    One of the finest performances of this famous work I have ever heard. It's almost as if Mahler himself were conducting!

    como me gusta cuando un director tiene las ideas claras y no intenta cosas extrañas, y no es que le deba una "fidelidad" a la partitura a rajatabla, sino que a partir de las notas exprese las ideas del compositor sean estas buenas, sublimes, vulgares o fallidas. Tampoco es que un intérprete abjure de su individualidad por ello, se nota en Saraste firmeza y sobriedad, pero al mismo tiempo gran intensidad, sabe "narrar", sin que caiga el interés en ningún momento, incluso en obras intrincadas y a veces incoherentes como son las sinfonías de Mahler. Excelente versión, sin reverencias ni retóricas, pero al mismo tiempo clara, con la tensión justa para no pasarse en lo expresivo y atender a los aspectos líricos de cada episodio. Lo estoy disfrutando mucho. Gracias.

      Are you kidding? Mahler in many people,s opinion was the greatest composer of symphonies by any classical composer of all time, and it can now be finally proven !!!!!

    This is a good performance, but why is it listed as being in Cb minor?! That isn't accurate for any of the movements. Moreover, Mahler himself didn't want the key specified: "to avoid misunderstandings the key should best be omitted."

    • @WDRKlassik
      @WDRKlassik  3 роки тому +11

      Hi, Clarke Weigle!
      In response to the publisher's question as to which key should be on the title, Mahler replied: "According to the disposition of the movements (of which the usual I. comes only in 2nd place), it is difficult to speak of a key of the 'entire symphony', and, in order to avoid misunderstandings, it is preferable to leave such a key unmarked."
      So his indication was quite clear, but not completely restrictive: he did not downright forbid the indication of a key. Therefore there seems to be a certain leeway to decide to do it for good reasons and to justify it. For example, because of the convention of designating a symphony by number and key, it has become established that the C sharp minor is called with the fifth. This is due to the fact that the key from which a symphony is developed is much more decisive than the number. Mahler's symphony is developed from C sharp minor, even if it ends up in D major. The symphony begins in C sharp minor, but does not end in C sharp minor. There are other works where it is also the case that they are marked with the initial key, even if they end in a different key.
      Of course, it does not necessarily follow from these considerations, among others, that one should ignore Mahler's intention. But he did not express himself in a completely restrictive manner.
      Greetings from the WDR Sinfonieorchester!

      It's listed as c sharp minor. Where do you see Cb minor? Maybe it's because of the translation?

    Tolle Aufführung! Aber wie man die Dynamik eines solchen Orchesters auf technischer Seite so dermaßen kaputt-komprimieren kann, ist mir ein Rätsel. Alle halbwegs lauten Stellen werden hörbar begrenzt, von gutem Klang bleibt nicht mehr viel übrig. Schade!
