Mahler’s third symphony is one of the greatest symphonies of all time. I very much enjoyed this remarkable performance by one of the world’s best orchestras under the baton of a young and truly talented conductor. Despite his young age Klaus Makela has already achieved a lot, become a much sought after young maestro and is hopefully on a secure path to become one of the great conductors of the twentyfirst century. I am not at all surprised that the Concertgebauw has chosen him as its chief conductor. Well done Klaus.
This is a wonderful play of the 3rd Mahler Symphony. Mäkelä is extraodinario ! I love that conductor !

An interesting mix for this recording from the engineer at the mixing soundboard; the stage mics are almost all of the feed. There is very little ambient mix if any from the hall. The tell to this is how clearly the solo instruments are heard.
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is the best there is on the planet at this time. Amazing too in view of how many of the musicians are younger adults.
This is a great study of Dolby Atmos mixing; everyone fake that makes a good and stoniting job, but no one made nothing has to be do be done.😢

PS: Now after seeing the performance this video feels like a dress rehearsal - it was wonderful!!! I suggest doubters to attend a live performance before making judgements. KM was at one with the orchestra, the sound was incredible (this has something to do with the concert hall too). Marvellous!
I also watched them live in Vienna. At the Musikverein on 9th May 2024. I was blown away and it was certainly the best Mahler 3rd that I have heard live (much better than London Symphony Orchestra who also played in May this year under MTT). Best Mahler that I have ever heard live was still Mahler 2nd at the Berliner Philharmonie in January 2015 under Simon Rattle.

Makela is another young loud and fast buck, like Levine and Tilson Thomas were in their baby boy twenties, who caused critics with wax in their ears to ooh and aah in their reviews. I own over 40 Mahler 3rds already and find every rendition of some interest.

I didn't feel bored at all. There were exquisite overlaps and reverberations in places, and phrases that would put a seasoned veteran to shame. And I felt that this playful sense of sound was the next generation of music.🍒🍒

I don’t have the BEST ear in the world (just relative pitch) but I can see where more seasoned listeners would think this is lackluster. But the guy is 25!!! Although I won’t be around when he’s 55 I bet there will be improvement in things such as nuance. As for the audio that not may not be the venue, but the miking. My favorite interpreter is a toss-up between Bernstein or Barenboim. But no one understood Mahler like Lenny.

The Third is my favorite Mahler Symphony, because due to its extension and characteristics it is unique as a musical composition.Its colossal first movement is like a common characteristic of the gender, however when it passes it opens and tranforms into a sonata that isn't a classical sonata either, which is my favorite form of composition.I'm a music lover with some instruction in singing, in such a way that my judgment like all judgment, is somewhat subjective, otherwise it is better known that in matters of taste...nothing has been written so far.
This symphony should be thought of as meanderings with Mahler.
What an absolutely beautiful performance! My only gripe is that the camera work and editing feels a tempo behind. Often too tight a frame, too close, and consistently late to the actual instruments playing the hero part.

A shame the timpani and percussion were almost inaudible sometimes. Some wonderful articulation and 'breaths' ir stops between phrases in the finale. Nice tremolo too!

Some of the comments here are really sour grapes. It is a pretty good performance. I don’t like the hall and the percussion could be a bit more present, but for the younger generation of young conductors, I feel he is very promising. The orch chose him so all the best of luck.
Sour grapes? There is nothing called younger generation of conductor. A chief conductor of such an orchestra should be a true master. You don’t give him time to grow up. He shall grow up with youth orchestra before even touching orchestra on that level. It is a mistake, but all concertgebouw musicians are responsible for what they have now, they chose him.
@@johnnysun6166 It is a Concertgebouw tradition to hire young conductors who have a lot of potential. Mengelberg, Haitink, Chailly: all relatively unknown and fresh when they started. Eduard van Beinum was bred for years as an assistant conductor by the orchestra itself, Willem Kes, their very first conductor was an an acclaimed maestro, but left after 7 years.
Mäkelä is not 'a mistake'. He is now 'artistic partner', growing into his role as chief conductor for the next years, being 100% at the helm in 2027. Don't worry. They'll be fine 😉
It isn't sour grapes to conclude that a once great orchestra hired an immature conductor whose hair and suit are far more impressive than his conducting. He had an opportunity to grow and mature with an excellent Oslo Philharmonic but opted to rush to the head of the class before he was ready. On this occasion all he was missing were the "smart" glasses he usually wears when trying to perform Mahler.

Palace Hall in Bucharest. The problem with the acoustics is very well known but sadly Bucharest has no other big concert hall better suited for an orchestra...
I have sung in the choir for this performance. All of us in the musical branch in Romania know of this great problem, but, unfortunately, there is no quick solution for it. The Palace Hall was built solely for speeches and events, not music of any kind. There is no hall bigger in Romania that can host an event of such demand. By far, acoustics wise, the Radio Hall is superior. An investment such as a new big concert hall would require attentive planning, as the regular public would probably not be interested in attending concerts. It would only fill up when the festival comes. The Palace Hall is not being used for season concerts, whereas the Radio Hall and the Atheneum are. The two have a similar capacity of 800-900 seats. The position is most important for these kinds of events. The Atheneum and the Palace Hall are located in the center of city, in a bright area with lots of businesses, hotels and restaurants. The architecture of the Atheneum also brings in people that enjoy both a beautiful concert hall and a nicely-sounding one. The Radio Hall, although it is only 1-2km away from the Atheneum is not situated in a very lively neighborhood. The Radio Hall is housed by the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation HQ, remotely placed on a residential street. People prefer the Atheneum because of the accessibility and the vibration of the surroundings over the Radio Hall, which is the best concert hall in Romania with marvelous live digital recording capabilities and has the biggest pipe organ in Eastern Europe. Imagine Romania were to build a massive concert hall. Nobody could get to it as it would be too far, having no place to build it in the city center. Personally, I believe the Palace Hall should be demolished and rebuilt from scratch. That would ensure a good concert hall in a nice area.
As I listen to this, at the opening, the horns seem restrained. They should be joyous and powerful. The cymbal should be exhaltant.
Simply incredible for his age and superbly impressive attention to some details, however, the feel is not there yet. Nothing personal, but one has to live a good chunk of life to really get Mahler.
That was a bit of a slog. Although honestly the sound engineer didn't improve things.
I’m aware that the end of the first phrase in the first movement has a dot at the end but why do orchestras insist on playing this like a burp A dot just means separation.
I know, I have never heard an orchestra play that note full length, yet.

Listen, guys. You have all settled for a boob. Look how wonderful I look conducting Mahler 3. Come on! And whoever has said this is boring, yes, spot-on! I mean, of course there is some talent with Klaus Makela or else he would not be where he is, but at the same time there is much better out there, less malleable for sure, to choose from than this. If all it takes is politics and kissing ass to get the Concertgebouw job, I guess this is then what we've got.
Interesting what you say, and honestly I recognize my own ideas in your opinion when I listen to this recording. However, in the week before this recording I heard the RCO with Mäkelä twice with Mahler 3 in the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam). It was a transcendental performance that sparked conversation for weeks afterward. His "intertial tempi" mentioned in another comment created tremendous tension in the audience and were very appropriate at the time. I would like to blame the recording quality and the acoustics of this concert hall because I do not recognize the RCO in their performance from the week before, although that may be too simplistic.
Mäkelä knows how to play with everyone's attention span in a way that only the best conductors can. That is an ingredient that I think can help him grow to great heights. There are many things to note and that only stimulates the debate, which I find very interesting, but I can only recommend experiencing him live once to experience how inspired the orchestra plays under his baton.
The audio is a big part of the problem with this performance. I also suspect the musicians aren’t very inspired performing in a hall with such problematic acoustics. 😎🎹

Lucky for Mr Makela, who manages to make the first movement boring with his inertial tempi that are more dirge than march, this orchestra knows this work under several conductors. The most interesting thing about this performance is the marked contrast between Mr Makela’s podium intensity and the absence of any intensity coming from this finest European orchestra. Mr van Rijen is always awesome.
Fully agree. The first movement is very affected and bizarre. Excessively long pauses all over the place. It seems like he's trying to be different just to be different, but I don't see any musical point to it. It completely saps any momentum and must drive the orchestra crazy. And the string tremolos are often too loud. And he seems to have an odd preference for portamentos, which sometimes I like but it seems like an affectation. I will give him credit for the last movement though. I thought that was quite lovely. I have a feeling he likes strings better than percussion:)

He's fine if you don't like to hear any percussion. Mahler 3 has elaborate percussion parts - especially in the first movement - and Makela seems to dampen them more than just a bit. The percussion are almost non-existent in the "southern storm" climactic passage of the first movement's development section. What gives?!? That never happened under Haitink or Chailly.
The sound here isn't that great--it's dynamically compressed. And who knows how much the microphone placement affects the orchestral balances, including the percussion?
Maybe, but you can see in the 5th movement how lightly the tuned bells and glockenspiels are being played. So that's clearly deliberate. Also, all the timpani rolls in the finale seem really to be cut short and underplayed. I just don't think Makela really wants to hear the percussion. @@poturbg8698
I think it's rather due to the acustics of the concert hall and the recording. In other performances here on youtube, Mäkeläs interpretations are well balanced including more percussion, harps etc :)

Let’s not exaggerate. Yes, this Mahler is a bit mechanical, I don’t really « hear » the composer’s view of the world, and the acoustics is not the best, but that’s not the worst 3 I have heard.
