This piece of advice will help those high driver strikes. The other point to note is tee height. Aim to have only 1/2 the ball about above the driver face. I generally above the pink castle tees. Great video as always Rick - I've been struggling with the driver in that I am consistently hitting the extreme heel (basically a shank), resulting in a very weak high slice thanks to gear effect. Only club I'm having this problem with. Ideas, help?
+Damian Scisci chances are the driver is probably too long for you. If it's standard 45.5", this is too long for most players. I'm 5'10" and play 44.5" and could probably benefit from 44". A guy at my shop is 6'3" and plays a 43.5". Just a thought. If you do shorten it just be sure to add some lead tape to the head
Thanks for this advice. I am somewhat experienced and good with my irons, but have been having a struggle with hitting high and inside on the face for months on my driver. Have attempted to change ball/tee position, level of attack, distance away from ball and just about everything else. None seem to prevent hitting high and inside. I am hoping this will help next time at the range.
Great vid Rick .... it's a massive problem of mine having come from sports where you have to be shoulder dominant .... trying to keep my trail shoulder quite is so hard for me . I have found the biggest help is keeping my back too the target for longer and letting the hands drop . Before I rotate
Hi Rick. I've been having some driver issues lately. Hitting high on the face. Watched your driver videos. Changed my set up a little and my grip. The results have amazed me. Also the new grip has me hitting amazing high flighing iron shots which travel long and stop on the green. Thanks ever so much. Roy Jones.
I was initially told by my coach to try and feel like your hips were pointing left and shoulders pointing right at impact which really helped get my body more in sequence
This is just what I’ve been doing lately, 18 holes yesterday with 18 sky drives, going to try this today and hopefully get my distances back. Thank you
Like the video very much...because my driver once had marks on top of the club head...Thanks to tips from Rick and Pete I learned to find the correct path...my current driver is pristine...looks much better with no scratch marks...
Thanks Rick! This is exactly what i am doing right now. Moving that back shoulder through way to fast and hitting underneath the ball every time! Gotta learn to keep my back shoulder from moving through the ball until the last second. Gotta let that back shoulder be patient! Thank you.
I realize this video was posted a year ago...but I have to say, @RickSheilsGold your videos are going to help my driving game tremendously. Everything from this video, to the slicing series, I can tell is what I am doing wrong. I can't wait to put these tips into effect. Unfortunately we just had 17 inches of snow drop on the first day of spring, so it'll have to wait. But I appreciate you for these videos. Thank you sir! Troy from USA
Thanks, Rick. This is exactly what I needed to hear. Been killing my shots but when I get to driver I hit high on the face so my ball flies 260-280 then stops on the ground, when I know I can do better than that. Gonna work on this now. i appreciate the video.
Just dented the hell out of my new “cheaper” Callaway Strata driver...my swing is wrong and I swing down to the ball and smacked the bottom....pretty bummed out. Time for some lessons! Thanks for the tips Rick!
Been doing this for 2 months. Tried different tee heights different ball position, you name it. Nothing has helped. Other than that my game has been solid. Not bad when you’re still able to par or bogie with a 75 yard drive 😊
Thanks Rick. I've been struggling with this and had lessons but not sorted. Mine are sky and heel almost on shaft. Horrible so hope your tip helps as this one shot is ruining my golf.
This is exactly what I do. I don't understand how to keep the right shoulder quiet or back. Been watching a bunch of videos finally found one that explains my problem but don't understand how to fix it.
Rick, thanks for this video. I think another issue with poor driver hits is that players must realize the player's head must stay behind the ball during the swing on a driver. During an iron swing we're all taught to keep the hands ahead of the club head, which can result in amateurs moving their head ahead of the ball too. However, during the driver swing it is imperative to keep the head behind the teed up ball to hit the ball on the up swing with the driver. As you point out, a steep swing results when the right shoulder gets to quick. I believe the player's head also tends to get ahead of the ball if the right shoulder is "released" too early in the downswing. When the head is kept behind the ball it's difficult to release the right shoulder too soon. Do you agree?
Doing something similar at the moment, have the dropkick and high face impact, playing partners had mentioned I was dropping my right should so hopefully your video will help me sort it out! great videos Rick
Hi Rick, I have a fairly slow swing speed, could you please do a video covering steel Vs graphite shafts of different stiffnesses with regard to swing tempo. Cheers, Ken
That is what it feels like to me when I do that. It helps me to think about dropping my right elbow to my side. That delays my shoulder turn just a bit. If only I could do it every time. 🤔😁
I’m having this problem. I’m still hitting about 280. Not as far as normal but decent. I feel like I’m hitting pretty close to center as I’m feeling the ball compress pretty well. I’ve tried teeing it down and up and getting the same result either way.
my longest/straightest/most consistent drives come from a slightly high slightly toey strike. i dont think strike is a one spot is best for everyone as swings are so different
I struggle with this shot occasionally, and get high left pulls. This usually happens when I try to force or hit hard at the ball. I noticed, when you played this shot and showed the demo, your left wrist was bowed. Do you have any specific drills at keeping the left shoulder back a little longer, please.
So.. doesn't a slightly higher strike increase launch and reduce spin? I am not talking about a sky shot .. but a shot out of the center slightly high is better than slightly low due to gear effect. Please share your thoughts.. angle of attack is just as important as strike with driver
What youre saying is true, however doing so makes you lose ball speed as its not the hottest part of the face.. Im a bit same but i was advised not to catch it high in the face as it reduces ball speed..
What if I’m not coming over top confirmed by track man but I’m still hitting exactly middle high very time was told I’m dragging the handle to much.. any recommendations? Thx
Hi Rick avid watcher of your, and Pete's blogs. Had a nightmare recently with struggling to get any distance. Understand its about contact not power but still struggled. Watched this vid' went down the range and "hey presto" problem was right shoulder. Thanks a lot. Keep up the great work.
So, upon address I should be a few inches behind the ball so that club face connection is during the upper part of swing to achieve less topping of the ball.
I’ve stopped using* my driver because of this issue. The top of my driver is all scuffed with bad shots lol. My driver technique right now is great for wedge shots 😂
So what if I hit it solid but it still skies?.. my problem is I hit a drive 280-300 but my balls are nearly hitting the moon along the way and it seems like they slow down because it’s going so high.. I have hit them straight and low and I don’t know how.. but my drives have been 320-350+ when I do strike it that way.. any advice?

Rick Shiels Golf does this drill help a slice aswell as a high strike? As I struggle with a slice

BEST piece of advice EVER. Coupled with 'hinging' right arm away from body has led to massive improvement. MASSIVE. Thank you SO much.

You've come along way Rickie Shiels, funny watching the old content V current day stuff. Well done mate.

I was also hitting top of club face. I lowered the tee and addressed the ball about 6inch further back. Worked ok for me😊.

Lol should’ve watched this before I broke my driver head off
Im on my third driver, i started golfing last year…..
Excellent video Rick. Hopefully you've solved my driver problem!
Just dented the hell out of my new “cheaper” Callaway Strata driver...my swing is wrong and I swing down to the ball and smacked the bottom....pretty bummed out. Time for some lessons! Thanks for the tips Rick!
best driver video I have ever seen because this will help golfers with a slice also because it will square you up at impact good stuff Rick
Good advise as ever Rick.
Great advice watched it about 10 times will practice this and it will be my only swing thought

Thanks for the video Rick, massive problem of mine hitting to high on the driver and hitting the hosel.

I really want to see a review on the new srixon's irons! keep up the good work👊👌
Thanks Rick, great advice!
Rick very good tips thank you, , since we want to hit more down with the irons, is the shoulder movement any different?
Doing something similar at the moment, have the dropkick and high face impact, playing partners had mentioned I was dropping my right should so hopefully your video will help me sort it out! great videos Rick
Super lesson Rick just what I needed will work on this.
Thanks Rick , very good advice well explained
Yea I have to talk my solders into hanging back on all my clubs. When my shoulders get to far ahead I usually just to the ball. ThNks for the info
Thank you, Rick.
Exactly what I’ve been wor king on and has transformed my game. Well articulated good job. 👍🏻
Thank You...Fixed a 10 plus year problem
Perfect timing for this vid, thanks Rick. Been struggling with this a little of late.
Great explanation, thanks! That is exactly what I was doing last night at the driving range.
Rick how did you know! I have been doing this the past week ill definitely try this tomorrow
Thanks Rick, thats one of my big problems along with coming over the top! but from what your saying its the same problem #hatingcomingoverthetop
Thanks Rick for the info i have been having this odd shot in the round and its very annoying. Thanks again ;)
Great video! Love watching the old ones fom the P.B. ( pre-beard ) era - freaks me out 😂
GREAT video, that's exactly what I've been doing!! Thanks for the tip and help!!
Really enjoying your videos, Rick. One of the problems I have with my driver is hitting the ground before striking the ball. Why does that happen?
This actually helps me a bunch. Thanks
Hi Rick,
I have a fairly slow swing speed, could you please do a video covering steel Vs graphite shafts of different stiffnesses with regard to swing tempo.

1:28 my average drive
me too lol
Thanks your tip works
awesome fix, thanks!

good video that what i needed help with!!
I struggle hitting the ball off the top of the face but the club tends to hit the ground before the tee. Can you do a vid on that pls?
Literally imagined what he said in my head and ball went straight.
That's exactly what I do and always thought I was teeing it to high and I was coming underneath the ball snapping the tee
whenever I try to keep my right shoulder back I hit a snap hook.
Thanks worked Perfect

Does keeping the right shoulder down through the downswing also help for irons? Or is this tip for driver only?
Yuhao Ding you only have one swing :)

interesante todo porque no le saca traducción al español en subtitulado.
GRACIAS

That King Cobra bag covered in the back is new. When will the one length iron review be released?
1:28 lol there’s a drive!
I’ve stopped using* my driver because of this issue. The top of my driver is all scuffed with bad shots lol. My driver technique right now is great for wedge shots 😂
I haven't done this in quite awhile. But it happened to me twice today and I dented my new driver 😢😢😢
Now I know
Appreciate this. I am absolutely horrid with a driver. I mean embarrassingly bad
So what if I hit it solid but it still skies?.. my problem is I hit a drive 280-300 but my balls are nearly hitting the moon along the way and it seems like they slow down because it’s going so high.. Love these vids Rick!!
Why did you move locations? Weren't you in Manchester somewhere?
This is me 100% - need to hold back that right shoulder impulse to hit.
This is my current big miss. Based on your description its likely my improved iron game has resulted in swinging drives like an iron
Same. Why can't it all just work together!?
You look so weird when I watch an old video of yours now it's like your voice but I'm like is that rick 😂😂 what a difference a beard makes
for f..k sake Rick, you were so young :D
Babyfaced Shiels :D
I try this setup. but still hit the ground or top of driver.... will keep trying
I thought i clicked on the wrong video 😅 rick you look great! Maybe its the clean shave but you look so thin. Slight rory vibes
Please mention about striking too low on driver face ............
Single length irons!!! I know I have them!
This isn’t Rick, this guy doesn’t have a beard 🤣
Rick, I know this is an older video by the no beard!! Could hardly tell it was you!
Didn’t know there was a bottom of the driver face !!! I hit mine at the very top
My miss is a low heel. It’s so annoying!
Lol, I just tee it lower
Its not working for me teeing it lower
I hit my first drive in comp 100m high and 100m forward recently... how embarrassing
Still in play though. 2 irons onto the green. 2 putts and bogie. Next hole.
Watching this 5 years later…he needs the beard or he’s not Rick Shiels🤣
I'm doing this...got to quit
Where are the quest for the open vlogs ???????
Don't understand why you haven't won a major!
geez who the hell is this young skinny guy!
rich is that you??? so young and slim
