  • ROCKY BALBOA (2006) | FIRST TIME WATCHING | MOVIE REACTION
Now long-retired, Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) runs a Philadelphia eatery and mourns the loss of his beloved wife, Adrian. Yearning to recapture a bit of his glory days, he plans to re-enter the ring for a few low-profile, local matches. All that changes when Rocky accepts a challenge to fight the world's reigning heavyweight champion, Mason "the Line" Dixon (Antonio Tarver).
Enjoy my reaction as I watch "ROCKY BALBOA (2006)" for the first time!

Talia Shire (Adrian) was originally supposed to be in the film but her & Sylvester Stallone decided that the story needed Rocky to experience a “loss” in order for the script to work. So they decided that Adrian’s death would be the source of the loss.

This movie has three great monologues: Rocky in the courtroom when he argues his position for getting medically cleared for his boxing license, Little Marie when she tells Rocky that "fighters fight" in the van, and - of course - the best one - Rocky's speech to Robert. Notice too at the end Rocky does not offer his son an embrace. He says what he has to say and even sort of bumps into Robert on his way past him. "Don't forget to visit your mother." It's the only time in the movie where Rocky doesn't smile at Robert or move to hug or try to embrace him. Stallone NAILS the emotion in that scene in so many ways - both with his words and his body language.

Though sixteen years had passed since Rocky V, Sylvester Stallone shared that he still felt haunted by how it ended. This motivated him to write and direct 2006's Rocky Balboa.

Love this one! Little Marie was just little Marie. Rocky was always so kind to everyone! A good hearted man of the people. He went out the way he wanted and he missed his Adrian. You will love the first 2 CREED movies though.
Fun fact...Today, June 28th is Rocky movie night at the steps of the art museum.

10:50 - No, it's not the same actress. Jodi Letizia played Marie in the first film. She actually appeared in a cut scene in Rocky V, where it's revealed that Rocky was right about the future that awaited her for continuing to act the way she was warned about. You can still catch a couple glimpses of her during the street fight at the end.

Rocky was a point where he was losing everything and everyone around him. Mick, adrian, apollo. Rocky jr was being distant. Micks gym was crumbling, the pet shop he met adrian at and the place he took her on her first date were gone. Him being nice to little marie was just him trying to hold on to or save/protect what little he had left of his past.

  • @commsense1979

Also I think Little Marie kissed Rocky on the cheek outside of his hotel room. It wasn't romantic. As he told her, Adrian still had his heart, and she understood that. But Little Marie and Steps filled a void for Rocky, especially when Robert kept pulling away from him earlier in the film.

For me it was fascinating to see Rocky evolve as a character and to see how he handled the hard knocks that we all have to deal with in life. Also I loved the speeches that he gave in this last movie. And I 100 percent agree that you have to be able to take the hard hits and keep moving forward because we are all going to get hit by life. Rocky and Sylvester Stallone are very inspirational and positive influences.

    Talia Shire is still alive
She was originally going to be in the movie but she and Stallone felt Rocky needed a great loss for the script to work and agreed that Adrian would die. They had her die off screen because they didnt think the audience could recover from seeing that.
She had already cleared her schedule to do the movie when they made that decision and Stallone made sure that she got her full pay for the archive footage.
Talia did press for the movie and made it clear that she was supportive

In each Rocky movie, Rocky has to overcome something. Inspirational stories. This story was about dealing with grief.
Sly didn't like Rocky 5. This is the movie that he really wanted to make as his last Rocky movie.
Creed 1 is just as inspiring and some of Sylvester Stallones' best acting.

Adrian's death was necessary b/c without it you wouldn't need a Rocky 6 and certainly Rocky would have had no reason to fight again. He was dealing with grief, and he need to replace "old pain with new pain" as Rocky stated in the film.

Thank you for your direct honest opinions on this one. And the franchise. I’m one of those fans that personally believe 1-4 were peak movies. The reason Rocky Balboa is considered among the best is because it was coming off Rocky 5, and the hype of Rocky returning after many years. It was very reminiscent of the first film. And everyone go gah gah over Stallone’s writing performance. Which is great and everything don’t get me wrong. People will tell you the famous explanation debate why Adrian wasn’t in the film. Even if it’s fair, it doesn’t mean it’s all perfect, couldn’t be done better. It’s a creative move that win some people over. I still would have liked to see her in the movie at least. The only reason I gave it a pass is because it spared us from seeing such a character die. But that isn’t to say not happening wouldn’t fit the tone they went anyways. I very much liked the movie, and it’s an even better closer than 5. But I be lying if I said I loved it. There’s also the Creed movies which are the next generation successors that we can all recommend you watching.
