P... you know the Military and Police part. That implies the weapon is for War, Defense or Sport, I.e. it will fit your needs/wants whatever they are. You wanna Plink or 3-Gun, you can do that. You need to legally defend yourself, it can do that too and if China invades and you need to attack then it can do that too. It likely isn't the best option for any of these but it'll do in a pinch.
Lucas tells the truth about the terms “sport” and “sporting” in the industry and how it affects the 2nd amendment perception and culture. I appreciate the TREX ARMS stance and conviction and gun owners need to follow suit.
I love how you and your crew there at T-Rex arms Care more about getting good product quickly to the consumer more than you care about getting your name out there! America needs more companies like yours! 👍🙂
This rifle is meant to be stacked “deep” as James Wesley-Rawles would say. If there is a WOL event this would be the rifle to give a neighbor to help defend your neighborhood
Thats exactly what we did during the BLM riots. 4 of us had night vision, but we just acted as forward observers for the other employees without night vision who got spare rifles and 9mm carbines we had. All they had was a basic instruction on how to use. As soon as they saw our visible lasers they knew where to shoot. This kept our multi-million dollar workplace free of looting for the full 96 hours that police were held back from stopping any crime in the city. Luckily looting didn't happen during the day (which I don't really understand, as it was a literal WORL situation) so we just slept during the day with just two man shifts, and killed all the lights at night.
I have the M&P15 as my first AR. So far I love it as it was a cheap introduction to the life. Ive put around 5k rounds through it, cleaned it twice, once after buying, and again around 3500. Ammo simply isn’t part of the cost of a build. A chest rig, night vision or body armor isn’t included in the price of a build.
That’s called smart, not apologetic,

@@brachcooper4203 agreed I rather not beat someone too death like in the wars before guns. rather use a gun in war then my fist or something sharp.
Let me give you an Example do you think that an Invicta Automatic Watch that retails for 200 dollars and Looks like a Rolex Submariner is Going to Performed the Same way as a 12,000 dollar Rolex? They both tell time but the Rolex can go down 200-300 meter Underwater without issues the Invicta might be able to go 150-200 meter a few times before the Seals FAIL!

Problem solved and now you have got an upgraded barrel and still have a great rifle that will outlive you. I see nothing but positives with making this purchase.
Ammo and kit are part of a rifle load out, but not part of the rifle build. You can use the same armor/etc with multiple rifles.

@@three5581 exactly I right now have over 3000 rounds through mine. With no internal upgrades, and still no malfunctions.
This was a great video to watch. It's nice to see Lucas run a less expensive set up.

When people get big like this they really turn their noses up at budget firearms gear. Yes, you can build a solid rifle for $1000 lol
I love his content. He isnt wrong per say but I can confirm my rifle was around $1,000 and is rock solid.
Effectively all you need is a bare Bones m&p 15 with a cheap set of irons and you have a rifle that you can shoot as is..
🎯
Not trying to turn my nose up.... But I had a sub $1000 build for my first rifle. 5-6k rounds through it. After two years dropped $4000 full build. The differnce is night and day. I am not the best shooter out there but can gaurntee that the build/price level matters.
$120 anderson lower
$380 PSA upper w/irons
$70 optic (Romeo 5 from ebay or a clone)
$30 Amazon sling
$25 Magpul knockoff foregrip from Amazon
$60 5 pmags
$90 120 rounds of 5.56
$10 pewpew lube
It ain't much but it'll do
Nice. Only thing that bothers me is that price of ammo😬 It's still not as cheap as before, but you should be able to find it under .50 a round.
Solid video
9800 rounds is really good, I wonder how many rounds it’ll last before it keyholes

Bro to be honest you can build your M&p into a Highend rifle just as better as the BCM

This is what i love, seeing a man who can train with anything and be proficient with it
I’d honestly never expect an optic to hold zero once it has come off the gun. There’s just too many variables that have nothing to do with the optics construction.
Man the production especially the audio quality in this is crisp. Y'all have outdone yourselves. This is one of my favorite videos from you guys.
Awesome training, range and equipment advice. It's clear you have so much time invested in your craft. Godspeed!
Nice I run a lot of mag pull moe stuff on my rifles and there stocks are hella comfy
I like PSA stripped uppers and lowers I run them on a few of my rifles
Spent more on the sight than the rifle itself, you love to see it haha
@@Phoros yep hahaha
@@DragonBallStrike I run a vortex red dot, but man I fell in love with the Huey after using it in R6 Siege. Do you run the micro magnifier or the older version?
Genuine question, how often are you removing an optic from a rifle and not throwing it on another rifle? I don't understand the practical application of having an optic return to zero. I have a few rifles with very different roles, and different optics tailored to those roles. I feel like the only people that would benefit are guys with tons of rifles and tons of optics.
agree

I'm sure there are plenty of subscribers that own or would purchase that rifle, and an honest review after a few thousand rounds would be sweet.

I chose the DB-15. Looking forward to how it performs.
Good to go cheap: lower receiver, spring, tube, stock, iron sites, ammo
Bad to go cheap: barrel, bcg, optic
Just get a running rifle to start with and start practicing as you add the rest.
SpringCo buffer springs are $20, and worth every penny.
ehh, i wouldnt go to cheap on ammo.. a new shooter encountering a squib would definitely blow up their gun.

@@50shadesofcerakote and I don't mean cheap reloads, I mean wolf, tula, brass fmj type stuff

Can we get a list to all these to build? Thanks!
UA-cam actually doesnt allow it
Some channels get away with it but others get struck for putting anything in the description
Good question!
These things are in the trunk of many patrol vehicles. Gun snobs are the worst.
