Why is pneumonia so dangerous? - Eve Gaus and Vanessa Ruiz

- Explore how pneumonia attacks the tiny air sacs in your lungs and how your immune system works to fight off the infection.
--
Every time you breathe, air travels down the trachea, through a series of channels, and then reaches little clusters of air sacs in the lungs. These tiny sacs facilitate a crucial exchange: allowing oxygen from the air we breathe into the bloodstream and clearing out carbon dioxide. Pneumonia wreaks havoc on this exchange system. Eve Gaus and Vanessa Ruiz detail how pneumonia attacks the lungs.

Can also happen in a cave where it's +50°C and very humid
You can be seemingly fine for a few minutes up to some hours (at most is 2 whole days) after the incident that caused water to enter your respiratory system. There’s two forms of it. Dry drowning & Secondary drowning. (Dry drowning typically takes less time to show signs of a problem) They’re both rare conditions but it’s more common in children since their lungs are smaller, however, adults are not exempt from it. It can be potentially fatal if left untreated. Water is scary y’all

I had pneumonia when I was 8 yrs old, I still remember the intense pain and difficulty while trying to breathe. It was the most painful and horrible thing I have ever felt. My condition was so bad that I had to stay a 8 days in the hospital with 2 tubes coming out of the side of my ribcage to drain out the fluid in my lungs. It was horrible

My dad had pneumonia when I was either in middle school or high school. I was definitely younger than I am now. He was sick for a month & my mom took him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with it & spent a week in the ER. During that time, my grandmother stayed at our apartment to watch my brother & I, making sure we got up for school, while my mom stayed at the hospital with my dad while he was recovering. The whole time I, along with my brother, grandmother & mom prayed to God every day & every night, begging him to not take him away from us. He answered our prays & helped my father recover. He was finally discharged after a week & we were all so happy to have him back home. He was still a bit sick, but all he needed was bed rest & medicine from the doctor. He's healthy now & isn't sick anymore. I'm also 20 & I thank God everyday for helping my father recover. He is a very loving husband to my mom & loving father to me & my brother.

Yup
TAKE VITAMIN D SUPLLEMENT IN WINTER, ESCPECIALLY IF MIDDLE OR OLD AGE OR DARKER SKINNED OR SUSCEPTABLE TO ILLNESS.
Had double pneumonia twice in two years with my infection markers literally off the chart (maxed out on scale)
Turned out my body wasn't fighting any pneumococcal so I just got very sick and ended up hospitalised both times.
Best part was my GP turned me away 3 times saying I was fine despite me explaining I was constantly vomiting and hadn't eaten for a week and coughing and couldn't breath and having to get a taxi to the local surgery as I couldn't walk.
In the end I got a taxi to the hospital and the guy I saw didn't even examine me and just got me a bed immediately I must have looked so ill by that stage.
Best part was the practice manager went off on me for complaining and the only reason I didn't sue was because I didn't want to take money out of the NHS.
At the end of my second stint (10 days in hospital) they got this cartoon sized syringe (enormous) and stuck it in my back to drain my lungs.
It filled it with lime green fluid, yum. I couldn't believe all that fluid could be in my lungs or imagine how I managed to breath at all,.
They did tests given I had such severe pneumonia two years running and found the issue with my immune system, they had no explanation, just said stuff happens basically.
I then had pneumonia vaccines which seemed to trigger my immune response to fighting most pneumococcal again.
Unfortunately the specialist centre I needed to go to was a train journey away and I got falsely accused of trying to avoid payment on an appointment so decided I would never use trains again and discharged myself and just hope the vaccines have worked.
They tried to fine me £1,300 even though I actually went to the ticket office and asked for a ticket that covered my cost of my journey without one (I didn't know you needed one to board a train as that law had just come in and I don't use trains normally).
Apparently I got sent a summons for a court date which I never received and the first I knew was a letter in the post saying I had been found guilty and fined in my absence,
I had to fight it all while still recovering and couldn't get any legal help so did it all myself. In the end they said if I paid £40 they would drop it. I wanted to take it to crown court but for decided to just pay as this was the moist cursed of years.
I had also received eviction notice from my flat as landlord decided to sell the property and had my brother pass away.
Amazing what life can throw at you sometimes but here I am, still standing.
I still get a lot of pain from the scarring of my lungs even though it has now been well over a year since my last bout,
I weighed around 11 1/2 stone (around 75 Kilos) before falling ill and well under 9 stone (around 56 Kilos) coming out of hospital and barely able to walk (just a few yards at a time)
As with most people with Covid and other illness it was found I had vitamin D deficiency and put on course of high dosage once out of hospital.
I now take vitamin D supplement in Winter as vitamin D deficiency could well be what triggered my poor immune response to pneumococcal

Had pneumonia when I was about 9 and I can attest, it really feels like you’re dying. I was fine at the beginning of the day, but as it progressed I kept coughing more and more. I went to bed thinking nothing of it because i had been outside all day and it had been really dry. My sister woke me up and was crying, telling me I was barely breathing which scared the life out of me because I really was barely breathing! I got antibiotics and was fine but you never really forget the feeling of that rattle in your chest. I don’t wish that on anybody 🤮

I was a few hours from death due to pneumonia and pluracy caused by flu. I can assure you, it's horrific. It turned my lungs into a tight mess. I could only breath at 5% usual capacity. I was passing out constantly. I would only stay awake to vomit the fluids I had taken in. The cycle went 30 minutes to 1 hour awake where I drank liquids and vomited. When I was done, I would pass out again.

Every day after that I was visited by a lung therapist who would tilt my bed so my feet were above my head, I would lie on my side and breathe out as hard as I could, not coughing but just pushing out air. This caused much of the mucus to fly out. I spent a couple of weeks in hospital and I was good to go. Just some minor scarring on my left lung.

Good video.
Just one point to clarify. At 2:00 you seem to indicate that the patient will start feeling breathless due to accumulation of CO2 - this is incorrect. The reason people feel breathless is due to diminished blood oxygen level so giving them supplemental oxygen helps the symptoms. Retention of CO2 happens much, much later and is a grave complication and usually happens in people with existing lung condition like COPD. It is very unusual to happen in people with normal lungs. Giving oxygen on it's own in this scenario is actually even more dangerous and it is they who are ventilated.
So, in summary, oxygen is given for low blood oxygen and NOT for high blood CO2.
I once got pneumonia, and got cured. I never knew it could be this dangerous.. thank you!

Had pneumonia right before turning 22. I struggled to breath for six months after the infection was gone. Over a year later, I can still feel the effects of having had pneumonia.
I had pneumonia twice in my life, the second time I got it I was 8 years old. I ended up staying from school for almost 2 months. I had a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood and I played with them all the time and I probably touched my face a couple times after petting them.
The cause was you. You didn’t wash your hands before touching your face. Probably picked your nose…

Pneumonia has been a horrifying journey. Had it back when I was 9 and I was hospitalized for around 3 months. At the time I was so scared of dying, seeing all my relatives and friends crying beside my bed. Every day I struggle to even sleep and I could only watch as the clock ticks away from 1 am, 2 am, 3 am... I relentlessly cough and always have the urge to throw up just because the coughing was too intense. Had to take medications almost every few hours and even some injections. I couldn't express how proud I am of myself to have vanquished such an illness and I hope everyone who currently has pneumonia gets well soon and have a nice day. I swear you would never want to have it.
Had this when I was 5 months pregnant. Panting, coughing, fever and to ad insult to injury pee myself constantly. Thank goodness for modern meds!
I had pneumonia for months because my mom just thought I had asthma. I went through multiple inhalers and I was told to “remember to use your inhaler” even if I just used it. And then once I got diagnosed and antibiotics I needed two rounds and three months to fully recover.
Two rounds of what?? Antibiotics??
@@perseusvlasov367 antibiotics, yes.
This is so painful to watch. I just survived a severe pneumonia a couple of months ago that lasted 28 days under strict treatment that almost took me. Good vid, got my Like
I got pneumonia as a baby and I got so sick my dad came to visit me he had stage 4 cancer, and was really sick so he couldn’t travel but he wanted to see me before I died. I know I don’t remember it but he risked a lot just to see me and that still means alot to me.
My grandma passed away due to this last Friday. She initially complained pain in her stomach but didn’t mention the shortness of breath. We changed three local physicians until situation got worsen. Eventually we admitted to nearest hospital where she could survive only two days because it was already too late. Later found out she had pneumonia and had difficulty breathing in the last day. Im so angry by the inability of three physicians who couldn’t detect the symptoms 😡
Watching this on day 3 at the hospital. The first day when I went to ER I thought I was gonna die. It was so bad my oxygen fell to 60 and immediately admitted. After several rounds of IV fluids, antibiotics, steroids I can breathe now. But the inflammatory markers are pretty high. I miss my little kids and husband.praying every sec to go home and appreciate life a little more
I’ve had Phenomena 3 times and each time I had antibiotics they always fixed it don’t stress out too much if you have it as long as you have a good doctor and antibiotics you will be fine it’s hard to deal with and I cried so many times when I had it.
My grandpa is in the hospital with pneumonia right now.😭 I really hope he will be okay.
My mom had pneumonia when I was a kid. Her doctor wanted to hospitalize her, but she refused because there was no one else to take care of me. I remember her coughing so hard, and taking so many medications. There were days when she couldn't even get out of bed. Thankfully she survived, but I remember how awful it all was.
my mom also is suffering from pneumonia and i hope on my f life she’ll be okay
I'm getting a PEG feeding tube because of how many times i aspirate..the NG failed due to how aggressive my Dystonia is, which made the muscles around the tube to go spastic chocking me in the process..i hope my abdomen spasticity won't get worse I'm fading 😢
I had Pneumonia 8 years ago and is horrible because initially you just think it’s the regular flu until you can breathe anymore. Recovery can also be anywhere from a month to 3 months to get back to regular activities. I remember afterwards getting up the stairs was so hard to do and I was winded for a long time afterwards
I had pneumonia once, in the 2 or 3 grade. I remember my doctor thought it was asthma, and gave me an inhaler. After that didn't work, they diagnosed me with pneumonia. I stayed home for a week, and luckily, I got better to a point where I wasn't coughing 24/7. Then I was off to school again 🙄The worst part was the coughing. I was always coughing mucus, and I had to have a bucket near me at all times. I also felt nauseous, and had headaches. I hope none of you ever get it!
I've just had TWO episodes of bacterial pneumonia. The first time I also had pluresy. It was the cruelest thing I have ever experienced .The 2nd episode was about 4 weeks from the first attack. This time I had a triple whammy - pneumonia, asthma and a virus . I'm very lucky the south Australian ambulance service are less than 3 kl from my home. It took the ambo's 5 minutes to arrive and start working on me. then to the hospital in Elizabeth. I'm home now trying to recover - feeling very tired and weak. Feeling very frustrated. I'm 75 years young.
My grandma just passed away from pneumonia 3 days ago, because the hospitals won't accept her because they're scared that she have COVID-19. I haven't even go the chance to talk to her. Rest in peace grandma.
Sorry for your loss...
Rest in peace grandmother excluding that hospital who refused a patient!? 😭
The hospital turned away a possible Covid patient? Seems unlikely.

I just got diagnosed with a mild pneumonia, we caught it on very early. Hopefully it doesn't get worse
This is hard to talk about but, before I was 2 I had pneumonia so I was in the hospital for 2 or 3 years. Since I was this young I didn’t know how to cough up anything and I couldn’t breath so the doctors had to put a pole down my throat to cough for me and with how young I was my body wasn’t even close to being build or ready for this. Luckily the amazing doctors saved my life and I will always be grateful for them. God bless you all❤
Edit: turns out it started when I was 1 year olds

My father got pneumonia after he fall from tree. His right lung was punctured by a bone fracture. In the first few week he was okay and he was given antibiotics, but after 2 months his body is beginning to shutting down from infection.
I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope he gets better 🙏
So sorry to hear this. We hope your dad recovers take time to have real heartfelt conversations with your dad. Thank you for sharing. God bless.
My step father had pneumonia in both his lungs (in Nov 2020!) and it was so stubborn that they had to drain the fluid from his chest cavity manually. Almost immediately after he was able to go off oxygen.
I had pneumonia quite often when I was young. Usually just staying at home and avoiding triggers would do, but sometimes it got so bad that I had to get hospitalised for days. Cold air was a HUGE trigger for me, I sometimes could go all summer without having an episode, but I’d get the worst episodes in winter as it gets petty cold here in Switzerland, so every Christmas break my family would travel to some tropical countries and my condition would get better. When I was around 8 years old, pneumonia suddenly decided to leave me alone, probably because my immune system got stronger, and I could suddenly ski and do all the winter sports without feeling any pain and no choking sensations, it’s awesome :)
I had pneumonia aged 44 living in a four season State and it turned into a really bad pneumonia winter for the State Down Under in 1997. Then again at 54 living in the tropics in 2007. The first time was accompanied by Pleurisy and Asthma, I was in a really bad way. Both times I was hospitalised but never told whether I had viral or bacterial pneumonia. I am guessing viral as I was never given any medication outside of using a nebuliser the first time. The second time was purely to monitor me because no treatment was given. I am surmising pneumonia in the tropics isn't common. I was working with the public the first time and it was a bitterly cold and wet winter and caring for my mother who was living with us the second time.
Pneumonia is no joke yet so many are able to carry on with their normal lives with it, without medical attention. As many actually did in 1997 which made me feel really bad that I couldn't. I even had to miss out on seeing Phantom of the Opera, my husband took his sister instead at least it was her wedding anniversary which didn't impress her husband lol.
Thanks for sharing such an important message

Just a side note for people with pneumonia: Do not take any cough suppressants to clear the fluid in the lungs (like the video said, coughing is a coping method for pneumonia) unless indicated by a doctor.
And brush you teeth!

Bacteria in the mouth can be a contributing factor to pneumonia (not necessarily the cause, but it can make it worse) that's why severe tooth decay can lead to lung issues, because the person is literally inhaling bad bacteria
@@jugemujugemugokonosurikire4735 thank you, contributing like bacteria from the mouth will cause infection added to bacteria already causing the pneumonia ,right ?

I've had pneumonia at least twice. I thought I knew a lot about it, but I learned even more from this video. Thanks.
I had pneumonia about 6 years ago and double covid pneumonia in 2021 double covid pneumonia is worse the pneumonia I had was walking pneumonia it was a streak but still bad just that double covid pneumonia was both lungs and worse
I’ve had pneumonia TWICE in my life. I’m super thankful that I’am alive. Recovery took around 2 months to finally get my lungs strong again.

I had acquired a Community Acquired Pneumonia last August 2009 when I was still studying Nursing course in college. It was difficult to breathe, having a high grade fever and can't even cough out the mucus despite numerous times of drinking 4-5 gallons of water in a day so I won't miss my CAPPing ceremony and also I don't want to be hospitalized at that time knowing I will be missing a lot of lectures and get behind my class. So right after the ceremony at college, I told my mom that I can't stand it anymore and I needed to be hospitalized because of low level of Oxygen in my body.
I had pneumonia when I was 12 years old and still remember how difficult is was to breathe.
I had 103 fever and spent a week in the hospital.
I missed 3weeks of school and had to go to summer school to make up all that time.
I lost my grandma to pneumonia a month before covid came out she was like my mom my grandma my best friend my homie my everything all in one when she left half of me left theres no feeling in the world like being with your grandma rip to all the grandmas 😞 love you grandma
Had pneuomonia on both lungs in summer of 2019. If i literally got it like 70 years before i would've probably died
@suraj tamang no i did not have any breathing problems, i did wim hofs breathing and i took some alternate medicine for boosting the immune system
@suraj tamang only do wim hof guided breathing(search it on youtube) when you start to cough out mucus, i do not suggest while it is still a dry cough. While alternate medicine is based on dr. Schulze's book of remedies(i use immune tonic - it has garlic, onion, chilli peppers, ginger and some other plants in it its really healthy)
@suraj tamang pneumonias cure slow. I was coughing a month after the fever had stopped. I also had to switch coughing medications because one stopped working after a few weeks. Your nose is the main problem, maybe you have a secondary infection comming? I recommend you to buy a syringe and 0.9% NaCl solution, wash out your nose with 3ml in both nostreals 2-3 times a day it really works good, nod your head back and squeeze it in, then open your throat for it to pass out through mouth. Spit everything up and try not to choke on it
I had pneumonia years ago and I'll never forget what it felt like. Death! 😳☠ Being a healthy person, I have never felt so bad in my life and I was coughing out blood and couldn't breathe. I think I caught it while at my old job at the time because the air was always filled with smoke from customers smoking all the time and I would be there for hours or someone could have been sick around me. I'm glad I decided to quit!
same symptoms as me. I caught it on a plane. man next to me was coughing a lot and just visited Thailand
Not likely caused from second hand smoke. If that were true, smokers would constantly be getting it.
I remember I got pneumonia when I was 7. I honestly cannot remember anything other than that I coughed and needed an inhaler. My mom was really worried, but I was clueless had no idea what was going on. I'm glad I didn't know how serious it was and that I recovered from it.
I had pneumonia about 4 years ago. I now know what it feels like to start dying from this. Terrifying.
I got pneumonia during spring break in high school. Around the last day before break, I felt awful in gym. While my family was out of town, I spent 2 weeks at my grandma's, struggled to stay hydrated, and had regular IV appointments.
Ironicly, after I recovered and was back in school, we were covering the resphitory system in anat & phiz and learned about pnemonia.
My pappa died of pneumonia. Now i knew why he was breathing faster. The oxygen wasn't reaching his body and within 6 hours the condition became so worse that he didn't make it. I'm just 24 and beleive me, without father, life isn't easy.
May your father rest in peace.
My mother is infected with Covid and we bought a oximeter for her to monitor her blood oxygen level. When her levels droped below normal I knew she was in danger and rushed to call the ambulance for emergency oxygen. She's in hospital now recovering from lung damage due to pneumonia.

I am asking because my dad passed away 3 weeks back due to pneumonia post covid. He was on NIV. Situation in India is so bad that we couldn't find a bed with invasive ventilator. So, I just wanted to know if people actually survive after getting covid pneumonia..more like if my dad could have been saved or not?
@@ashwitarao3472 Sadly my mother died on 2nd May. She was in ICU for 20 days and 7 days in invasive ventilation.

When the damage is done the lungs gets scarred even if the virus is gone, which makes the gas exchange very difficult which ultimately lead to septic shock as CO2 builds up in the body.
When I was 3 or 4 (somewhere round that age) I caught pneumonia twice so watching this made me realise how lucky I am to not drown on land.
Just found out my dad contracted Pneumonia, this was really helpful to understand what it does. Thank you
Backstory: i was 3,5 when i moved with my parents to London from Poland.
I was born with pneumonia and other stuff thats too complicated for me to understand .
When we moved, i was perfectly fine. Obviously i had normal sicknesses like colds etc.
In 2018 (9 years later) my sister, my mum and me all moved to poland again (my dad stayed for another like 3 years but hes back with us now). After we moved back i started to get REALLY sick again. Not only did i find out i had asthma, hayfever and genetic migraines (i knew i had migraines it just wasnt diagnosed), but i also had pneumonia A LOT. I had never really taken seriously the fact that people die from it. I only now realised I technically couldve too. I literally in the time period of like 3-4 months i had pneumonia 3 TIMES. like seriously, i had it, then i was healthy, then i had it again etc. i was on so many antibiotics it honestly made me and my parents kind of angry and annoyed. I had it quite a few times before and after that too and i would say it is a HORRIBLE feeling (obviously i know its not supposed to be pleasant), but in this case its one of those things i wouldve wish on any of my enemies.
I honestly am not sure why i wanted to share this, but i honestly feel like now im an expert at knowing when i have it or when im starting to get it. Its weird.
As a child from age 6 to age of 9 or even 10, I had about 2 pneumonias per year. My immune system was literally as if I was HIV positive. If another kid sneezes or has some sort of a rash , I'm next in line to get it.
The cure however was quite simple. Each year my parents started taking me to sea for a week (breathing the iodine vapor/salt from the area + the sun exposure in the non dangerous hours ), then right after we are back from the coastline in our city , they would send me to my grandma who was living in a mountain village that had paved roads up to 2km heights.
TLDR: The air pressure and change of climate from the altitude did wonders for my immune system. On a side note: Being scared of Trash19 virus is rather amusing to me , having been needled with Penicillin and Gentamicin regularly while getting all kinds of skin diseases due to poor immune system.
Last year in September I had pneumonia and an UTI, I felt awful. I was in a lot of pain, it was hard to sleep and I was constantly nauseous. I was so happy when I finally started to feel better.
Hi i had the same combination too. I kept getting UTIs and till now if I'm in an environment that has a few greenary or trees I get shortness of breath. It's like i need constant clean air to breathe. At work my colleagues smoke alot and I used to come home feeling breathless. I had to quit work just because of it.
I got viral pneumonia from COVID-19 in January 2021. My (hopefully) last trip to the pulmonologist is November 9th. It's been a rough year. Stay healthy folks!
How’d you overcome it? Any remedies you care to share?

@@SmilingIbis did you have a long hospital stay or was it not a super severe case?
@@SmilingIbis my mother is currently in the er and is doing okay, low grade fever, etc, but her lungs concern me. Was wondering if you had any tips to help someone like her?
@@HenryBenedictUSA I didn't go to the hospital. I got one of those blood oxygen things for the fingertip and never went below 91, though later my doctor asked why and I said that I didn't think I was dying (and hospitals were pretty full with really very sick people at that time). I only went to the hospital after I had a couple seizures likely caused by bits of blood clots from the lung floating up to my brain (twice). Fortunately, I recovered quickly and was discharged in a day. They called these TIAs and not strokes, so I lucked out.
Sorry to hear about your mother, but one thing that helped me was that, while 60, I had few other health problems going into it--no high BP and only 20 lbs overweight, never smoked, no immune system problems or heart disease. I do hope your mother recovers from this, but other than the medical treatments the doctors offer, I'm not sure what to say. A lot of quack remedies are floating around the internet, often pushed by people who seem to be attention driven more than scientific.
thank u TED-ED, truly. this video was so so helpful for my project, and i am glad that you are trying to spread the message of this horrible infection since pneumonia is a silent killer.
