Being on a Ventilator, as Explained by Coronavirus Survivor

- Nic Brown thought he was suffering from the flu, until he checked into the Cleveland Clinic and got some bad news. The doctor told him that he had tested positive for COVID-19, and shortly thereafter, he started to lose lung function and needed to be intubated. He spent three days in a medically-induced coma, and spent an additional seven days on a ventilator. Luckily, he came out on the other side alive. So, what does it feel like to be on a ventilator? We spoke with Nic Brown to find out. #InsideEdition
My dad was put on a Ventilator and now is taken off of it because he has recovered. My grandpa however is still on one fighting for his life. I can't imagine what he's going through, but just fighting it alone. Please everyone be careful
My grandpa is 91 and has been isolated in his home with my uncle for over a month now... hoping with all my heart that he doesn't get sick...
I hope your grandpa recovers ... stay strong, my friend 💜🖤💜
Yeah, elderly is the most vulnerable
Is your grandpa still on the ventilator??
Is he ok now ??
Is he okay???????????

Very scary. Imagine being put in a medically induced coma and not knowing if you will even come out of it and ever see your loved ones again. This is truly terrifying. I have a baby due in 5 weeks and I so badly want to avoid the hospital or leaving my house at all right now

I was awakened after surgery and still had a ventilator. I immediately became violent, panicking trying to rip it out. I'm terrified of that feeling again. MAY YOU ALL BE SAFE AND HEALTHY
Omg I know that feeling!
I pulled my ventilator out once I woke up
@@adamvega775 you have done the right thing. That ventilator could have killed you.
@@UpliftUtopia99 yeah man I was asleep for 2 weeks and a doctor lowered the medicine that was keeping me asleep and I'm guessing I woke up and pulled that tube out my throat and the rest is history. So happy that he’s recovered! I hope that everyone stays healthy and safe
Well rounded ☺
Does everyone recover Linda?
Having the ventilator removed is like having the doctors pull a balloon on a thick straw up from your lungs. I will never forget that feeling. I didn’t have COVID-19 but I went into cardiac arrest and almost died.
Same! I was so scared when they told me they going to remove the ventilator and change it to bipap.

@@EarthSurferUSA yes, and this info was even printed in the USA Today in April of 2020. I know some dude who went to prison for robbing a bank I could've sworn faked going on a ventilator in the ICU. There had to be some money in it for him.
I also was in hospital the last 6 weeks for covid bilaterial pneumonia. Also on a ventilator for part of the time. I woke up while intubated and panicked. It was so scary. No one told me what had happened and where I was. I couldn't sleep for about 4-5 days waiting for them to remove the intubation tube. It was really scary. Please stay safe everyone.
My grandpa was just put on one.. is there hope? He is 78 and has kidney problems as well this is one of the hardest things I’ve faced he’s such a good man and always helping everyone and now he is alone and I hate this!
Honestly his age might play a large factor. But praying for you.
I also was in a medically induced coma and was placed on a ventilator due to being asthmatic and Covid. Very uncomfortable and life changing. Kinda thought covid was a joke but absolutely not and I'm only 25

Aaliyah Varona Did she make it I hope?
Did she make it
dillydong yes she did, and I’m so happy. Now she’s doing lung and muscle therapy for recovery.
@@aaliyahvarona5409 ohh. What's lung muscle therapy. Could you tell me what precautions u took after she was affected
dillydong Sure. So COVID-19 affected her lungs in a way which made them smaller. It basically destroyed her lung tissue, and this causes difficulties in breathing for her. So the doctor has given her some breathing exercises & medicine to help restore normal breathing. She’s also currently attached to a oxygen tank and walks with it everywhere. That’s lung therapy. Muscle therapy is simply exercises to help with normal muscle movement. She spent a month on a ventilator and in a coma and some of her limbs she can barely move. We took a lot of precautions before she was hospitalized. We wore masks, disinfected the entire house daily, quarantined, and only went out when it was necessary. It’s still the same precautions afterwards, only that she does not go out anymore. That’s the only change in the precautions. I am thinking that she caught the virus on a trip to the store.
GOD BLESS THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO LIVE THRU THIS ORDEAL WITH A VENTILATOR AND COMA.
Thank you for your story. My brother in law is only in his 30's and was put on a ventilator this afternoon and this helps all our teenagers understand the severity but not be terrified. I'm glad you made it through and I hope we have the same outcome
What was his pre-existing conditions if there were any?
my brother had no preexisting conditions, healthy 30 year old, and was almost sent for his oxygen dropping lower than normal. no asthma, previously told he is very healthy, no diabetes no smoking, so no preexisting conditions. it's just the fact that covid is horrible and the proof is in the pudding! and dumb ignorant people dont want to open their eyes to see it. and you all want proof? i also had covid, caught it from the brother i am speaking about. so like kabby, there ya'll go!
Thanks for sharing your story, it gives me a little hope. my brother in law is ventilated today and I was completely heartbroken. May God recover who is suffering from COVID 19.

I was put on the ventilator with Covid an double phnemonia. It was so very scary. I was under for 12 days an then had to fight to get my energy back.
I could not communicate at all. I was paralyzed and kept under.
When they started to wake me I could hear the nurses but couldn’t move. I thought I’d be like that forever. It’s being trapped in your self and can’t communicate at all. Yep.
He found out he had Covid and immediately felt like dying so they had to
He probably already in very severe state when he got tested.
Ya seems weird and only 3 days on the ventilator. He recovered rather quickly
leazzel7 he was on the ventilator for a week, ‘only’ in medically induced coma for 3 days.
They should also say how they think they got it so we can all have an idea of how to deal with it other thatn the social distance
Simple he was in close contact with someone and/or didn’t wash his hands
My parents tested positive for it and they only ever left the house for groceries and gas. The virus enters the body through openings like your eyes, nose, mouth, so my advice would be to thoroughly wash your hands before touching your face or eating. If you can stay away from the grocery store in general, then please do
There is another video where he explains more of his story (check out Cleveland clinics UA-cam channel). He was the first tested positive in Ohio and he lives in a very rural area so he has no idea where he picked it up from.

I was on the vent for 8 days due to covid, bacterial pneumonia and septicemia. It's been a year and a half now and I struggle daily w/ memory issues and cognitive problems. Then there is the nice dose of PTSD that came from it that can pop up at a mere though. The smell of hand sanitizer and things that sound like the IV beeping. I was out the whole time I was on the vent but was given fentanyl to keep me sedated. I had MAJOR nightmarish hallucinations from it and still struggle to know what was real and what wasn't when I first woke back up. All in all I was in hospital and rehab a total of 24 days. It was horrible and I don't even remember the weeks leading up to it because I was so sick.
Having the tube removed was the single most painful thing I've ever had. I've had 2 back surgeries w intubation, 3 kids and 2 tooth abscesses prior.... NOTHING compares to that pain. My voice is still raspy and weaker than prior and it will never be normal again.
I was on a Ventilator for over 2 weeks in a Coma. They had to remind me to breathe once I was taken off the Ventilator. Your brain doesn't function properly and I had to re-learn all motor skills. Now I have 2 Lung Disease's and Severe Asthma all caused from the Ventilator. I've NEVER smoked 1 day in my LIFE. I can no longer work cause I have to use a machine 4-5 times each day to help me breathe. Ventilators suck!
Why can't they talk more about what they did to help him recover maybe we can learn something also how do we know he's exactly cured?
They kept him alive. A ventilator, IV fluids, heart monitor, etc. That’s all that can really be done right now with this virus... life support until your body either gets better on its own or dies.
They know he’s cured when a test of his blood 3 days running shows no presence of the virus. Keep in mind he will not be fully recovered for a while, if ever. Lung scar tissue = reduced lung function, for life.
9 years ago I was on a ventilator for a month after a nasty case of pneumonia. Words really fail to describe how awful it is. It was the worst experience of my life and I’ve been through a fair bit.
I’ve been on a vent but not on a vent when I had COVID. I Was hospitalized for 8 days. It’s scary though being on one. It hurts, my mouth was dry and I yearned for water. It’s liberating to be have it taken out and being able to breath on my own.
Stay safe and healthy everyone! This is so scary. 💜🙏🏼
I just came off about a month ago. A tracheostomy was attempted but failed. I was healthy didn't smoke no underlined issues. Lost 40lbs in two weeks, and still dealing with the aftermath. People this stuff is not a joke I promise you.
I've been on a ventilator before not from covid, but from surgery I had, it is one of the most uncomfortable experiences ever. You can't swallow without moving every tube in you and it's so pressed up against your throat that you can develop sores if you move it too much but rather that than to stop breathing
My favorite video about Cleveland and Covid is the Cleveland EMS telling the covid caller to walk to the ER through the city.

I had brain surgery and remembered having one. I was so heavily sedated that I didn't even know what it was. When I had friends and family visit me in the hospital, I kept telling them, get the gum out of my mouth. They kept repeating that it wasn't gum, it was a breathing tube. The nurses were aggressive and told me I had to pass a breathing test before they could pull it out. Thank God I passed it.
Thank you for sharing this. It is a frightening experience. How terrifying. I don't know how I would handle it.
He doesnt even talk about how must times they have to tie your wrists to the bed, that way you dont remove the tubes. My gf is an ICU nurse and does this intubation process to people right now.
