After reclaiming the boxing championship title, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) plans to retire and live with his wife, Adrian (Talia Shire). However, during an exhibition match, Rocky's friend Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is mercilessly beaten to death by hulking Russian newcomer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). Rocky vows payback against Drago and flies to Russia to train for a Christmas Day fight. Despite their different training methods, Rocky and Drago both wage a long and intense match.

Dolph Lundgren is actually like an engineer or something. Seems like a good dude in real life.

I don't know about plastic surgery after Rocky III but I do know that during filming of this one he spent 4 days in the hospital, because he told Dolf Lundgren to hit him and Dolf burst Stalones pericardium ( the sack around the heart)

Yes Sly had facial surgery (not sure when) when Sly was. On in Hells Kitchen NY the doctor injured him w/Forceps. He cut a nerve on the left side of Sly’s face that paralyzed his face and tongue. That’s why his face droops and why he speaks the way he does. He got surgery once because he lost a lot of weight for 1 movie that it made it look worse so he had a doctor lift his left side to make it look more even

Drago is my favorite rocky villain. Hes such a contrast to the other showboats like clubber.
He look so different between 2 and 3 is because for Rocky 3 & 4 and Rambo 2 he train like he never train before with insane diet that why he is so fit for Rocky 3 and is traning was even more insane for Rocky 4 !!!
Rocky could pass off as former Mr. Olympia three time champion Frank Zane's brother when he trained for Rocky 4.
I always thought the rambo 2 / 3 physique was rediculous. I understand why he did it, it was the age of musclebound action heros after all. But in first blood he went for a realistic approach, eating a few hundred calories per day and dropping to 159lb for the film. And for that particular character, I felt the lean, mean, former POW look fitted better
Dolph was a two-time European kickboxing champion before he was offered to act in movies.
@20:01 Retire with the title. This means that the next champion will be selected by the appropriate committee (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO), and it doesn't necessarily mean that the champ is the same person. And it is also where the term "paper champion" comes from, as it means they never beat the ex-champ.
I sometimes wonder if Apollo knew that his side-girlfriend was pregnant with Adonis, and rather than face the scandal that would ensue when everyone discovered he'd been cheating on his wife, he was *wanting* to go out with a suicidal bang in a way that might redeem him in the eyes of the public. Apollo was always an impulsive dude, that's for sure.
@24:39 Important to know when watching the training scenes Rocky is simply doing the low-tech versions of Drago's hi-tech one.
Secondly, if the only thing my opponent thinks about me is to kill me I know he cannot fight. As I don't fear 1-dimensional thinking.

If the Champion retires, the boxing commission appoints a new champion usually whomever was rated as the number 1 contender.
Normally they'll have the top 2 contenders fight or have a tournament.
Absolutely wrong. You don’t just get crowned champion that’s a load of bullshit. The belt is classified as vacant and the top two contenders in that particular sanctioning body will fight for the belt. Stop jus running your mouth if you don’t know what you’re talking about spreading misinformation
the title is vacant, the boxing commission will appoint 2 new fighters to fight, it should be the nuber 1 and number contenders, but the money in boxing, who knows
I ended up loving the character of Apollo Creed. Carl Weathers was born to play that character. May he rest in peace and Burt Young (Pauly) as well.

I recently found out that Ivan Drago has battled cancer. For now Ivan has emerged triumphant from what I read.
Usually, I think they take the best number one contenders at the time of your retirement and put them against each other and whoever wins is the new heavyweight champion

Thing is, Drago should've been disqualified and charged with murder. There are *rules* in the ring, and the referee is there to enforce them. When Drago pushed the ref away, when he was trying to break them up, and then continued to wail on Apollo, he deliberately broke those rules, and was no longer subject to the lawful protections and legal defense of mutual combat within the ring.
Drago *IS* a murderer.

Sylvester Stallone said many times that Apollo's death should not have happened. Problem was he realized it too late when the movie was already made and ready for release.
In a way I agree, but at the same time it has a greater impact on the rest of the movie/movies when such a sad thing happened to one of the main characters of the Rocky series.
Anyways RIP Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed) who just very recenty passed away.

If you retire as heavyweight champion, it would go in the records that you retired as champ -- but your belt would be given back to the comission for more competition. That's for just being a belt holder though -- if you mean the "Lineal" championship (Lineal meaning the person who beat the person who beat the person...) it gets confusing if you retire. You could always claim that you were the dude, but then again -- a 20 year old kid who just became champion who has the belt you used to own could claim likewise, and since you're probably older at that point, are you really going to go back and question the younger champ? Or gatekeep them? Better to have grace and relinquish the title.
In actual Heavyweight boxing, the lineal championship goes back to John L. Sullivan in the late 1800's from the UK. The current undisputed (boxing has 4 different comissions that give belts) and lineal champion is Oleksandyr Usyk from Ukraine. He unified the belts recently against Tyson Fury.

Im glad u kept the scene were duke gave rocky the inspirational talk at the cottage, one of the best scenes in the movie. Alot of people cut that scene out when editing. P.S they definitely was injecting drago with steroids
Damn Rocky for not throwing in the towel. I know Apollo didn't want him to but in those last few seconds he should have, could have at least saved his life if not his career.
Apollo would have been as good as dead if Rocky did it, he never would have recovered mentally. Plus Drago wouldnt have stopped anyways, evidenced by pushing the ref away in the first round.
It would have been a tko in the first round. Apollo wasn't defending himself anymore. Also Drago pr been disqualified after continuing to hit after the bell

You CAN NOT survive more than a few hits to the head before you start taking damage .
I know how hard i can kick has hurt many as i got hit.
I have never felt a lunch even close to what a kick can feel like
I am always willing to show anyone just how bad a kick to the head.
Check out the Director’s Cut if you haven’t yet. Much better depth and drama with that cut
dont get down, after you see rocky 5, i have only watched it once never again, but once you get passed that to rocky balboa, and then hope you continue with creed 1 and 2, amazing, thats all i will say without spoiler

I dont get the "Her doesnt look like Rocky" comments. He has aged3 more years from Rocky III. I think the beard looked good. Also, this was USA vs USSR and meant a lot to us who grew up in the cold war era. I feel you are concentrating on frivolous things rather than what is at stake.

this movie all be it made in 1985 or so, but this was at the height of the cold war, with the west and russian, tensions were hi, it was the soviet unuion back then not really called russia, the soviet union encompassed many nations, thats why his end speach was, about the 20 million, there was always a threat of world war 3, with nuclear weapons. happily the cold war ended in the 90's, and places became rebulic, that were under the flag of the soviet unuion, Now russia is flexing its might, to try and gain back what was lost, crimea they took, and now trying to take ukraine, russian has no where to go after that, as the rest are part of europe and nato, which was created after world war 2, with the US, the UK and France, now there are 31 nato countries, you stepp foot on a nato country, the other 30 countries, will retaliate with force, sadly ukraine where close to joining nato, but russia knew this invaded before the had a chance,

This is the most unbelievable Rocky movie and jumped the shark. Nothing but propaganda and the most ridiculous ending ever. Sorry, I will not revisit this fairytale of a film.
